The shadow, the serious character who devotes life to writing wrong, protecting the innocent, and punishing the guilty is a reality of the mud cramster. Well-fey young man about town, student of science, and master of other people's mind. Using advanced methods that may ultimately become available to all law enforcement agencies, Cranston is known to criminals and evil doers as the shadow. Never seen, only heard, as haunting to superstitious minds, as a ghost, as inevitable, as a guilty conscience. Cranston's friend and companion, the lovely Margot Lane, is the only person who knows to whom the unseen voice belongs. Today's story, Mother in E flat. Yay!
Oh my God, what of it is? Hey, what's up. Come on over here you and broad. We have checking the seat out here. We have a low hell of an idea. Got room for us. Hi quit, imma of your car using the band in case. Why, this kidding bat, that's the hardest lesson. I'm still taking away Christmas. Why, now that's less, sir. Get me the warm and the warm and sweetest. I have seen you all. I have seen you all. I have seen you all. I have seen you all. Oh! I have seen you all. I have seen you all. I have seen you all. Hello. Hello. Yeah, that keeps.
I thought it was cut off. Yeah, that's the place. That new swing joint unfippably. Yeah, it did about. Oh, nobody thinks it know what happened. The plan was planning to joint just flew up. We don't know yet how many were ahead. The thing was, it's on the note, the end of the bar. To make my sense, though. Read it again, again, again, sure here it is. It says, the only real music is the music of silence. Yeah, funny business. Okay, I'll report back to headquarters soon to the average. Oh, go on, Henry. Have that car in front. That's my dear, I can't without cropping that white line. And the car. Oh, now then make them pull over. Oh, Henry, blow your heart. Plus you're not supposed to blow your heart in the city, my dear. You know that, the end I know is committing sin. I don't care what the end I know is committed sin. Blow your heart and make that sound get over. That's what you say, my dear.
There's officer. I was driving about 50 yards behind their car. They started to swing out of line and blew their horn. And then it happened. This awful explosion. I tell you I've never known about it. Yeah, I know. Where'd you get this note? Out to the explosion, I noticed it lying in front seat, besides it. Somebody must have thrown it in through the window. What do you suppose it means, officer? And let's look at it again. Let's just be a warning to you. Auto horns, you play things of the devil. Silence. What does it mean, officer? I don't know, mister. But I've got you, I forget I had a horn. No, ma'am. It's something very peculiar about these bombings. It's the serious explosions that leave the paper here, Corson. There's another one last night. We not filming it blew up in the river. Yes, the mud I was reading about it. The papers says they found a note, nearly by duck. Something about silence is the golden token of true peace. Oh, it sounds like some crime. Yes, I didn't sinister. I was just wondering if it was a crime.
Oh, it sounds like some crime. Yes, I didn't sinister. Silence. That word has appeared in every note. Silence. The only other two that has been found at all, free bombings, is a piece of you-shaped metal. Now, I wonder if... Ma'am, go on. You know what a tuning fork looks like, don't you? Well, certainly. It's like a new... Exactly. A piece of metal shaped like a U. Look at this picture here in the paper. It's from there in the hole of the bomb, Peter. It certainly looks like a tuning fork, all right? But I don't see... Now, the do-I, Margot. Yet I feel there's a link between the word silence, the use tuning forks and the bombings. Sure. And if there is a link, Margot, I've got a hunch that this city may be in for one of the most terrifying odd deals it has ever experienced. I don't believe you're being more of a drop of bombings. I don't know what to believe, Margot. I don't know what...
