They Tortured their daughter, Fed Her DOG FOOD and then went on Dr Phil.

0:00According to Casey Parsons, her adopted daughter, Erica, was treated just like all her kids. I mean, yes, she was handed over to a virtual stranger at a truck stop and they can no longer locate that person and they haven't actually spoken to Erica in 18 months. But fine, nothing to worry about at all. I'm Emma Kenney, welcome to Banner to Rights, the Deep Dive Crime podcast, which takes you through some of the most heinous crimes the world has ever seen. Hi guys, welcome back. Do you know what I love about certain cases? I love that when you have individuals who are so deeply narcissistic to the core, they are so superior in their beliefs about themselves, they think they can pull the wall over the eyes of investigators and with respect, the general public. And when I say this case, evidence is not perfectly, I could not express that even more strongly. Let's go back. Did you live a 30th, 2013? This is when the story begins to unfold.

1:0219 year old Jamie Parsons, this is Erica Parsons adoptive brother. He goes to the Rowan County Sheriff's Office, this is in North Carolina and he basically reports it is adopted. 15 year old sister is missing. Now, according to him, he hasn't actually seen her since late 2011. This is when she was just 13 years of age. Jamie is basically telling law enforcement that Erica has been absent from the family home for around a year and a half, which is devastating because no formal missing person report has ever been made by the adults who are meant to be responsible for her care. And if your child, whether that's biological or adopted or fostered or step child just disappears of the face of this earth, you imagine the first thing you're going to do is speak to the authorities. And he tells the authorities that Erica had gone missing on or around November the 19 2011, but that isn't all he tells the police. He also makes some really serious allegations about how he felt.

2:05His adopted sister had been treated inside the home by the so called adoptive parents, because let's be real. The vast majority of adoptive parents are saints. They are individuals who open their home and hearts and lives to children that are not biologically related and they make them feel like the most special human beings in the world. But what's actually happened in case the insanity Parsons home is the exact opposite. He actually says to the police that those adoptive parents who meant to protect her had killed Erica and buried her in the backyard. He also tells them that the last time he physically remembers seeing Erica, she was literally standing in a corner as punishment. This was not unusual apparently in this home. He also said one of the things that really stuck with him in his memory is the fact that she looked like a zombie. She just looked like she was very unwell. She even apparently verbally told the caregivers that she didn't feel well and she said that she couldn't breathe properly. I mean, that is a harrowing memory for anyone to have.

3:08Now when Erica says that she's struggling to breathe and she voices that to her adoptive mother, Casey basically says to her to shut the F up. Now the next morning when he wakes up his parents have actually left and when they return there was one thing that is absent from his home, Erica. She's no longer with them. And he said even from the moment that that happened, he felt that something was altogether wrong and he said that when he looked at his mother, she looked normal but he said daddy looked sick like he was about to throw up. But after that he said, mama went on her recliner with the computer and his daddy had apparently a blank stare. Make up that what you will. Arguably if some years involve themselves in a reprehensible murderous act, you would imagine that if they had even a tiny bit of empathy or compassion within the whole being, they would have a blank stare. You have to question somebody who might be able to be involved in such a murderous activity

4:08and just go on a recliner with a computer. So that's what makes volumes about the traits within that human being. Now Jamie's report had come after there had been conflicts in the home and he then goes ahead and retracts this statement. And of course to the authorities this could then mean that he's made it up. We do know that in situations where there is conflict in families and kids want to punish their parents, these kind of things can occasionally happen. They are very occasional. With respect, I always say there's no smoke without a fire and there's probably a reason this child is trying to get help from the authorities. But when they speak to Sandy and Casey Parsons, the adoptive parents, they say this is ridiculous. Erika isn't missing all. We know exactly where Erika is. She's gone to live with a woman that we know as her biological paternal grandmother. She's called Irene Goodman, but we give her the name Nan. Nan, lovely Nan. And apparently she is in the Asheville area of North Carolina.

5:09And they say listen, this woman is the mother of Erika's biological father, Billy Dean Goodman. Now according to the adoptive parents, this Nan, had entered their lives in 2011. And as you would imagine, if she is the paternal grandmother of this child and she wants a relationship with Erika, that could be seen as a really good thing. We know that children certainly thrive more when they have relationships with positive role models and relations from their blood family, particularly if they have the foundation of support in their adoptive one. And apparently Sandy and Casey were open to this. And they said we didn't feel that there was a problem. We wanted to have that access with her Nan and then she starts having regular visits with this woman. Eventually, I apparently Erika decides that she wants to stay with her, which is strange, because I'm just going to throw out there. If I had a child and I brought them up as an adoptive parent and that child said to me, you know what, I've kind of decided I'm going to go and live with my biological Nan.

6:11I would think to myself, what am I doing in my household that has made that child a let to go and live basically with a relative, strange, yes, the blood related, but there's not been a foundation relationship there. And I also need to know a lot about that person if I was going to agree that on any single level. And the handover that they actually describe is bizarre because if you were going to hand over this precious child that you have brought for all these years, because bear in mind they're apparently adopted this little girl at four weeks of age, you're going to think where is she actually going to live? Where will she stay? How do we know she's going to be saved? What is the background of this woman that we are handing her over to? And therefore they think there's no issue at all with all that in mind at actually handing her over at a fast food restaurant. Is Matt Dawles in Mosville? I mean, it just sounds absolutely contextual. This is how we treat the children that we love. And Casey would actually go on to tell law enforcement that Nan was also accompanied by

7:13other women who were called strawberry and Kelly. Strawberry and Kelly. No more details, just a fruit and some decode, Kelly. Now this for law enforcement is very unusual, but they are looking for an explanation as to why Eric was in there. And to some degree, initially that gives them that explanation. Casey said that February 2012, this is shortly before Eric's 14th birthday, was basically the last time that she'd actually talked with Eric over the phone. And then any calls after that happened to reach a disconnected number. Now just bring that into sharp focus. If you're an adoptive mom and you go through the heartbreak of your adopted child saying that they no longer want to be present with you, they want to go live with somebody that hardly know Nan and maybe strawberry and Kelly who knows. You are going to want to retain constant contact. Why? Because what if things go wrong? What if that child is unhappy? How do you consistently know whether their care is reaching an appropriate standard?

