2:11It is the hardest question in the Christian faith and most people have never been given a straight answer to it in their lives. Because almost every explanation starts in the wrong place. At Nicaea, at church councils, in theology classrooms, centuries, too late. We are starting at the beginning in the Hebrew in the first verse of the Bible. And what has written there leads to a word almost everyone gets wrong, a verse that names God twice in the same sentence, and a courtroom where one sentence got a man killed. This was never invented. It has been sitting in the text for 3,000 years in plain sight, waiting for somebody to read it slowly. By the end of this video, you will understand it perfectly. Before we open Genesis, we need to be honest about what people say, because you have probably heard this before. The strongest objection goes like this.

3:14The Trinity is three gods dressed up as one. A pagan doctrine borrowed from Rome. Invented at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD by politicians who had never read the Hebrew Bible. That is the hardest version of the argument. And we are not going to ignore it. We are going to test it, not with theology textbooks, not with church tradition, but with the text itself. Starting at verse 1, Genesis chapter 1, verse 1. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The Hebrew word used for God in this verse is Elohim. And Elohim is a plural noun. You may have heard this used as evidence for the Trinity. God's very name is plural, therefore God is more than one person. But here is the problem. That argument on its own does not hold. Elohim takes singular verbs throughout Genesis 1. God created singular, God said singular. God saw singular, a plural noun doing singular things.

4:25And it is not only the God of Israel who is called Elohim. The Philistine God, Degon, is called an Elohim. The Moabite God, Kemosh, is called an Elohim. If the plural noun alone proved the Trinity, it would prove that Degon is also a Trinity. The argument fails. We are not going to build this case on an argument that does not hold. We are going to find what does. Genesis chapter 1, verse 26. Then God said, let us make man in our image according to our likeness. Plural pronouns. Us. Hour. But then verse 27 says, so God created man in his own image. Singular. His. Verse 26 is plural. Verse 27 is singular. Why? The most common alternative explanation is the Divine Council. Psalm 82, 1 Kings chapter 22, Job chapters 1 and 2, all describe a heavenly court where God presides among spiritual beings. And some scholars say God is speaking to that council in Genesis 1, 26. Let us make man.

5:40But the council has a limit. The Divine Council never creates anything. The Divine Council never shares the Divine image. No where in the Hebrew Bible is a created being invited to participate in the act of creation. And humanity is made in God's image, not in the image of angels. Something else is happening in that verse. And the text does not explain what it is, not yet. But there is another verse, the most famous verse in all of Judaism, that everyone brings to this debate. Deuteronomy chapter 6, verse 4. The Shema. Here, O Israel, why HWH our God, why HWH is one. You may have heard this argument. The Hebrew word for one in the Shema is Ekad, which means a compound unity, like one flesh in Genesis 2.24, where two become the same. And the Hebrew word for absolute singularity is Yachid, which God did not use. Therefore the argument goes, the Shema itself contains the Trinity. It is a popular argument, and it is not as strong as people think.

6:54HWH is used throughout the Hebrew Bible in ways that have nothing to do with plurality. One day, one man, one place. The word itself does not demand compound unity. It simply means one. So what does the Shema actually say? This is the part no one talks about. The Shema is not a statement about God's internal structure. It is not a metaphysics lecture about what God is made of. It is a loyalty oath. YHWH our God, why HWH alone. It tells Israel who to worship, not what God is. It was written to a nation surrounded by polytheism, and its message is simple. There is one God, and His name is YHWH, worship Him and Him alone. Both sides, trinitarians and anti-trinitarians, have been arguing the wrong verse for centuries. The Shema does not prove the Trinity, but it does not disprove it either.

7:55It is silent on God's inner life. It never tells you what God is like on the inside. It tells you He is the only God, and that your loyalty belongs to Him alone. The question is not whether the Shema says God is three. The question is whether anything else in the Hebrew Bible does. God is one, but He has never been alone. Genesis chapter 18, YHWH appears to Abraham at the oaks of Monterey. The text does not say an angel appeared. It does not say a messenger appeared. Genesis 18 verse 1 says, YHWH appeared to Abraham. God Himself. Three visitors arrive. Abraham runs to meet them. He bows to the ground. He calls them My Lord. Adonai, singular, not My Lords. Singular, three figures standing before Him, and Abraham addresses them as one. He prepares a meal. He kills a calf. He brings bread and curds and milk. He stands under a tree while they eat.