I'm not playing the Chicago now ready in Geek 4. I'm not playing Chicago now ready in Geek 4. Good night, John. Don't forget to wire me. Hi there. See you Thursday. Bye, bother. Goodbye, son. I hope you have a smooth flight. Shall we go, Mary? Let's wait, mother. I like to watch them take off. John comes to waste in the plane. He's going to sit on this side. It doesn't just say dear, but I must admit that for one of those motors, always makes me a bit nervous. Mary is on a dead John! Fire John! Bob! Extra. Extra. Read all about the latest mystery bombing. No warning silence found at Central Airport. Extra. Extra latest mystery bombing, stop it. All right. Is there a cover call for a good even on the bomb? Yes, Christian Weston. We're stuck in a wreckage package. And this note here was pasted on the police phone
back in the back. Let's see it. One more crap, it is a roar of doom. Silence. Silence. Silence. I didn't plan my words, but in every note we found. Yes, sir. What's a laboratory report, Sergeant? What explodes a bomb? A bomb is attached to a photoelectric cell. One of these here, new shaped pieces of metal. No, I'm finding all the bombing. I see. Well, how does it work? Well, it's not a light-disk mission, but the laboratory says that this new shaped piece of metal is a tuning fork. And the flat tuning squares. Well, the tuning fork is placed so that when the sound of these flat bi-blaces it breaks the light beam as a photoelectric cell is attached to the bomb. And when the light beam is broken, the second floor of the bomb goes off. I think I see what you mean. Just like your body breaks a light beam opens the doors or somebody's new hotel. Yes, sir. Yes, that's the idea. Well, there were sounds reported just before each of those bombing. The sound of that trumpet, that auto horn, and that fork on and that placer. And the noise goes out, plain order. I could have done it all right. Whoever thought that one up is dumb, my time's coming. But I still don't get these notes.
These warnings about silence. There must be some reason why. I... Hello, there's no weapons, speaking. Hello, Commissioner. A shadow. Right, you're welcome, isn't it? Well, what do you want? I'm Sissy. Very busy. And for the heavenly time. No, Commissioner. These bombing are getting a bit out of hand on today. And I suppose you know all about them. No, not all. These pieces of you shaped men view me finding. You're in forks, aren't they? How did you know that? Never mind. Aren't they? Yes. Is that what our laboratory calls them? E-flat-turing forks. Look up to a photo-electric cell, tax to the bomb. When the sound vibrates the fork, it passes in front of the cell's light beam and that... And that flows as the circuit and explodes the bomb. Very neat, eh, Commissioner? Very. Anything else I can do for you? Just one thing more, Commissioner. Yes. Do you realize what all this means? Why? Because the notes has contained the word silence. You must broadcast a general warning to the city at once. Use the radio, use the newspapers. Use any means that you're command.
But warn the people immediately that there must be absolute silence. Until the murderer is caught. They must not make any musical instruments blow their huddle horns. In fact, they must not do anything to make a loud noise of any kind. That might set off another of these tuning fork bombs. For the penalty, may be death. It was right here they found one of the bombs. It was one of these trash bags. Yeah. Imagine a right here of one of the busiest cars in the city. I tell you it's enough to give it a creeps. That'll it is. Look up the avenue there. Here it is the middle of the day and not a car inside. Or have it had my car out of the garage since the police commission of broadcast that warning? Thank you, sir. You should even have squirking break my chain in a kingdom come. Or I can tell you a kingdom come a bit better than this. They don't find a guy that's planning these bombs so much. The whole town's gone off it's not telling me.
I haven't slept before a night. It's awful silence. Like a wet blanket over your face. There you have to stay and not stop. Stop painting that floor, Robert. You're making me so nervous I could scream. You nervous. That's good. How about me? I can't stand the silence much longer. I can't stand. I have Robert. Remember Commissioner Weston's warning? No one knows where the bombs are planning. Not in a shot might be. I know. I know. Even a shot might be an e-flap. A note of death. That's what the colleague of ours. He's silly isn't it? But what do they call this? This awful tomb really big? I have Robert please. Come on. We're going out of this town. Stop packing. We'll leave you on the first train. I don't know where we're going. But where's my kid? You look model. No LeBos, you. No. Commissioner Weston has already checked all the music stores but I... I still think you might have overlooked one. Several of the stores I checked at the Seoul Union Box recently but only one was an e-flap.