8:14But apparently for Casey, a few phone calls and then a disconnected line and she's like, well, I just washed my hands of the situation altogether. Said nobody with any maternal instinct ever. We would be fraught. We would be speaking to the authorities. We would be channeling all of our energy on bringing our child back home because we would be fundamentally devastated that we have no contact with them any longer. Now of course, the authorities aren't just going to listen to that. They're not going to do a welfare check and then walk away going, okay, we've accepted this story. And pretty quickly, that explanation, understandably, began to fall apart. As we clear, all of us already are picking holes in it. So before we talk about the actual crux of the case, let's look at the victim, Erica Lynn Parsons. This child has just been handed over randomly to a stranger essentially. She was born on February the 24th, 1998. She was born in North Carolina and she is an absolutely gorgeous, brown-eyed little girl with a beautiful smile. She entered the world as a biological daughter of Carolina Parsons and Billy Dean Goodman.

9:20But she was born into a world where there was quite a lot of chaos and unfortunately that family instability shapes what's going to happen next. So Carolina Parsons is Erica's birth mother. And she has always framed in interviews her decision to let Erica be adopted, not rejection, but as an attempt to protect her. And I think that to give away a child is one of the most challenging experiences for any woman. I don't think that the vast majority of women take that decision lightly, no matter what their age. The reality is that there will be a tiny fraction of individuals who don't necessarily have that much care or consideration for the babies, but for the most part it is a good, wrenching decision and it feels as if Carolyn absolutely felt that way. The reality was when she had Erica, she was struggling. She had other children. She had difficulty in her marriage. Financially she was struggling. She had a very painful personal history of her own. This included being raised in foster care and homeless shelters and she genuinely felt

10:21that she could give Erica a better life by having her adopted and that's a brave decision to make. She didn't want to go through foster care. She wanted her to have that fundamental foundation and stability from day one. So Carolina agrees for Erica to be adopted within the extended family. And this is great because usually a family adoption where you are still going to have contact with people who matter to you, that can work really effectively. Now Sunday Wade Parsons and Casey Stone Parsons, they agree to adopt her. Bear in mind, Sunday is connected to Caroline through her then husband's family and Casey was Sunday's wife. This meant Erica was going to be raised by people who already had that all important blood connection to her and also family connection to her where they would still retain contact with those who had a investment in that little girl's life from the start. And Erica Parsons biological mother is doing this like I said for the really good reasons

11:23that would mean her child will have a better start in life. Now Erica's adoption that gets finalized. This is when she is still very, very young, around the year 2000. This is when she's still a toddler because clearly a biological mother should still be given the option to decide that she wants that child back in their life. So it takes a period of time before these things are finalized. And we know that very early on it's clear that Erica has some vulnerabilities. So she's got a hearing impairment and certain reports describe her as having disabilities. We know that she briefly attended school, a public school. This is when they noticed her hearing loss. It's very common isn't it? Even though parents should notice these things very regularly and many do. Sometimes you genuinely don't. Sometimes your child has just got used to your communication style. They learn to lip read and also it's very normal to be ignored by kids. So even if they've got these kind of difficulties often it takes professionals who work with them to identify them. And later she's homeschooled. And I'm a massive advocate of homeschooling.

12:23I think it's an amazing thing. But we also know that abuse is useless to shut off any support from the outside world. They don't want educational officials coming in and checking on that child because it gives them more license to do things that are wrong and negligent or violent and they're not having the prying eyes of those who might want to change that child's outcome in their lives. Now Erica's biological father, Billy Dean Goodman, he was described as someone who had really serious personal difficulties. He certainly had substance dependency issues. He also was involved with the law regularly. And really sadly he died in 2016 of what authorities believed was natural causes. But certainly it seems that the way he treated his body had obviously led to the outcome. Now Erica had biological siblings. He's included sister Brittany Parsons. She also has an adoptive brother, Jamie Parsons. He becomes the most significant person in the story because he is a person who literally courageously walks into the Rowan County Sheriff's office on July 30th.

13:26He is close enough to her to know she's gone and old enough by 2013 to tell the authorities. Without his report, Maind no bones about it, Erica's absence would have remained hidden for even longer and that's terrifying isn't it? It's terrifying to imagine that these beautiful innocent beings because they are and teenagers are. I genuinely mean that. You know, we look at young children and we obviously absolutely celebrate little beings. But the truth is you're still a little being when you're 13, 14, 15 for the most part. And the idea that no one is noticing when a 13-year-old just vanishes, that's a horrible indictment on our society. Also living in that home is another child. This is Brooke Parsons. That is Sunday and cases daughter. And that's a biological link. And I bring them up because of the fact that she and her brother have that all important biological link with the Parsons. And whilst most of us don't need that, we don't need blood relations with the people we

14:30love. Think about all your friends that you love. You don't need it because you're a well-adjusted, good human being with compassion and empathy within your nature. But unfortunately, if you have a caregiver who has a narcissistic streak or a sociopathic streak and they are not biologically related to the children that they share a home with, it can lead to really big problems for those children. Like I said, it doesn't mean that the other children escape completely unharmed because when you have those kind of natures, you can still do things that are pretty reprehensible to your kids. It means you are more likely to abuse the child that is not biologically connected to you. Because you like ownership, you like territory, and you believe you own your kids and their extensions of you. And therefore you restrain and refrain sometimes from harming them. But the non-biological children, well, they are property of yours that you can't should you choose, disposal. Now there is pretty limited information on cases and Sundays background. I will tell you now, Casey is 100% a pathological liar of the highest order.

