2026 domination as in what team USA expects to do during the world baseball

classics which gets underway this evening in Tokyo Japan domination as in

what their offense look like in an exhibition game yesterday against the San

Francisco Giants cruising if you can use that word to describe a 15 to 1 win

over the Giants the world baseball classic comes on the heels of the

Olympics in Milan Cortina and the excitement that surrounds the Winter Olympics

with the showing of the United States specifically the hockey team both men's

and women's going for gold toothless and happy making appearances either in DC

or not at Rockefeller Plaza or not all the sudden team USA gets together and we

see a couple of things happen first video is all over the internet cameras

allowed of Aaron judge the captain of team USA giving a speech when team USA got

together which just happened a couple days ago quick side note the way it works is

players go to spring training with their MLB teams then they appear with their

world baseball classic teams they play a few exhibition games and then so

example the USA will play the Rockies today get on a plane go to Houston and

all the sudden group play begins so it's not as though the teams have spent the

entire team of spring training together so the team USA gets together Aaron

judge stands up gives a speech and gets pilloried he's not a leader he doesn't

give good speeches Michael Phelps was there giving speeches a quick note on

speeches in general by players as much as I'd like to believe that life is the

movies where you have one of these great motivational speeches that precedes

teams getting on to the floor and all of a sudden performing win one for the

Gipper yes of course there are coaches who really can get you going there are

players who can get you going but the things that happen in a clubhouse before a

big game or when a team's getting together before a big series they're not as

ra ra as you would believe there's a lot of burping and farting and

jocular behavior but Aaron judge was trying to get people in his clubhouse on

team USA which is stacked by the by back to that in a second trying to just say

hey let's meet the moment so it got me thinking what's the moment when Rob

Manford asked Michael Hill to be the general manager of team USA there was a

pretty clear directive be the GM and win the gold medal when it was decided

that Mark Dorosa would be the manager he had been the manager prior I've

been a part of an interview of Mark Dorosa's manager and he is extremely

qualified really good in the clubhouse no reason why it can't be a big lead

manager when Michael Hill and the commissioner's office approached

American players to play for team USA it did not go

according to reports swimmingly even though the team is stacked

Aaron judge came on his team captain because it's complicated

it's complicated mostly for pictures in some examples for position players

and we've seen that complication manifest itself when Coco's team is providing

the starting pitcher Nolan John McLean for the finals

should the team USA get there in Miami in a couple weeks

so Aaron judge is put on the team and you've got Cal Raleigh of course and Schwarber

and Harper and Whitt it is top to bottom Bucston you could just go up and down the

