The Next Frontier Files: Ask the Robot vs. the Tried & True (vol. 4)
About this episode
A robot showed up in everyone's pocket, and it changed how guests answered one simple question for an entire year. This episode of The Next Frontier Files rewinds to year four, when artificial intelligence collided with gut health, hormone balance, and a growing call to return to species-specific diet basics.
Jenn Trepeck weaves together voices from across the year four of Salad With a Side of Fries to show which predictions about wellness coaching and technology came true and which the industry has already moved past.
What You Will Learn in This Episode:
✅ How artificial intelligence started shaping the conversation around personal health and wellness coaching back in year four
✅ Why several guests pushed back on technology and pointed back to basic eating instead
✅ How gut health, blood sugar, and hormone balance kept surfacing as a common thread across very different specialties
✅ Which prediction about body positivity and the fitness industry turned out to be the most accurate in the show's history

There's some amazing things that could possibly come out of artificial intelligence that can really probably advance us beyond what anybody can describe. We're gonna end up going back to the shredded six packs, shredded stuff. What should a chimpanzee eat? What should a zebra eat? What should a gorilla eat? And they'll tell you they're not gonna give you this long fancy answer that they're 14 different diets. This is the next frontier files. Welcome to Salad with a Side of Fries. I'm your host, Jen Trepik, talking wellness and weight loss for real life. We're here to clear up the myths, misinformation, bad signs and marketing to teach you how to eat and how to cheat. Are you ready? I'm having salad with a side of fries. Hi friend, welcome back to Salad for the Side of Fries. I'm Jen Trepik, your host, health and lifestyle coach here with you every week for wellness without the weirdness. Welcome back for volume four of the next frontier files. If you're just joining us, let me catch you up.
We are celebrating seven years of salad with a side of fries with seven episodes. One for each year, built around the last rapid fire question that I've asked every guest since the very beginning. In your opinion, what's the next frontier in wellness? You could go back and catch volumes one through three anytime. It is all good. You do not need them to join us today and listen in. You will be fine following along for this week, which is all about year four. So year four was August 2022 to August 2023. This is the year a robot of sorts showed up in everyone's pocket like the futuristic reality set in. And at the same time, a handful of guests look backward instead of forward to me, both things are true in this episode. So let's see which one convinces you before we get into it.
I want to tell you about the happy healthy hub members get a new recipe every week curated articles, extra discounts from me and our partners interview episodes in full video, including some behind the scenes pieces that you won't be able to see anywhere else. Year four opens the same way it does every August with salad with a side of fries marking its own birthday celebrating three years with the five fat factors was not an interview. Just Jen looking back at where the show has been and sharing five key elements that explain how we got here and what we can do. It's essentially an echo of exactly what this mini series is doing four years later at your seven 102 episodes in year four and somewhere in the middle of them a piece of software known as chat GPT or some version of AI start showing up in almost every answer to the next frontier question. David Greenwald is one of the first to say it out loud. They're going to continue to evolve aspects of genetics epigenetic neutral genomic. I think that we're going to be able to more clearly identify these true individual identifiers where things are going to be more suited to this particular type of nutrition and have it be for real not kind of the bogus testing that's out there now where if you do this and you're never supposed to eat this again or whatever.
But have it be real be genetic and have it be something that the evidence backs up I think we're going to be able to drill down more and more and more into those spaces and honestly I think with what AI is doing I don't know what's going to happen there but there's good and bad there but there's some amazing things that could possibly come out of artificial intelligence that can really probably advance us beyond what anybody can really describe. David can't quite finish the thought and I don't even think that's a flaw in his answer I think it reflects where many of us were at that time feeling the push and the pull of curiosity or excitement and trepidation at the same time David Greenwald wasn't the only one thinking about this six weeks earlier Jenner is an entire episode not an interview asking the question everyone was starting to ask in their own kitchens. Should artificial intelligence be your coach if the idea of AI is your coach feels abstract doctor Jesse Heymeyer talks about already living a small piece of it with a sensor on your arm feeding your data all day which happens back to your two's interview with doctor Casey means and a handful of other frontier answers over the years I believe more and more people are going to get access to personalized information and an understanding of how to use it.
That right and we see this with like the continuous glucose monitor CGMs I think more and more that is going to happen and I think it's such a great thing I can get super exciting. Dr. Jesse was describing the same hope as David Greenwald just with the device that you could already buy that had objective input instead of a large language model that frankly is still finding its footing. And then I think that's why the same year Ted Critt's honest join Jen on salad with the side of fries to talk wearables Apple watch fit bit the things already on your wrist ask him what's next and he reaches past the device itself. I have a feeling I don't know how but I have a feeling that virtual reality may play a role in that somehow not sure in what conceptually I can't quite put my finger on it but I feel like having done VR many times for gaming and stuff like that I think that it's going to be interesting to see if there's some way.