15:35When I say she could have PhD in lying, I'm underestimating her. She's probably professor level in this context. Cases really capable of presenting herself to other people in this plausible way. Sandeous as well, but certainly he is led by her. And people around them, they see this very foundational family structure. And it looks ordinary from the outside. But how often do we see cases where something looks all together ordinary from the outside, but you literally brush the curtains aside and you see something deplorable within and that's what's going on here. Now Casey, 100%, she is the more dominant figure in the relationship. You could say that she was the brains of the outfit. I use that very loosely. I'm not sure there's very much going on behind the eyes aside from the level and some evil. But Sande is definitely more of a follower and participant, not in any way, excusing his behavior quite the contrary.

16:36But like I said, within the soul of this perpetrator where Sandeous concerned, I think there is a tiny shred of empathy tiny, very small. But when it's activated, it is activated. And there are some feelings there. Now bear in mind for Erica, this adoption is supposed to give her the stability that she absolutely deserves, that we would always to give that child. But instead, her world doesn't become a place of thriving in narrows. And then over time, as you can hear from what I've said, she becomes essentially invisible. Her Caroline, the birth mother, she just occasionally visit with Erica after the adoption. But the last time she actually physically sees her child is in January 2011. And this is months before she disappeared. But again, it speaks volumes to me about Caroline, the fact that she is continuing to have that relationship with her daughter. And whilst it is not regular, it means that she was at least trying to keep that relationship going.

17:36Now when law enforcement try to establish whether Nann Goodman, this apparent Irene Goodman exists, they basically find the Erica's biological paternal grandmother, the person who's meant to be Irene, so Billy Dean Goodman's mother, had actually died in 2005. So unless they handed Erica over to a ghoul in McDonald's, which I'm highly doubtful of, they are lying about this reality. And they also find out that Irene wasn't Irene, it was actually Chloe Goodman, which another really deserved. Erica's biological mother, Caroline Parsons, at this point, is also saying, there is no Nann that exists of this name. In fact, the Nann you're relating to and referring to is dead. Now, bear that in mind. The Parsons have been so firm in their belief that they're not going to get found out for anything they've done, that they feel they can concord these ridiculous stories and get away with it.

18:37Just because they feel that somebody is disposable, they extend that belief system to other people, why is anybody going to care that Erica's just disappeared off the face of this earth? That's the mindset, that's the psychology of these kind of individuals. And from this point onwards, law enforcement are very clear, who is this woman? Who is Nann? The Parsons are absolutely unable to provide the investigators with any reliable details whatsoever that will allow them to locate this Nann. And Casey goes on to say, oh no, listen, it's all fine. In fact, I have been in contact with Nann through Facebook. And the investigation is like brilliant, because Facebook has a trail and we're going to be able to see those conversations and we're going to be able to be assured of this child is fine. And then she's like, oh, but I can't show you the Facebook page. Said no one innocent in the history of people who are innocent. Now the investigators really do start digging. They look at the details around the alleged trip, the trip where they say the Erica has

19:41basically decided she wants to stay with Nann. And Sandy and Casey had actually said that Brooke, their daughter, had gone with them to this exchange. But when the investigators sit with Brooke and interview her, she says, I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't go with them at all. And that's interesting to me. Because very often, children feel that they're going to betray their parents if they don't speak a statement that they had been told to speak. And you can bet your bottom dollar that the Sandy and Casey will have told her to say, oh yeah, you were with us. But when you are confronted with an interview by the police, and you are an innocent party, and yourself might have some suspicion about the actions of your parents, or you may have well learnt the kind of human beings they are because you've been brought by them, then when you're asked those questions, often you will tell the truth because unlike your parents, you're a good human being. Now, they also find out Erica didn't actually take any of her personal belongings with her. Just like, you know, I'm just going to go, I'm going to live with this

20:42stranger that actually doesn't have the same name as my actual biological Nann. I'm just going to leave everything here. I'm just going to walk out of my life. Now when the investigators question them on this, they say, listen, this Nann was so lovely that she actually purchased all new clothing for her to wear, just everything brand new. Let's just walk you away from your life, give you a whole new life, total new wardrobe, style your all of these things, just contextual for a Nann. And they also said that when Nann, when Irene Goodman picks Erica up, guess what? One of the women, apparently the woman who goes by the nickname Strawberry, she was there and she was like, you know, what you want to come and see? Come and see this stash of clothing still with tags on in the back of our van. As if the suggestion is, these people have been like, should we wait for the child to figure out, you know, the size of the clothes and the style that she likes. I was just going, buy an insider, wardrobe and just be prepared because you know, she's not going to bring anything with her.

21:45That is the story that they are actually suggesting plays out. And they also said that the house that she was going to go move into actually had a stable with horses. Yeah. Pick it fence probably as well. Just wondrous environment that this child has just walked into, new clothes, new home, new Nann because literally it's not the same person as a biological one and now new horses. What's not to like? Let's just close the case. Everything's fine. Genuinely, are they thinking that would happen? Now, once that missing person report was fired, please then actually do begin searching the person's property in Salisbury. This includes the family home on Miller Chapel Road. They don't find any sign of Erica. But then again, they have been told that she isn't there. So are they expecting to find her not alive? I would doubt. So investigate at this point and move numerous items from the person's home and amongst the IMC's, our books and materials that are actually

