The Yankees drop the series in San Diego as the outfield picture clears up

On today's show, I want to have a discussion about rivalries because I watched a game this weekend that made me hyped for a rivalry that I'm not part of and we're going to talk about why. The outfield picture clearing up a little bit because of injury and play from certain guys and people coming that we're going to talk about that because there's a lot going on in the outfield. But first, this is a fluky series. And what I mean by that is you lose Friday night's game with Paul Blackburn pitching. He's been nails basically all season. And then you lose Sunday's game because Garrett Cole was throwing bad in practice for the first time in a really long time. So it was just a very odd weekend for the Yankees.

2:04It's funny too because Cole gives up those runs in the first inning and then goes again with another run until I believe it was the sixth. But the in between he pitched really well. But still it's what you do when you go up the runs that winds up coming out to what your spinal stat line looks like. This series to me, I think we should all look at it as a harsh reminder of what a postseason series can look like. And this should inspire the fan base to push for them to one on the vision more than anything because this is exactly how a wild card series could play out where you could play someone who mathematically, statistically, the Yankees are better than the podgers. And you could easily lose a series to them just like this where a game on Friday, you're in the position you want to be. You have to lead your closes in the game. You get it to extra innings. You take a lead in extra innings and then you lose on a two run walkoff. Saturday you win the game and then Sunday you win a game where your ace doesn't necessarily have it and you want to lose in that way. It's not when you look back on these games in the series, they see this is not an awful

3:06series lost. They didn't not compete. They weren't not in these games. They lost the series two out of three. They were in these games. They played up with their opponent. It's not going to be ashamed of here. But settling for the wild card against likely Boston in the first round, it could wind up exactly like this. And this motivation of why you need to try and win the division at all costs. Right. Because the division, I'm going to spoonerize that. The division is still within reach. We've seen many fluky things happen in baseball where teams have lost considerable leads in only two weeks depending on if they go on a really bad run and the team behind them goes on a good run. Anything can happen. The Yankees are still. They still have four games left against the raise with a weak left in the season. If they are within striking distance, why even like why give up? There's no reason to give up. This would be nothing surprising to anybody if they came back and won this division. It would be it would be nothing short of anything we've seen before in baseball history.

4:07So I don't think that's it's not crazy. I think that way. Again, it'll put more emphasis and we'll talk about it more in segment three along with your your rivalry discussion. It'll put more emphasis on on this rocky series coming up here. You're significantly your 30 games right in this team than this team. You have to take care of business against those kind of teams. You just have to do it in the race. The problem that I have here is these the Yankees have not gone back into a swoon knock on wood. They haven't played poor baseball. They've played pretty well really since the trade deadline. The problem is the week where the raise play mediocre, which is what they've done the last week. The Yankees need to put their best baseball when the raise play mediocre baseball. The problem is whatever the raise tail off for a bit, the Yankees seem to do the same thing. And the Yankees play well. The raise went forward or row. So it's really been back and forth thing. But again, the Padres are not significantly better than the Yankees. Maybe they can play better than for a series at a time. They're not significantly better. These two teams are pretty evenly matched. And I think this series should be a root awakening for what a wild card the danger of a wild

5:10card series because this could happen. They easily could one pretty much all three games in this series, they say at least two out of three. And instead it wants to go in the way that it goes. And I'm not mad at this series. They should not be ashamed of losing two out of three to this Padres team. That's played a really good baseball also since the trade deadline. But the way you lost these games, it is a little frustrating when you want up, you know, looking at one of the ones that have happened. Well, let's go to, let's go to Friday because you mentioned this. What did you think of bringing in a bed and R1 was tied? Yeah, so I see what they're doing and it's, I don't necessarily agree with it, but it is more of a baseball analytical move nowadays where you bring in your clothes or even in a talk game because the goal is to get it to extras and not let them walk it off. I get it. Here's where I'll give a little pushbacks, they see. They're, they're record of play in extra innings, especially on the road is so bad that I don't know if the Yankees should be playing for extras at any time, especially on the road.

6:11Right. Wait, did they get a little confident there because they had a couple of extra innings? Yeah. Road and everything. Yeah, maybe we're turning this around. So maybe we can, well, remember, Friday's following Thursday's extra inning when it gets the angels. So maybe they're thinking that, okay, we could use the same strategy. My thing is, I'd rather use Blackburn in the bottom of the ninth when nobody's on base. Right. And use Bednar, my dominant strikeout arm would have run around second base because if the Yankees, this is the problems, they see with getting the ghost runner on the top of the tent inning, you're expected to score that run that run around second base is expected to score. So you're always expecting that. So to me, your closer who's more of a strikeout weapon makes more sense to put him in in the tent inning because he can strike guys out and not have to get that second runner score. That to me is what bothers me about that decision is it doesn't make any sense to put Bednar in the night. I get what you're doing getting it to extra innings. You're putting in your more dominant arm when no one's on base.

