We do appreciate each and every one of you after every nuggets win and every nuggets loss
and the worst loss at home in the Nicole Eokitch era.
My name is Matt Moore.
I've been covering the nuggets for 14 seasons as a credential reporter.
You can catch me at the Denver Dig, hardwood, peroxism, fansighted, and the action network
as well as Locked On NBA daily.
On tonight's show, we will talk about that pile of vomit that was the Denver Nuggets
loss to the New York Knicks.
We will hit on some things and I'm going to, unfortunately, tell you some bad news about
the nuggets future.
We will also discuss the injury to Jamal Murray as well.
Oh boy, I apologize for the late podcast here because my daughter was having a
first-ever sleepover and she got home sick and was freaking out and she called me and
so I had to accept the stuff to do the show and then had to go pick her up.
So she had a fun night on Friday night, which is more than I could say for the nuggets
or their fans, as the nuggets lose 142 to 103 to the New York Knicks.
I am told, so Tony in the comments says, at least Yoke was great.
I do not understand this.
I will never understand it, but I accept that this is true.
That as long as Nikolai Yoke puts up numbers, that's what matters.
So Nikolai Yoke was 38 points, 14 to 21 shooting, 107 from three, eight rebounds, five
assists, two steals, three turnovers, a personal foul, and we will talk about the plus minus.
I don't have anything good to say about any of the other nuggets.
I don't have anything good to say.
There was nothing good.
It made his return three points, one of seven shooting, 0-3 from three.
Cam Johnson came back.
He got 10 points on four of seven shooting.
Most of it when the game was already out of reach.
Spencer Jones came back and was one of the worst players on the court tonight.
Fowlprone couldn't rebound all sorts of problems.
The nuggets were bad from three, eight of 40 for 20% from three point range.
They missed 15 straight threes.
That's not good.
Their defense was horrific.
They allowed the next to shoot 58% from the field and 47% from three.
They couldn't get stops either.
I'm nothing good to say about this game.
I'm nothing good to say about it.
Nothing.
There's nothing positive about this.
They start off great.
I've honestly gotten to the point I don't want them to get off the hot starts.
I want them to be down after the first four possessions and then come back and then
restore order.
They were leading and it was fine.
Then the bench minute came in and Adelman, I think because it was a back-to-backer.
They didn't want Val playing that many minutes elected to have Aaron Gordon in his first
game back, played the back up five.
That lineup got outrageously slaughtered.
Then KM came in and it got, or I'm sorry, I came, Val came in and it got worse.
It was just like an avalanche.
By the time the nugget starters got back in, it wasn't out of reach.
It was still like they could, but then the starters came back in and they just completely
fell apart too, as well as Jamal got hurt and the air went out of the building because
Jamal got hurt because it's like you finally got everybody healthy.
Then Jamal gets hurt.
We'll talk about Jamal.
Jamal's injury coming up in just a minute.
Second quarter, from 10-16 to 346 was a plus 15 run.
It was a 28-13 run from the Knicks in the second quarter.
In that period, two or four from three, the nugget's went 0-3, they went 7-8 on two
pointers in that stretch.
They got six points out of turnovers, the nugget's got none.
There was nothing about it, and then at that point, after the starters got worked to close
their stint, that's when it was really over because the Knicks closed on a 8-1 run to end
the second quarter from the 223 mark.
It was the starters, they were on the floor, that is the thing that happened.
They got killed, they got destroyed, they got annihilated.
They had had the year that I expected them to have and that they honestly probably could
have had and probably would have had.
I would say flush this one, but you can't, and I said they were going to go six and one
in the stretch.
This is the ones.
We'll see.
I would have given them a pass on this one if they had strung together any stuff with
throughout the season.
I get that it's a back-to-back, but it's a home-back-to-back.
The Knicks are an altitude.
The home-back-to-back in your season has been so fraught and you finally got back so
many guys and you just completely got annihilated.
This Knicks, I will say this Knicks team is a really bad match-up and we'll get to this
in a little bit about some of the realities of the Knicks match-ups with the Eastern
Conference teams.
I'm not surprised that they lost and I'm not surprised that they got blown out, but
one of the things that I've said pretty consistently is I haven't felt like this team
quit much this year and I don't feel like this team had terrible effort.
I feel like most nights, even when they've lost, it's been like they were prepared and
they wanted to win and they were ready to play.
I haven't felt as much as there has been honestly, this has been the fewest times this
season where I felt like they just haven't tried of any season in the Kullis tenure.