22:49connected to high profile child death cases. These included information on John Benne Ramsey and also information related to the South Carolina Susan Smith case. I'm sure that all of you know these cases, but John Benne Ramsey, that involved the killing of a beautiful six-year-old little girl, John Benne Ramsey and Boulder, Colorado in December of 1996. It's still as far as people concerned an unsolved case. Her mother basically suggested that a ransom note had been found inside the family home and then really sadly later that day that beautiful little girl was found dead in the basement of her house and her cause of death. I believe was listed as Asphyxia Basharangulation and also it was associated with cranio cerebral trauma which basically meant that she had been strangled and also received a blunt force trauma head injury and like I said, it remains unsolved, it remains open. No one has actually been convicted. And then there is the Susan Smith case that happened back in 1994. She was very similar to a woman called Diane Downs case that I've covered on this

23:51channel and she basically posed in a scenario where she claimed a black male car jacket had taken a car with her two beautiful little boys in, three-year-old Michael Daniel Smith and 14-month-old Alexander Tyle Smith. They were still inside the car and she basically let it roll into the lake and basically after strapping the boys in there made sure that they had drowned in that lake. So she got convicted in 1995 of murdering both children, she got life in prison and made sure you're right in hell for those actions. But this information kind of stands out to the authorities. I also appreciate many of us have a real interest in true crime. Many of us have books on true crime so it's just an automatically implicate someone in a crime. To some degree is ambiguous that kind of evidence but when you actually add it up with the fact we're now dealing with a missing child well that feels a little bit more incriminating. Now investigators also remove sections of the home protesting. This includes drywall and also baseboards from a closet area

24:53because they notice in this closet area that there was some red staining and also a pair of Arizona jeans with red stains were also seized as well as other swabs taken and samples taken. So they're taken this really seriously and we know where they're going when they are looking at these kind of things. Now they also search a second property that takes place in this red wooden storage building on the property connected to Sandi's family in China Grove. Now that actual buildings described as a small red one story wood frame structure but it's strange what they find inside it really is. So inside that structure investigators find a videotape, they find pieces of a vacuum cleaner, they find teeth, let that sink in, they find a hammer, they also find school records, what are they doing there? It makes no sense. Now of course the thing about Sandi and the thing about Casey is they aren't really wall flowers when it comes down to the public. They think that they can explain these things away and Sandi literally tries to give

25:59public explanations from those items. He says the teeth were baby teeth from his children. Well any dentist will tell you whether they are or whether they're not and don't get me wrong. I know people who keep their kids baby teeth, they're very connected to them. Same as people keep a curl from the hair when the baby isn't so and so forth. Same as people keep their umbilical cords. This is not out of the ordinary people do it but a dentist will know whether they are baby teeth. And he also said the reason that a hammer might have had blood on it was because it had been used to kill a rodent again. They're going to be able to do simple tests on not to see whether that's true. And then this case gets even more bizarre because in August 2013, Sandi and Casey think to themselves you know what we need? We're not a bit of interest in this case regarding how innocent we are and they thought you know the best place to go and actually suggest that innocence is on Dr. Phil. Now not everyone will watch Dr. Phil in the past. Some of you will have seen him online.

27:02Some of you might never have caught an episode and you may have your thoughts on Dr. Phil positive or negative. And I don't know about you but if you have caught Dr. Phil's show then you will know that probably the worst thing to do if you might be guilty of a crime is to go on it. And the reason for that is Dr. Phil doesn't like people who BS him. In fact he will go out of his way to demonstrate your guilt in a multitude of ways. He's done it many many times. And in this case you will be put in a position for example where they're like just take a polygraph test. I don't know whether I want to just take a polygraph test but I don't know whether you're innocent. Aren't you? Well I am innocent take a polygraph test. You know they put pressure on individuals where they have to go ahead and do these things and guilty parties will agree it because the whole nation's watching them and then they will look deceptive as they indeed are. But also he's watching. He's watching the way that somebody is speaking and he's picking people up on the words that they say and the stories that they tell and the inconsistencies that come forward. And as part of that show,

28:05Sandy Mr. Innocent says okay I will I'll take a polygraph test and he is considered in that polygraph test strongly deceptive by a former FBI agent. Now don't get me wrong. Polygraph tests I believe to be about 65% accurate so throw a coin a lot of the time. But when you're dealing with a former FBI agent who is well trained and schooled in this area you've got a much higher incidence of them getting it right. And strongly deceptive is not on the fence. It's absolutely indicative of lying. Now Casey when it comes down to her polygraph test she's like oh the problem is I've got a high level of pain. Now the thing is if you know anything about a polygraph test if you taking drugs for pain or if you're in a high level of pain that can impact the way that you physically respond they're not going to feel it is safe to do that. I will invalidate the test probably and therefore they won't allow you to complete it. How convenient that she's got this high level of pain. I will tell you I've watched her in the episode of Dr. Phil and she really doesn't look like she's in pain whatsoever. For example when I'm in a high level of pain

29:09I'm not on TV that would go without saying I'm not doing this because I'm in a high level of pain. Not her she can just crack on in an interview professing her innocence. And in spite of all of this attention that is not going well for them they continue to insist Eric it is alive and well and with Nan this mythical figure. And Sandy at this point is also having the audacity to tell news reporters that there have been some alleged sightings from around this time that they're appearing on these programs and he says that really all he needs is for Erica to call home and say that she's safe. So there are apparently these sightings it's just that she's not picking up the phone. Well we all know there are always false sightings because people look like each other and good people out there will call those in if they believe that they've seen an individual who seems to be missing. That's not in any way suggesting that this couple are innocent. Now the investigators are increasingly clear that they do not believe this non-story whatsoever. Then the big guns get

30:14involved. The FBI publicly joins the search and rightly so. Also the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and also the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children they all connect together. And the FBI themselves said that the information provided by Erica's adopted parents simply isn't true. Now because Erica has been missing since she's 13 one of the problems that they've got is no one can say how Erica looks now because she's a 15 year old girl in the moment that she's now missing. So the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children they do create an age progression image and these are really powerful. These really do have impact. Now that image is usually so long-siding earlier photograph of Erica which is taken when she is a younger girl. And the hope of that is just to generate tips if she is indeed alive somewhere. She just hasn't been recognised by people. They even put rewards out for any information that can bring some kind of closure to this case. And the Rowan County Sheriff's Office they even announced a reward.