lineup and you realize that you can put together an all-star team

with team USA players and so when they're asked to play the pitches

this is really important for our country it's really important because we're

wearing USA on the jersey this is patriotism

you know we're in the middle the beginning of a war we're coming off the

Olympic golds this is could be a prelude and pre-view

to 2028 in Los Angeles do players view the gold

with the W for the W World Baseball Classic as they do for the Olympics

there are teams who have in the past Dominican

Japan team USA there's always been the feeling

around ownership and around executives and around players that

there was some guilt associated with not accepting to play

but it was really not a huge deal to accept and pictures were not all that

interested in pitching and teams were not all that interested in allowing

their pictures to pitch this year has been a complete change

though the fighting as we documented on this show with scuba who is only

gonna pitch in pool play against great Britain and only for a managed

number of pitches the difference is that there is big

business involved this year with the WBC when I was just in Tokyo

there were billboards everywhere because Netflix has the broadcast rights

and there was there was Otani there was Yamamoto there was huge huge commercial

profile for the WBC around the city as a matter of fact when Australia plays

Japan this week there are it sold out you cannot get a ticket

it is the type of environment that you would expect

from a team that's the defending champion and from a team that the pressure

to win the world baseball classic on behalf of that country is something

that would drive each row to like stomach pains

anecdotally because it was that important to win for the US it's never been that

way why now why is this the year when it's required for the team to win from

the United States where they're favored to win where the players are all

saying the right things about how it feels to have USA and the Jersey

what is different is it where we are as a country right now no not in my mind

is it because of what happened with the hockey team no not in my mind but those

are really good tent pole arguments to have

the reason why it feels different this year is that as we go into collective

bargaining as these players think about the possibility

of being asked to be on the Olympic team in 2028 as these players are wherever

they are within their long-term contracts or in arbitration the

business of Olympic gold is second place right now

that's how high up it is compared to their regular contract which will be

number one world baseball classic gold is not on the podium right now

in terms of business for the players or for Major League Baseball

but if the US wins and all of a sudden you are going into the Olympics in

28 and then World Baseball Classic in 2030 when you are going into new

broadcast negotiations after 2028 what the WBC can provide to baseball

is another tent pole of another arrow in the quiver for Noah

to go out and negotiate a deal for the players they have noticed

correctly so that Olympic gold has commercial value

in a way world baseball classic gold simply doesn't have right now

the world baseball classic was started when baseball was basically not going

to be in the Olympics as we've discussed I was in the room I we were a part of

the vote of how it all came to happen when the world baseball classic

started an alternative and the possibility of making it into like FIFA's

World Cup in soccer the possibility of showing the

Olympic Committee what they're missing by not having

baseball all of those things existed and now it's

growing into this entity that's a revenue driving entity but not yet at the

level locally in America that it would be if MLB were a part of the Olympics

the difference of course is MLB owns the World Baseball Classic they would not

own the broadcast rights for the Olympics however

the halo effect the ripple effect that would create that would be created

by having this be the start of a four year run that would include the Olympics

that would include the next WBC and that would include the next broadcast

set of agreements that makes this so critical so the US goes into it

and I will say that they are favored they ought to be favored

because they are highly incentivized do I predict they will win the tournament

when I look at their starting pitching I've got some concerns now you've got

schemes he has the ability to pitch a pool game

and the quarter finals you got Logan Webb ready to go

in the semi finals Nolan McLean in the finals is it enough to get

through Japan I guess we'll wait to see not ready to make a prediction yet

of the alleged steroid use or an affirmation

and then a suspension then the announcement

and about an hour before the announcement the team gets called

how do i know it happened to me that's how it works

we don't hear about suspensions as a team and you don't hear about it as the

public until the process has played out

and the suspension is going to happen

remember a player can accept the suspension without appealing

or can appeal and then wait and the player gets to play

during the appeal if you have a positive test during the regular season

you get to play while you appeal and nobody knows the difference

now you may not be playing well you may be totally distracted by what's going

on in your life but the reality is you've tested positive

and again and again and it's being appealed and then we'll get back to you

and the team is just sitting there putting your name in the lineup

like everything is butterflies and unicorns

in this instance yesterday we got word of the suspension rumor suspension

of pro far and yet we weren't positive whether or not there was going to be an

appeal because pro far seemed to indicate by the way i'm going to appeal this

well if he's going to appeal it that means that what's is he suspended

without the appeal you have to have the appeal first

and so what's happening is he will ask the union to file a grievance

on this issue so the subtext is that something else is going on

that there is some problem with the chain of custody of the sample

if that sounds familiar it should yes i'm talking to you Ryan Braun

do you remember that oh man that FedEx got opened up

somebody replaced my pay or spilled it or didn't put it in the proper fridge

and it was total horosaki but if you're asking the union to file a grievance

as opposed to filing an appeal unless that has been misreported

which i don't know that it has been i'm not independently obviously reporting

that it's a grievance versus an appeal that's part of the process of a

p-e-d positive test but why is this different

well pro far 33 years old heading into the last year of his deal

if the appeal is upheld to the extent there's appeal the suspension happens

he's missing a full year remember the players agreed to discipline

for performance enhancing drugs half a year the first time one year the second

time and a lifetime ban the third time the players

agreed to this they all know we reiterated with the players

at every level at every service time at every point in our

organization this is what you're risking if you get caught

not if you do it we say if you get caught i would never stand in front of a

group of players and say you're risking suspension if you

do it because i don't want to pretend that i'm as

ahead of it as these players and the agents and the people who get together

and have these players do things which in many

