In this episode, Phil and Janelle talk about The Time Trap, singing flowers, TV theme songs, Top 5, Steve Taylor, Veggie Tales, cruises, Fiction Books, Spring Break, Family Ties, Agatha Christie, and more!
Hello and welcome to episode 290 of the Mandarin Hornshow, Art Silvecchio.
And I'm Janelle Vecchio.
We're approaching our 300 episode, you know.
And spring break.
We have like a really good idea of what we were going to do for episode 300 and then
I totally forgot what it was.
Yeah.
You don't remember either?
I have no recollection.
Maybe the kids remember.
I feel like it was in a sleepy time.
Yeah.
I have a lot of good ideas.
You stay, like you dreamed it, woke me up, told me about it and then we were both too
sleepy to remember.
You know that or we talked about it on the show and maybe a listener can remind us what
we said.
Well.
I'm hoping for that because if it was sleepy state, there's no way we're giving that back.
Maybe the kids remember.
Hopefully you remember guys.
Well we'll do something awesome for 300.
I do think I had something in mind.
Was it a clip show?
I don't think so because a clip show says a lot of work.
That means me going through a lot of episodes and finding funny bits and clipping them out
and editing together and I'd like to celebrate by not giving myself too much work to do.
Or else it will never come out.
Yeah.
Well, we are excited for this episode though, episode 290 and we've got some fun stuff
to get to tonight and so let's jump right into the news.
Tell us some new stuff, you know.
We would like you to follow our Patreon at Mandering Norton Show.
You can join for free and get early access to our episodes.
That's right.
And of course we post things like mini-sodes there and phone, memo, notes and things and
so you have access to some of that.
Just for free.
Some of it if you want to do a paid support you can get even more access to things.
You maybe get sticker sent to you, etc.
etc.
But it's free to just start and we'd love to have you over there so please join us.
And you can also write to us at Mandering Norton Show at gmail.com and let us know what we should
do for a 300th episode.
Good.
Good.
You can check us out on Facebook.
We have just a Facebook page but we also have a group Mandering Norton Show and we also
have an Instagram that we're active on Mandering Norton Show and Phil usually posts little snippets
of our adventures on there.
Yeah.
When I do vacation stuff I usually post pictures on Mandering Norton Show and I do it on
my vacation pants so follow us there.
We also have an Amazon store.
Well storefront.
What do you call it?
Yeah, storefront.
We have an Amazon storefront where you can support us.
If you go to amazon.com slash shop slash my vacation pants then you just click through
there and you do your shopping with you normally want an Amazon and then whatever you get
we might get like a little bit of a kick back.
Apparently we're a bronze tier and I need to post some content so that we maintain our
bronze tier status.
So if you want to help us maintain our bronze tier status which I don't know what that means
do this.
It doesn't cost you any extra money.
There's a link to it on our Facebook page on our website which is Mandering Norton
Show dot com and other places I think like on our YouTube channel I don't know I put
it around so you can find it Amazon dot com slash shop slash my vacation pants.
And buy your shop is usual.
That's right.
And then we'll read it on the show if someone buys something.
We've been getting click.
There's none of this.
It is enough.
Lots of clicks.
But see what happens if you click on it and then you save it for a while you've got
to reactivate.
You have to click into it again right because it won't if you just put in your card and
not buy it it won't go through yeah anyway that's a cool way to support us and of course
you can also join our group on Facebook as you mentioned it's particularly important
recently because we've been doing our audio book series we're going to continue it on
this show and that's where you can find the illustrations for the book that we're reading
out loud.
I take a picture and put it up on there.
Yeah.
All right.
So let's see other types of news.
This last weekend we did another pop box presents with the enigmatic foe and it was
really good and very cool and he's cool and good guy.
No Jared is really cool.
Love having one on the show.
You can find that on pop box music on the Facebook page or else on the YouTube channel
for pop box music as well and of course our last one grand motel is up there as well.
We're going to take a little hiatus over spring break and stuff but we're back with more
exciting artists soon.
That's cool.
That's cool.
It's so fun to do this.
In the week since we last recorded it has been there's been a lot of packing and preparing
for our upcoming trip.
We're going away.
We're going away.
It's for the whole time not a day to spare.
Yeah.
Well we we leave on like the Saturday.
Yeah.
Spring breaks on Friday.
Well I know but that's a part of a day part of a day and we come back the day before.
That's right.