31:14And after Sunday in case his television appearance on Dr. Phil they as a company Dr. Phil themselves offered money toward the reward total. And on top of that the FBI offered a $25,000 reward. So six months after that they increased that reward to $50,000 that's around the August. So if you do have information you get a really good payday and that is something that insights people to involve themselves more in these cases. Not that we should have to but certainly financial gain has impact. Now as the investigation intensifies the couple's two youngest biological children are actually removed from the home by social services. Now Sandy and Casey of course are objecting to this in public but there has to be good reason why those children were removed. And the couple at this point they end up moving to Fayetteville in North Carolina which is strange when you've lost custody of your children surely be doing everything in your power to get them back. But no for these guys it's just a new start. Now it's also around this time that the Rowan

32:17County Sheriff's Office said that Sandy and Casey have just stopped cooperating all together. In fact even after the Dr. Phil show when they were trying to get back in contact with them they just went radio silent because of truth is when people have been exposed to this couple they immediately know that they're not telling the truth and that makes us like absolute luttowns we want to know what have you done to Erica. Now soon after Erica was reported missing Sandy and Casey basically hired an attorney and that's because they do believe there were suspects which to some degree is correct well done. Sandy and Casey you are absolutely only suspect really but it does to some degree make you look more suspicious. And I do appreciate that certain people do always feel the need for a lawyer but for the most part if you're an innocent party you'll just speak to law enforcement you'll speak to anyone because your own consideration you have is to solve the problem and if you've done nothing wrong there is only a positive outcome for you

33:18when things get solved. If you are recoiling from that if you're refusing to engage when a child is missing it is going to illuminate that suspicion further. Now by 2014 at this point the investigation have basically gone down two tracks so the first is the missing person investigation but also in tandem with this. The turns out to be a federal fraud investigation because if think about Sandy and Casey is they are bad to the core. Turns out first of all they'd actually continue receiving adoption assistance and all the benefits that were connected to Erica. Bear in mind she's not even with NAN why aren't they sending the money to NAN that's the legal route that's what they should be doing. This is exactly one year after Jamie Parsons has walked into that police station and reported his adoptive sister Erica missing. Sandy and Casey Parsons are arrested by the FBI in Fayetteville they're not arrested

34:25on murder charges they are actually arrested on a federal fraud charges the FBI want them inside and they're going to figure out a way to get them inside. Now bear in mind Erica's body hasn't been found they've not been charged with murder and investigators certainly at this point don't have the physical proof needed to hand out any other charges but they have found out evidence of a series of scams by Casey Parsons. She is just a pathological lawyer this goes all the way back to 2000. This is when Casey Parsons had been hired to be a surrogate mother she had actually successfully become pregnant and she took $10,000 for her services. Now weeks after it's confirmed that she is pregnant she caused the biological mother a woman called Amy Miller and she says I'm really sorry I've had a miscarriage. Now for whatever reason the mother who was intended Amy feels that she's not telling the truth. She asked her to get confirmation to show her medical records but she refuses

35:30to do that and then she changes her phone number and then starts sending Amy really nasty emails which is bizarre if you were meant to be this intended surrogate parent. Now at that point it turns out Casey was actually offering to sell the baby to her own sister and Robin obviously feels that there is something altogether wrong with Casey's attitude so she ends up searching online. She finds Amy Miller and says listen Casey is still pregnant and the Casey was taking money from other people in fact two of the couples at this point who wanted to adopt the baby so Casey is a horrific excruciary human being. We'll just put yourself in the mindset of somebody who desperately wants a baby and I know that not everyone is on board with surrogacy but people have a right to make those decisions and imagine feeling finally you have this opportunity and you find out your surrogate who has gone ahead and agreed to bring a baby into this world for you is actually pregnant the celebration the anxiety the anticipation and then the sadness and grief because apparently they've

36:33lost the baby and then it turns out you find out that they are actually still pregnant with that baby and then now trying to sell the baby and they're trying to sell that baby to two other couples who desperately want a child. The amount of heartbreak and grief that is going on because of this woman's actions is just horrific. Now fortunately Amy Miller was able to take custody of her child at birth she got law enforcement involved and there was also evidence presented of an e-bay scam this is a classic where Casey had basically accepted money for items listed on ebay but she never actually sent the items and Judge Schroder actually called Casey and called a serial swindler which she clearly is like I said this woman would not know truth if you got a huge tuna fish wrote truth on it and smashed her across the head with said tuna fish I mean pick whichever fish you want or just go for some heavy vegan frozen food whatever is your bag just use that. Now Casey Parsons she does

37:34actually end up leading guilty to 15 charges because she has no other option they are clearly evidenced and Sandy Parsons her husband ends up going to trial and he was indeed convicted on most of the federal fraud charges. Now prosecutors and the judge they made it clear during the sentencing that the fraud was not being viewed as separate from Erika's disappearance so they're basically saying this is all going to be something that plays into the same reality which is you are bad to the core. Now the state they'd argued that the reason that Sandy and Casey continued collecting money for Erika was because they 100% knew from the very beginning of doing that she was never coming back she was never going to reappear is as simple as that they were happily taking that cash knowing there was no one out there looking after that child. Now during the sentencing phase more information emerged it mostly came from family witnesses this includes Jamie Parsons and also cases sister Robin Ashley they said it was clear really early on that Erika was singled out that she was really

