The world baseball classic has completely taken over baseball over the last.
Oh, I'd say mostly two weeks.
I'm not going to say that it took over baseball in the opening round of pool play.
Yes, it was important when Team USA was playing Italy's made a name for itself.
Venezuela, Japan, the DR.
There were fantastic games early on, but I would say over the last two weeks.
And maybe you feel differently, but everything that's been happening in Arizona and Florida
and spring training has become such an afterthought.
Like yes, games are still happening.
There are storylines coming out of camp, but the world baseball classic has taken over
everything in baseball.
And that's the best possible outcome for what this tournament, this event is truly about.
You only get it once every three years.
And the teams are always different.
So I've seen the debate before of why not bring it every single year.
Sometimes when you have an event that's every single year,
it takes away some of the power or the aura behind it, right?
At the world baseball classic was every single year, you wouldn't have the buildup
like you've had going into this year and assembling the roster.
And who's going to be joining the team?
We got two of the most talented teams ever put on a baseball field last night.
And it was a thrilling one run game that had massive solo home runs, elite pitching,
guys escaping jams.
And no, just in the way it would be in Hollywood, two outs, bottom of the ninth,
one run game, tying runs 90 feet away.
Controversial call and not even really controversial, it was not a strike.
But I would say that did it impact everything in the game?
It impacted that moment, but there were multiple opportunities throughout the game
where the Dominican Republic didn't cash in, didn't score
when they had prime scoring opportunities.
And that was something they were elite at in the first couple of games of the world baseball classic.
But I think if it was on the flip side, I would feel differently this morning
if the US got hosed on a call and the DR would be playing for a championship tomorrow night
against either Italy or Venezuela.
It has been about as good as you could ask for.
The atmospheres, the players, the bat flips, going out of the dugout,
you will not find a better atmosphere this season.
And I can promise you this, you will not find a better atmosphere in baseball
than what we saw last night.
You will never see this season at atmospheres good as what it was.
And the talent that was on display, let's be honest, you won't see that either.
You had two unbelievable rosters and there were royals players on both rosters.
And that's the theme of this first segment.
This has been such a massive win for the royals
because it has put their players either long time players or up and coming stars
on the global stage.
And guys like Michael Garcia, guys like Vinnie Pasquantino and Jack Caglione and Bobby Wittgen
are the young core that will get paired alongside guys like Salvador Perez, right?
And Carlos Estevez.
I forgot to throw Luinda Ovala in there and he looked good in his one outing
that I got to watch visually way, way back in pool play.
But when you put these guys on the global stage,
it's one thing to be a part of the team in the World Baseball Classic.
It's a totally different thing to be a top contributor.
Vinnie Pasquantino has three home runs in one game.
First World Baseball Classic player to ever do that.
And Italy's had this Cinderella run.
They're undefeated still.
They're the only undefeated team left in the tournament.
US lost to Italy earlier on and Venezuela lost to Team DR earlier on in pool play.
They have had a miraculous run and seeing Vinnie do that and be a part of these interviews
and express a machine and all of that.
And not to mention Jack Caglione is playing very well too.
It's putting the royals name out there.
Where what's going to happen?
Well, people are going to want to tune in and watch the royals.
They're going to want to keep up with the royals because they have all these guys
that are thriving in front of millions of people.
It seems like Michael Garcia is playing incredibly well.
Bobby Whit Jr. is playing maybe the best shortstop we've seen in a two week stretch in a long,
long time.
The plays he is making have been so effortless.
You got Jeff Pass in tweeting about everything he does on the baseball diamond is unbelievable.
It's ridiculous.
These players all play for the royals where I know a lot of you have been listening
for a long time.
Many more of you have been royals fans much longer than this podcast has ever been around.
Which isn't many years, to be honest.
But there was a large portion of time.
Whether you're 50 or you're 20.
Where you just didn't have any star potential in Kansas City.
If you did, it was one player.
The royals are entering this era where there are more league wide recognized names.
Bobby Whit Jr. is an easy one.
But now Vinnie Pass Quintino, even though last couple of years he's been very good.
A 30 plus home run season 100 plus RBI.
Everybody loves to see him in front of the camera.
But when you do that continuously, now you start to become that league wide name where
people want to see you in the old star game.
People want to tune into the game because they get to watch Vinnie Pass Quintino.
And is this going to correlate to regular season success?
It may, it may not.
The good news is the guys that are competing in the world baseball classic for the royals.
Most of them have already put it together for a big league season before.
Bobby's done it.
Sally's done it.
Vinnie's done it.
And Mike Kelly.
I always say Mike Kelly.
I can't quite remember.
But four guys right there that have done it before the big league level.
Then you've got your upside guys and Jack Caglione and the Winder Avala.
Forgot to throw Carl's a step as in there that has done it for an extended period of time
at the big league level.
