America leads the world in medicine development. It matters. We get new medicines first, nearly
three years faster. Five million Americans go to work because we make medicines here at home,
and not relying on other countries keeps us safe. But China is racing to overtake us.
Will we let them? Or will we choose to stay ahead? When America leads, America cures.
Let's tell Washington to keep us in the lead.

In a surprise to no one, the $2 million contract has strings attached.
Heightened on field attention when you're the lone threat and the off field critique is particularly
and justifiably sharp. When you take the max contract and $2 million is beyond the max,
you'd best be prepared for all the ramifications. It's what player managers miss when they demand
top dollar ahead of time. This is Nassai Wanganine Miller's new reality and it's a big reality
as evidenced by the first two games and it's Tom DeCone's reality for that matter as well.
What we've seen in 14 games is the best players in the competition planting their flags with
commanding performances. Marcus Pontelli, Christian Petraca, Nick DeCos, Max Gorn, signature
performances from the modern day greats. So the best paid players would want to get moving as
well and earn the dollars that they've demanded and accepted. Max money comes with max responsibility
and you'd best be aware on the way in. The Hyundai Openline is 13736736. Get a

portfolio, four-time premiership player, three-time premiership captain, two-time normsmith
medalist in Australian football hall of famer Luke Hodg. Shallow to your Hodgie. Morning, Jared.
How good Tuesday mornings the leadership prevail again that we've done for the last few years and
I'll tell you what, there's quite a few leadership topics that we've got to go through. Hopefully
we've got enough time but you're right. The first one that we've you've mentioned already is
the Bontan the likes and these guys standing up I saw Petraca first hand in round one but then
you've got the next phase of leadership and it's how to handle a 23-year-old kid who's played 88
games with all this pressure because of a contract and I think that's where you look at St. Kilda.
There's a lot of pressure on Roshi and the coaches to make sure that even though he's got this
big contract and everyone's talking about him and the football that he played last year
was deserving of that contract because St. Kilda needed to sign him. They had the money in the
salary cap that they had to spend on someone so they're most will give it to someone who was
knocking down the door and playing the best football in the competition. All the most exciting
football anyway. So this is a big part for the St. Kilda leaders to really focus in that he's
still a 23-year-old kid not a bloke who's on $2 million. So what did you see when you were watching
on Sunday? If he was 27-28 and he had the flexibility to run around and look if he wants to start
forward and start back or wants to go through the midfield and do it at will whenever you would like
I'm okay with that but at 23 you've still got so much learning that you've got to do and
and although there was highlighted so much on the on the shows last night where he would start
forward and then he'd push down back or they were St. Kilda had limited numbers in the midfield
because he wasn't at a stoppage. Flexibility is great when you get entagged but it can't come
before the team the team structures because so many blokes are looking left to right to make sure
that your team mates are in the right position so you've got full clarity on your role. If you're
looking to your right and a player's not there because he wants to try and take someone forward or
back just to try and get a bit of space that's where your teammates do start to dirty up on your
and I know speaking from experience when we played we had a lot of blokes in our side that had
a little bit of flexibility but it was at the right time if they 90% of time wanted to do their own
thing then tell you what they'll be getting pulled into line straight away and unfortunately with
the price tag players will look at that and go hey and I'm on half what he's on I'm on a quarter
at he's doing but I'm still doing my role on play my role for the team I don't have flexibility to
go and play wherever I want so this is the big thing for St. Kilden it's only early but
when you're 23 you need to understand how to break a tag from half back. Halfback is the hardest
position to break a tag because all the forward has to do is limit your rebound efficiency and then
try and snag a goal yourself if they can keep nice to 15 and the small forward can have six touches
and kick one or two goals guess what that is a win so you've got to learn to break a tag from half
back and then you can move to other spots on the ground and if you're getting there done
and I remember Clarke used to sit across half back and he would come in and be like okay what if
you learn when you've got to stand in a certain position but then they'll go and have their
finger in the back okay against some blocks that won't work so you have to roll around and just
try and stand in front of a key forward to try and limit their impact and make the tag and make
a decision but Clarke I would always make sure that you were trying to come up with situations to
resolve that by yourself before he'd say okay then why don't you go for a run in the midfield
and the third quarter just to try and break the shackles then you don't do it early on and you
don't give it to a young kid because they'll just they'll just want to get the hands on the ball
before the benefit of the team so there's a lot of learning he's still educating himself but