38:40badly isolated that she was mistreated. Can you imagine being an adoptive child and looking at the way the biological children are treated differently than you imagine the psychological impact on you it's one of those things that can cause deep scars even if you survive these situations because like it or otherwise when you find out you're adopted there are questions that you want to ask there are feelings that are provoked and evoked and for the most part they can be settled really effectively by your family who've adopted you some of you will go on journeys where you meet your birth parents or birth brothers and sisters all of those things can happen but we can always go back to the origin of finding out that we're adopted and recognizing that they can't have implications and the worst thing for a child who is going to have that experience is to see themselves as a distinct from those who are biologically related to the primary caregivers because it

39:42just extenuates any neuroses they may have about the abandonment that occurred at birth but of course they don't care about Erika and they don't care about her feelings psychologically and they don't care about her safety physically either. Now these accounts include allegations that Erika have been forced to stand in a corner she'd been locked in a closet she'd been deprived of food they'd forced her at points to eat dog food she'd also regularly apparently been beaten she'd been choked and she'd been absolutely subjected to many painful physical punishments because the thing about physically aggressive parents is in the end they escalate so the punishment that would have originally satisfied them it doesn't if you're sadistic in nature if you're violent within your core then you get used to the kind of aggression that you're using and so you have to escalate that so you enjoy it more for most parents who choose physical punishments I am 100%

40:42against them but I appreciate that there are places where it is legal to slap a child for example but for most parents who choose that path they do it in a painful way to the self they don't enjoy doing it they wish they didn't have to do it and they make that choice because they believe it could have some positive outcomes where that child is concerned behaviour wise but like I said they are feeling the impact personally and psychologically but if you are a sadistic violent human being if you are psychologically connected to enjoying another person's pain then of course once the slapping doesn't feed you then the punching will begin then the kicking then the eyes-sealing then thinking about what next sadistic events can you bestow on that pocket because it fuels you it feeds you and you dehumanise them now so you don't even think of them as a child they're just somebody that you're allowed to abuse now at this point bear in mind prosecutors are absolutely beginning to argue that Erica isn't alive they haven't found a body but everything

41:45points to the fact this child is no longer walking our earth and one of the things they bring forward is they have been claiming that money why would they be claiming that money if she was living somewhere else that money would be being claimed by someone else so we get to a February 2015 hearing at this point both Jamie Parsons and Robin Ashley very bravely give testimony about what had really happened Robin testified that Casey as far as she was concerned beat Erica regularly and she was always making a standing the corner for doing nothing wrong they actually had photogressive Erica standing in the corner on five occasions and they get presented to the court who would do that who would take a photograph of a child being punished I find that sadistic on every single level that's a big red flag for me if I ever were shown a picture by a friend of mine a colleague of mine that demonstrated a punishment being recorded on a phone I would speak to social services I would immediately act on that because it is not contextual it's not normal in parenting it's actually

42:49shaming for that child it's the same when parents upload really humiliating pictures and videos to the internet because you want to get a reaction and applause from the public because they're punishing their child real hard I find that deplorable on every single level your job as a parent is to protect and that doesn't mean you don't make your children take responsibility and accountability it doesn't mean that you positively stroke them when they do things wrong you make sure that your child understands right from wrong the last thing you do is invite strangers to see the pain that they went through in that challenging moment and yet for some reason some parents feel it's completely acceptable to do these things and she also testified how she regularly saw bruises and marks on Erica and on top of that case he had literally relinquished Erica to Robbins custody for several months and the reason that she apparently did this is so that she wouldn't quote kill her she literally said that now it speaks volumes about Robin Robbins in court testifying against her sister

43:56the very fact that she's saying that she was worried about this child enough to take her in because this woman is suggesting as an adoptive parent that she might kill a child she won't necessarily believe that to be possible but she will have seen that breadcrumbs trail of possibility regarding the safety of Erica or indeed the lack of it in this context now she says that Casey then ends up taking her back why because she thought oh I'm getting money for this child I'm not getting to trouble if she isn't in the home which tells you why she's in that relationship with that little girl is because she wants the cash she doesn't want the care now according to Jamie's testimony the boy who walked into that police station and told the truth he said some pretty horrendous things with respect my toes really curled and my gut really hardened and twisted when I looked at this research because it is very disturbing apparently Jamie said that Casey would often bend Erica's fingers backwards and the intention was to break them and then once

44:59she had broken those fingers now just imagine that for a minute imagine what you would feel like if your child actually broke their fingers I mean the reality is we do the opposite of course then pain and harm we heal them when they're in trouble to actively bend fingers back to the point where she breaks the fingers of that girl and then actually to deny her any medical assistance because she's enjoying that and she doesn't want anybody interfering she actually would go ahead and make some homemade casts to prevent the fingers becoming too problematic but obviously she's not receiving any medical care and what kind of torture is going on that this woman enjoys that kind of and there is nothing to say for one minute that Erica is doing anything disobedient or oppositional this is just Casey enjoying it she's thinking about how to harm this little girl because very mind we've got neglected pretty much emaciated child who is not going to be the body weight she's meant to be at this moment in time who isn't getting the sustenance that she deserves at this time so she is going to be tiny compared to her peers and her adopted brother also said that she would be

46:04forced to live in a closet she'd be locked inside for hours at a time she'd also be beaten if she did to go to the toilet in there even though they didn't give her toilet breaks and she had no other choice because the thing about abusers is they're like permission bases so of course you put somebody in a closet where they can't go to the toilet it gives you an excuse when they saw themselves to beat them harder and he also talked about the fact that they would regularly make her eat canned dog food that's dehumanization at every single level I don't get me wrong a starving child will eat canned dog food with relish because at the end of the day they are at least getting fed that will not feel like the punishment it would to you or I because they are literally starving but what it says regarding the perpetrator's mindset is you are not a human being you are an animal as far as we can say and it legitimizes the way that they're behaving towards the child and this young man said that sandy the father in this case would also just get mad at times and