And tonight happened and it came at a really bad time because this was a game that you
really needed to win.
You win the night and you win three in a row, you'd snuck out the jazz game, you won a
clutch game versus the Lakers, talked about could potentially be a moment and then you
build on that with the back-to-back win versus a Knicks team that has had your number and
you reset everything and there's so much momentum going into the end and into Oklahoma City.
If you use the scam Johnson thing, I'm blocking you just like as I heads up, like I'm just
going to do it every single time and it's not about Cam, it's about I don't like bad
nicknames and that's a terrible nickname, be more inventive.
And they just, you know, they didn't have this one and just watched as this one got away
from them and they got beat and then they just knew that they were beat and it's a real
problem.
And everyone's got comments about what it is, whether it's Alman, which is where a lot
of people blame or the roster, quote, not fitting, which I don't really understand, the roster
fits really well.
There's a lot of conversations about the nugget's not being mentally tough enough, which that's
an old chestnut that takes me back to 2020 and we said that about that team.
But they got destroyed.
They got absolutely destroyed tonight and Yoke has put up a lot of really good numbers
and honestly looked great in his individual game.
The offense, the ball is not pop in, the offense is not moving, nothing, and like there
was nothing redeeming about their performance.
They did not leverage the nicks, they did not force the nicks and their defense was so
atrocious, it was so bad.
It was so bad on so many levels, closeouts, game plan, discipline and like some of it was
like the nicks are hitting these shots that are contested, but they're contested because
the guys are afraid of closing out and getting blown by because they don't have any help
behind them.
It's just like there's, it was all broken tonight.
It was a wretched game and it was so bad that you want to flush it, but you can't because
they put themselves in this position or the injuries put themselves in position or
whatever.
Here we are where they needed to not have a game like this and they have a game like
this and this is like how this is where it feels like it's just not their year.
This is where I get people saying that because that's where I feel like this goes is
like the one, whenever it's the one thing you can't do, that's, that's what happens
this year.
Oh, the one thing you can't have is like them losing Aaron Gordon.
Oh, well, the one thing you can't have is Nikola going down.
Oh, you've managed that.
The one thing you can't have is Aaron going down again, oh, the one thing you can't have
is brewing in the chemistry.
So these guys don't know how to play their, oh, the one thing you can't have is a poor
effort on them back to back versus an Eastern conference contender that's had your number.
Like every single time, man, like no matter what, and it's not that I, this team actually
hasn't been infuriating.
That's one of the things I think that's the reason I feel differently about this team.
The nuggets fans who have said like this team is broken and this is just like last year
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, like to me, I haven't felt like it was super frustrating
where it's like, why aren't you guys better?
It's just been like one thing after another.
And until tonight, when tonight was like, you should not have had this happen to you.
Like this is your moment to actually push and surge and you got the emotional boost
from Aaron coming back.
And you should have like absolutely competed in this game, even at like the problem with
the Jamal injury is like, they were losing before Jamal got hurt.
Like they were getting, they were, they lost this game before Jamal got hurt and they just
were like, okay, all right, I guess, I guess, I guess, I guess, I guess, I guess, I guess
and that's a bummer.
That's just really disappointing.
And I want to be forgiving, I, I want to be forgiving and I want to be like, I know
how good this team can be and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah and it's just like,
they push the fans and everyone in their season and themselves so far.
And again, it's not that I don't understand that the injuries put them here.
It's just like, that's, look, that's the, that is the straw that you drew.
That is the card you were given.
That is the lot that you drew.
That's it.
Like this has been, this is your season.
You don't get to have another season.
You don't get to have a perfect season.
You don't get to have the season where everything went right.
Like this is what it gave you.
This is what fate and life gave you and what you make of it as a basketball team is what
you make of it and they have not made enough of it.
And that's brutal.
Jamal Murray gets injured.
He steps backwards.
He falls backwards in a Colioca's foot and sprains his ankle.
He was really, he was down and looks really bad.
He hobbled off the court.
He was like walking up and down the tunnel on his own power after that injury.
He did not return.
There's no update post game.
I am not going to like panic about this just because everyone, I don't, I get it because
of what's happened this year, but it's like this wasn't a hamstring string.
He didn't pull something.
He didn't strain something.
He didn't sprain it.
It wasn't a spring knee.
He didn't tweak something like that.
It's just an ankle.
This happens to basketball players all the time.
If it's a high ankle sprain, they're screwed.
If it's a, if they say tomorrow it's a high ankle sprain, he's going to miss the rest of
the regular season.