more importantly St. Kielder coaches have to educate him to how to stick with the position and
try and get benefit out of it and then after a while if it's not working then you throw that
flexibility to maybe start half forward and run onto the ball when you see fit but it's going to
be a couple of years of tough times for Nas with all this pressure on him but the most important
thing for him is you've still got to develop him like he's a 23 year old kid who hasn't played
100 games yet not a not a person who's the highest paid player on the AFL because that's brings
enough pressure to the young kid just by that tag and when the games on the line and he's on the
bench what are you thinking watching yeah well there's this is the the flexibility is there's 12
minutes to go you kick a goal if you start to run off this is where people on the bench are saying
unless you're absolutely gassed and you need to come off for a two minute burst you're keeping
him out there if that means you got to sit at full forward and have two minutes by yourself don't
squeeze up the ground just stay in the goal square for two minutes to get the same I guess save the
energy as you would on the bench do that and then you've got 10 minutes to go and show what you're
what your worth is and show what you can do to change your game just like we saw last year
when they played Melbourne when he he took clearance as he pushed forward he took hangers he
kicked goals he turned the game from him won the game that's where he'll understand as he gets older
that you stay on the ground that the the people who can win the game we will stay on the ground you
could imagine if Nick Daicos was running off in the games in the balance guess what the
spells on the bench are saying hey no no Nick you just go and go pluck yourself forward for
a couple minutes and then you go on ball and you change that game for us so it's it's different
doing it for three and a half quarters and having your and making your own calls compared to late
in the game when St Kielder supporters St Kielder coaches and the players needed him on that ground
on the ground on the ground to make sure that he had an impact as we've seen him do a few times
last year for as long as we've run the leadership portfolio Max Gorn has been one of the centerpieces
of it and he was the centerpiece again on Sunday at 34 years of age he looked like he'd lost
nothing yeah you keep looking at Max Gorn well you look at Ruckman over the years that they
shoulder the workload for for a long period of time and all of a sudden you're creeping to your
30s and that body contact that crashing and bashing the jumping into the to the other Ruckman
job obviously they've now changed the rules back to do that but it's a heavy workload especially
he showed her most of this for for 80% of of games he obviously had the year where Grundy came in
and they tried to throw him forward a little bit but he's a person who loves that ownership
and then when push comes to shove he didn't pack down again you look at his last quarter area
10 touches five contested possessions kick the goal three inside four to 50s and you sit back and
go he might be the old dog in the team or on the field but when push comes to shove that's the
blocks that you want because he can will himself to that extra contest he needs he knows that
I need to make a stand here I need to have an impact and he's done it Tom and Tom again so we
should never doubt him but you look at Tom I thought Tom was serviced all against him he had a
red dot crack he used his athleticism at at times and was able to move around the ground
but when when the game's on the line you're always lean towards those experienced guys because
they just know when to step up and and Max he's has done it again the other leader that we've never
doubted is Marcus Bontan-Pelley so he's entering a season for the first time as a 30-year-olds
he's got a lot going on in his life away from 40 we spoke to him a couple of weeks ago at length
about this and he was just so complete in what he did in his second game of the season not just the
trademark stuff but the tackling and the smothering the moment where he ran down the ground and he out
ran Callahan to be able to take that mark in the goal square there's just there's there's always
been something about the bonnets why he is the best player in the competition and I'm absolutely
resolute about that there might be even more about him now well the fact that he's he pushes forward
like obviously when he had that injury last year he came back in he we saw him trying to push forward
and kick more goals it was it was a stage where if the ball's in a 50-50 he realized he's mismatched
on on other midfielder so he would try and take him forward get him mismatched and have a shot on
goal but what teams have to do it it's almost like the the daikos cause don't get beaten by what you
know like if you're gonna let Marcus Bontan-Pelley run around and do whatever he wants whether he wants
to start in the midfield and then get a clearance like there was one of his goals Toby Green started
on him at the back of the stoppage inside forward 50 and he's two meters like the starting point
was really good but as soon as that ball goes up Toby's mindset was I'm going to look at the ball
and try and get this impact not Toby you don't do that in a defensive 50 stoppage against Marcus
Bontan-Pelley who we're all sitting here going how has he won a brown low yet he knows he knows
positions to get to they know where he's standing he's always going to be in the right spot
but that I think that's what the signs of such a good player for such a long period of time we know
what they can do with the ability but they're so reliable to their teammates as well they're always