9:01And then one of them speaks. And the text identifies Him as YHWH. He promises Abraham a son, Sarah laughs, and YHWH says, is anything too hard for YHWH? Genesis 18 verse 14. Then two of the three go on towards Sodom. One stays behind. The one who stays is God. And Abraham does something extraordinary. He stands before YHWH and negotiates. Face to face. For the lives of the people in that city, he bargains God down from 50 righteous people to 45, then to 40, then 30, then 20, then 10. And then YHWH leaves. And what happens next changes everything. Genesis chapter 19 verse 24. Then YHWH rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah from YHWH out of the heavens. Read that again. Slowly. YHWH on the ground. The one Abraham had been speaking to face to face.

10:07Reigning fire from YHWH in heaven. Two persons. Both called by God's personal covenant name. In the same sentence, in the same verse. In the same Bible that has been sitting in your hands since the day you first opened it. This is not a Christian interpretation forced onto a Jewish text. This is what the Hebrew says, YHWH on the ground. YHWH in the heavens. Two. And both are called by the name that belongs to God alone. That verse has been there from the beginning. And almost no one stops to ask what it means. Because this is not the only place it happens. This is Matt Rogers from Los Cultures. This is Matt Rogers in Bowen Yang. There is a figure who appears throughout the Old Testament called the Angel of Y H W H. And this figure does things that only God can do. He appears to haggar in the wilderness, a runaway slave, a lone desperate. And he speaks to her. And she says, I have seen God. Genesis chapter 16, verse 13. She is the first person in the Bible to give God a name. El Roy, the God who sees. And the one she saw was the Angel of Y H W H. He speaks to Moses from a burning bush. And the text says, God called to him from within the bush. Exodus chapter 3, verse 4.

13:17The Angel of Y H W H is in the bush. And yet it is God who speaks. The Angel and God are the same figure. He appears to Manoa and his wife to announce the birth of Samson. And Manoa says, we have seen God. Judges chapter 13, verse 22. The pattern is consistent. This figure is sent by God. He speaks as God. He is identified as God. He accepts worship. And he is worshipped as God. And yet he is distinct from the God who sends him. He is not the Father because the Father is the one who sent him. He is a second person, carrying God's name, exercising God's authority, and receiving God's worship. Now, not every angel in the Old Testament is this figure. Many are ordinary messengers. The claim is not that every malloc is God. The claim is narrower. And that is what makes it stronger. There is one specific figure who carries God's name, speaks God's words, and is called God.

14:27And he is not the same person as the God who sends him. And there is one more passage that must be laid on the table before we go further. Psalm 110, verse 1. David, the King of Israel, wrote this Psalm. And David calls someone, my Lord, that Lord is not Y, H-W-H, because Y, H-W-H is the one speaking. And yet this Lord is invited to sit at Y, H-W-H's right hand on God's own throne, sharing God's own authority in God's own presence. Who is this person who sits down next to God? Leave that question open. The answer is coming. But not yet. Y, H-W-H on the ground. Y, H-W-H in heaven. An angel who is God but is sent by God.

15:27A Lord who sits at God's right hand. God is one, but he has never been alone. But everything we have seen so far was scattered, embedded in narratives, tucked inside Psalms, spread across centuries. Something happened 700 years before Christ that brought it into the open. And it happened in a vision that changed everything. Daniel, chapter 7. The prophet Daniel receives a vision of heaven itself. And what he sees is extraordinary. Verse 9. In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the ancient of days and was led into his presence.

16:42He was given authority, glory, and sovereign power. All peoples, nations, and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. Read that carefully. This son of man comes with the clouds. He receives worship, and his dominion is everlasting. Now here is what most people miss. In the entire Old Testament, writing the clouds is, why H. W. H. is exclusive action. No one else does it. No prophet rides the clouds. No angel rides the clouds. No king rides the clouds. Only God. Deuteronomy 33. Verse 26. There is no one like God who rides across the heavens to help you, and on the clouds in His majesty. Psalm 68. Verse 4. Sing to God, extoll him who rides on the clouds. Why H. W. H. is his name. Psalm 104. Verse 3. He makes the clouds his chariot.

17:51Isaiah 19. Verse 1. See, why H. W. H. rides on a swift cloud. The clouds are God's chariot. The clouds are why H. W. H. is exclusive transport. And in Daniel chapter 7, a second figure is writing them. He is doing what only why H. W. H. does. He receives pelash, the aramaic word for divine worship. Not respect, not admiration, not honor given to a servant, worship. The same worship given to the ancient of days himself. His dominion is everlasting. The same word used for God's own eternal reign. His kingdom will never be destroyed. The same permanence attributed to God's own throne. This figure is not an angel. This figure is not a human king. This figure is doing everything why H. W. H. does, writing the clouds, receiving worship, reigning forever. And He is doing it alongside the ancient of days. Two figures, both divine, one vision. And this was not a Christian discovery. Jewish scholars, before Jesus was ever born, saw the problem.