So you will keep an eye on Instagram and things if you want some updates from us but other
than that we're not going to see you again for a couple of weeks here.
The only other thing really is that Luke and I went out to a concert.
Steve Taylor.
Yeah.
I kind of decided to do that last minute.
Yeah.
It was really cool.
It was worth it.
We had such a fun time.
Steve Taylor playing his first concert in California in 12 years.
I was at the last one and it was amazing.
Luke came out with me and we had super fun listening to his songs on the way out so he
was all prepared for it.
I you know he's listened to it some with me but we got them all all caught up on the
likely ones that he would play and it was super super fun.
And he was he said he was like kicking around and jumping around.
If you're not familiar Steve Taylor he's an artist that's been around like his first
album was 1982 I want to say and you know he's just always been known for like wild staging
and texting jumps in the air.
He can do the splits mid-air.
He can kick up over his own head.
He like jumps around and spins and flops over on the ground and stuff and he's 68 now
but you wouldn't know it.
He's still like skinny as a rail and did all of those aforementioned acts.
It was fantastic watching them in super super cool show.
He's very impressive.
Yeah he is still they're doing a little bit of tour.
He's heading up like the west coast and then back somewhere I don't know so if you're
interested he's like oh my gosh I haven't thought it's the Taylor in a while.
Look it up.
He's doing a cool cool series of shows definitely worth catching.
All right.
Okay well we're going to move along we've got a couple of segments to do and we've got
a fun one coming up.
It's time for top five.
Every time with bell rings we give our top five.
All right we are playing one of our favorite games here on the show tonight we're going
to play top five and we've brought some very special guests to help us with our top
five.
It's just I think was it Audrey that actually suggested this one?
Yes.
We have Audrey and Luke here to be on the show.
Say hello.
Hi.
Hello.
And Audrey actually suggested this week's top five.
So we're going to go through it.
The way we do this dear listeners is we just read off our top five as we'll compare to
what we got.
We'd love to hear what your top five's are.
I'm writing to us.
Think about it as you listen to ours write your own down and then write to us in Mandarin
or show gmo.com and tell us what your top five are.
And tonight's top five is the top five TV show themes.
But they have to be ones is a couple just to narrow it down a little bit.
These are theme songs that have lyrics.
So you know something that's like a classic like night writer, great theme but doesn't
count.
Did it did it?
Did it?
We're on the part where it goes.
Not right.
We're going through the night with the tucking card.
Did it?
Did it?
Did it?
Did it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That one was not released for American audiences.
Oh.
So that doesn't count.
Yeah.
So it's got to be song with lyrics and they has to be a song that was specifically created
for the show.
So a song again show like freaks and geeks where they license an older song doesn't count.
So that's the stipulations in the creation of it.
But we realize we need to do one further distinction.
So we're actually doing a double top five.
Otherwise no one is a top ten.
That's right.
We're doing five plus five is ten five live action shows and five animated shows.
All right.
So what order are we going to do it in here?
All this first.
All this then youngest then youngest and oldest.
See what's to go.
I want to go last.
I get to go a long time with my honorable mentions though.
All this female, the youngest female, the youngest male and the oldest male.
All right.
Mommy wants to go first.
Yeah.
All right.
You're going to go first.
So we're going to start with live action and then we'll do a separate round of
enemies to start with your live action.
Here are my live actions in no particular order.
Okay.
The top is heat and paint.
Yeah.
It's a song called, Hey Sandy.
Hey, Sandy.
By the band, Polaris.
Did you know my eye, eye, eye, eye?
Yeah.
We got to sing a little clip of it.
Oh.
Yeah.
You can't sing it.
Then isn't even a top theme song.
We can't like put the song in it for copyright reasons.
Right.
But no one's going to claim what we just did.
It's not for copyright reasons.
Hey, Sandy.
Title this list to TV show theme songs that slap.
Wow.
That's that's low key.
Awesome.
What you just did.
That's low key.
That's tough.
This a tough list.
Okay.
Okay.
My next one is Shalala, baby, family ties, the song without us sung by Johnny Mathis and
Denise Williams.
Did you do your research or did you just notice?
No, I said you could look up the names of her.
No, I'm going to say I just was curious.
All right.
Let's sing it.
Oh.
Shalala.
Oh, I thought you were singing it.
What would you do, baby?
Without us.
Right on and on.
I got.
What would you do, baby?