going to set up right and they know that if they're in trouble they got Bont behind him ready to
feed back and and if you give him Tom and space inside forward 50 he's going to go and kick his
goals once you've got six so far for the year three note three in both games so yeah any teams
that coming up against the dogs if you're going to let Bont run around and do what he wants
unfortunately you're going to see another 30 and three are you giving Scott Pendlebury the
distinguished service award tonight and lifting the suspension or replacing it with a fine when
this happened for Gary Abel it took the tribunal three minutes three minutes to go no no we're
not spending gas yeah after 328 he's at 427 yeah it's accurate right well you look at it and go
did they have to send it to the tribunal I'm like yes 100% they had to send it to the tribunal and
you look back and go Pelley well why he didn't mean to run through it look at his personality
he's played that many games and not being suspended but you got to look at it for the look of the
game there was a contest one person brace the other person didn't he showed a hit his head and then
you look at and go well in the past that has been sent to the tribunal people who've got weeks as we
have on this occasion on this occasion and then the other reason they had to send it is for future
incidents if we've got the same thing happening around 15 and we say it's Scott Pendlebury in
around one so we'll let it go they've got to do the same thing back around 15 so they had to send
it to the tribunal for those two reasons but I reckon they're going to walk in and it'll probably
quicker than the Gary ablet three minute one or they're going to walk in and go even he said the
right things post game as well I was the hit too so my focus on the ball well tick tick well don't
if your focus on the ball then they're taken away that it wasn't deliberate intentional and then
as you can see he I heard him say if he bumps it's a week if he braces it's it's off and he said
well I brace then and we're all going to sit back and go if you've played this many this many
seasons this many games we're getting suspended and been a clean streak they're going to walk
in and go benefit the dad who's going for the ball he was a hit too he braced he didn't bump
accidental collision and that's going to go in his favor so 100% they've got to send it to the
tribunal for future cases like this but walking don't even do your tie up take it off and then off
you go Luke Hodge runs our leadership portfolio we're back in business on a Tuesday with Hodgy
we're talking about the swans without Errol Gordon Damien Hardwick bringing the young
folks in the line and maybe a little bit of Clarko as well it's Sydney Swans membership day
celebrate your South Melbourne heritage save $100 on Sydney Swans Vic Ultimate Memberships today only
waitly on SCN obviously never starting from from Saturday night and the shoulder injury that
he's sustained and he'll leave with a surgeon today and have surgery tomorrow so yeah it's a
lengthy time line as well unfortunately so we'll do everything we can to support him and and
getting back as good as you possibly can towards the back end of the year Dean Cox on the absence
of Errol Gordon for the next four months Errol's going to be with us on 360 tonight that was
Dean Cox with Gary and Tim this morning Hodgy how how big an absences Errol Gordon for the swans
well he was the spark in that third quarter against Carlton they couldn't get their hands on
the ball so they threw him down to take a kick in and next he links up three times gets a ball inside
Ford 50 he had seven touches in three bits of play and they all went inside they all went inside
Ford 50 to score he was one of the may I know there was a lot of injuries for the swans last year
with anyone over six foot three six foot four they were decimated with with injuries the big
blocks but he was the he was the linchpin the the run and creativity that he that he shown over
last few years that's an error they missed because of the injuries around him as well but I'm sort
of looking at Sydney and go well if there's a team that needs to fill a spot for a block like that
it's it's it's probably Sydney because you look at a Chad Warner who like they've played him more
as a half forward all of his touches on the weekend against against the Lions were pretty much
from the back of the center square forward so he'd been more of a forward roll this year
he went into 11 center bounces but five of them were in the last quarter when Gordon was injured
so they're sitting here going well yes we need Gordon back getting back round 14-15
give him a good run into the into the finals but they've got a bit a bit of luxury knowing that
Chad Warner who when he's up and about firing how exciting he is that they they can throw him in
in the middle as well and I guess the other one is the heany with the heany hamstring how bad is it
how long will that be but what what we did notice after talking to Dean Cox
pre-opening around was that there's as a workload over this offseason compared to the year before
they've done a amount of work a lot of their majority their main players the senior ones who we
all look out have done a big numbers in the in the preseason so this is just another chance for
these guys to step up and fill the void but for him it's heartbreaking you can see how how
shadow he was on the bench on on the weekend observations of a couple of coaches so Damien Hardwick
and so this is a totally different phase now for the Gold Coast Suns isn't there our
premiership favorites it's a it's a different world yeah well I think their sons and they're
