The Richard Sherman Podcast - 49ers-Rams REACTION: SF Defense MAN-HANDLES Los Angeles While Purdy & the offense cooks in Australia
About this episode
Richard Sherman and Mitchell react to the San Francisco 49ers’ dominant 27–7 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Australia. The 49ers answered major questions in Week 1. Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw returned and changed San Francisco’s defense, while the secondary—including Renardo Green, Deommodore Lenoir, Jack Jones, Ji’Ayir Brown, and Siga—made life difficult for Matthew Stafford and the Rams’ loaded offense. Brock Purdy looked sharp, protected the football, used his legs when needed, and operated Kyle Shanahan’s offense confidently. Richard breaks down Purdy’s improved footwork, the offensive line's zero sacks, Mike Evans’ impact as a third-down weapon, Deebo Samuel’s return, and rookie RB Kaelon Black’s emergence behind Christian McCaffrey. Sherman explains why the Rams’ star-studded roster shouldn’t have been crowned before Week 1—and why travel, jet lag, scheme fit, and execution mattered in a lopsided Niners win.

All you new fans, make sure you hit that like and subscribe button. Please, the 49ers went down under and manhandled the Rams. Mitchell, the defense, the question mark all off season, answered a lot of questions this game. I mean, they looked like an entirely different unit. And of course they did because you got Fred Warner back, you got Drake Greenlaw back. Mitchell, that's the entire attitude and demeanor of this team.
You talking about it just changed. You can see people turning down hits out there when you see Fred Warner and Drake Greenlaw, heat seeking missiles. Seagal was out there, three six was out there, heat seeking missiles, jayier Brown, putting hits on guys all day. The Amador, the Lunar, Ronaldo Greenplay, the really great game hat, the interception early on. And then even Jack Jones, Jack Jones almost had him two books. Jack Jones ran a few routes for receivers, looked really great out there. The defensive line, big question mark. What were they going to look like? Biggy Zua, looked like the same guy he was in Dallas, very impactful. You're not necessarily sitting on the stat sheet, you're not seeing all these sacks, but Stafford was under the rest the entire game. There were so many new guys, young guys stepping up, making the impact. I know Ramello Hyde, everybody was wondering how he was impacting the young guy. He's going to figure it out. Grayson Houghton did a great job.
Gray West, a lot of guys played a lot of great football, but Fred Warner, so great to see him back out there. He looked like he never left, but it was, it's just an entire different defense when Dre Greenlaw and Fred come together. I mean, it's like, it's like Thanos when he has all the stones, Mitchell in the glove. It's just a different feel. It's a different defense, especially, I mean, obviously Nicholas John Bolson, there was a lot of question mark. Is he healthy? People saw a video? Was he limpin? Was he not limpin? I don't think he was throwing people out the club in this game. Again, a couple TFLs in the game. Did he have some, you know, everybody has a little rust, but on the opposite side, Mitchell, I was worried about the interior offensive line for the San Francisco 49ers. And what a game they played. What a game they played. Was it perfect? No, but Kyle Shanahan drew it up and kept the defense off balance with the screen game, with the run game, with quick passes,
brought her to getting the ball out of his hands. When they did get some penetration, when they did get some pressure, he uses legs. He had 30 yards rushing and he looked incredible. Mitchell, he talked about you heard it throughout the broadcast about his footwork and how he worked on it all season and just getting back to how he was his rick year and just being sharper, sharper than he was last year. And boy, did he look sharp? And when he was in trouble and it was third down, everybody missing. We knew you would miss third and jaw one, you know, we ain't gonna forget you third and jaw one, but my Gavin's, when you have a true number one, when you have a big dog, big dogs eat first, Mitchell, and when you need one, he's gonna be there to give you one. And he did that in depot, Samuel. He came home. He came home. San Francisco's favorite son has returned. He put the one nine on Mitchell, got back in a little shake. He just looks more grateful. He looks happy to be here. He looks like he saw what the other side looked like and he felt better at home. And Mitchell, oh, he just, when somebody's out there playing, and you can see the joy, you can see the appreciation, you can see he looks reenergized.
And I think he's gonna have a great season. Mitchell, he just looks like the guy that he was when he first got there. And I love to see that he, he was in the backfield. He had a 12 yard run. He's so, he's so willing to help. He's so being so such a selfless player right now. He's kick returning. Mitchell, he had a big time kick returning this game to get the energy back in San Francisco. Well, I never really left San Francisco side. I think the fans, the Rams, don't think it avoid a home game, but they didn't. He had six catches for 48 yards, a touchdown receiving. Yeah, I mean, Brock, party, Brock, party in Dibo Samuel connection is gonna continue to grow. It's gonna continue to be great. It just, it just looks right. Dibo Samuel, Dre Greenlaw back Mike Evans now in the fold. Those guys look like they had unfinished business. I think Dre Greenlaw, like he's already said it a few times. He was like, man, in Denver, I was just was a different guy. Just what didn't feel right. I was watching 49ers game. My kids were talking about the 49ers.