7:12Right. That to me was a little confusing because that was a big talking point that I saw on social media. Like people were mad about the loss, but they also were saying that stuff happens. Blackburn's been great all year. Why can't I think of his name? I'm picturing his name in my head, the guy who hit the home run. Oh, Luis Compionso. That's it. Thank you. Yeah. He's had a great year. Yeah. He went to some like schlub and it only goes down as one earned. So is he already only jumps to one seven two? He's had a great year, but like we've discussed this before many times on the show. Like you have to leave room for this kind of error. Like this stuff happens. Like you're both. Well, okay. You're both. I'm just going to be dominant. They're not going to go, you know, hitless for 30 shred innings. It's not going to happen. So this goes back to the discussion that we've been having the past three weeks. The Yankees had what five hits that game. Ben Rice had three Spencer Jones had the big one that put them up. And then he was excellent this series, by the way, like just side up there. Well, well, Ben Rice and Spencer Jones.

8:15And I think Luis Garcia had the other hits. So there's your other problem. Like the previous Friday where they only had three hits. One of them was a home run by Paul Goldschmidt. The other two were bass hits or something. But I can't even remember now. Ben Rice, three hits, but they won the game because of one home run and the pitching was able to shut the red socks down. But again, you can't expect the pitching to always shut down the other team. It's just the you can. Well, that's what happened, particularly on Friday night. Stacy is the pottery score in the bottom of the second. You answer on the top of the third and tie it. No one scores the rest of the game. And the Yankees idea is, all right, we're going to get it. We're going to score on the top of the tent. And then we're going to hold on for dear life and try to that's not an expectation. You can't play that way. And again, the bullpen has been so good that it's given them this idea that they can play that way. And always work out that way. And you have to leave margin for error. And that's what happened with Blackburn. It's no shame on what he's done this season. But you can't expect him to go out there and have another dominant performance. And he didn't.

9:16And they lost the game. You know, again, there's no shame in losing the series. It's just like to me, this should be a root awakening of what a playoff a wild card series could look like. You could be in every game competitive playing with that team and still want up losing because sometimes the cards don't fall the way you want them to. All right. Well, let's talk about the middle game because that's the one game they won and the one game they won. And Ben Rice was unbelievable. God on base every time he was up Carlos Rodón looked good, gave up the one run. The bullpen was great. It was like a solid game for them. Too bad for all three were like Saturday. Another game where Spencer Jones does something too. He had an unbelievable weekend. This is one of those two. This did a lot for Carlos Rodón's confidence. We only because you scored the four runs early. You get the four runs in the second inning. We've talked about many times before and we can't understate it. But Carlos Rodón goes out for the bottom of the third and they're already up five nothings. They see like what that does for a starter's confidence where he knows that you can pitch that in post games.

10:18He's actually talked about that. Yeah. Well, you can, but it allows you to pitch more aggressively and go after guys because okay, if a guy gets on top of a fit of a breaking bowl and drives it out to deep center, it's a solo shot. All right. You have more room to play with. Whereas opposed to a one run lead in a tie game, you're on pins and needles, trying to hold on to that lead. So there's a big difference in this. And you just saw it in this game's days. He's like, they were, you know, they allowed Rodón to pitch his way and then five innings, two hits, one earn seven strikeouts. Like that's a really good performance room. And it just, yeah. And he's your four in a playoff series right now, by the way. So like if you put it that way, like that's really dominant number four. So, you know, you were able to get through this. And by the way, Lumbar having a sack fly in this game too, really good to see him back and contributing in the lineup. Yeah. Yeah. It was good to see the start from Rodón. It is kind of amazing to think of the fact that he is the four right now when you look

11:19at everything with the way that's 30 million, 30 million dollar number four starters. Very good. Yeah. Not bad. All right. Have a mini Machado by the way. I know how about many Machado having a great series. It's almost like a deal they could offer them in 2017 would have been a nice. Yeah. Yeah. This goes into the segment doesn't annoy you. Doesn't annoy you when you see the two of them and we'll talk about them in segment three, but doesn't annoy you when you see that. Yeah. I was just literally going to say that because in segment three spoiler alert, I'm going to talk about the fillies and the braves and watching. I mean, Bryce Harper had some issues in Sunday's game. We'll talk about that. But watching Bryce Harper is a filly and Mani Machado as a Padre will always anger me. And we're, we're, by the way, we're, we're always complaining as Yankee fans about these long term contracts and I would never age as well and all these kind of things. They are now both deep into their contracts and they are still performing at elite levels. Just keep that in mind, by the way. Machado makes 30 million a year. That's less than road on. Yeah. All right. So mentioned it at the top. The outfield picture is looking clearer, more clear.