It's different than if the royals had no five unproven guys that were playing really
well in the world baseball classic.
That's actually happened before 2023.
MJ Melinda is just playing for Puerto Rico.
Carl's Hernandez was playing for Venezuela.
And you had a couple of guys that yes, might have looked really good in the tournament,
but it didn't really translate to lasting success in 2023 or beyond that, right?
This year it has that different energy to it where you're getting national accounts,
national reporters talk about how impressive the royals have been in this tournament.
And whereas in spring training and we've done an episode now two weeks ago on it of well
spring training numbers, they're not the end all be all.
As it correlates to the regular season, sometimes it doesn't, right?
Some guys would tell you as a player, I need to play well in spring training to have
that confidence, to have that rhythm going into regular season.
Some guys would tell you, I don't care if I go over 50.
It's not going to matter come regular season time.
The world baseball classic though I did just mention it not being the end all be all either.
I mean, you could go hit 480 and in five to six games in the world baseball classic and
start the season over 20.
But there's more at stake and you're hearing players talk about how this is more important
to them than a world series, right?
The players that are not representing team USA, we've sorted from the DR, Venezuela that
this matters so much to them because they're representing their country and they're trying
to win a tournament that happens only three every three years.
So everybody in this tournament, not working on stuff.
You are trying to win each and every game.
You are trying to proudly represent your country, even if you are not directly from that
country, if you were not born in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, right?
You've got guys on team Italy that are mostly American born, but they have Italian heritage
and they wear that with pride and they're not going out there just going through the
motions to make sure they're ready for the regular season.
That matters to them, but this is that snapshot of you get that early sneak peak of what the
regular season would look like with everybody maxing out.
A prime example, Luis Severino last night starting for Team DR, average 95 of this fast
ball and he sat 98 to 100 last night because the atmosphere and how amped up he was, he's
stomping on the mound and yelling at the US dugout.
These are all great things to see because it adds that element of, I want to watch this.
This is not boring baseball, there's a good pace to it.
There's emotion, the crowd is unbelievable.
It's chaotic and to see good numbers, to see royals, players producing in those environments,
it shows they're not shying away from those environments.
They are making big plays, they are showing up and I think it's such a great, I don't
even want to call an appetizer to the regular season because that would be diminishing how
popular and how global the world baseball classic is.
This is a main course meal before the main course.
You get two main course meals and that's what makes baseball great.
It's why this event is so important to the lifeblood of the sport and continuing to grow
it years down the road.
What have you made of the royals representation and success in the world baseball classic?

All of the world baseball classic talk as we had mentioned in the first segment has
distracted us from what's been going on in surprise.
Maybe it hasn't for you.
You've been locked in on what's happening for the royals in surprise and not given one
ounce of care about the world baseball classic, but I of course have been doing both.
I've cared more about what I've seen in the world baseball classic than some of the ongoing
position battles of late, not that I have completely been careless or oblivious to it.
I've been keeping up and watching and following along each and every game, but now that we
know how the roster is shaping up and who is going to be in the starting nine, who's
going to be in the rotation, we know that we have another week basically to decide who
gets that final bench spot.
There are three that are already occupied.
They also could carry one less picture in the bullpen and carry two bench guys.
But if you were to go back a couple of weeks ago, my front runner to win the final job
on the bench was Josh Rojas.
My opinion has now changed not so much about the overall performance, but what's being
said from camp.
There was an article from MLB either yesterday or early this morning about one player from
each camp who was stood out.
They go to each and every reporter around the league that covers that team and they give
one player.
Andy Rogers is a very tapped in the no type of reporter for the royals.
She said that Nick Lofton was the player that has stood out in camp.
To me, that's a little bit of the numbers, also a little bit of where the royals might
be leading toward.
She doesn't go out there and say he's made the roster, but that he's inching closer to
be that guy on the roster.
So that we said about Josh Rojas, what have we said about Kevin Newman, Brandon Drury,
they have to perform well in camp because it's the only thing they can provide the royals
as a reason to be on the roster.
You can't be an NRI guy, an on roster invite guy and hit 180.
And the organization go, well, we don't only care about that.
We know that you're capable of showing us.
You still got what you had back in 2023 or 2024.
Now you have to go out there and hit 350, play great defense and prove why you're more
worthy than somebody that was on the roster last year.
And for Nick Lofton, his defensive versatility was always going to be a plus.
Him being a right handed hitter was going to be a plus because of all the lefties they
have in the starting nine.
And the fact that over the last couple of weeks, we have not seen the same Josh Rojas,
we've not seen the same Kevin Newman of Brandon Drury.
It leads me to believe that Nick Lofton is going to grab that final bench spot.