Okay.
I'd recreate this one on.
Alex, you're kidding as my friend.
Yeah.
All right.
My other podcast with Keith.
Next is one that's just been really hitting me emotionally lately.
Okay.
It's from the show Shrinking.
It's called Frightening Fishies and it's by Ben Gibbert from Death Cab for Cutie.
He did make it specifically for the show.
You did.
He looked at that.
Okay.
You got to sing it.
Yeah.
Well, is it even a great song if you can't sing it?
Now that we're singing other ones, but it's just beautiful.
You agree with me?
I do, but can you sing a little bit?
Come on, let me sing a little bit.
It's not on my list.
Well, I can't.
I think your list has been invalidated.
Just kidding.
No, no, that's a great song.
It's a really good song.
It is.
Hoping to get along to the thing.
I have no idea.
Okay.
Well, that's good.
That's definitely not how good.
I think it's when it's on.
Look it up.
It's great.
I don't know the words.
Oh, wait.
I can't mention that theme song yet.
Okay.
The love boat.
Oh, yeah.
Uh, sung by Jack Jones.
Soon we'll be making a note.
And it's really hoping the love boat series will be on the next
princess cruise we're going on.
It better be.
And because have we talked about how Luke is really into
80s television right now?
I think any of the second half, 19 hundreds television.
Well, just love about start out in the 70s.
That's true.
All right.
And the last one is Save by the Bell.
Perform by Michael Damien.
If you teach your pops the tests, you know you're in a mess.
Yeah, that wasn't written for that show.
And your dog ate all your homework last night.
That wasn't written for that show.
It's all right.
That's an old song.
Because you're saved by the bed.
I don't think it is.
You look it up.
I'll look it up.
All right.
While you're looking it up.
Um, we're going to go who's going next?
You guys want me to go next?
I have some alternatives.
Oh.
You're going to do alternatives.
And I didn't do my cartoon.
No, we're doing it in two separate ways.
Okay.
Obviously this is going to be a really long segment.
Really was hoping this would go fast.
I thought we would all do our research.
When, when have we gone fast with top five?
All right.
According to this, it was written for the show.
I thought so.
All right.
There is an older song called, say, by the bell.
But I guess it's a different song.
This one.
You said the original one was written in the 60s.
This is one very.
A very.
Of the time.
Yeah, but you remember a lot of things in the in the 80s.
Sounded very 50s.
Yeah.
All right.
But I'm saying there was a lot of sort of a different.
So a cartoon of different.
So you're done.
But I did have some alternate.
Some honorable mentions.
Clarissa explains it all.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
That's not lyrics.
Yeah.
They say.
Way cool.
Way cool.
Those are spoken word.
No, no, no, no.
All right.
And then nine or twenty.
It doesn't have lyrics.
So you can't mint.
It's completely off of the thing.
It's not even an honorable mention.
No, no, no, no.
You're gonna do it.
five in the middle ones that you could do that.
But now you just do it.
Now we can never do it.
All right, Audrey.
Okay.
So first we'll say the ones that we haven't commented.
Okay, you can comment.
Two.
Okay.
I put peep and pee.
Yes.
Of course.
And I also put the love book.
Oh, I don't know how that went.
No, I didn't.
I just went to the.
I just.
I don't even think I put like the official title, the guy that made the love boat theme was the same guy that did the
One with the two ladies in it. Can't remember what it's called
The one with the two ladies
Oh, the Vernon Shirley. Oh, that is a great one. I even think about that
So my those are the two that we haven't common
Now the other three that I put the Adam's family
Wait, hey, we did do this already, didn't we?
No, the Vernon Shirley. Why did we talk about the Vernon Shirley?