If he's going to miss eight weeks, not back to the second round.
Yeah.
They're probably done.
We thought they were not going to win a game without yokas.
That's what everyone told me is they weren't going to win a game when the yokas went down.
They went 10 and 6.
They would still win games and they would still find their way and I will tell you I will
maintain.
You're going to have to show me that they're in seventh place for me to believe that they're
in the play.
I'm just not going to believe it.
I know the type raker situations.
I know Phoenix is scheduled.
I know Denver schedule.
You're going to have to show it to me.
But can they be six?
Yeah.
Do they get out of the playoffs with a six seed?
Probably not.
Like, do they get to the conference finals with a six seed?
Probably not.
Uh, I'm not too worried about Jamal.
He's been, he has always been really good about coming back from ankle injuries.
He doesn't have like the ones that are really, really, really tired.
So 715 saying Clare said three years of the tired excuses are wearing thin.
So here's the problem with this.
This is not exclusive to you.
This is not that people are like, oh, the nuggets are tired every ever.
If you go listen to the other locked on shows, go listen.
Whenever the teams have these go listen to when teams lose on the back to back and what
their hosts say, and they will say more often than not, yeah, the guys were just gassed.
They were tired.
They didn't have it.
This is why I've been on such a crusade to get rid of these stupid games that ruin what
could be really great games in the regular season is because of how messed up having
talk to players.
I know how much it messes with you.
You do not get the best version of athletes when you put them in this position.
You don't.
This wasn't the best version of the nuggets versus the best version of the next.
It wasn't.
It should be, but it wasn't that's problem.
I don't expect Jamal.
If you're asking me like how long I think he's going to be out, I haven't talked to
me anybody in the front office.
I haven't talked to my coaching staff.
I haven't talked to anybody.
I would say like no crutches from via Brendan Boat of DMVR.
I would say like max 10 days, maybe a week.
I'm just not too worried about it, but they may come out tomorrow and be like yeah, it's
a high ankle spring.
Then which case like well, okay, they're probably screwed, that's it.
Okay, coming up, I have some bad news about the nuggets outlook and where I've kind of
gotten to.

Back here on locked on nuggets here on a Saturday morning recording this late at night on Friday
night no game until Monday the nuggets have two days off to get rested before the Oklahoma
city.
If you are listening and you're just like what they lost it was just a bad loss while
if you're wondering why it sounds so bad while the comments are just crashing out as they
have versus pretty much every loss of season.
I don't remember a single loss where the comments section did not completely crash out.
It's just been a crash out season every single loss if they do not win it's a crash out
sometimes when they win it's a crash out.
So here's the number here's what I want to want to tell you is that where I'm at after
the night.
It was the back to back blah blah blah.
Jamal got hurt to thing.
Here's the problem.
The number of nuggets this season versus top four seasons in the NBA are seven and 10.
They are seven and 10.
They have only lost those games by an average of minus 0.2 points, which is very good.
That's actually pretty good.
These are good teams.
You're supposed to lose the good teams.
Very few teams beat all the good teams.
Very few teams were over 500 versus daily teams.
They are 3 and 1 versus the Minnesota Timberwolves.
They are 2 and 1 versus the Houston Rockets.
They are 2 and 1 versus the Boston Celtics.
They are 0 and 1 versus the Spurs with another match up on Wednesday.
They are 0 and 2 versus the Cavaliers and lost badly in those games.
I guess the first one was actually not that bad.
They are 0 and 2 versus the pistons.
The pistons smashed them.
They are 0 and 2 versus the Thunder and they are 0 and 1 versus the Nix.
The problem here is that the nuggets, the nuggets are not just looking to win the Western
Conference.
They want to win the title.
I do think most fans, I think, would be happy if they made the finals and lost.
It would be like, that's a bummer.
But they made the finals.
That would be, I think, a win.
All things considered.
But it's very unlikely that they actually do win the finals because they get there.
They are almost definitely going to face a team that has match up advantages.
I have not liked the match up versus the Cavaliers the last two seasons.
I have not liked the match up versus the Nix the last two seasons.
Detroit, I think, is a little more doable.
If Detroit gets there, I feel like, OK, you might be able to do that.
And Boston, I think, they match up with, well.
What this kind of says is, can the nuggets make it out of the first round?
Yes.
I think that when people start acting like they're going to miss the playoffs, stop it.
When they're like, oh, this is a first round out.
I don't know about that.
I don't think so.
I just don't.
I personally don't think so.