And it was going to be a stretch and maybe this was naive of me in jumping the gun a little
bit and picking Rojas over Nick Lofton two to three weeks ago because you need to see
it for a long time in spring training.
Josh Rojas had to go play great defense all around the diamond.
He had to hit 340, 350, whereas Nick Lofton, he is hitting north of 300.
He didn't really have to to make the roster.
And that's what I was being oblivious to three weeks ago, where if Josh Rojas played
himself off the roster, Nick Lofton had to just handle his own.
If Nick Lofton hit 260 and camp with Josh Rojas hit 200 or 190, then we'd be having the
same conversation we're having right now.
This is going to go to Nick Lofton.
You could always make the case that it's Tyler Tolbert over Nick Lofton.
Tolbert has the base stealing ability.
He is versatile.
And last year he was better offensively than Nick Lofton.
Nick Lofton's also a former first round pick.
He's somebody that's been around the organization for quite some time.
And when I was down in surprise asking Q about Nick Lofton, he was speaking of him back
then like he was somebody that was already on the roster.
And managers are going to do that from time to time.
I could have given him somebody that had no chance of making the roster.
And he would talk about how valuable that guy is and where they see him fitting into
the roster.
Nick Lofton though had the inside edge.
He was somebody that was going to be able to showcase how versatile he is defensively.
He was going to showcase that with a relatively good spring, he was worthy enough of caring
around as a bench bat.
I will say this, the leash is not going to be incredibly long.
He's not going to play a ton.
The Royals have plenty of versatile guys in the starting nine.
Lofton though is going to get those opportunities against left-handed pitchers.
But the question will become, where is that going to be?
What position would he be penciled into?
You have some guys that are dealing with injuries back in camp.
I mean, there's been some soreness going around.
It seems like Jonathan India had the growing soreness.
He now appears to be fine.
Isaac Collins had some soreness as well.
Maybe that's why you'd lean a little bit more toward Lofton because he can play left
field.
He's a right-handed bat.
He's been around the organization where Rojas is a left-handed bat and doesn't play left
field all that often anymore.
Lofton has been getting a lot of work in the outfield.
And the Royals have comfort with him.
They have familiarity with him.
And if he stays healthy, if he continues to play multiple positions in the final week,
my answer is going to stay the same.
I'm going to be locked in on it probably seven days from now.
If we don't see any change, which how much change can there really be over the course
of a week, then I'm going to go with Lofton.
And if he comes up in April and he's hitting 180, 190, you've got to look elsewhere.
Because there is enough of a book.
There's enough data.
There's enough numbers to go back and look at and say this just might be who he is.
He's more of a foray guy where he can hit really well in Omaha.
He's never going to be able to hit well at the big league level.
And you're going to have to pivot elsewhere to find somebody who can be a serviceable bench
bat.
So I'm changing my answer for the now.
I originally thought Josh Rojas would be the guy that would break camp with the team.
Now I'm starting to believe it's going to be Lofton when the Royals break camp later
on next week and head to Atlanta to begin the 2026 regular season.
Do you have Nick Lofton making the roster or Josh Rojas?
Or is there somebody else that you would give the nod to over the previous two?
Let us know in the comments below.
When we come back, we're going to talk about some other roster decisions.
The Royals are going to have to make over the next 10 days.
That's coming up on Lofton Rojas.

That's how you can find us each and every day.
It's kind of crazy to be back in this chair and talking about the royals after having
a week off.
Now I hope you guys enjoyed all the interviews we did with the variety of guests.
Wanted to make sure that while it was on vacation, you guys were still getting the daily
content that you deserve.
What we didn't get to discuss though over last week was some of the roster decisions that
are coming down to the wire and tough decisions the royals are going to have to make.
Sometimes injuries are going to be able to change that, right?
If guys are still battling through something in camp, you might have somebody eat their
way onto the roster just for a couple of weeks and then when that guy's healthy, they'll
be removed from the bullpen or somewhere on the bench because that's really what I'm
looking at here.
The royals would never put somebody on the roster, expect them to be a starter and then
a couple of weeks later, take them off.
It's going to be somebody who's grabbing the last spot in the bullpen or grabbing the last
spot in the bench.
We don't need to go back over the Nick Lofton, Josh Rojas, Kevin Newman, Tyler Tober situation.
We know all about that.
We almost have covered every single angle of who might be grabbing the final 26 spot on
this team.
I want to discuss the guy starting tomorrow, which will be Bailey Falter, and you'll
be able to watch that Royals game on TV.
Bailey Falter was somebody early on in camp.
I was giving the nod too, so yes, I've had a change of heart on the final two positions
that have been up for debate all Camp Lofton.
I thought Bailey Falter, out of options, if he pitches all right in camp and the stuff
looks good, the command looks good, then he is going to be in that bullpen.
He's expressed his ability to start and relieve.