No, no, but I talked with you about the Vernon Shirley on the thing and then we talked about it on our show
Yeah, but you know what top five that was your
That's just like the game of the different show. All right, I know
Lending dad all mixing together
Okay, I need to say me long keep going
And then I also put a series of unfortunate events
How does that look? Oh
Yeah, that's great
One fun thing to is each episode they have a distinct like they have an extra part that's like distinct to the episode
So there's really like yeah, we're singing about the song what happens to that? Yeah, and then my other one that I put
It's kind of like it's not in every episode is only really in one but the one division theme song
They have a division
There's different iterations
I like all of the iterations, but that's probably my favorite of that's good one to him. Yeah, so those are my
All right, all right, we want to go here. Let me go. No, I want to go. Okay. I should have gone first because I thought I was so original
Audrey and I only had one different one. Okay. Okay. All right. So first of all peep and peep. Yeah
Oh three for three
Serious unfortunate events interesting. Okay, the love boat. Yes, one division. Yeah
And then I also put as an audible mention I put family ties
Okay, I
Probably would do family ties because I was just trying to think of any live action TV shows that I know
The themes have words. So I put community though. I probably switch family ties in community
Those were my order. Wait, community was here was my fifth. Okay. I'm probably oh in community. I don't know the words, but it's like
I
One day
Yeah
And then like I mentioned earlier learning truly
Yeah
I did realize through this that I feel like there's a lot more kids shows and like animated shows that have
Theme songs theme songs with lyrics. Okay. Well, so this is interesting. That's all you're right. Yeah
Okay, so mine I do have a couple of overlaps but old old TV shows were really where this trend like all the old shows had
A lot so mine do do tend a little bit older
But all like whenever I do these things it stresses me out because there's I like a lot of stuff
I like a lot of TV shows and all of the ones you guys said or all ones I would put on my list. You have all different
Uh, no, I do not I'll say the ones I have that are the same first
Pete and Pete
It is I mean like how do you talk about their own band? They have the band in they got an indie band like
doing like mumble lyrics the whole thing and it's fantastic
It's the coolest theme song that's ever been done
Then I have a course family ties
Because I do a show about family ties Alex be cute. It's my friend good and you saying it and it's iconic
Etc. Um, and then I had Adam's family which we order you said that one right and I mean
That's why you're making a face when I said it
I was like, what are you like thinking of right now you because you were doing your like
They're just thinking which ones, but I have two that do not overlap at all all right
So one of them is Gilligan's island
That was thinking about that one of the all time and I can sing everywhere of it now sit right back
Can you hear a tale a tale of a thankful trip
This started on this topic. I love or this hodyship right okay
Let's skip her to the million right this one with the movie stuff
Versa red marion right
A three hour two or a three hour two I mean how do you not
Feelings that it tells the whole story in the lyrics
Right, I mean let's fantastic. I mean in old shows you kind of had to be that and then one other that you've
probably heard me sing and I don't think you've ever actually seen the show
But I know you've heard me sing a lot is the green acre steam
Green occurs in the place. I'm talking to the children
Keep man hadn't just give me that country side
New York is where I'd rather stay. I'm sure you heard me sing
Because I'll tell you the thing the reason that I always sing it whenever we're doing house chores
I always say the chores
The stores
Fresh air do you do to tell square no
I mean, I heard you say green. Maybe it's just when I'm home alone and I sing in a lot because that's when I do my chores
Okay, but I do have a couple of honorable mentions things that you guys said all of the ones you said
I also mentioned community livern and trillie, but then happy days is
Which livern and trillie spun off from how does happy days? Sunday to the happy days
Now I'm getting it mixed up with the verna trillie, but anyway, that's how it goes. Oh
So those are good. That's a great. Did you hear the one I said? No, what we're not on the family
That's a good one too. Again all old sitcoms had like theme songs the facts of life right facts of life
About you
The first prince of L.A. Yeah, oh
Okay, I just wanted to make sure because there was another honorable mention
But I was almost positive I knew it wasn't an original one, but I was like the one you're
Yeah, yes, but that is not an original. That's correct. Yeah, that's a they have such good music
But it's licensed older songs to fit with the time
Oh, what about see this is probably another one that I mentioned when I talked with Keith
I really did we just do this on Alex P. Keaton? No stop because the other one that the other one that I say
The other one that I remember saying now that I'm saying it is moving on a
Jefferson's team
That's not what this is
If it's on there, I'm gonna just crack up so hard
What is that like a phrase? Yeah
Oh see
No, you can't crack up. Yeah, I'm not this is you think this is cracking up. Just you wait
Why don't you get a family ban turn? Have you ever done a top five on that show?
Well, no, but Keith and I were talking about oh, we should do a top five on this show
And so I think I was like giving like a preview of it
Well, it's good both listeners of your listeners of both shows get to hear a bit
That's good because you said you suggested an audio but then Keith and I I mean Keith suggested it separately
But I definitely I suggested it without Keith's influence
Don't go give him credit for my thinking
Oh, but by saying that what you're admitting is because you never listen to Alex Keaton as my friend
Oh
I was never done it because how he he would have influenced you if you listen to our show and you heard it
Okay
Yeah, self-own you own your
Self-own
Moving along. Okay, moving along moving on up to the east side. So are you gonna start and we're gonna go back?