case are needed to get through a season and we acknowledge that fact

but i talk about getting caught for pro far two have been caught twice and

there are not many players who are in this position it has been a system

that has worked in terms of in theory deterrence but more likely in practice

the realization that the juice is not worth squeeze at these higher levels as

the money continues to get bigger how does this end well it ends with pro far

totally screwing the braves if you're going to be out for the year

let it happen early so the braves can reallocate the money

right now the braves in terms of replacing pro far in the middle of the lineup

he could have batted second maybe third we're talking a top of the lineup guy

for a team that's expected to compete in October

don't forget pro far was the one who had that great season in San Diego and

then signed the free agent deal with lanta three years that guy

my frustration on this topic is that i don't understand

self sabotage in any other arena outside of my personal life

i don't understand why a player at a certain salary

would risk what they have so if you have an answer

i'm all ears if pro far when he finally talks other than just saying he appeals

has an answer i'm all ears panic that's how i feel right now

if i'm Andrew Friedman the president the Dodgers

i'm panicked i mean our team we have a problem

we are totally screwed we've got the guy who was the bull pen ace

wasn't sure we wanted to go and we said Dodgers Dodgers it's going to be the

Dodgers and then he goes to the Dodgers and then he's hurt and doesn't

pitch and then he's back for the postseason

is this ringing about and then he's out of the bull pen everything's good

and then he comes back and they're putting them back to being a starter which

he is because the Dodgers do load management for

starters so we'll see how many starts Sasaki gets

well yesterday he got absolutely shelled again

in his second spring training start and the Dodgers are in a full panic

they may release Sasaki they're looking at him and saying

you're not even worthy of being on our single aid team

not i have never seen a bunch of people panic more

and none of you are inside baseball yes it's true Sasaki gave up a grand slam

yes it's true he could not record an out and then was pulled

and then put back in the second ending which we'll talk about in a second

all of that's true it's true that on his first

outing of the season of spring training last week

that Dave Roberts the manager said you know I thought he was over throwing

I haven't seen that all spring it's probably just getting into live

competition maybe a little too bullish on his fastball

yada yada yada yapa yapa yapa

when we sit at a spring training game

and our starting ERA is 14 or an individual pitcher

who is expected to be part of our rotation is

absolutely horrible several things are going on

behind the scenes with pitchers that can contribute to performance in spring

training and actually sandy al contra came out and told you

that he got shelled because he was working on a new pitch

and that he wanted to try his sweeper and then he gave up a home run on a

sweeper the majority of pitchers use spring training to get their arm

ready and they are not going to show their

sequencing or best stuff during spring training

there is no reason to do that under any scenario

we're not looking at box scores during spring training

we are simply evaluating the readiness

of the players that we had planned to be on the team

and part of our team as they get ready for opening day

which is only 21 days from today

for the Yankees and Giants 22 days away

for the other 28 teams

so when the media meets with Dave Roberts after another shaky outing

he has to say I don't think there are concerns

there just has to be continued progression

I want to make sure that you're hearing what he's saying

because he is exactly telling you and it doesn't happen all the time

he's exactly telling you what the truth is about Sasaki

it's not and believe me we're dealing with things in that

sport they that's a dollar that did not exist a quarter of a century go

but the number of social media accounts the number of people who believe

they're in the industry who could be a coach in the industry

who are able to evaluate and point out frame by frame these content creators

well his leg kick used to be this and now it's that

his point was towed this way not that way

he's loading up on his swing one second later he's doing a tow tap

now he's not he's not getting his front leg down all of the stuff

that you're all coming up with and putting it on video

and try to say look is anyone paying attention to this

dudes we've had it forever and this is not me telling you

that I've had it I was the president of the team that wasn't my job

I wasn't the baseball guy but our baseball guys back in 2000

all the way through 2017 every year

they had all the video they had all the analysis

they knew exactly what each of our players was doing

they did not sit around on social media looking to see

oh I need some coaching help here nor did they learn anything from anything

written about by all the people who spend time writing about

major league baseball and his players now I don't want to sound like a

malcontent and I don't want to sound whole year than now

because I'm not either but the reason why there are people inside organizations

is that they're better than the people outside the organizations

I'm sorry it's just true so when you hear Dave Roberts tell you there's no

concerns he's echoing how the Dodgers feel

we know who's gonna start and we've lined up the pitching already

it doesn't mean they're pitching every five days you can't do that exact math

because sometimes we wouldn't do it that way sometimes we'd have pictures

pitch in games outside of camera range like on back fields

as they were getting ready for regular season so there's all sorts of things

that are happening it again we are just it's our job

it's what we are paid to do so when I watch Sasaki have what happened to him

I just say to myself okay I'm ignoring that completely

but MLB did make a concession that was asked for by baseball people

and it happened several years ago and it's getting more attention now because

more teams are using it so I just wanted you to be aware of it

that in spring training you can take out a picture in the middle of an

inning and then allow that picture to come back to start the next

inning clean that's what happened with Sasaki yesterday

they pulled him in the first inning when he couldn't get out of it and this

pitch count was high they put him on the bench they finished the inning

they go to bat and then when the Dodgers go back to the field

Sasaki comes out and pitches another inning

why why change that rule because what you protect against in spring

training as you're progressing the pitcher's arm strength is you're

protecting against that big pitch count inning due to

ineffectiveness that really does bother a pitching coach

and a GM far more than giving up 10 runs on 25 pitches

giving up one run on 35 pitches

is worse which is why spring training standings

spring training wins losses all the stats none of it

actually matters as much as we want you to believe it matters

as much as we want you to believe we'd like to win the grapefruit league and we'd

like to win the cactus league inside baseball front offices

Shalamei I'm reviewing Marty's Supreme I watched it

I don't know how to avoid this I don't know how to avoid

that when you build up your expectations to something all you're doing is sending