They're likely to be either, like, they're more likely right now to be five or six than three or four, but they also could be three or four.
And if it's Minnesota, you can't ignore that they're three and one versus that team.
And they have shown that they can beat them.
That last game, I think, was a product of a lot of things happening all at once.
I think they match up OK with Minnesota now that they have shooting.
They match up well with Houston.
I'm not worried about that one.
I've been worried about San Antonio for much all season.
That's the one that really scares me.
So that be a two seven, though, which is unlikely.
They match up well, they they can handle the Lakers.
I think that the other night proved that.
And.
That's it.
So it's going to be rocket.
It's going to be rockets or Lakers is the most likely first round opponent for the ever nuggets.
It's very it's almost definitely going to be one of those two, right?
It's going to be rockets, wolves or Lakers, but it's more likely to be rockets or Lakers than wolves.
They'll probably win their first round series.
But given their struggles and their inability to show a fastball versus any of these teams,
one of the real problems is just like.
They have not been able to they and again, I don't know how to I don't know how to remove the injuries from the skies because it's like.
To show your best basketball, you do have to have your guys.
You don't have to have all of them, but you do have to have a majority.
And they haven't had that ability to show that in any of these games.
They got an opportunity tonight and the next wiped the floor with them.
And then Jamal got hurt.
If you would ask me like, are the nuggets probably winning the title at any point this season, even in preseason?
I've been like, no, they're probably not winning the title because this is more like how much championship equity do you have?
And like the thunder right now, like I have the thunder at like a 38% chance to win the title.
That's as high as they get is 38%. That's it.
And that's commiserate with the odds that you will find in any sports book.
So no one's got like a majority share.
Nobody has more than 50%. Nobody's likely.
Nobody is more likely to win the title than not.
And anybody that thinks that is just like basically off a narrative.
The problem is just, I can't get to a place when we look at these matchups round over, round over, round over, round.
I can't get to a spot where I'm like, yeah, they are likely to win those matchups.
It's like, can they beat Minnesota?
Yeah, they can, but they, you know, they might lose.
It's like, it's like 60.
It's somewhere between 55, 45 and 60, 60, 40.
You know, Lakers is probably between 60 and 65%.
Rockets is probably closer to like 55 to 60.
And when you start compounding those, can you do it once?
Yeah, can you do it twice?
Well, it gets harder to do both of those things.
And that's before you face Santoni or Houston or Santoni or OKC.
And those teams are way better.
And the nuggets have not been able to show that they actually can beat the elite teams.
And I just think it's, I don't think that they have it.
I don't think it's a roster problem.
I really don't.
I think they have a lot of really good players.
By the way, I have a new hat, which I'm very proud of.
I got this last night at ball arena.
They sold out of this one.
I'm Mitchell and Ness.
If you're not watching it, if you're on the podcast version,
I got a beanie that's got the old, the ABA minor logo on it.
And I'm very excited about it.
Was tonight a bad spot, not a bad enough one.
It was a back-to-back, but they're at home.
It's a home home back-to-back that mitigates the worst part of it, which is the travel.
So a lot of comments about Adelman.
And the only thing that I will continue to say is this.
Anybody that wanted Michael Malone fired last year
doesn't get to criticize David Adelman.
You just don't, because this is the exact opposite of Malone.
It's a guy that has a long view of the season that is trying different rotations,
that is trying to keep minutes down despite all of the injuries
that is trying to have a wider view of what they need to accomplish
that isn't going for it every single night.
All the stuff that you get frustrated with in terms of the intensity of these games
or the ferociousness and all that kind of stuff,
that's all, like, that is, a lot of it is, like, Malone was great at that.
And Adelman is purposefully different.
Someone says that the faint hope is to get into the lottery.
You're not getting into the lottery. It's not going to happen.
And I just want to say, like, draft one of the apparently amazing top prospects.
The 18-year-old isn't going to save you.
He's not going to be ready to compete until Yoke is just done.
Yoke will be 35 by the time that that player is ready to compete for a championship.
Young guys are never ready to compete.
Nicholas says not fair to Joseph's team until the playoffs,
but his fans is disappointing when the players seem content with being second roundouts.
You know what I've really thought about is I think that teams,
I think this is not just the nuggets, I think a lot of teams.
I think a lot of teams struggle against how to manage the regular season,
but still play tough enough.
Because one of the things I was thinking about on the way home from picking up my daughter
was I had hoped this team could be the spurs.
I never thought this was going to be a warrior's dynasty.