19:05Rabbi Alan Seagal's landmark research documents that pre-Christian Judaism already had a theology of two divine figures, based on Daniel 7, Genesis 1924, and other passages. The rabbis called it the Two Powers in Heaven. It was Jewish. It was pre-Christian. It was part of the theological conversation for centuries before a single church council ever sat down. The rabbis later declared this theology heretical, but they only did so after the Christians adopted it. The idea of a second divine person in the Hebrew Bible is older than the church. And now, we come to the courtroom. The one promised from the very first minute of this video. Mark chapter 14 verses 61 and 62. Jesus stands before the Sanhedrin, the highest religious court in Israel. It is night. The trial is illegal by their own laws. The high priest stands, and he asks the question directly. Are you the Messiah, the son of the blessed one?

20:15Every person in that room holds their breath. And Jesus answers with one sentence that uses two Old Testament passages into a single claim. You will see the son of man sitting at the right hand of power and coming with the clouds of heaven. Daniel 7 verse 13. The cloud rider. The one who rides YHWH's exclusive transport. Psalm 110 verse 1. The one who sits at God's right hand. The Lord that David called my Lord, combined. In one claim, under oath, before the Supreme Court of Israel. In a single breath, Jesus claimed to be both figures, the one on the throne, and the one on the clouds. The high priest tears his robes. The verdict is immediate. Guilty of blasphemy. Worthy of death. But here is what most people never realize. Claiming to be the Messiah was not blasphemy. A century later, a man named Simon Bar Kokpa claimed to be the Messiah, Rabbi Akiva endorsed him publicly, and nobody tore their robes. Nobody charged him with blasphemy.

21:31Messiahship was a political claim. It was dangerous, but it was not a capital offense against God. The blasphemy was the sitting. Jesus told the highest religious court in Israel that he was the one who would sit on God's throne and ride on God's clouds. He claimed to be the second power. The divine figure of Daniel 7. The Lord of Psalm 110. He claimed equality with God, not in vague terms, not in philosophical language, but in the exact scriptural categories that the Jewish leaders understood better than anyone alive. That is what tore the robes. That is what triggered the death sentence. This is the courtroom. This is the sentence. And this is not the only passage where the Old Testament reveals more than one divine person in the same scene. Isaiah, chapter 6. The prophet sees the Lord on his throne. The Seraphim cry, holy, holy, holy. Three times. God says, who will go for us? plural. And the New Testament identifies every person in that room. The Apostle John says Isaiah saw Jesus' glory in that throne room. John, chapter 12, verse 41.

22:52And Paul says the Holy Spirit was the one who spoke through Isaiah, Acts chapter 28, verses 25 through 27. Three persons, all identified by name in the New Testament, in one throne room, in one vision, 700 years before Christ. For 4,000 years, it was scattered. A plural name here. A double, YHWH there. Then, on an ordinary day on the bank of an ordinary river, God did something He had never done before. He showed all three at once. The Jordan River. A crowd stands on the bank. John the Baptist is way steep in the water and he has been baptizing people all day. Then Jesus steps in, John lowers him beneath the surface. And when he rises, everything changes. The heavens tear open, not part tear. And from that opening, the Spirit of God descends, not as wind, not as fire, not as thunder, as a dove. Slowly, visibly, landing on the sun.

26:04And then, a voice, not from the crowd, not from the water, from heaven itself. The Father speaks. This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 3.16-17. Three persons, visible, simultaneously. The Son in the water. The Spirit in the air. The Father in the voice. Not one person switching between roles. Not one God wearing three masks. Not a force and an energy and a voice. Three persons, present at the same moment in the same scene. Doing three different things. The Son in the water. The Spirit descending. The Father speaking. God is one, but He has never been alone. You have watched the evidence build. You have seen God show Himself in a garden, in a fire, in a vision, on a river. Now you deserve what you came here for. Who are they? Let the text answer. The Father is the source.