That was purchased by the Board of Education. You don't look cut to the head of the market. No, I did model. Not until we've checked every music store in the city. Now here's the list of stores. We'll separate again. You take these out of the market and then this now visit the event. What's the matter? We just hold him out. Every minute moves us closer to the next explosion. Yeah, we're listening. I'm running to go off these deserted streets like that like I was moving through something city of the dead. Yes, it's like a plague. A plague of silence. But we must be on our way, model. It's not a moment to lose. Your path to pharmacy can be closer than you think. I'll meet you at the Andrews music store. First, I'll be visited this morning. Next to another one, I'll see you there. How's that? We haven't sold an e-plat tuning fork in months. Is there anything else there? Oh, miss. We're a whole set of you see. We only sell the music schools and such. You may don't buy it during forks, though. What's that, mister? Filling fork? No, we just handle sheet music, radio, and second. Maybe we'd like to sheet music. And what can I do for you, miss? Nothing, thank you. I'm just waiting for someone if you don't mind. Oh, no, not at all. By the way, won't you in here this morning? Yes, I was. Yes, I remember you now. You were with the gentleman who wanted to know if we'd sold an e-tuning fork slightly. Well, that's right. He said you hadn't. Yes, and after you left, I did remember one sale, but that was to one of our regular customers.
It was a long time ago. That wouldn't be what you knew. No, I suppose not. No. Dr. Bedou is a very fine man. Fine musician, too. He's brought a number of musical instruments from us. Of course he did strike me a Bedard. On? What was on? Well, Dr. Bedou, wanting all of those tuning forks for the same pitch. He flat, I believe it was. He flat? Yes, but you know how musician's got it. Oh, no, of course not, but I suppose I should see this Dr. Bedou just for the record, you know. Would you like his address? Yes, if you'd be so kind. Yes, sure. I'll write it down for you. Dr. Andre Bedou, 2218 West Knight Street. Thank you. And if the gentleman I'm waiting for should arrive while I'm gone, tell him to wait. Yes, yes, I'm going to. His name is Lamont Cramston.
If I'm delayed, tell him to meet me at Dr. Bedou. What is the 18th? Yes. Dr. Bedou? Yes, that is right. Dr. Bedou. Dr. of music. Bet you know what? And you, my dear? My name is Magdalene Dr. Annavorite student. Oh, musician. I'm so beautiful. Do come in. Thank you. This is my studio. Oh, it's charming. You teach here? No, no, I send them to teach my dear. I'm composer. Grade composer. No, I'm afraid that it's still my own little secret. But then you wouldn't have time for a simple student like myself. Do you know more on the contrary, my dear? It has always been my special pleasure to encourage real talent, especially a beautiful talent.
Yes, yes, that's very nice, but I'm not awfully talented in here, do I? I don't really believe you'd be interested. No, but I have already decided I would be interested. Most interested. But first, you are just in time for a treat. Oh, where are the treats? Well, I'm afraid I must go now. I just remember them at the point. You should remember that before you interrupted my work. Now that you are here, you shall remain on until it is my pleasure to dismiss you. You can't do that. Sit down. Yes. I did not ask you to disturb me. But now that you are here, you shall share a secret with me. You like secrets, no? Most young women like secrets, but can't keep them. I think you shall keep this one, my dear. What is that? What did you say? What? Oh, you are wasting your breath, my dear. Really, you are. This is your soundproof, completely soundproof. And now, for my secret, you see this beautiful electric organ.
Me? Yes, of course that. This electric organ shall reveal my secret. My greatest composition. I shall play it for you now on this beautiful organ. Oh, pardon me, just a moment, my dear. The door seems to have blown open. Yes. You know, the turn of the lock will guard us against the key to us. So close that door, you hear me? What? Really, you don't seem to realize what a great armor I am, this boat is so on you. But you shall be my thrust, and the last to hear my greatest composition. My simple new sailor in the flat. Do I frighten you myself? It's so tight. But you are, my only invited guest, aren't you? My only guest. The lighting is quite poor for shadows, my dear. There are no shadows in my studio. You're one thing more, before I play my scene for you, you see the black box on that pedestal there?