But let's talk about the injury that came down late in the week last week.

15:33Trent Grisham goes down with the injury. Now, I did just say it in the last commercial read. Me and you were a bull fun record saying that we thought they would keep Spencer Jones and the Major leagues regardless of what happened when judges back because of how well Spencer Jones is played. Trent Grisham going down made their decision to heck of a lot easier and you saw to Minges playing in the series because of that. It's a great two hamstring strain. It's his third hamstring injury in the last three years in the last two years. I know they ruled me out for the rest of the regular season. Nothing as much of a left on the regular season. I would lean to things. They see he's probably done for the rest of the season. That's including the post season. These are injuries that are super finicky Stacy and to be honest with you, Spencer Jones is a good enough fielder where I don't think you could afford to risk having Grisham in there for a playoff game. Like what if there's what if there's a ball in the gap that he needs to get to and as he's running towards his hamstring locks, he doesn't get to it.

16:33That's the difference in the series. I don't think you can risk something like that. Or the hamstring hamstrings him so much that he can't run after a ball and the ball goes beyond that. That could go, you know, that if he puts a ball in the gap and he needs to stretch that double into a triple, a single into a double and he can't make it because the injury there's a lot of factors that go into this. Plus hamstring injuries like like like caps are super finicky like you never really you can try and test it up. But you never know when it's fully healthy again. Um, well, I was actually worried about a bellinger when he ran out that one ball yesterday. Yes, me too. And I was like, I was looking for the grimace and I didn't see it. I was like, who? Cause you know, that's the last thing the Yankees need. But this, this is one of those things where a grade two schrin. It's not necessarily a, it's not what they called it the last time. Remember the last time when he had the hamstring injury, they kind of down put it like they usually do instead. It wasn't that big of a deal. It wasn't a huge hamstring injury and usually what it is a big deal. Usually when it is a big deal, they'll say what grade it is. They didn't say that last time and he still missed the significant amount of time.

17:35It's about a month. So now they're announcing it's a grade two and there's what three weeks left in the season. Yeah. And I'm not sure if he's going to be back in any time this year. I think he's likely maybe done as an Yankee. Hmm. And I'll be interesting. It'll be interesting. Like even if, even if say they make it a few rounds into the playoffs and he's feeling better, I don't think he's starting. I think maybe he would be a bench option, but I don't think he's starting. Well, let's be real too with, with how good Spencer Jones has played now. And it's been about a month where he's been a consistent major leagueer where he's had good at bats, productive at bats. He's hitting like 245 now, which I mean, for what was projected and what he looked like at the beginning of the year, that's a really good average. Stacy, I don't see an and he's a great field. It's like average. Yeah. In baseball. No one's hitting that well. And by the way, he's producing one is his scoring position. Yes.

18:35I just, I don't know the argument for when Jones gets back. What is the argument for keeping him out of the lineup and putting Grisham in above him? This, this Trent Grisham saga, I guess, from last off season to now, has just really not worked out in every way imaginable. The between the qualifying offer and how this season's gone, his numbers are drastically down, his fielding numbers have been really down. He's been, now this is too I else since this year. Here's the thing. We could see this, like we knew this because we knew the Trent Grisham wasn't really what he was in 2025. He also saw his defense declining. How come we all saw that and the Yankees didn't and they didn't have to offer the qualifying offer. Like I know some people were like, oh, they offered him offered it thinking he wasn't going to why wouldn't he take it? Of course, he's going to take it. We knew it was going to take it. Right now Spencer Jones has nine home runs, which I think is below his projected, I guess,

19:36careers because of how many hit in the minors. But 31 RBIs now. And he's, remember, he started off his career and out with not a lot of RB, I production. 31 RBIs now. Here's what the number that really jumps up the page, Stacy. He's a 767 OPS. Yeah. Like he's, he's, and I think this is one of those things and I'm not throwing shade of people, but this is one of those things where if you're watching the team intently every single day, you realize what Jones has done. But if you're not, if you're not watching this on a daily basis focused and you hear us talk about it, you, you, you kind of perk your eyes up and go, wow, he's actually playing that well. Yeah. He's been really good, Stacy and, and you know, by the way, at three 20 on base percentage two, like he's a better player than he's working walks. Yes. Yes, he's striking out everyone's striking out. Well, all baseball strikes out too much. And is he? So in 70, in 70 games played, which is 200 at that's, he has 80 strikeouts. Yeah, that's not as bad as I once thought. It's not as bad as people far.