We're gonna reverse order sure
Top five animated yeah, but I have like a lot of honorable mentions. I've a lot of
All right, this one is really hard because as much as I like the live action ones
I had like way more animated
Okay, here's my ones that wound up in my actual top five though
First up duck tails
How do you not I mean
That's the ultimate right now in my honorable mention then I list just basically the rest of the Disney afternoon because all of them are amazing
Like Chippendale's rescue rangers
Right? Yeah, no, I don't I want to wait to come because I have a lot of tailspin. Oh, we oh tailspin duck dark wing dark wing duck
Better look out you bad. Well, no
Let's get at least mention some of my honorable mentions like in reaction years because I also have tailspin is one of my honorable
Yeah, I mean all those are great, but I had to pick what I did is I picked one Disney afternoon one
Yeah, and then what was duck tails. That's good. If this is one that at least mom you will understand, but I don't know if everyone else
Duck presents
Disney Channel duck presents
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no duck presents
No
That was like old Disney Channel
Exciting part and sometimes it came on early enough. Yeah, it was like early in the morning before school
You could catch the beginning of it for you had to leave for school
Love the old Donald Duck cartoons
Fantastic duck presents. Okay, then I got danger mouse
Danger mouse. He's the greatest. He's fantastic. The greatest he created in the world
Danger mouse powerhouse
I loved danger mouse old Nickelodeon. Look at I've watched through a lot of danger mouse. Yeah
And then I got Phineas and Ferb
I mean the the yeah, and we sing that all the time, right?
There's a hundred and four days of summer vacation
The long does the ending
They're known for their song. They are I mean every episode has like a perfect song in it
So along with that I have my little Murphy's Law as my honorable mention
Because it's weird out and it's fantastic, but Phineas and Ferb is the one that like started there
You know again, I had to pick one from their universe
And then finally and this one might throw you guys. I don't know. Alvin in the chipmunks
Out cuz he and we come
It's had faction with chipmunks. I honestly couldn't remember which of the show
So I didn't write it down. That's like the 80s one
Okay, of course it is
Do
Do do do do do so that's my that's my actual top five. I'll let you guys go
And then I'll tell you if you're in my other owner will make it pop up. I have a lot. All right. You're gonna go next week
Um, yeah, cuz we're going backwards backwards and made it all right, so
We've got Phineas and Ferb
Of course. Yeah, that's the same
And
And the other overlaps danger mouse danger mouse. Yes
Um, I feel like I thought of everything I would possibly put for this. There's probably more I forgot
Um, you know as far as honorable mentions and then for my other main ones
I put adventure time. Oh
That's super good. I didn't even think of that one. Wait need to figure out. Okay. I can replace this if this doesn't count
But I put teen times to go
Anyway counts. That's what this bill T T T T T T. Yeah, that's that's like I like it. Yeah, I love that one
It's like a version of the original teen times theme, but seem better. Yeah, that's good. And then I'll put spectacular spider-man
Oh
Yeah, that's a great one. So do you want me to wait in my arm? Wait, it's the only thing I said for
Yes, hey, we get what was your top four in your mouse Phineas and Ferb
Venture time teen times go. Oh, that's right. Okay. Okay. Okay. So yeah, save your other one
See if let other people overlap and wait. Remind me what yours. I just want to know which one's overlapped
Oh, but in the chipmunk Phineas and Ferb that tells that presents danger. Okay. So my overlapping ones
Is I put Phineas and Ferb? Oh, that's three for three. I put duct tails. Oh, and I put adventure time
Okay, okay. What's your other? My other two? Uh, I put power puff girls. Oh
Oh
That doesn't count. What that's the credits theme
I said you could do that. No, you said you could mention it, but it can't be part of your top five
You said that because I'm okay, okay
Okay, what is it just like start with? Well, no, that's all it's over the end credit. Dang. I don't know what I should put that
You know, my honorable mentions. I put my lemur face all of it. Okay. We'll flood that in there
I think this counts because it has a single word in it. I put Harvey beaks
Because it's like mostly
See, I put that in honorable mentions as well. My other honorable mention is that like the uh
Oh, wait, no, it's never mind. This doesn't count. I was thinking of the credits thing again. What?