47:06when he got mad he just punched Erica on the head and he also very honestly told the court how they made him participate in abusing Erica from the time he was five years old to when he was 16 years old and he said in the end he couldn't stand it any longer but that is disgraceful because the message to your child when your parent is do what I say and if you are witnessing what can happen to another child in your home and you fear that that could happen to you too if you don't do what the perpetrator is asking it puts you in a very pro-carrier situation and also you don't know what's normal until you start figuring out what is abnormal and it takes him time to do that so as he gets older he starts to realise what is going on this is a terrible situation but by then he's been groomed in this behaviour and the trauma and impact that will have on him too down the line I imagine it's something unimaginable and something that will be very difficult to bear in years to come and for him to know that the result of the abuse has led to Erica's death

48:11which undoubtedly it has he was a part of that albeit an unwilling party albeit an unwilling party who did try to actually raise the alarm and indeed did in spite of that initial retraction now there are other accounts of family members who saw her being hit with a belt buckle and apparently that belt buckle would break the skin there were also people who said that they saw her being choked and thrown to the ground also a hand being slammed in a door why is nobody running in and taking this child to safety I genuinely can't cope when I know that people saw this kind of behaviour and still this child was left there at the end of the day if I saw somebody punch a kid the parent who's punching the kid even if they're a lot bigger than me better be ready for an altercation because I'm going to throw myself in front of that child and then I'm going to take that child with me and I think for the most part that's how we all feel and there's one episode where she has a tooth knocked out because of the violence then during another episode whatever arms is

49:11reportedly fractured and again what do they do they make a homemade cast because they don't want to seek medical attention and that arm never even heals properly and the reality is that with general breaks you go to a doctor's it gets sorted out you heal fine and you go on to live a life that's good in spite of that break but if you have a break that isn't attended things like infection can occur that can actually lead to death at times let alone the fact that you're obviously going to deal with some rheumatoid issues as you move forward are thritiquized but they don't care about her and they certainly don't care about a future because the reality is Erica isn't going to get one and on top of all the things I've just said the psychological torture was clear as well they would just leave Erica out of all family activities they're letting her know you're not one of us you don't belong we don't love you we don't care for you and for Erica this child let's remember her let's remember that we're talking about a human being with feelings with fears with hopes

50:14with all of those things and all of these things are happening to this girl now Casey pass and father a guy called James Stone he actually said he decided that he was going to report Erica missing when he learned his grandson already had what does that tell you about the family members around Casey they know she is bad to the core and he said I actually did see Erica get abused by Casey at least on two occasions this included once by pulling Erica to the ground by her own hair and he actually said that Erica would just done that and take the alleged abuse as if he said she was just frozen by fear that's not what was happening there she wasn't frozen by fear yes there will have been fear there but actually this state we're talking about where Erica is concerned is a state of learned helplessness she knows no one's coming she knows no one's protecting her she knows that if she fights it'll be worse for her so she just stands there and accepts the beating because what else can she do we get some marks of 27th 2015 at this point the two are sentenced by

51:20judge Thomas D Schroeder Casey pass and at this point is given 10 years and is ordered to serve three of supervised release after that sentence she's also ordered to pay 41,814 in restitution and also to pay a $1,500 special assessment Sandy passons he sentenced to eight years and was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release also to pay $14,662 in restitution and to pay $4,300 in special assessments and the sentences they were actually quite severe for the type of fraud charges involved but the reason that judge Schroeder explained they were severe sentences was because of the lack of records that showed Erica still existed so he's basically saying I'm coming down really hard on you because you're saying that you're accepting these adoption payments even when she wasn't present but you haven't told us where she actually is so he believes that they're lying to the court so he rejects as a judge the story that they had sent Erica to live with a paternal grandmother

52:26and the judge told them both I believe you are responsible for Erica's death and he also said that he couldn't think of a single case that had troubled him more he said that she and Sandy had done something horrible to Erica and what had happened was no known to them and to God he actually described Casey as the brains or the mastermind of the operation and he called her morally bankrupt amen to that she really is now when addressing Sandy he basically said he couldn't fathom the hatred shown towards Erica he pointed out all the evidence that Erica had been locked in a closet have in fact dog food and said she was just a little girl who wanted to be loved now interestingly the defense turn is asked of them to be allowed to report to prison voluntarily our later time is that okay if our clients just you know pop to prison when they fancy and the judge was like no the heinous examples of human beings they're going to jail right now so they're just denied that request as I look I can't understand with what I know as to why you would think that was appropriate

53:31because the reality is how do we know they are safe people they could pose a threat to anyone based on what we know they did to Erica with that in mind they were taken to custody immediately now Sandy's attorney said that they were going to appeal both the judgment and the conviction when it came down to Casey though even though she had just pled guilty or so actually went ahead and filed a notice of appeal now the major break in this case doesn't come until 2016 can you imagine how frustrating that is for all the investigators and the family who were involved and affected by this case so this is while serving his federal sentence Sandy Parsons has that prick of conscience literally like I said he's now away from Casey Parsons who's been that brains as they put it behind the operation and now he's had time to gestate on his actions to reflect on what he's done he realizes that he can't carry the burden any longer and he starts cooperating