20:37Like, like, I mean, it's not good. No, it's not nearly, it's not nearly as bad as everyone thought it was going to be. Right. I just think what they've gotten out of him is really good. It's been really solid baseball. And he's a better player than Grisham. He is. And clearly what happened last saw, he's saying, you're right. We everybody saw this coming. This is not like, this is not take any, and for some reason, the only people that it takes by shock that this has gone the way it's gone is the Yankees. Everybody else do this. Everybody else knew when they offered it, because I think we did a show that night when they offered the, the, the qualifying offer to him that he was going to take the, we, we knew both sat here and said, are we crazy? I think he's going to take this. Of course, of course he's going to take it. And he took it. And the Yankees were the, the Yankees were the only ones that were surprised that he took the qualifying offer. Yeah. And then he went out there, performed the way he's performed him in the IELTS twice. And we both had many episodes in the office, and where we were like, don't be shocked if Grisham goes back to the player he wasn't San Diego.

21:39And now he's gone back to that player. And for some reason, the entire fan base is the only ones that aren't shocked by this. Yeah. It's like that the injury, no fan's to Grisham is a blessing in disguise, because it makes the decision a lot easier, who was playing in the outfield a lot easier. Yeah. And for some reason, again, we go back to this a lot. It feels like they made the decision based on not wanting to offend Grisham. Yeah. Like not wanting to upset him that they're taking him out of the line up. And we've got to get past that. I know we're in an era of athletes and their egos and stuff, but if you're not good enough, you're not good enough. That's just how the game should work nowadays. Yeah. All right. All right, so Stacy, you were locked in over the weekend during Braves Phillies, which is, believe it or not, less of a type division race than Yankees in the race right now. The Phillies I believe it's still five games back. But that is, those are two teams that no one, I mean the nationally playoff race is so incredibly stacked. Like no one wants to see any team that's going to give me the playoffs nationally. But you took something away from Braves Phillies. What'd you see? All right, so Sunday I was watching Arsenal, then I flipped over and I saw, oh, Braves Phillies. Great, wait for Arsenal by the way. Like, I mean, they're dominant, but Chelsea just, I mean, pathetic job at a Chelsea not getting that victory. Sorry. Yeah, I throw that in there. I don't know if anyone knows this about me. I'm actually an Arsenal supporter.

24:47Really? Yeah, yeah, I randomly, I'm city over here. I randomly chose them 11 years ago because I like red and I wasn't picking Liverpool. So I was like, all right, let me pick. And I wasn't picking man United either. So we agree on that. Yeah. So I was like, oh, Phillies Braves on NBC. Why not? Let me. So it was an interesting game. You know, things were happening. Phillies were up for nothing at one point, right? OK, so Ronald Acunia Jr. hits a big three run home run. It's a fourth one. And then he hits a big three run home run to tie the game. It's going around the bases. Slowly, between second and third, he does a bit of a stutter step. And that goes to third and goes home. I mean, the place is already booing him vociferously. But the TV focuses on this older woman who I would say was probably in her 60s. Really booing him. Just like just you saw the anger on her face.

25:51And she had her hand. Boo. And I left so hard I rewound it to see it again and again, because I just thought it was great. Then Acunia Jr. as they're booing him, steps up on the top step of the dugout and puts his arms up like he's doing a curtain call in Philly. And I thought to myself, would I hate this if someone did this against the Yankees? Yes. But I kind of love it because I really did like I want rivalries to be like that. And I want someone to have fun playing baseball like that. You can tell he has fun playing baseball. And I want to see more of that. I don't want people to be angry at players showing joy. I don't want people being angry at players expressing their individuality, like say wearing their hats a little a skew dug-eddings. Don't even start on that. But I just I loved it. And then the Braves actually ended up winning that game, shocking the hell out of the Philly's because it looked like the game was