27:111 Corinthians 8.6. Says, from whom are all things. Everything originates from the Father. He is the beginning of every divine action. The Father is the sender. He sends the Son into the world. John 3.16. Galatians 4.4. He sends the Spirit to the church. John 14.26. Every divine mission begins with the Father. And the Father is the one no one has ever seen. John 1.18. No one has seen God at any time. 1 Timothy 6.16. He dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. Every visible appearance of God in the Old Testament. Every theophany, every burning bush, every figure who stood before Abraham at Mamray. Every angel of YHWH who spoke to Hegar and to Manoa was not the Father. It was the Son. The Father has always remained invisible, known only through the Son who reveals Him.

28:23And the Father is the one Jesus prays to. John 17.5. Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world existed. The Son does not pray to Himself. He speaks to another person, a person who shared glory with Him before anything was created, before the stars, before the earth, before time itself. The Son is the Word. John 1.1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Two truths in one sentence. With God, that is distinction. Two persons face to face. Was God, that is unity. The same essence, the same nature, the same substance. The Word is not a lesser God. The Word is not a God. The Word is God, with the full undiminished nature of God Himself. The Son is the visible expression of the invisible Father.

29:29Colossians 1.15. He is the image of the invisible God. Hebrews 1.3. The exact imprint of His nature. The Father is unseen. The Son makes Him known. He is the face of the faceless God, the voice of the silent source, the visible radiance of an invisible glory. In John 10.30, I and the Father are one. The Greek word for one here is hen, neuter. It means one thing, one essence, one substance. If Jesus meant one person, He would have used His masculine. He did not. He is not saying, I am the Father. He is saying, I am the same thing the Father is. The same nature, the same God. The Jews standing around Him understood exactly what He was claiming. They picked up stones, not because He claimed to be the Messiah, because He claimed to be God.

30:32And then Hebrews 1.8. The Father speaks directly to the Son and says, your throne, O God, is forever and ever. God the Father calls the Son God. There is no ambiguity. There is no metaphor. The Father looks at the Son and says, you are God. But if that is true and the text says it is, then what about the verses where Jesus says the opposite? John 14.28. The Father is greater than I. Mark 13.32. No one knows the day or hour, not even the Son, but only the Father. 1 Corinthians 15.28. The Son will be made subject to the Father. If Jesus is equal to God, why does He say these things? Because there is a difference between who He is and what He chose to do. Philippians 2.6.8. Who, being in very nature, God, did not consider equality with God, something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

31:48In His divine nature, equal, in His voluntary human mission, submitted, He did not stop being God. He chose to lay down the privileges of God. The Father is greater in role, not in nature. And when the mission is complete, the glory He had before the world existed returns in full. And the Holy Spirit is not a force. The Spirit is not God's energy. The Spirit is not an influence or a power or an abstract presence. The Spirit is a person, and that person is God. Jesus calls the Spirit another helper in John 14 verse 16. The Greek word for another is alon, another of the same kind, not heteroan, another of a different kind. Jesus says the Spirit is alon, the same kind of being as Himself, fully divine, fully personal. And in John 16 verse 13, the Greek uses the masculine pronoun echinos, he, for the Spirit, overriding the neuter noun, numa. The grammar itself fights to make the Spirit personal. He is not an it, he is not a thing, he is a he.

33:07The Spirit does what only a person can do. He speaks, Acts chapter 13 verse 2. He forbids, Acts chapter 16 verses 6 and 7. He appoints leaders, Acts chapter 20 verse 28. He distributes gifts as he wills, verse Corinthians chapter 12 verse 11. He can be lied to, Acts chapter 5 verse 3. He can be grieved, Ephesians chapter 4 verse 8. Verse 30. He intercedes for believers with groaning, too deep for words. Romans chapter 8 verse 26. Forces do not grieve, forces do not will, forces do not forbid, forces do not intercede, only a person does these things, and this person is God. He approves it in two verses, Acts chapter 5 verse 3. He tells Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit? Verse 4, you have not lied to men, but to God.

34:11Lied to the Spirit, lied to God, same act, same person, the Holy Spirit is God, and he was there from the very beginning. Genesis chapter 1 verse 2. The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters, Ruaq Elohim. He is not a New Testament addition, he has been there since verse 2 of the Bible, since before light, since before land, since before life. The Father, the invisible source who sends, the Son, the visible Word who reveals, the Spirit, the active person who indwells, three persons, one God, all three defined, all three divine, all three present from the beginning, and now the circle closes. 1 Corinthians chapter 8 verse 6. Paul, a Pharisee, trained under Gamaliel, a man who knew the Shema before he could walk, writes this.