I think you can see that there are both either mental or even physical wellness if there's something about VR that can kind of I don't know plug into the brain for lack of a better term and see if that can change something or if VR might help them figure out how certain diseases work. I don't know I mean you can argue artificial in this kind of in there too so I think that goes part and parcel with it but yeah I think tech still has a very, very long way to go and helping us figure things out that way. Ted David Dr. Jesse three different guests all circling the same unfinished idea nobody could quite describe where AI would go everyone just agreed that it'll be headed somewhere that impacts our personal wellness not every guest this year wants to lean further into a screen. Daniaate spends our episode helping people get their homes in order and her frontier answer turns the camera around I think it's going to have to do with social media I honestly do I think to detaching from social media it's interesting to hear the parents at school talking about like delaying getting kids phones that's been kind of a big thing we talk a lot about digital health and just being really smart about being online and I think that really is kind of an impact on the world.
It's kind of an area that we need to explore because the dopamine like deficiency oh god it's such a thing and I felt it myself right like just scrolling doom scrolling going down that rabbit hole you know whether it's short form video or like reddit post or whatever like I think being able to take back control of our own attention is going to be really important. Here the robot of chat GPT shows up in the mainstream Deanna reminds us of the tension we've seen the impact of technology and social media and I appreciate that she reminded us to put our phones down and well I guess I'll just say keep that in mind because it's not the last time this AI conversation turns around on itself. If one half of year for belongs to the robot the other half belongs to something Jeff Children said back in year one and Jen herself had been saying to clients since long before salad with the side of fries existed back to basics to guess this year land on it from two different directions 36 episodes apart Glenn Livingston and Chad tacked I think the next frontier and wellness is getting back to basics there's a philosophical natural hygiene.
Which says ask any zookeeper what should a chimpanzee eat what should a zebra eat what should a gorilla eat and they'll tell you they're not going to give you this long fancy answer that you know they're 14 different diets where primates what do primates eat what are the primates who have the closest genetic makeup to us eat and there's not a lot of profit in it but that's what we should be doing that's probably the healthiest way we could eat a species specific diet. The next frontier and wellness I think it's realizing that the one that the diets don't work in that it's all about the balance and the infallume improvement system that really does work but I don't think it's just about the information I think it's also about the support the guidance and the accountability like if it was just information America wouldn't be getting fatter and fatter sense the advent of the internet Google the cell phone like we have so much information are our fingertips so I really think it's like the human contact and the guidance and the support and accountability. That's so important Glenn wanted us eating like the animals we are Chad suggested we lean on another human being instead of another app neither one explicitly mentioned the robot everybody else brought up in year four and I'm pretty sure that was non-accident.
One more voice belongs in this part of our year four conversation. Halle Brook thinks the missing piece was never information at all. Honestly I think it's prevention it's people understanding that food and nutrition and what you put in your body is a way better alternative than ending up in the doctor's office. Actually I'm going to change my answer health coaching I think that's the next frontier and I think that we're starting to see insurance companies higher health coaches and medical practices are hiring health coaches. But I think that's the frontier is health coaches because health coaches allow prevention to be the focus. I love Halle's response she talks herself into a different answer in real time and lands on the same idea that Chad attack it gave us a person not a program quick pivot here. Year four was where salad with the side of fries started asking whether more technology means more answers and a handful of guests. And a handful of guests landed on no it doesn't our health challenges are not for a lack of information and my book uncomplicated wellness ditch the rules quiet the noise reclaim your life comes from that same place it's not another app to check or another algorithm to trust or more rules to follow it strips away the noise so you can hear what's true for you and your body.
And I think that's the only way to get a robot required to learn more about the book see what readers have said and more text the word book B 0 okay to 8 3 3 8 0 1 0 5 0 0 again you'll text the word book B 0 OK to 8 3 3 8 0 1 0 5 0 0 This is the next frontier files a few more threads worth knowing before we get to your four's biggest moment mental health keeps building hormones start showing up more often and salad with the side of fries keep circling back to the gut even when the gut isn't the headline you'll hear this in three voices Dr. Margaret Rutherford Leah Brugamon and Tracy Pleschkoord it is incredibly exciting what's going on in depression research right now I mean we're looking at the gut and we're looking at the opioid system most people have long since left the idea is a chemical imbalance it's just not.
And the more holistically we think I think it's going to be in 20 years no telling what we're going to know that we don't know now it will really change treatment. I see a lot of things about blood sugar but I think it sells because like sensitizing your cells and like how are you utilizing hormones and nutrition at that level because they're saying oh your levels are normal but it's like why is this not working I think we might be head in there. I'm not a train in managing blood glucose it is the proxy for insulin think you know insulin resistance being at the heart for the core of you know metabolic dysfunction a lot of people don't adopt is managing your glucose I hope they start teaching that in health classes you know the ones because I think adopting that early on is absolutely not only going to like them lives improve longevity it's going to make a much more enjoyable life so I and I think it all was back to monitor your blood glucose and insulin.