26:52well in hand and then, you know, it wasn't. And it was these two teams are these two teams are awesome. And the rivalry, especially doing that at Citizens Bank Park is even more special because the court. Yeah, I was like, wow, I like that is ballsy. I love it. He's a great player. He's an unbelievable player. He's also criminally underpaid. The Braves not all their players at young ages to like these massive deals. And it's it's it's criminal what these guys are getting paid. Yeah. How about Shorber and that came to home wearing too? Like he homeers in every game pretty much. It's it's red. He's back on fire again. Harper's also. Well, it's kind of funny though, isn't it? Because he had like 32 home runs and like by June and you were thinking, oh man, he's going to be up by like 60 and yeah. Yeah, he really slowed down. Because when I saw his home run total, I thought to myself, I'm like, I can clearly remember him hitting his 30 second home run it before the All Star break and thinking, ooh, this is like a well before the All Star break. It's like a couple of weeks before the All Star break. And I was thinking to myself, oh man. Here's a ball here in the whole season.

27:54Yeah. So Bryce Harper before the year gets called up by Dave Dombrausky, the GM of the Phillies, who basically says that Harper is no longer an elite player, which we still were confused that, but why would you ever do that to your stud player? But whatever. Harper goes through this year, Stacey, right now as we presently sit in mid September, 271, 27 homers, 80 RBI's, 888 OPS. Like, and that's that's for by the way, for $27 million per year. The Yankees would kill for that. That's the issue for what he does. Like I just, I can't anymore with, he's four years to the end of that contract. That would have been such a good deal to sign. And by the way, these numbers will be drastically improved if he was in Yankee, Stacey, and hitting like this is a lefty. Yeah. Oh, speaking of Bryce Harper, he had some trouble with the sun on Sunday. Yeah, for sure. I was like, he's actually, he's actually become a really good fielder too since moving over

28:54to first phase two. Yeah. And then the one play that he actually made, but he was kind of having trouble with. And then the next play where he just totally was like, oh my god, cover it. You know what he reminded me of? And I think I told this story. 22 years ago, I went to LA and then we went to Anaheim. And we were sitting in a dugout suite, right? Tigers, angels, someone on the angels had a pop up. And there was about, if you're watching on YouTube, you can see the space between my hands. There was maybe like this much room between the top net and the net that went up. And this ball was going, and it looked like it was going to land on my head. And I ran down the stairs of the dugout suite and I coward. And Pudge Rodriguez looked at me, started laughing, and then ran back because I was like, and that's what Bryce Harper did on the field. He crouched on the ground and covered himself because he could not see the ball. It bounced a little too, as it is right or is left, but whatever it was, I remember. It reminded me of me being afraid of a ball, but I'm not a professional baseball player. So it's okay for me to be. And I also don't see out of one eye.

29:54So it's understandable for me to be cowering when a baseball might be coming at me. That's not a pretty brutal at times though. And those day games, like that son could be shining. It's pretty. And even with the sun, he's we was wearing sunglasses. And one of the guys on NBC, I don't know who it was. I don't think it was Adam on a Vino. I think it was someone else because Adam on a Vino was doing the game. Saying, he should get the kind of sunglasses that blocks out that block out the sun. I'm like, there are no sunglasses that block out the sun. But you can't block out. Because if you block out the sun, you'll block out everything. Like, what do you think he's going to put on his face? I just like, and he said it like two or three times. And even my brother was like, there are sunglasses that confidently, confidently, confidently, saying that there are sunglasses that block out the sun. I'm like, no, they just make it a little better for you to not like, you're not as blinded by the sun, but you're still kind of blinded by the sun. Come on, dude, come back to us. I just thought that was so funny. I was like, um, okay. I don't know who it was though. I couldn't tell. I could tell out of Vino's voice right away.

30:55Like I was like, oh, Adam on a Vino's doing the game. That's cool. But whoever that was, that's not how sunglasses are. So he's so incredibly into baseball. I don't even know that like, you can feel. He's such a geek. I love it. He's such a geek about baseball. Yeah. Such a baseball geek. I love it. But you want based. You want former baseball players to be baseball geeks. Like David Cone is a baseball geek, right? Garak calls a baseball geek. I hope he does. Oh, yeah. Like, I don't know if he will. I don't know if that person. The personality is there for him to do it. Um, I think he is. I think he is the personality to do like post game stuff. Maybe not booth. But like a post game analysis. I think Garak Hall be great. Yeah. I would love it. I would love it. He's such a baseball nerd. It's insane. Yeah. All right. Well, that's it.