Answer me, do you? Yes, yes, I see. The box is my invention. It is a bomb. The famous others I have placed about the city. And it shall permit you and me to die. You see, my dear, into the final climax of my symphony, I have written the final climax of life itself. Yeah, yeah, but enough of this program notes. Yeah, let us begin the performance. Yeah, listen, my dear. Listen to the pale beauty of the whole tone. Truly a feast, isn't it? A feast or just a tour of us? Three, Dr. Bendo. Three of us. Bendo, he told you where I was. Three. Three. No, who speaks? I am the shadow. Is the shadow? Who is it, of course, my inner voice, my shadow? The shadow of my poor weak conscience.
In your course, shadow, the three of us. Yes, yes, that's right. We've had an exciting time lately, haven't we, Bendo? You, the master, I, your shadow. I'm thanksizing, my shadow. And it has led off to victory. Yes, we have a blast, one hour war on noise. The silent city pays tribute to our cause. But why, Bendo? Why have we waged this war on the city? Why these bombings? Why this terror? Sure, you forget so soon. You are a poor conscience, you are, shadow. Yes, but once more I will tell you. We have been waiting the war, the war, the war for peace. Only the true peace is a simple peace of silence. Yes, Bendo, but quiet, quiet, my conscience. Highlands is the only way to fight the unhappiness in the world today. This world of ours with its war, its chaos, its noise.
Yes, yes, above all its noise. How many of our baths are still unexpoded, Bendo? How many? Three. Throughout the city, I forget for shadow. And one here on the pedestal, waiting to play its part in my symphony of silence. Waiting for me to play E flat. But the three in the city, Bendo. Where did we leave them? Oh, what a poor conscience you are, shadow. One's conscience should not forget to ask them. But I will forgive you. Don't you remember the one we left in the elevator shafts of the stage building? Yes, I remember now. Very clever of us, wasn't it, Bendo? Yes, and then all that we planted behind the time was bell in the sport hammering. Oh, but of course, how stupid of me to forget? The third in the Clam Terminal. Three noisy places without a doubt. Yes, but noisy no longer. The city has a calendar of tombs. And so long as it remains, I'll and so too will the bomb.
But now, now my symphony reaches its climax. My work has finished. Listen to the compelling beauty of the finale. Here. Here, there are two tones. Starting up. Ah! Ah! Yes! Ha ha ha ha! It's a worth of a must, sir. I, Bendo, the greatest of them all. And now, now this final suspension, and this final resolution, the memory of my symphony in finance, in this... Then, M. Over, just rest a minute. Everything is all right. Okay, slow down, M. Over. There was no explosion. The Dr. Bendo looked line-down across the keyboard. Yes, dead. Quite dead.
It was Bendo's body pressing against the keyboard that caused the rumbling. You thought was an explosion. I still don't understand. What happened? All the time I was talking to Bendo, I was standing beside the pedestal on which you placed the bomb. When he started to play the organ, I disconnected the photoelectric cell from the bomb, making it harmless. What the hell was that? Heart failure, my dear Margot. A victim of his own hypnosis. He was so assured that the explosion would occur, that it did, in his distorted mind. I think heaven is all over. Yes, the symphony of silence is over. The terror is ended. Once more, the city can return to its normal life. Once more, as people are safe to work and play, laugh and cry. Free from the terror that has nearly driven the men. Yes, and once more, men has learned that there is only one musician who can play the cosmic music of silence and sound.
The master musician of the mall, the composer of life itself. Let no man help you into crime. For crime is like a strangling serpent. It crushes him who feeds it most. There were, thus, the serpent of crime ensnare you in his falls. Remember, crime does not pay that shadow knows.
