The San Jose Sharks Audio Network presents
The Teal Report.
Here's Dan Ruzanowski.
The Sharks look to recover from a disappointing result
on Friday night at SAP Center against St. Louis
with their second and final meeting of the regular season
against the New York Islanders.
Lots of the future of the NHL is playing in tonight's game.
McLean set a breeding.
Michael Misa, Sam Dickinson on the shark side
and 18-year-old Matthew Schaeffer,
a spectacular young defenseman who is certain
to get a lot of attention in tonight's contest
for the islanders.
It's also going to be the first game that Braden Shen plays
in an islander uniform.
Uniquely yesterday, he was a member of the St. Louis Blues
staying at the Valencia Hotel in San Jose
when he was informed by General Manager Doug Armstrong
that he was traded to the islanders.
Not only are the islanders playing here the very next day,
but they were staying in the same hotel.
And so all that Shen had to do was walk down the hallway,
meet Coach Patrick Wah and the staff,
and figure out where the meal room was.
Meanwhile, for the sharks, they'll go with Yaroslav Askerov
in goal looking for his 20th win of the season.
He had a strong effort in much of the Montreal Canadians game,
but he gave up five goals,
and that's something he does not want to do against the islanders
who will go with Ilya Sarokid in net,
looking for his 23rd win of the year.
The shark's record is now 30-25 and five for 65 points.
There are only two points out of a last playoff spot
currently held by the Seattle Kraken,
and there are only three points behind the Edmonton Oilers
in the Battle for Third Place in the Pacific Division.
The islanders are in third place in the Metropolitan,
with 75 points this year,
but that point total is the same number that Pittsburgh has
for second place.
Pittsburgh is playing at home against Philadelphia today,
and so the islanders approached this game,
hoping for a flyer's win in Western Pennsylvania,
and for them, two points against the San Jose Sharks,
however they can get it.
Winds are definitely hard to come by,
and there is no margin for error.
The sharks learned that last night against the Blues,
after falling behind one nothing on a goal by Jimmy Snuggeroot.
Good skating on both sides here as Cam Fowler leads the attack
for the Blues up to the Sharks line,
bodyed up by Ostop Chuck as he shoots one end.
Now on the far side of the ice,
Barkley Goodrow roughed up a little bit there
by the defenseman Tucker.
Snuggeroot turns shoot score.
Snuggeroot gets the puck from that far right board
on the left circle,
and he just turned and snapped it,
and the son of a former shark,
Dave Snuggeroot is able to make it one nothing,
St. Louis, at 655 of this first period.
Alex Nadellkovich would play a strong matchup,
making a big save on Robert Thomas early in the second period.
The Snuggeroot is in there, fighting Wendberg with it.
Wendberg turns away from two players.
What a job Alex Wendberg just did there.
Oh, it turned over though by Klingberg in front Thomas
to the left to Klingberg.
The shot by Thomas.
Oh my gosh, what a save by Nadellkovich.
He not only got his left pad on it,
but they look like there was a little rebound there for Thomas
and somehow it stayed out of it at,
and that is a spectacular stop by the Shark School Tenor.
But on the other side of the ice,
Jordan Binnington had a strong effort
and made this stop of Macklin's Set of Breenys
had champed with 15 minutes to go in the middle frame.
Will Smith's in for checking Mayhew
threw it across the ring, intercepted by Set of Breenys.
And shoots one quick look save by Binnington.
That's his best one yet.
Five minutes into the second period.
Binnington stops Set of Breenys and keeps it one nothing St. Louis.
Seconds after that, Pavel Buchnevich had a golden chance for St. Louis,
but Nadellkovich was there.
Inside their own zone, Cairo sends it off the right boards,
knocked back the other way by Eklin and Tafoli,
but Tafoli gave it away.
Buchnevich, sound enough wingside breaking,
and shooting it, quick look save by Nadellkovich.
And so one great club stop on one end by Binnington
and Nadellkovich does it with 5-13 gone by in the second period.
And then with five and a half to go in the period,
Set of Breenys would tie the game with the brilliant opportunity.
It's held in by Orlov.
Penely is over.
Five on five now with Set of Breenys.
Shoot start!
Macklin, Set of Breenys, ties the game 1-1
and it will not count as a power play goal.
It's his 31st goal of the season,
but that is a power play influence goal if I've ever seen one.
The Sharks won and the Blues won with 5-29 to go in the second.
But unlike recent games in which the Sharks won all three contests
against some pretty good squads,
San Jose did not hold that intensity,
and they had some bad turnovers,
all of which resulted in some big plays for St. Louis.
Robert Thomas would get a huge goal
with only 2-14 left in the second period
to give the Blues a 2-1 lead.
Here's Klingberg having trouble with it.
He's able to keep it away from Snuggaroo.
Now Snuggaroo centers in the Blues score!
Snuggaroo stole that away from Klingberg,
centered in Robert Thomas,
snapped it past an elk if it's to put the Blues in front 2-1.
But true to form, the Sharks refused to yield.
They continued to work really hard,
and it would be key for Sherwood to extend his goal scoring streak
to two straight games as he tied the score 2-2
with six-and-a-half to play in the third.
He bounces it off the endboard,
grabs scoots in the grab it,
pivots away from Fowler, throws behind it,
and that's Henry Feetscar!
Sherwood ties the game on a cruise ship pass,
and that was a brilliant one-timer by Kiefer Sherwood,
and that gets everybody in throws at SAP Center
as this game is all even.
Over time brought an unfortunate end in the opening minute
as Robert Thomas found his skates in the right place
at the right time with Phillip Broberg playing
over 32 minutes, getting the top assist on the winner.
It will drop pass for Robert Thomas,
and he will stay in the zone,
and he will drop it back for Broberg.
This is trouble. Broberg shoots its block.
They score!
Robert Thomas is in front of the net.
I think he tipped it,
and the St. Louis Blues went three to two and over time.
For defenseman Mario Ferraro,
the result came because of the way that the Sharks
did not execute properly in the contest.
I did think we controlled most of the play.
I think looking back on it,
we'll probably say that we made a few too many
sloppy, executional plays.
Myself included, I think breakouts.
It was just a block play.
But, you know, we stuck with it,
we battled, we gave ourselves a chance
and over time we just didn't find a way to,
obviously we'd like to have that extra point,
but it's a quick turnaround.
So, you know, we got to move on from it,
but those are points that we're going to,
you know, need to rack up as many of them.
So, as much as we would have liked to get to,
still, you know, good to get the one.
Will Smith said that the Sharks had a lot more
to give against the Blues,
and they need to give more tonight.
Yeah, I still don't think we,
our fourth strike wasn't the best.
I think that's what we're generating.
It was for our chances,
and yeah, it wasn't the best.

The islanders are coming off
a back-to-back set of losses in Southern California,
five to one to the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday,
and then on Thursday,
a five-three defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings.
Hit Coach Patrick Was says that getting off to a good start
is certainly going to be a factor in tonight's game,
and having Braden shed in the lineup should help.
Let us three wins we had.
I mean, we were trailing at some point in the game,
so I mean, I think it's going to be important for us
to have a good start and play a good game.
I mean, you don't control that,
but I mean, what we control is how well prepared
we're going to have to be and learn from those games.
I mean, even if we had a lot of shots on it against Anaheim,
I didn't thought we were as sharp as we could be
and the same thing in LA,
Ilya was so good in that first period,
so I mean, the star's going to be important for us,
and obviously, I mean, having a new player,
I mean, bring some excitement to the team,
and I'm sure it'll bring some energy as well.
