The federal new Democrats have chosen filmmaker and activist Avi Lewis as their new leader.
He won with 56% of the vote on the first ballot, a decisive victory.
As Marina Von Stackelberg tells us, Lewis's win signals a shift to the left for the party.
Please welcome the new leader of Canada's NDP, the new vote shifts to NPD, Avi Lewis.
The NDP's new leader, Avi Lewis, takes the stage after a decisive win.
He accumulated almost 40,000 votes, nearly double that of his runner-up, Edmonton MP Heather
McPherson.
Lewis called her and the other candidates plus the small number of MPs up on stage for
his victory speech.
After seven months of campaigning across this country, the NDP comeback starts now.
Lewis's victory signals a shift to the left.
That includes more aggressive climate policy, like the end of fossil fuel expansion.
Provincial NDP leaders in Alberta and Saskatchewan are already pushing back on that.

The UK is calling the practice of boiling lobster alive, cruel, aiming to ban it by 2030.
That's left the lobster industry in Canada, hoping there won't be a big impact on sales
to one of Canada's strongest European markets.
The lobster council of Canada recently let it trade mission to the UK.
Jeff Irvin is the council's executive director.
I think we all agree that it's unlikely it's going to change the volume that's imported.
It'll just change how different ways that people will deal with the lobster when they buy it.
Irvin says the Shellfish Association of Great Britain has yet to clarify what the new rules
will be.
The Canadian industry hopes more prepared lobster products will still be allowed.
More of America's military might has arrived in the Middle East, including fighter jets,
helicopters, and about 3,500 Marines and sailors.
Which begs the question, is the Trump administration about to launch a ground offensive in Iran?
Sasha Petrovsik has more on this.
So far, this war has been fought mostly from the air and the sea, but with 3,500 U.S.
Marines arriving and more troops on the way, U.S. President Donald Trump will soon have
to decide if a ground offensive comes next.
The Washington Post reports that plans have been drafted for thousands of troops to make
amphibious landings.
The Iranian military warns U.S. forces will face resistance from a million of its soldiers
and end up stuck in a swamp of death.
President J.D. Vance has been trying to reassure Americans that the impact of war, including
rising gas prices, is temporary.
I'm not interested in being in Iran a year down the road, two years down the road.
We're going to be out of there soon.
How soon is still an unanswered question?

A gravel road shared by the U.S. and Canada for decades is about to be closed to Canadians.
The border road is a 14-kilometer stretch between Alberta and Montana.
It's physically on the U.S. side, but is maintained by the Prairie Province.
The U.S. government says it will be closed to Canadian traffic starting in July, as part
of Washington's effort to strengthen security on its borders.
Some B.C. tourism operators say sales are slower than expected, ahead of this summer's
FIFA World Cup.
Maria Wihaq is with West Trek tours.
She says they've pre-booked some university dorm rooms as part of their World Cup package,
but so far, they've only sold 20% of the rooms.
It is very nerve-wracking, and I will say that this summer, we know that a lot of our regular
travelers aren't coming to Vancouver during that period.
Airbnb data shows guests from Canada, the United States, and the UK are driving the most
searches for stays around match dates.
And that is the World of Sour.