Dr Margaret Leah and Tracy were three different guests from three different specialties and all landed on the same word cellular whatever we end up calling it in later years it started here. The God gets one more appearance this year with Jen's episode in October of 2022 with the second part of the two part series the down and dirty part two what your poop says about your health true to form it's Jen walking listeners through what their own bodies have been telling them all along and continuing to deliver on the importance of the God to frontier answers and your four deserve their own verdict starting with Nadine Artemis who names the frontier. And where we are in the progression of it peptides are pretty amazing and I wrote an article on I have many articles on oral care on our site but there's a newer one and we talk about the use of peptides sort of before surgery after surgery or just in general for oral care that frontier it already exists but it's so huge because we have about 70 peptides a peptides are all made from short chain amino acids and so there's about like 7,000 more to come.
And so that's just ridiculous. Here's the verdict on Nadine Artemis 70 peptides in year four barely registers as a frontier answer one guest one passing mention however by year six peptide therapy becomes a confident near consensus pick and by year seven guests are talking about peptides beyond LP one like it's the most obvious subject in the world was Nadine early by a little or a lot. Depends if you consider three years a long time or the blink of an eye the second verdict of this stretch belongs to Ellen Scanlon who is counting states instead of peptides expanding on CBD or cannabis conversations from years one and two of salad with the side of fries I think that one of the things the pandemic brought I hope is an understanding that everyone is really just trying to get through the day in the best way that they can. And more openness to understanding that people do that in different ways and that what works for you may not work for someone else in vice versa and when I started this business there were 11 legal states and now they're 21 so they're half a million cannabis jobs across the US more three times more than their
identity in the US people work in cannabis but I am hopeful that that frontier is here and will continue to be here. Here's the verdict on Ellen Scanlon she's on to something for a while cannabis normalization keeps building for another year two after this then it does something none of the other year for frontiers do it fades into the background it stops being mentioned at all this doesn't mean it failed it shows that it progressed into being normal normal things don't need a frontier answer now the biggest verdict of year four and maybe of the whole series so far to guess same year 26 episodes apart. Jordan side goes first the fitness industry runs on a pendulum of extremes this is good this is bad this is right this is wrong we see fads like any kids you grew up in the 90s will remember the low fat craze like now there's high fat craze and low car just like history often repeats itself right now body positivity is huge it's taking over many many aspects and I love the original intent behind body positivity but I think it's straight a little bit too far and I think what's going to happen is we're going to end up going back to the shredded six packs shredded stuff we're going to see that go too far again so it's going to go from being as big as like whatever like health and every size type stuff we're
going to go back probably not in the next two to three years but I think probably with you in the next five to seven years you'll see that Jordan named a hope Mulaney Roger shared in year one and a movement Sarah Mollouf celebrated in year two he was the first guest on salad with a side of fries to say loudly and clearly that it won't last the pendulum will swing back. Six months later Taylor Russell in an interview focused on a completely different topic gives salad with the side of fries listeners alive look at exactly what Jordan is describing we're already kind of moving into this body love body positivity and food freedom I think we're going to see more of this and just getting away from this whole culture and I would like to put in for that to continue the trajectory finding balance rather than being so on and off there are simple things that every one of us can do every single day even if we're eating pizza for dinner and like could
you still get out for a walk we're so far removed from that so I see more of that coming and really hope that that is the case. Taylor and Jordan weren't talking about the same things on their episodes hers was about adrenal fatigue his was about exercise and yet listening back Taylor was standing exactly where Jordan predicted we'd still be hoping that the pendulum holds a little longer at the place that he told us it wasn't going to stay. Here's the verdict on Jordan's side and Taylor wessel together this is the single most precise prediction and salad with the side of fries seven year history Jordan names a timeline five to seven years almost to the month in your seven a guest describes a culture so consumed by GLP one drugs an extreme thinness that she calls it dystopian food joy eliminated entirely that's Jordan's prediction and it lands almost exactly on schedule Taylor recorded the same year on the day.
Already standing at the hinge point hoping out loud that the version Jordan feared wouldn't come yet it did sometimes the most profound insights on salad with the side of fries comes not from guests who are most excited about the future but the guest who's concerns help them and us see it clearly. Living through year four it felt like everyone had one obsession artificial intelligence and everything else was the background noise now looking back on it though altogether that's not what happened yes the robot shows up and it changed the conversation David Greenwald our a i as your coach episode Dr. Jesse Heymeyer Ted's VR future they talked about the AI and with it there was also. Glenn and Chad who discussed the same basics that Jeff Chilton said in year one Halley reminded us to choose a person over program and underneath both of those threads Jordan side made the single sharpest prediction of any salad with the side of fries expert guest which really had nothing to do with AI year four was not solely about the robot at all it was the tension between what's new and exciting.
Versus the Trident true what we know to be fundamentally human and health supporting and before we wrap up completely we have one more thing I want to tell you about Friday's nutrition nugget on Friday and this week's bite size bonus episode we're talking about red a true tide this is the newest GLP one therapy which has three mechanisms of action and it's fitting for this week's episode because year four of salad with the side of fries.