The royals gave up resources to get him at the trade deadline last year.
That also factored into my opinion of do the royals want to give up on somebody who gave
him less than 20 innings.
You gave up somebody to guys to Pittsburgh in Evan Sisk and Cal and Moss.
I believe it was to go get a guy you believe to be an extra starter, and you can never have
too many starters whether you're going to keep them on the roster or you're going to
trade them.
I see this being more of the trade route.
Daniel Lynch is showcasing better stuff in camp, and Daniel Lynch is somebody that has
been around the royals organization long enough, where it was going to take Bailey Falter,
really proving to everybody that he was the much better option.
Daniel Lynch had the same stuff that he did last year, and he hadn't had anything to
his arsenal, and I view Daniel Lynch differently now.
I see him as somebody that can be a one-to-two-any-guy for you, or he can be a three to four-any-guy
for you, and he can do it at a better rate than Bailey Falter can.
Bailey Falter is going to rely on pitching the contact, locating well, and the command
is just not where it needs to be.
And let's also factor in this part of it.
The royals have brought the fences in, and pitched the contact guys have to be very fine
with their stuff.
You can't get away with a lot of garbage over the middle of the plate.
You can't miss with a 90-to-91 mile-an-hour fastball.
Guys can get away missing with 95-to-96 if it's got some good run to it.
Falter doesn't really have any of that, and that's going to be one of the decisions that
they're going to be coming to in the next 10 days or so.
That bullpen has seven guys that have a spot.
This also leads me to talk about Alex Lane and Luinda Ovala and Ryan Berger.
Steven Colick is now out of this conversation because he hasn't had the time to build back
up since suffering the oblique injury.
Luinda Ovala pitched early on the World Baseball Classic, but hasn't pitched since.
And that long layoff could put the royals in a spot where they say, we are going to
go with somebody who's been getting the consistent reps.
Well, Ovala was a late addition to Team Venezuela.
I'm not going to hold it against him at all.
He was provided with an excellent opportunity and his team's still in it, and he could pitch
tonight.
And if they win, he could maybe pitch against Team USA in the championship out of the bullpen.
Guys are tired at this point.
They've been playing more so, maybe than they would have back in camp, and Luinda Ovala
has to stay ready, but he was never going to turn down that opportunity to go represent
his country in an tournament like that.
It took away some potential starts in surprise.
Maybe that's why they'll go with Ryan Berger.
Alex Lang, the stuff looks good.
I would say that I was concerned.
I was a little bit wary about where the command would be.
You've got a guy that missed basically all of last year, and when you take a flyer on
a guy like that, you're giving him an opportunity.
It's not always the greatest start in camp.
I'm not worried about the overall stuff, though.
I'm worried about if he can stay healthy, if that stuff can be harnessed again, because
he had it in Detroit.
He had good stuff, and he was able to command it, hence why he was the tiger's closer for
a number of years.
We've seen this before with the royals, though.
You bring in somebody, you've got high hopes for them.
They're just never able to put it together health-wise, or they can't really harness that
good stuff, above average stuff, and they're arsenal.
And that's why Alex Lang, for now, because he has options, can be that guy where you say,
let's go see if you can do it in Omaha.
Away from spring training, away from the perfect weather and facing guys that you would
already be facing in AAA.
He's not seeing a lot of big league talent in camps now.
This could be the better route of, we're not saying you're not a part of this team in
the future.
This is a go show us in Omaha.
That stuff is too good for AAA.
That's what his responsibility can be.
Lewinder Ovalam, pretty much the same thing for me.
Go show that your stuff is just not worth the time to watch you go and dominate in Omaha.
Know that was more of a poor choice of words there, but I'm more submitting with those
two guys.
Prove that AAA is no match for you.
You're going over there and you've got a sub to ERA, you're striking out 30% of guys.
You have to be in Kansas City's bullpen.
And that's where it brings me to Ryan Berger.
Berger has been started.
He's been getting the reps.
He's been built up.
And if he goes up and pitches out of the bullpen to begin the year and he's not pitching
that often, maybe that's where you say, okay, well, let's go see if you can stay stretched
out in Omaha.
And we'll give that spot to Alex Lang and a one ending role where that might be better
suited for the royals bullpen.
I've expressed my thoughts on it before.
Ryan Berger to me can have stuff that plays up in a relief role.
And he also gives you that ability to go three or four endings.
If somebody does it have it on that day or you're up by six runs and he needs somebody
to eat some endings and game one of a series, all of those are things the royals have to
be deciding over the next 10 days.
We'll see how the roster all comes about.
I should say when it's posted a little over 13 days or 11 days actually from now when
the royals will finally announce that 26 man roster, I'm sure we'll have a pretty good
idea as to who's all going to be on it a few days before that.
But there are still some moves to be made and we'll see what the royals decide upon