Uh, I was thinking of big city greens, but the opening thing is just
So it's again over. Yeah, we need to do an instrumental one too. I know, but for tonight
Barbie life in the dream
The way
But that oh in fact the honorable mention for
Uh me, right look me and my girls. Oh
And then me and my girls
To me and my girls themes that you loved
We can take it easy at the dream house look watch the lot of
Barbie and little friends
Girl
Yeah, I can either impress or embarrass a lot of embarrass myself in front of a lot of my friends by saying oh, yeah
I watch Barbie and my little pony those pet shop
Talking
Pony is another really good
All right, what is your actual top five? Oh, my little pony. I was the one who was friendship could be actually top five finies
And for duck tails adventure time Harvey beaks and we'll say my own Murphy's lock
Okay, I think I actually put duck tails as my top instead of
One of them, but it doesn't really matter because
This top five is exploded into a top a million. Okay. All right. You know you're up last. So
I can't remember. Well, Donald Duck presents I put
Um, I put tailspin. Yeah, okay
I put duck tails
Um, I put the Harvey beaks theme
But I used it in a real I liked it so much and then
One that made my sister used to sing at the top of her own
Lones which you mentioned your honorable mentions is the gummy bear
Yeah, another Disney afternoon
Not to be confused with Armagami bear
No, this is the original
Now what's funny is two things one you didn't think you could find enough animated ones and then I said Disney after new and then that solves it
Yeah, I do have one honorable thing. Okay, and it's the my little pony from my
It went my little pony
Well, that's the new one. Oh, there wasn't a my little pony
Okay, okay
Okay, other honorable mentions that did not make it out of my know that I do have to mention
My own Murphy's law was mentioned, right?
And we've seen that performed live. Yeah, oh with weird out
And another just I had to mention because Luke and I just witnessed Steve Taylor and saw another cartoon
Beams on perform live. He does the Dead Sea squirrel steam song. Yeah
Which we weren't familiar with before we saw him
But then we looked it up and watching it was really fun
Well, I put that especially an honorable mentions because I love that song
But it was really a series of video releases that wasn't aired on TV. Yeah, yeah
So that put it to honorable mentions because it's a TV show, but it really wasn't on TV
So but yes, that's on my list as well. What about there was one with like underwater
Creatures in the 80s the snorks
The snorks. I remember liking that. Oh, okay. I am well that see the smurfs though also, but the surfs are just
Not really lyrics. I thought of another I don't know if this counts. Well, I guess we would go into live action that I actually might like
I would maybe replace like
Community you with okay is the fraggle rock
Oh
Well, that's a whole separate. That's a puppet show
Yeah, I mean, that's that's a completely different thing
Um
Have you said all your honorable mentions yet? Yes, I am more. Oh, what other honorable mentions. Okay, so
I also put pinky malinky for okay
Um, and then I put dexter's lab. Oh, yeah, the opening is once again the opening theme is
Like all instrumental, but
Dexter's lab. Oh, yeah. Oh, and pinky monkey is
Pinkie mollinky
It's a step-a-feet pinky mollink. What about Doug in Rugrats?
Intramil yeah
Yeah, um, just listing on the instrumentals. Why do we even need it to do that? Yeah, because it's Doug counts with that
Then so the side felt it
Yeah, that's it
So wait, that was like that with that final one there when you said uh
Was the last one you said Dexter's laboratory? Dexter's laboratory. You've just ding ding ding
We've broken the record for the most things listed in a top five segment over the top five
I don't I've lost track like a million
Suggestions ago, so yeah, this is officially our most lengthy and involved top five and I'm definitely gonna think of like other
I know
Well, right in and tell us one. Oh, he was on it. Oh, that's another one
Yeah, all right. I guess we're gonna have to call it. I got to call it here guys
That was an amazing top five. Thank you dear listeners. Please write in tell us your list
See if you can keep it to five. It's difficult looks like pointing. Oh, I have one more what the
misadventures of flapjack
How does that go?
Jack
So that's part of the song. Okay. Yeah, I know that one. Okay, I think what we've learned to be like cartoons around here
All right, I think that's it. I'm putting my foot down unless someone wants to mention Count Duckula
Duckula will come back for instrumental
All right, inspirational things will have to be later. Thank you for joining us our special amazing guests folks best children and best children
Yes, folks and best children. We love you guys. We love you too. We love you
We love the mandarin orange show. You should check them out pretty grief
It's fun for imams. They're so humanitarian. Yeah
All right. Well, are you guys sticking around for our next segment? Are you gonna go off and do your thing?