looking at teams going well teams used to go to the suns and say oh we could we could beat them
and done matter how bad we bait I think the sun's in our rocking up the games going doesn't
matter how bad we can play we can beat certain teams and I think that's what dimmer saw on the
weekend you look at half time it's a 62 point lead to west coast and then a couple of these as
young teams do we did it at times at Hawthorne we got rained in I know Richmond and Jolong at times
that as well when they're at their top top of their their game a few things a little start to
sneak in a little bit of Larry football maybe a couple advantages from a free kick inside 4-50
there's some young guys thought they might snag one and get on the scoreboard dimmer's got a big
job and I think he may have spoken to a few of them quite forcefully as we know dimmer can post game
about respecting opposition not getting ahead of yourself because to lose to west coast we all
understand where west coast are at in in their development they're going to be bottomed by a long
way from what we've seen to lose the third quarter by 14 points was a disgrace for for sons
and I think dimmer really let the boys know that post game but I would I hate to see in the match
review with some of the Larry things that they did in that second half so dimmer's gone through
a different situation it's about pumping the boys up since he's been there given him confidence
given him courage to take the game on the next phase of dimmer is making sure that they don't get
ahead of himself because you can sort of see that you're anyone can get you if you're going with
an easy mindset and gold coach alone they didn't lose the game but they learned that in the third quarter
and the undisciplined acts of Mac Andrew who's bringing that into line I just think that's a part
of his development I'm sitting here going as a center half forward and a center half back I want a
physical person who's going to intimidate opposition but at the same time you can't do it the same
as the last one you can't do it before your team you can't give away silly free kicks easy goals
50 meter penalties just because you want to vent get your frustrations out so I love Mac and he's
and he's aggression but you got to control that and I guess that's another phase of his maturity but
also dimmer just sort of saying there's times to do it and there's times not to do it and when
your 50 meters out on the boundary line and then you go one undisciplined 50 meter penalty to give
them a goal yes it's against West Coast but that's about respecting all opponents as well would he
do the same against Brisbane or against Sydney and the like so that's just a next phase of Mac
he does so much right in his game maturity still would have come a little bit when it comes those
undisciplined free kicks all right you were there for that perplexing Carlton performance which
was a win and I know Jacob Weedering was was in your leadership portfolio here I just said about
Mac that I want a center half back or a center half forward who's going to be physical to intimidate
the opposition to least lead and I'm sitting back going look at Jacob Weedering I can see
patty crypts trying his backside or could seem against Sydney he was physical trying to turn the
game gave away few free kicks which is unpatty crypts like I want Jacob Weedering to be a person
down there as a leader if you look at a comparison of other center half backs and how they lead
look Harris Andrews who if they have three or four goals kicked against him he'll run up to
their midfield the Brisbane lines midfield and talk to him about what they need what the
mids are doing he's keeping a vision out from behind of the rights and wrongs of the defenders but
also the mids Jacob doesn't do that Jacob sits in his own little back line he might talk to
his mids there's no intimidation there's a few things there where young guys went and stuck up
for him when he was getting picked on against Sydney and he did absolutely nothing in return so
as a center half back as a vice captain as a leader I hope that he takes this week off the
sit back and go how can I change how can I add a bit more to this Carlton leadership group to
this Carlton side and hopefully we say move it on because we need a full back a center half back
who's intimidating who's leader who's a leader on the outside not just in closed doors and we
want him to to be communicated a little bit more with with the mids and letting them know what they're
doing right and what they're doing wrong just to help that defense all right Hojji we want to flag
there's a few of us who want to flag this with you right Hojji Luke Parker quarterback role I thought
his leadership down there was reminiscent of the great man could Hojji see a bit of himself in
Luke Parker patrolling half back with his leadership aggressive tackling high intercept marking
and ground ball gathers combined beautifully with Caleb Daniel keep an eye on Luke Parker and what
Alistair Clarkson is doing with him and then tell us next week whether that's exactly what he did
with you well but as long as he's got the the voice direction down there to help the young guys
around him and in front of him well that that's the start so what we'll do is we'll keep an eye on it
most weeks and then sort of see how that that part of his game has developed because he's never been
able to go and play that role he's always been mid forward but as a as a guy getting older sitting
across the half-back line showing your leadership definitely helps human also the team all right we'll
see on Thursday night of the G for the swans in the Hawks thanks to good on you Luke Hodge running
