1:00No, I'm going to be in Calgary, editing the podcast inside the truck that we recorded yesterday with Jackie Redmond. So I will be plugging it out on the weekend. That'll be really good. I'm sure that's going to be a very interesting interview. She's a very fascinating personality. You have no idea how fascinating she was if they must listen. Well, I know that she takes a lot of crap from people online, and she gives it, like she doesn't give it back, but she puts people, she tells them what's going on, and I appreciate that about her, that she doesn't back down. She talks about that in the interview, that exact thing, yes. Well, I think she has courage, and I respect that. All right, so a few things to talk about, and let's start here with Elliott Friedman, not sign yet, and we're like, we're not far away. I mean, I know there's most of a month ago, but these things are usually nailed down far before now. Elliott Friedman, not sign, Kevin B. Exa, not sign, Ron McLean signed, and Kelly Rudy

2:03being told that he's not part of the future at the broadcast at SportsNet. From a PR point of view, it hasn't got embarrassing yet or has it? No, I don't, I mean, I don't think so. Honestly, they could sign them the day before, and they'd be ready to go for the season opener. So I think it's just a public perception thing for the network. They really don't care. They'll just take as long as they need, and it's just a public perception that would be the problem, and I don't even think that's an issue. And when would they consider it like, or do they have a backup plan? That's a loaded question. I know. I'm going to say, yeah, I'm going to say they haven't had a backup plan since they got the first contract 12 years ago.

3:07I don't think they would have a solid backup plan. I think the high forehead would have sat around in a room and said, you know, and it depends how far apart they are in negotiations, or whether they do want to replace Ellie or not, or whether they're just trying to play hard ball, or there's a million things that you couldn't know unless you were in the room, because even if Ellie told you, he might not be privy to everything that's going on behind the scenes. But I think you would have a loose backup plan at this point, unless you knew for sure that neither one of them was coming back, and you thought there's no way we're going to reach an agreement, in which case you are scrambling to come up with a backup plan. Would there be a little bit of panic in that they've already secured McLean with the idea of the other two are coming back? And if they don't come back, they may have wanted to go in a different direction. Absolutely not. McLean is the linchpin. I think I put this on X a little while ago. You and I also may have talked about it.

4:07We're at the point now where Ron McLean produces that studio show. He produces it from the chair. I guarantee you they walk in and he tells them what he thinks should be in that show. So really he's the pivot point for them. Anybody sitting around him, Ron will have said, I can work with anybody. Not a problem. You can work with anybody. You can never shut up. So that'll be easy. It doesn't really. Honest to God, the other three could be cardboard seat fillers. And Ron would think he's done a great job with that studio show. So it's all hinged on him at this point. That's why you got time for it. You do need to bring in fresh blood though. Tony Braher, leaving the Emton Oilers organization, a very fine broadcaster. And I don't know where he's going. I don't think it's been made publicly available. But my first thought was put them on television, you know, on a network, like sports net because

5:08he's exceptional. He's very well spoken. Looks good. Has a brain in his head. He can do a lot of things. You, no matter who you hire, if you hire the same guys you had 12 years ago, you still have to have new players coming along and build them up and make them famous, right? Do you though? Do you? Like you and I might, but I don't, I don't see it. I've got to be honest with you. Like I was thinking about this before we came on. It's spectacular how many meetings I've sat in and the short-sightedness and lack of creativity, literally almost scared me to the point where I passed out. It's scary. How much forethought is not played and how much creativity doesn't exist. And it's frustrating to sit in those meetings because these people would tell you they have

6:09lots of foresight and they're creative and they are not. And so you'd think there'd be a bunch of new people in place. You'd think this, you'd think that. And if I dropped you in the room, you'd look at me after about 45 seconds and go, what the hell is this? I am not. I wish I was kidding, but I am not. I, some, I remember when the sports net won the contract and they spent a lot of money on it and they spent a lot of money on it because they wanted to beat out TSN and the people who committed to it and spent a lot of money on it were soon in Europe. They were gone very shortly after because the realization came that recovering the money was going to be like almost impossible. And so the original sets that involved, you know, the, you know, the gold tender's net and various other props and, you know, mega things that were, were looked real, I thought really good at the time. They sort of went away and we've had what I would consider to be more of a skeleton group

7:11except for the number of personalities that are on the, the desk between periods on, on hockey night. So how much of this, this is the network in the States being interested in all of it. And how much of this is that sports nets on a strict budget and they may not be able to go much farther than they already are. You know what? I think you hit the nail on the head. It could be a bit of both. Again, I'm not in the negotiations, but it could very well be Elliott saying, look, I can get, you could see what have tons of contact. You know, it's it. I can get X Y Z from here, here and here. I need you to match this and sports and it might be saying, well, we obviously can't match that. Now, what Elliott want to move? We want to fly somewhere once a week. Like how would that all play out? I don't know, but it could be a bit of both of that because, you know, there's just no way to know unless you're on the inside. And if I had to bet right now, my guess is they're both back and they announce it with like a week before the season.

9:15The other network is a Wednesday broadcast, right? Did they not do both like the Saturday is Elliott in Canada and the Wednesday is Elliott in the States? Yeah, absolutely. Jen Botterall has done that. As a casting Campbell has done it too. Yes, absolutely. It's not conducive to a marriage or to a family or to any sort of life on the outside. But a lot of those guys have resigned themselves to the fact that from September 10th until June 15th, nothing exists but a puck and a stick and skates and a bunch of arenas and some studios. And some people can do that. I was not great at it. I did it before I was married, which really helped. But when you're married, I mean, that's tough. Like my podcast partner Paul Heming just spent two years in Utah doing mammoth games. And he's now doing Carolina Hurricanes games where he's going to sleep at home 62 nights of the year. And he said to me the other day, he said, dude, you have no idea.