Well, my thing is homework. So okay
With that, it's time to move on to our next segment which is fiction books
You like fiction books? Fiction books is one of my favorite kinds of books. Do you like fiction?
That's crazy
All right, it's time for fiction books. It's only been like a week or so since we recorded. I assume you haven't quite finished year one
You're still dragging through I wrote a chapter too. Ah, just give it up finish
Uh
Either you're gonna try I think finally kissed
Awesome
All right, well really quickly I just I read two well one and a half I finished
Murder on the links, which was the Agatha Christie when I was reading fantastic
I did get the next one. I had to get it through eBay
I have a ton of Agatha Christie books, but to do them all in order. There's a couple gaps. So
I have the next one. I'm gonna read on our trip
Then I read just a quick book called save me a seat
This is one that we got uh, I don't know from scholastic book film maybe or something
It's just a good one about like a new kid coming uh immigrant
Kid coming to a school in America and then him dealing with like the first day of school
And also a kid who has like learning disabilities already out to school and then
Finding each other and becoming friends and stuff and it was like actually very like heartwarming and insightful
And you know, I wasn't sure because it just kind of seemed like a light but it was really good
It's not one I'm probably gonna keep forever and ever yeah, but I think you guys would enjoy at least a read through of it
So I read a fiction book and forgot what
Well, I'm preparing for a professional development
Okay, okay, most of them are
Nonfiction there was one fiction. Okay, because they're steam related right then so it was but this one was called
city dog country frog
Oh, I sound good. It was about a dog who made friends with a country frog
And it goes through the seasons
Oh
And uh the life cycle of a frog is much shorter than a dog. Yeah, so it deals with that. Wow. That's pretty yet
It's a book for heavy material
Kindergarteners and first graders, but uh, it teaches about
Oh
One season the fox there anymore
So city dog country frog
All right
Well, and then I'm currently about two-thirds of the way through a book
My parents actually recommended to me. It's called Vera Wong's unsolicited advice for murderers
Really funny and uh and good and heartwarming as well
Um, I've had one critique of it
Like it's the kind of thing where I mean it's definitely written at an adult audience, but
There's nothing inherently like
Inappropriate about it like I think our kids would enjoy it except that she just throws in a lot of random like really bad language
But out of nowhere like it just totally doesn't fit the rest of the book
So my advice to an author is think about what is the purpose of the language that you're using sir
If it's necessary if you're writing a gangster violent book or something like that
Okay, they're gonna pass like I'm not giving this to kids
But a book like this especially since I've been reading a lot of Agatha Christie that deals with like murders and you know
In in the somewhat playful way where the detectives, you know
I mean, it's not like like humorous, but then it's a lighter
Look at it, you know, it's not I mean obviously you can have a lot more gritty
Look at murder and stuff
But it's the kind of thing where you can hand this to a teenager and be like yeah, you should read this one
But
This one has way too much bad language that just isn't necessary to the story
So think about your audience even for podcasters like yeah, you can cast a lot
But you can get a lot more people to listen to it if you don't right think about it a lot of people
I don't listen to it during carpool and I mean obviously that's on some people that's their brand is saying inappropriate stuff
So I get it like that's part of it, but is it necessary for what you're doing
And if it's not make it so it's more widely available
All right
That being said I do enjoy the book a lot. It's good. It's just you know
But with that it's time to jump into chapter three of our ongoing audio book reading of the time trap
By Leo P Kelly if you haven't listened to the last two
Chapters you're gonna want to go back to our last two episodes and listen to them
See what decodable texts we're gonna learn today
Chapter three is called the jewels of planet x12
You remember correctly
They uh have gone Jeff and Maria have gone back in time 300 years. Yeah, they're on planet x12
They saw a giant lion thing it shot by a glass spaceship thing and they hope they don't see any more animals like that
Here we go with chapter three
Jeff and Maria walked past the body of the dead animal
It's the same in any place and anytime Jeff said looking at the dead animal life is hard
People in animals have to fight to live
Some lose their fight some winning
Wow, let's see let's dig
His voice sounded sad to Maria she wondered what he was thinking about
Was he thinking about the dead animal?
