The Most Segregated Hour: Religion, Politics, and Pulpit Power

0:00Welcome to Karen Hunter is awesome. I am Karen Hunter and it is said that the most segregated hour in America is Sunday morning at 11 a.m. I think that's the exact quote. And matter fact, when people try to call up the radio show to tell me that it was somebody else, we landed on Martin Luther King, Jr. being the first person to say it or to utter this notion that somehow in this country on Sunday is when we are our most divided. And it's weird because we're all in church, right? We're all supposedly praying to the same God. And if you are Christian, you are the same Jesus, but our Jesus may look different and therein lies the problem that somehow we have galvanized around religion, but also religion has been used as a wedge. And one could argue that perhaps it has always been used. One

1:03could argue that perhaps religion, the institution of religion was designed to do the very thing that it is doing, which is keep people divided. The other problem is even those people who say and claim to love the, call themselves a Christian and love the Bible don't read Greek and they don't know Aramaic. They can't possibly know where Jesus Christ meant. And then when you couple that with the council that put together the book, cobbled together the book and decided which books would go in and which books would not go in or even that it would be a book. Who is Gutenberg? Why is the first book ever printed a Bible? What's about that? The very first book printed was the Bible. That is not an accident. And it's also not an accident that the vast majority of people who read the Bible can't read at the great level that the Bible is written in. And then we can go to the Quran where I think that the numbers like 90% of the people who follow Islam are illiterate in that language.

2:09So you're relying on men mostly people to tell you interpret for you what God wants. And in many ways what God wants is what power wants. And that's not the true God. But I digress on a Sunday I'm going to use this space as counter programming to football because you know I boycott it since Colin Kaepernick and I haven't missed it. I mean, let me not lie. I've missed it because I enjoy the comradery. I used to go to football games. You know, I live in New Jersey and we would do the whole cooking out in the parking lot tailgating. And it was a lot of fun. I've been to quite a few live games. It was a lot of fun. It's part of community though. You find your crew, you're eating your burgers and hot dogs and you're rooting for your team. But it's really about the community. And so I've decided I can get that without having to go to a football game and supporting an institution that is openly in opposition to

3:11my liberation. Obviously and who are also okay with using people who look like me to keep us in bondage. We can have that argument. We got a discussion. I was actually reading a letter that I received from somebody who went to care and hugged to show.com and hit the contact page and sent me a letter. But we also had a caller who said they went to a church. And the pastor was preaching political ideology and rhetoric and he was a demagogue talking about candidates in Texas. Okay. And Ken Paxton is running to be the senator and he is a man that has a very shady background. And I'm going to talk about corruption. But morality wise, the man is a dumpster fire of demonic energy. And the pastor is praising him because what we do know is religion

4:11as an institution is about power and power in the hands of a very few to control the masses through the pulpit. This has been the institution that was created. And this is why they even had a slave Bible, a special Bible to go out and indoctrinate people who were in bondage to fall in line. And so I'm not anti God. As you know, I love me the Lord. I pray every day before I even open my mouth to get on the airwaves. But what we're talking about is not spirituality is not a walk with a higher power with the creator. It is not an introspection on being the best version of yourself and being what you were wondrously made to be. This is not that. This is power. And so we should know that. She said, Karen, I heard the caller who called in about going to a church. We also had somebody to call in. They're sitting in a church. And the pastor is preaching horrible stuff. And when I say horrible stuff, the pastor's preaching not out of Jesus, not out of the Bible, not out of love. But it is out there. So, you know, denigrating candidates and doing all this political stuff from a pulpit and not that pastors can't be political because we've had quite a few shout out to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. and Martin King, Jr. Senior shout out to all the pastors or Otis Moss III. And pastor Frederick Haynes is in Congress and Jasmine Crockett's seat right now. Probably is going to be in that seat because it was Jerry Manardered away from her. He won that particular district. He's a pastor. There's a lot of pastors that are political, but they lead with love. Pastor Walren,

6:14just off top of my head. These are up more on Mondays. You know, we have plenty of people who understand that Christ was political and very much about liberation theology. That guy that you're in the church with, that's not who he is. So, you're sitting there and then you're asking, should I, you know, I don't want to leave, but why are you staying? Why are you in a place? And listen, you don't go to church for the people. You go for the message. Yes, I get it. You go for a community. You don't forsake the assembly. The assembly shows up many different ways. Jesus was never in a particular church unless he was turned over tables. Last time I looked, rabbi, last time he was in a temple, was he turned over tables? Yes. Yes, he was. His ministry was out with the people in them streets. Not in a building on a Sunday or a Saturday, whichever you think is Saturday. I'm not going to get into your walk, your faith, but I will, I will question you. Is it? What would Jesus do? That's what I'm

7:18going to throw back. So, so Denise said, Karen, I heard the caller who called in about going to a church and was, the church was backing Paxton and had negative comments about Mr. Tallerico. And I went to a similar church in New Jersey that was primarily Melanemic. I have Melanin. I was just considering going back because of how they taught the Bible. I feel God answered my question by me hearing this exchange. Thank you. And let me say this. I forgot who was it who said the most segregated day of the year, the week is on Sunday. Was it King or was it a comedian? Was it Gregory? Was a king? Somebody said it. Somebody said it is true. I would ask why is that? Why is that? Why is there why Jesus is in churches? Why is that? Why is Jesus looked nothing like the Jesus? Why was that? Would you say who was this man? Am okay. Thank you. Thank you. I knew somebody could have been digged. Gregory, but I think about, you know, Sunday being the most segregated. How? How? How? How you in a church is all white? You could ask me how much in a church is all black

8:21racism? That's an easy answer. Racism. Easy. Racism. That's an easy answer. How you in a church is all white? How? How? How? Ask yourself that. And how is a black person? Are you going to a church? That's all white people. That's that's talking down. How? Why would you sit there? I don't even understand. We got enough stressors. I'm not going to get the stressors where I'm supposed to be spiritually filled. You're not going to stress me out and make me feel bad when I'm supposed to be in community with the Holy Spirit. Not not that day. There's audio proof. This foot of brother Nubian particular that it was actually King and he sent it on television. Plants miss. I think it is one of the tragedies of our nation, one of the shameful tragedies. I have 11 a clock on Sunday morning is one of the most segregated hours. It's not the most segregated hours in Christian America. I definitely think the Christian church should be integrated and in a church that stands against integration and that has a segregated body is standing against

9:28the spirit and the teachings of Jesus Christ and it fails to be a true witness. But this is something that the church would have to do itself. I don't think church integration will come through legal processes. I might say that my church is not a segregating church is segregated but not segregating. It would welcome white members. Malcolm said that the most segregated hour in America is high noon on Sunday. I think Baldwin also referenced that and said it as well. But y'all get the point.