The night they won the championship and there was talk about that,
I was like, let's just enjoy the moment.
This is really important.
You want a championship.
This is your first title.
Just be here for right now.
And the part that was because I just don't think I just don't think anything is certain.
And it's obviously not.
But my hope was that they could be a little bit like the spurs.
And that was Calvin's kind of hope, too, was that they could be maybe they'll win every year.
But maybe they win three or five, right?
And the problem I have is looking back.
Those spurs teams routinely and consistently won between 55 and 65 games.
And it was like 55, 57, 62, 52, 60, 54, 63.
Like they would routinely pop into the 60s.
And the nuggets just do not have that kind of depth roster for sustainability.
And a lot of that is as simple as.
Manage a nobly Tony Parker later years, Boris D.
How they brought in enough talent where and their system was so good.
And I think the league was in a place to that's part of it.
That they were able to just kind of roll out these wins.
And the nuggets have not been able to manage the regular season.
They just haven't they haven't been able to manage it.
So.
If they're not going to have that floor.
It just means that every year you're hoping for the one shot.
And you're hoping for every year to be like 2023 when everything went right.
And it's just that's not how it's going to be.
There's a lot of times when champions win the title when things didn't go right.
The 2011 Mavericks not everything went right for them.
The 2012 heat most everything went right for them, but not everything.
They weren't.
They they were dominant.
They were they were really great team.
2013 heat most everything went right for them.
2014 spurs they just lost the title or just lost the finals.
And they had all sorts of things going on with them and they, you know, they won.
2015 warriors most everything went right for them.
2016 warriors.
They missed most of them when the title Cavaliers were actually not very good in 2016.
They just weren't very good.
Like go back and like look at the record in the games like they were not very good.
2017 warriors everything mostly went right 2018.
That team was a mess.
I team hated each other, but they were just more talented.
2019 warriors everything or Raptors most everything went right.
2020 Lakers.
Well.
The bubble.
There have been teams that things haven't gone right and they still want it.
2022 warriors like Steph missed like two months.
Trayquan more and as says if we lose this year, everyone has to go like when.
Like you're just not going to you're not going to get rid of everybody if you lose in the second round.
You're just not.
You're just not like that's not going to happen.
I don't know what to tell you guys you guys have unrealistic expectations if that's what you think should happen.
Um.
There's a kind of conversation going on about the Yoke is his defense and people mentioning like then talking about the wrist.
The wrist has nothing to do with defense.
For what it's worth.
I don't blame Nicola tonight.
Nicola gave really great effort on offense.
I didn't.
There were stuff that really bothered me about his effort defensively.
Stuff like where he was at the level.
But look everybody was horrible.
I'm not going to say here in single out Nicola.
The problem was not Nicola Yoke is tonight.
It just wasn't.
The solution wasn't Nicola Yoke.
And I do think that's something that I kind of want to stress here.
When I talk about how much I don't want to hear about the stats after the games like this.
The reason is.
Nicola had 38 eight and five.
That wasn't the answer tonight.
That wasn't what they needed.
That wasn't the solution.
And if you want to say like yeah, but what else is Nicola supposed to do?
He tried to carry them.
That's fair.
I'm not going to argue with that.
Yeah.
I don't think that tonight was on a co-blur.
I don't think it was on Adelman.
I don't think I was.
I'm sorry.
Adelman lived into a postgame.
He hasn't this year.
He was really weak.
That was her.
He knew it.
had that problem this year. So as much as it's like, he played four guards. Guys, they got killed
tonight. It does not matter. He could have played Ziknaji 70 minutes tonight. It would not have made a
difference. The collective effort was horrific tonight. That's a problem.
The Nuggets do look like a second round out. And what's frustrating to me most about that is that it
does. This is that that's about what we thought they were last year. And so as much as I've tried
to say, this isn't like last year because I don't think it is. Like being around the team, I can
just tell you, like, this is not feel, it still does not feel at all like last year. It feels
different and better. But the results are what they are. I don't think they can be the Oklahoma
City Thunder. I don't think they can be the Spurs. I don't think they can be the Knicks. I don't
think they can be the Cavaliers. They need to be Boston and Detroit. But I don't know if I can't
say that I'm confident they can win two rounds. Because they're going to play play either Oklahoma City
or San Antonio. Now, maybe they get lucky and like someone knocks out one of those teams early.
There's a huge upset and I open the door. But that's where I'm at. Okay. That's going to do it.
The lockdown nuggets. This is a bummer episode. It's a bummer of a game. We'll be back on Sunday