35:12For us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. Read that again. Paul has taken the Shema, why HWH our God, why HWH is one, and restructured it. One God, the Father, that is the Shema, one Lord Jesus Christ, that is Jesus, placed inside the Shema itself. Inside the most sacred confession of monotheism in the history of Israel, Paul did not abandon monotheism, he completed it. One God, now understood as Father, Son, and Spirit, not two gods, not three gods, one God, whose oneness is richer, deeper, and more relational than anyone had imagined. And no apostle corrected him, no letter was written to challenge it, no counsel was called to reject it. The church received it because the truth had been in the text from the beginning.

36:18It took three centuries for someone to give it a name. The Dydash, the earliest post-apostolic document, written sometime between 70 and 100 AD, instructs believers to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son. And of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, one generation after the apostles, no debate, no counsel vote, just practice. Ignatius of Antioch, writing around 110 AD, whom the early church remembered as a student of the Apostle John, calls Jesus our God in His letters, repeatedly, casually. As if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Tertullian, around 200 AD, became the first person to use the Latin word Trinitas, Trinity. Three persons, one substance. He did not invent a doctrine, he named one that the church had believed for 170 years before anyone found a word for it.

37:23And if someone tells you the word Trinity is not in the Bible, neither are the words monotheism, incarnation, or Bible. The church did not invent the reality, they gave it a name. Then came the crisis. A priest in Alexandria named Areas began teaching that the Son was a created being, the first and greatest of God's creations, but not eternal, not equal, not truly God, in the way the Father is God. Areas had a slogan, he said of the Son, there was a time when he was not. It was elegant, it was simple, it made the math easier, and it contradicted everything the apostles had written. In 325 AD, the Council of Nicaea was called. Bishops gathered from across the Roman Empire, and some of them carried the scars of persecution, men who had been tortured for the faith they were now being asked to define.

38:24And these bishops, not politicians, not emperors, bishops, chose one word to settle it, Homo Uciós, of one substance. The Son is the same substance as the Father, not Homo Uciós, of similar substance, same, not similar. One Greek letter, the Iota, separated truth from Heresy, Constantine wanted unity, he did not dictate theology, the bishops debated, the text decided. And what the Trinity rejects is as important as what it affirms, because throughout history people have tried to make the Trinity simpler than it is, and every simplification has produced a Heresy. Modalism says God is one person wearing three masks, Father at one time, Son at another, Spirit at another. He changes modes like an actor changes costumes, but at the baptism all three are present simultaneously.

39:27The Son stands in the water while the Father speaks from heaven, while the Spirit descends as a dove. Three, at the same time, the Son prays to the Father throughout the Gospels, you do not pray to yourself. Arionism says the Son is a created being, the first creation of God, but a creation nonetheless, the highest angel, the first thing God ever made. But John 1 verse 3 says, all things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. Read that logic carefully. All things that were made were made through Him. If He made all things, He cannot be a made thing. He is on the wrong side of the equation to be a creature. Trithism says there are three separate gods who cooperate, like three members of a committee, but the Shema still stands. Why HWH are God, why HWH is One? One essence, One God.

40:33Three persons, sharing that one divine essence completely and equally. Not three gods in a partnership. One God in three persons. The Trinity is none of these. The Trinity is One God, three persons, One essence. Each person fully God, not three gods, not one person wearing masks, not a created being promoted to divinity. One God who has existed in eternal relationship, father, son and spirit, from before the foundation of the world, and the filioque, whether the spirit proceeds from the father alone or from the father and the son. This question divided the church in 1054, and it remains unresolved. Scripture does not settle it. We say so honestly, and we move on. Because what the Trinity means is bigger than any one debate, strip away every created thing. Remove the stars, remove the earth, remove every angel and every human soul.

41:37Go back before the beginning, before Genesis 1, verse 1, before let there be light, before anything existed at all. What remains is not silence, what remains is a father who has always spoken, a son who has always been the word, a spirit who has always been the breath between them. Before there was a universe to fill, before there was a single soul to save, before there was anything at all, the father loved the son, the son loved the father, and the spirit was the eternal bond of that love, not love as a concept, not love as a command, love as a relationship, living eternal before time began. God did not create because He was lonely. He was never lonely. He created because love, by its very nature, overflows. It cannot be contained. It spills outward. And when it spilled, it made you.

42:41The Trinity was never a math problem to be solved. It is not a puzzle for theologians to argue over in a classroom. It is the reason love exists. It is the reason relationship exists. It is the reason you were made. Because a God who has always existed in relationship, made you for relationship too. If you were ever told this doctrine was too complicated for you to understand, you were lied to. It was never complicated. It was hidden. And now you have seen it. God is one.