And now you home Dibo. He was out there trying to make it work. But then you came home and they just look right. They went back to their old numbers. And then special teams, the special teams. You got a kicker 56 yard. I know he missed one the night. Still don't really know what happened. You know, it may have been that Australian air just might have pushed it a little bit, but Eddie D'Anero hit some big kicks in this game. I know he missed one. I know it wasn't perfect, but he's still money. And I think he's gonna have another great season. I think this, this is a stepping stone for him. His 49ers team is going to be a tough out for everybody. I still feel like the Seattle Seahawks are the class of the National Football League. And, but boy, if the offensive line, they kept Brock party clean today gave up no sex. They gave up 27 sacks in 2025. They gave up no sacks today. They barely gave up a few pressures. If they can play like this all season and keep Brock party clean and let him dissect Mitchell, like he went to mad school. Why tell you, but the real story of this game, Mitchell was the third down defense and the third down offense. I know Kyle Shanahan when he gets in that meeting on Monday. That's what he's going to talk about. He's going to talk about how do we do on third down. Mitchell, they were seven for 12. How do we do stopping the Rams on third down held on two of nine. The MVP of the league.
Mitchell, one of the best offences in the National Football League with the best play call one of the best play callers in the National Football League. Two of nine, one of three in the red zone. Well, they only had 15 first downs in the game. Mitchell, you play defense like that. You ain't going to have Raheem Morris below. Hi, this is highly breakman, Angela Jaretana, Jeremy Colhane, Patrick McDonald, and we're the hosts of the artists on artists on artists on artists podcast. Have you guys done Terry Gross's peloton class? No, I've been dying to. I'm so sorry. I'm seeing a reading of Sudako in the thousand paper cranes by Audrement Donald at the Wonderland bookstore. Our town is small taters by most standards, right? But to the people who grew up here, it's everything. What happens when a quiet Tennessee town becomes the front line in a battle over the future? Of America developers with right wing ties have purchased hundreds of acres of land in the area. The first thing you see when it pops up is high nears and apple etch. But they weren't just planning houses. We need cities on a shining hill that exemplify and embody the Christian way of life. Stop right there. Is that normal? A podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment.

Mike Evans, unfortunate news about the Sean Strypling.
We're gonna wait to hear that news. But Kale on black looked great. A rookie went out there, made an impact. CMC, Demarcus Robinson, what a touchdown. What a touchdown to open this game. They made the Rams who were the paper champions who were supposed to they were in the broadcast talking about how undefeated season in and we're almost everybody picked him to win this game. Like it wasn't going to be close and I told people I don't know. I don't have the Rams winning this game. I said it before I said it early in the season. I don't even once you got Aaron Donald said he's coming back. And you got miles get I said, I don't got them winning this game because Kyle Shanahan has Sean McVase number and Rams fans say, Oh, you're just a hater. You just a hater. Do I look like a hater now? Who looks right? I'm right. Ball, no, I know ball. You don't travel to Australia today before the game and think you're just going to beat a team not in the national football league.
That's crazy to do. That's insane to do. And now get that back to him. No question about it. These are humans. These are humans. You were on the plane. Twenty twenty nine hours ago, 28 hours ago. You were on a 15 hour flight. Their body by the time they body adjust Mitchell, they're going to be Thursday of next week. Like I don't understand that decision making, but it was it was a test. It was an experiment. Everybody wondered how it would go, but rational people kind of knew how it would go. We knew the team that got there the day before would probably have some jet lag. Even if they won, like you would see some moments in the game where they were sluggish. There was moments in this game where where Miles Garrett looks sluggish. Where he didn't look like he had his legs under him. It was so many things. I mean Matthew Stafford was a little off in this game. He wasn't as sharp as he usually is. And when you're playing in offense with the with the 2025 receiving touchdown leader and Devonte Adams,
the 2025 most valuable player in the national football league. You expect him to put more up more than seven points against the defense. What question marks? Give Raheem Morris a ton of credit for what he was able to do because that was outstanding. Richard, I was letting you go fire away. Man, I can tell you're excited. Huge one for the Niners. You did have some question marks coming into this game. You already touched on the offensive line. You marked that interior offensive line as a concern. Obviously they showed up today with no sacks, but the other side of the ball. You had questions outside of the Amador, Lenore. What was the rest of that secondary specifically a corner back in a look like and they impressed. Obviously that front seven was getting after Matthew Stafford making him very uncomfortable. But what did you think of Bernardo Green's game and Jack Jones game and some of those other complimentary pieces next to the Amador, Lenore? I thought they played outstanding football. They met the moment they dominated the moment and they played in the absence of fear.
I thought, Renardo's interception. It looked like it was covered too. I got to see the tape, but he sunk. He was deep. That was literally there was a play last year against the Seattle Seahawks were where they were in Seattle. They do a seven cut over Renardo Green and I remember Kyle Shanahan brought him to the pool to him out of the game and really cursed him. And then to see this season to start the season for him to sink right where he's supposed to be to get the depth that he's supposed to get. Make an interception first game of the season playing extremely confident. Jack Jones plays. I've never seen anybody play like Jack Jones. I mean, there are some great corners and he played, you know, it's feast or famine. But when he's on and he's down in and he's right. Boy, he's tough to complete passes on and he's fearless. It like a corner with nothing to lose that always feels like he's playing on house money. It's fun to watch. It's fun. It's fun to watch him. He's running routes for guys. Obviously he studied and prepared for this game. Diomedoer, LaNore was was really blanket coverage all night. I they gave him a illegal contact penalty that, you know, I thought was trivial.
