Well, it was a tough weekend for many of us. If you're a KU fan, that's Stung yesterday
losing the same John's. If you're a Mizzou fan Friday night, you stay up late, past your
bedtime. You got to watch a loss to Miami. At least my loss for Villanova came out of
the way early in the day, although blowing a 10 point lead in your first trip to the
NCAA tournament in four years to Utah State is not an easy pill to swallow, but I swallowed
it as best as I could and I moved on. I kept the Villanova flag up until Saturday afternoon
around lunchtime and then I begrudgingly took it down. If we're all looking for somebody
to root for, let's root for Iowa. The Iowa Hawkeyes beat Florida yesterday, 73, 72. They get
to the sweet 16. Their head coach Ben McCollum was a legendary D2 head coach at Northwest
Missouri State. He won several D2 national championships there. And on top of that, Iowa's
got a bunch of guys from right here in the Kansas City area. You have Joy Matione, a blue
Valley Northwest alum. You have a Tavium Banks, Ruskin, Stanley, one of the players from
there, Cam Maniyahu. You have Isaiah Howard from Platsburg High School. And the leading
score is a young man named Bennett Sturts, who went to Liberty High School. The Hawkeyes
are now in the sweet 16 for the first time since 1999 and they will take on Nebraska coming
up on Thursday. Iowa fans and Nebraska fans typically don't mesh well together. That
is going to be one of the best games of the week in the sweet 16. And speaking of the leading
score from Liberty High School, Bennett Sturts, you've seen a lot of this over the last
a few days during the NCAA tournament guys being interviewed on national TV, whether it's
before a game, halftime or after a game and invoking and talking about their faith. Here
is what Bennett Sturts Liberty High School alum had to say after they beat the defending
champion Florida Gators yesterday afternoon. There you go. That is something that we heard
a lot of over the weekend from many of these young men. Heck, the CN one of the CN players
on Thursday afternoon when they were leading Duke at halftime in a 16 one game. And I forget
who the guy was from Siena, but he was like leaning into his faith at halftime. Now they
end up losing, but he wasn't shying away from it. You saw a lot of that over the last few days.
And it is a breath of fresh air to see more and more of that from young men and athletes,
whether it's at the college level or at the professional level. So I'll pull for Iowa and I
saw this too, you know, if you draw a circle from like just outside of Lincoln all the way to
just west of Detroit, seven of the sweet 16 teams are in the circle that stretches from Lincoln
Nebraska through Des Moines across to Chicago, South the Springfield through Indiana looping into
northwest Ohio into Southern Michigan. When you look at the teams left in the sweet 16 nearly half
of them are from that part of the country. So it is a good NCAA tournament from a lot of white
guys in the upper Midwest. They're having a good run here in the NCAA tournament. So good for them
and it should be a great week of hoops in the sweet 16, even though our local teams are no longer
in it. As for Bill self, I know it's getting a lot of attention here locally. When he said after the
game last night, he's not sure if he's going to come back to coach next year. He's going to talk
to the family and figure it out. We know he's had the hard issues over the last few years, a couple
of procedures missed a Colorado game this year. I believe Bill self's going to come back. I don't
think he's going to retire. I just think he loves this too much that he will keep it going for at
least another couple of years. And then maybe he hangs it up after that. But I do think that he
wants to go out feeling better about how he's done as a head coach in this NIL transfer portal
era, which he really hasn't done well since that national championship in 22. He's been knocked
out of the NCAA tournament for straight years before reaching the second weekend of the sweet 16.