10:18I said, well, I have some idea. I have a lot of idea. And his daughter is at the age where he wants to be home. And you know, it's a big deal, especially when you reach a certain point in your life and your career. Steve, I'm a trusting person. I'm not at all cynical and I don't believe that anybody would do something for publicity. That sounds about right. But this has been good publicity for Elliott Friedman. And really if he goes back to sports net, for sports net, is there any part of you that thinks maybe they, you know, fell ass over T-cattle into something that is good for them because there's a buzz going on. And maybe they are continuing it beyond what is a normal parameter. Or am I just making stuff up now? No, you're not making stuff up. I would say in this current scenario, I would say for them to have even had an inkling of doing that would be spectacular because I don't see that with this group.

11:20It is a thing. There's no doubt it's a thing. Just do something crazy. Let's get in the media. Let I get it. And it works for many, many people. I don't think they would have done that because I got to be honest with you. It's like going into a kindergarten classroom and asking them to do astrophysics. I just don't think it's possible for this group. Oh, Lensky, you're a laugh ride on a Friday. You just are. All right. Let's change the subject. How excited are you about the Toronto Blue Jays? You know what? I'm not unexcited. I think it's so they win the season series against Cleveland. So if they're tied, it's them. They win the tie breaker. I'm excited. I mean, they're not going to get in with more than like, you know, 83 and 81 record. I guess that doesn't add up to 162. But they're not. If they reach the postseason, it's not going to be with a sparkling record. But it doesn't matter how is Dylan C. Spitching, you know, how is Soriano pitching?

12:23How are the, how are the key players playing going into the postseason? I'm pretty excited about it because I don't have it in front of me. 21 games left, 20 games left. Something like that. Yeah. Like, you can't really ask for much more than that. And quite frankly, it's more than, it's more exciting than if the team was, you know, 13 games out in front. And we're just playing out the string here waiting for the postseason. Somebody could get injured, you know, all those crazy things could happen. This is, this is fantastic to me. 83 and 79 as an ex-post fan. I knew all the numbers around 500 every year. 82 and 80. Thank you. I just, I'm not that quick. I could, I just couldn't do it that fast. I know it had to add up to 162. I knew that. Unless the back when I was a kid, the white socks in Milwaukee would always finish, you know, with 159 games because nobody was going to their games anyway and the commissioner would go, there's no, they're not in the pennant race. Why would they play each other? And they would just cancel three games. That happened. Or we wouldn't, we wouldn't make up rain outs either. Yeah. They're, they're out of it.

13:23Now they will for the money, right? Yes. Yeah, back in the day, yeah, look at the standings from like whatever. Yeah. 1972, not every team played out in 62 games. Yeah. No, because they didn't want to turn the lights on them. Anyway. I'm talking about the MLB owners. I'll be yelling at them all in 2027 all year. So there is that. So Labor Day, did you ever work a Labor Day game in the CFL? Absolutely. I, the two years I did CFL football. I worked the Labor Day, Labor Day game each year. And the thing about working a holiday on CBC at that time, I think you got double time in it. Nice. Nice. Yeah. It was ridiculous. I think people don't realize, you know, when I worked in Regina, I used to drive over to the CBC building, get clearance in a little pass. And I would walk down a hallway and I would read three, thirty second commercials and I would be paid over $400 for it. Like the CBC pays well.

14:24And so in the industry, I think that people don't understand why the CBC is loved so much. That's the thing I remember. You said to me, what was the like working on holidays? Well, we worked on Thanksgiving. We worked on Labor Day. We worked on Canada Day. I can't remember. There are always about four that you were always doing a CFL game on one of those dates. And it was not a bad thing. Sorry. You're like, okay, you know, hopefully it goes to overshoot. No, you just got, so like, yeah, like for the sake of argument, instead of getting $300 that day, you got like $2,250 like that's not too bad. That's the good living. So what are you up to? You got a long weekend. Are you heading anywhere? Are you just going to sit down and edit that puppy? I'm just going to edit this podcast. It was, I don't want to give anything away here. At points it got emotional. So when I edit, I want to make sure that breathes properly, that pollen, I said the right

15:26things. So it's actually going to take me a while. It's going to take some creativity to have a little, we be it up. It's going to take some creativity to make sure everybody sounds the way they're supposed to sound on this podcast because I want everybody to be happy, but I still want it to be entertaining and fun and revealing and all those other things. What I'm reading is from what you said is you want to take the dumb stuff you said out. Oh, this is such a hard thing to answer. I'll just go with yes. Yes, that's right. I want to take the dumb things or I said, I said, that's right. The other thing that could be possible is you said something that was quite poignant, but may not have gotten the answer you wanted. That's something else I would consider when you say you've got to edit and make sure it sounds right. I asked some very sensitive questions, but I need to make sure they have time to breathe and the answers have time to breathe because live, they sounded fine, but I can do a better

16:27job in editing. I can give you time to listen and go, wow. That's interesting. Did your guest who is an outstanding guest or your co-host at any time call you a jackass? Oh, that's a good question. I don't believe so, so that makes it two out of 59 podcasts where I have not been called a jackass, which is outstanding for me.