yourself up for failure you're sending yourself up for disappointment

I wanted Marty's Supreme to be the best movie I saw this year

I was so excited for Shalamei and for Softy and for Gwyneth Paltrow

on screen no matter how difficult it is to watch

you are seen this frenzy that almost makes your own brain slow down

if you've got a speedy brain Marty's Supreme is not

Marty's Supreme is about ping pong the same way forest gump is about ping pong

yes it's true there are phenomenal ping pong scenes

do I care the Timothy Shalamei who I have loved since love the Cooper's by

emerged victorious in its battle against the players association

while you have not read that there has been a settlement

while you have not seen an agreement and the start of the WNBA season

i am guaranteeing you that Adam silver and the other WNBA owners

will emerge victorious from this negotiation because the WNBA the players

association is an outright mess

just yesterday just yesterday Kelsey Plum and Breonna Stewart

wrote a letter to the players union executive director

a woman named Terry Jackson who's been there for years and has done

when in their mind a very good job wrote a letter basically saying

you don't talk to us quoting barrestries and

and kneel diamond you don't bring us flowers anymore

it used to be so natural for us to talk but used to be

don't count anymore what's going on here

Adam silver stands up and says there's a deadline in March 10th

you better get a deal done or we're not going to be able to

get the season underway and we're going to have a real problem

all of a sudden the players union seems fractured

first you get a story that comes out is now while they had voted

to approve a strike now there could be some dissension in the ranks

about whether or not they should call for a strike

there seems to be some dissension within the ranks about whether what

the WNBA is offering at the table should be accepted

in large part so that they can get their season going

there is absolute panic on behalf of the players

and when you know that you've got a problem within your union

there's one thing you can't do you can't let anyone else know that

because once the other side knows about the fracture

they stick their leg in it and they use one of those

expanders that opened your chest cavity and expose your beating heart

you certainly do not write a letter that you know is going to get leaked

for those of you who are going to complain about leaks

inside the industry the sports industry

every email we write every letter we write

every correspondence with a fan or with a commissioner or with a fellow owner

you are taught in president's school

it's public you have got to communicate with people as though you know

everyone is going to read it and you better put context in your communications

because left alone there could be room for misinterpretation

well this three-page letter did not leave room for misinterpretation

this three-page letter was expressing concerns about how the

head of the players association is not only negotiating the deal

but also communicating with the mass of union members

about what is going on ESPN received this

private communication and I'm about to shocked that today is Wednesday

because yesterday was Tuesday inside the letter

we are frustrated that we have not made more progress as we near the March

10th deadline game over do you know that March 10th is not a real deadline

I'm just going to make sure that we're clear about that

when Adam Silver stood up after the all-star game during his media

availability during all-star weekend and said and we have a deadline on March

10th or there could be a delay and there's going to be a real problem

the reason I smiled is that that day was pulled out of thin air

it was to create the need for an end day which creates urgency

because that sounds normal except the reason Adam Silver did it

is he thought to himself correctly so

if I finally put a deadline out there and I'm hearing some rumblings from my

insiders that could fracture this union

and it played out exactly as Adam Silver would want it

the union was forced to call a players meeting last night

according to sources that ESPN cited

the union now is going to address the issues raised in the letter

by Plum and Stewart it's like doing the snoopy dance if your management

and the union is getting together when we're this close to a potential

fake deadline of March 10th and they're getting together to discuss communication

it's so perfect that anyone who thinks

that the women players are going to make the progress that they thought they

were going to make because they had the leverage because of Caitlin Clark and

because of the greatness of the WMBA and Unrival is selling out semi-final

games at Berkeley Center and there's just all this excitement about it

I tried to tell you it was not at all relevant to the reality

so what happens now well at WMBA players get together

and they will decide once and for all how badly are they going to give in

if you are the WMBA management you are not

budging a millimeter from your current position

there is no reason because the other side is going to come right to you

it's going to meet you where you reside and then

you give a little nothing so the players can say hey we got the best deal we

can we got a little extra at the end the WMBA management can say

God were the good guys I don't want to hear from the public or from the media

that we are the face of corporate greed and evil we gave an extra month of

housing God do I love when you read about housing is one of the big issues

in this collective bar and agreement huge you have no idea it's the only thing

that matters give me a break what will happen is there's going to be an

agreement before I was concerned and I was not willing pretty much in any way

to tell you that there would be an agreement without a work stoppage or strike

that there would be an agreement and that it was possible the WMBA would miss a

season I was very concerned about the possibility of all that happening

that concern has washed away like worries on a beach when you've had a

lobotomy and you can't remember how crappy your life is going at the moment

I am so sure of this coming to an end that I am willing to do

a wait to see wait to see when I tell you something's gonna happen if it does

great if it doesn't okay wait to see we'll revisit it though