I thought that Renardo Green penalty. I you know, those are the the refs are still its first game for them to but I thought this secondary play great. I thought Segal, who was second in tackles in this game was literally, I mean, making impact plays and you're it's not always it's not always on the stat sheets. It's not always big, big plays, but he was making his presence felt every time regardless of what the score was in the game. When he came down, he hit and he delivered weight and authority behind it every single time. And Jair Brown did too. And it was it was cool to watch sports brings neighborhoods together and one of my game day rituals is hitting Grand Central bakery in Seattle before kickoff. They use square and it just makes everything feel more put together quick checkout easy receipts even loyalty points sometimes the place can be packed but paying is seamless. That's sqa r e dot com for slash go for slash Sherman run your business smarter with square get started today. There's no question about that and you already touched on it the addition of Mike Evans to this offense totally changes things form it gives Brock party a reliable bonafide third down option to give the ball to and he was targeting them all game, especially early on in that game. It's amazing to see what one player does to an offense but the 49ers in their faithful got to be extremely excited to have him on their team and then behind christian McCaffrey they take a flyer on calen black out Indiana.
Here's a kid that had a very successful campaign with Indiana Hoosiers last year help take them to the championship game and ultimately ultimately the win the national championship he comes in behind christian McCaffrey his backup and you know a lot of question marks lie there. You know what happens to cmc he had 460 touches last year. Black out touched McCaffrey this game 14 to 10 and carries and he did a great job 14 for 65 to have a reliable secondary piece in that backfield is huge for the 49ers. But let's talk a little bit about the Rams I mean there was so much hype and hoopla about this team miles Garrett Aaron and Donald obviously McDuffie Jalen Watson the list goes on all these changes they made defensively and Kyle Shanahan picks them apart as you said. Kyle's got their number there is no question about that but how does this temper the expectations of this ramps team beyond week one do you think they are still.
I think they were a lot of criticism about it. I got a lot of criticism from people saying why don't you have the Rams they're the best team in football history never going to beat beat they scored seven points and gave up 27 stop it then this is the national football league you can't. It's not just easy to put all day we're going to add 3 4 all pro players and it's just going to work out is this isn't a sandwich Mitchell you can't just put great ingredients together and think it's going to taste good it doesn't always taste right Mitchell it doesn't always come out right by the time November December. When you're coming around then they may come together like they're supposed to but again Watson and McDuffie played in an entirely different scheme in Kansas City what spags runs isn't what Chris Shula runs and it's different like your opportunities are different the past rush is different the responsibilities are different they're not used to kind of sitting back and feeling it out and trying to pick their spots like Chris I'm sure when when they are going to be in the game.
They talked about Mike Evans covering Mike Evans in a red zone they were like hey we got we got Watson he's going to oh he's tall he's Lanky great man in the corner like it's going to be perfect but then you get to game day and everything that you thought changes Mike Evans takes it off his scope in the end zone in flexes like you got to put it on the grass like you got to see it all come together and maybe it does but I hate when people annoying teams before you play in any sport like just like the Dodgers in baseball they're like oh man they got every picture and every everything you just give them the rings like yeah when they win it you know because the other guys are professionals the other guys are motivated in a San Francisco 49ers are coached by Kyle Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan is a fantastic coach and if a few plays here in there he would be one of the best coach all time because he would have a couple Super Bowl wins but unfortunately things didn't pan out that way but he's still a hell of a coach in a national football league and he's a tough out and if he has his best players healthy if he has his quarterback healthy his receiving options and he's losing them by the second he's going to be tough to beat and they drove right down the field on the first drive of the game had no problem driving it right down the field they only got a field goal but they were at like the two yard line and kicked the field go from the two so it they didn't feel and
intimidated they didn't feel scared I don't think they felt like when they got the corners and made all these moves I don't think the 49ers San Francisco 49ers felt like they got that much better and when people say it it sounds crazy because McDuffy is a is a bona fide all pro it's a legitimate Watson is a really good corner like Miles Garrett is Miles Garrett but this is the national football league they're human beings everybody's been beat everybody's been blocked Miles Garrett is is a little banged up right now still got to get in the game shape but didn't get a QB pressure didn't get a QB hit so again it has to you have to remember this game is played on grass now will the Rams be formidable will the Rams be a contender no question about it they're too good of a team they're led by the MVP of the league they're going to be fine but when everybody on the on the broadcast is sitting there like man they may go undefeated this season that undefeated season didn't last a week settle down Richard I should have done this earlier but when a team dominates like the 49ers did today it calls for an old hat fashion hat switch and 49er faithful aware it with pride tonight much respect Richard but before we go I got one final question to ask you you're awfully excited tonight are you more excited about this 49ers win tonight or the fact that the Richard Sherman