She waited for him to go on, but he said no more
He said out loud that he was talking about the dead animal. It's pretty clear
Suddenly she stopped. Oh Jeff look at that
She pointed to a field that was full of flowers. It was right in front of them
Is it beautiful?
Those flowers are special Jeff said let me show you what I mean
Look to the edge of a lake that was next to the field of flowers
He splashed water from the lake on some of the flowers
Flowers began to sing
There's so he had no words, but it was the most beautiful song that Maria had ever heard
She could not speak she just stood there and listened to the yellow and blue flowers sing
Finally, she said I like them better than the flowers on her
Wow
Water makes them sing Jeff said you should hear them when it rains
When they are all wet. Well, it's really great
Thank you
Jeff
After Maria took a picture of the flowers they walked back to the city
The song of the flowers followed them
Once inside the city again, they went toward the museum
People passed close to them
But the people cannot see or hear Jeff and Maria
This was because they had pressed button number two on their timers
Don't forget this is
In case you forgot what happened last chapter button number two
Shall we go inside the museum Maria asked Jeff?
Yes, let's go in Maria went in first Jeff following her
They stood and looked at the beautiful things inside the museum
Statues stood in the corners of the room pictures made with many colors of paint hung on the walls
The statues looked like the people of planet x12 the pictures were of the people and the animals that lived on the planet
One picture became Maria's favorite almost at once
It was a picture of the field of flowers that they had just seen
But they weren't singing
I wish I could take that picture back with me Maria said it's so very nice. I wish it were mine
The past must stay the way it is Jeff said we must not change anything in it
Don't you ever want to change your own past Jeff?
Maria asked the question because Jeff's voice sounded sad
She wondered if something in his own past had made him sad
He looked at her his look was not a happy one his eyes were sad
Maria wished that she had not asked the question
He said I was very much in love with a girl once I think she loved me too
But her love for me didn't last she left me
I'm sorry
Jeff looked away Maria couldn't see his face
You said I guess that's why I like to travel back in time baby. I'm afraid to live in the present
I feel safer in the past I guess I don't want to be hurt again
Oh my gosh
We just went from like singing flowers and they talk like all baby-ish
So regret heartbreak right loss
Sometimes love doesn't die Maria said not if it's true love not if two people really care about each other
I'd like to believe you Jeff said
Maria left him and walked to a far quarter of the room
So did the statue that stood in the quarter she took several pictures of it as she was doing so
She almost forgot where she was and about Jeff
She's a very short attention span
But when she heard him shout she ran back to him
What's the matter Jeff?
It's Kendall Jeff said he's here. There were Kendall's the bad guy
Hmm
Maria saw that what Jeff had said was true
Carl Kendall stood across the room from them
Stay where you are Kendall Jeff yelled and drop those jewels
Maria saw that Kendall held many jewels in his hands
She saw where they had come from Kendall had taken them from their places in the museum
I have them now Kendall said to Jeff and I'm going to keep them
Jeff went to where Kendall stood
Put them back now
But Kendall didn't put the jewels back
Instead he put all of them in his pockets
Jeff tried to grab Kendall but Kendall jumped away
The second time Jeff tried to grab him
Kendall hit him
We got a picture here by the way
Of Kendall holding the jewels. I'll be posting that in the mirror or to the group
Look for that illustration
Back to the exciting actions
Yes
Kendall hit him
Then Jeff hit Kendall
Kendall fell to the floor
Get up Jeff said to him and drop those jewels they belong here in the museum
For a minute Kendall did not move
But then just as Jeff reached for him he got to his feet
You better worry about that girl over there instead of about me Kendall said
It was a trick
Jeff turned to see where Maria was
When he did so Kendall grabbed a small statue and hit Jeff on the head with it
Jeff Maria called out
She ran to where he lay on the floor
Before she could get to him Kendall kicked Jeff on the side of the head
Stop it Maria yelled
Kendall laughed
His laugh was an ugly sound in the air
Maria called Jeff's name but he didn't answer her
His eyes were closed
Maria looked at the Kendall
He was gone and so were the jewels
The end of chapter 3
They kill off Jeff
We'll have to wait until next episode to find out
Very dark foot
Yeah, it went from flowers to like Jeff's unrequited love
In his like depression
I love the action scene too
He hit him
Then he hit him back
Well they got it right at him decodable form
That is the time track
He can't use a lot of flower relings
Oh it's a separate about the flowers