54:31with investigators so at this point he acknowledges that Erica was in fact dead and he goes ahead and describes both the treatment and the home and also the disposal of her body now the Warren says that he admitted that the treatment included but was not limited to locking Erica in a closet beating her with a belt book or bending her fingers back and choking her he also said the Erica's body had been discarded in late December of 2011 apparently near his mother's house in South Carolina he also eventually said look I will take you to where Erica has buried we get to the September the 27th 2016 at this point as you'd expect Sandy is temporarily released from federal custody he's then taken by the authorities to a wooded area near a place called Blair Hendrix Road this is between pageland and Mount Crogum close to the property that's associated with his family there he points investigators towards a shallow grave and I could have a dog

55:31indicates at the site and within about 30 to 45 minutes investigators do begin finding evidence bones are recovered and those remains are really sadly identified as Erica lint Parsons they did that through dental records and also DNA analysis Erica of course at this point is no longer a missing child she's a murder victim as we all know also the property where they found their remains was literally on the same land as that shed whether found the various items including the hammer and including the teeth now the autopsy was performed on September 28 2016 the chief medical examiner noted that the remains were almost entirely skeletonized which of course limits to some degree what medical examiners could determine about the exact mechanism of death still the autopsy did document fractures in various stages of healing so we know the abuse was ongoing and extensive so these included injuries to the nasal bones to the mandible scapular to the ribs to the vertebrae to the

56:33right humorous to the thinkbone and to the left tibia this girl was brutalized on every single level she was taught to be on belief there was also evidence of low bone density and a growth deficit that means basically she was being malnourished and medical records revealed that her last actual visit to a pediatrician was when she was just six years of age and even when she was six years of age that physician expressed concern for her poor growth so all the years back then Sunday was concerned that she wasn't thriving now the medical examiner concluded Erika's course of death was homicidal violence of undetermined means and that's because of those remains being in sort of poor condition and even though they can't actually have one prescribed scores of death it's clear the culmination of injuries is enough to result in that child dying along with the malnutrition it also stated that her injuries were consistent with multiple bloomed for trauma injuries over a prolonged period and it said that she was literally suffering from untreated

57:35infection or other serious medical conditions shortly before her death that's why she was saying to the excuse for an adoptive parent I can't breathe now the autopsy essentially summarized what investigators already knew they already knew because of the narrative that the family would weave together and it also noted that the children were in the home who were present to the abuse but who apparently hadn't been subjected to the same treatment this happens time and time again in families they select one individual to abuse and they're protective to some degree of the other kids because it means that when there's all the kids that interviewed they tell a completely different story to the child who might be accusing the predators who are harming them it obviously becomes clear to all of the people involved in this case the Erica was singled out within the household and she had just lived for years with prolonged abuse and absolute deprivation and then once she is dead, Sunday and Kasey can see her death, dispose of her body and create an absolute

58:40all-wire of a story that she's gone to live with an arm. Now the release of the autopsy findings then gives the prosecutor is what they always needed to move forward with the charges and at the end of the day it also means that her body was brought home to those people who cared for her. Her funeral was held in February 2017, Law enforcement attended, family members attended, community members attended the first Baptist church in Salisbury, North Carolina and they basically came together because they wanted to mark this child who did mean something to this world even if her apparent care givers didn't believe that. In fact she would have celebrated her 19th birthday the day before her funeral was held and what's really powerful about that is it means that the people who cared about this child albeit they wish they cared more could now mark her life, mark her death and make sure that she still has meaning even today in that situation

59:40and genuinely it's too little too late of course it is particularly for somebody like a biological mother Caroline Parsons who genuinely believed that she was handing her child over to someone who was going to give her a better foundation but like I said at least that child was brought home. Now the couple are indicted by a Rowan County grand jury on February the 19th 2018 they're indicted on first-degree murder, felony child abuse inflicting serious injury, felony concealment of death and felony obstruction of justice. Now the concealment charge was added because of the fact that Erika's remains had actually been dismembered or otherwise destroyed which is her own beyond belief. So this indictment stated that they had knowingly and willfully dismembered and destroyed human remains by removing body parts or basically otherwise obliterating portions of Erika's body. The Rowan County Sheriff Kevin Oton actually spoke of how this case had haunted the whole county for years and how investigators had really hoped to find Erika and now they really

1:00:43hope that they were going to come through with the most serious sentence possible. He was thrilled that they managed to extradite and bring back both of these perpetrators to face the charges and the prosecutor said they were going to seek the death penalty. Now the reason they were going to seek the death penalty was due to those aggravating factors which they described as heinous, atrocious and cruel. Now there was a mounting of evidence by this point and the defence actually said can we take some more time to review the evidence that was granted and this is so key because they desperately want to make sure that the sentence that is given to them is one that is spitting for the horror that happened to that girl. So it's February 2019 at this point is a degree that Sunday and Casey are going to be tried separately. Now the reason for that is Casey is viewed by the state as the more culpable party, the driving force and Sunday we know had actually cooperated by leading investigators to Erika's remains so clearly they see him more as an ally for the court even though equally

So you probably want to be surprised to know that when Casey Parsons found out that he was going to be the prosecution star witness she thought hmm with the death sentence on the table it's probably better to plead guilty and that's what she does. So on August the second she pleads guilty to first degree murder, felony child abuse, inflicting serious bodily injury, felony concealment of death and also felony obstruction of justice and the reason that she did that was one because she was going to get guilty without a doubt and two because she wanted to save her in skin. Main of ones about that. That guilty plea avoided a capital trial, it removed the possibility of a death sentence, it does mean that she's going to get the harshest sentence available but it also means she's going to carry on breathing. So Casey ends up getting sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. She also actually received an additional consecutive sentence which went overall that she was given life without parole plus an additional 23 years which I love. You're dead, you've got another 23 years to serve. Casey addressed the call at that hearing

1:02:50and it's unbelievable how delusional she is. She goes on to say how God had given her Erica as a precious gift and entrusted her to cover and then she had failed God and failed Erica. She also said she had to spend the rest of her life knowing Erica was dead and the life she'd expected for herself was gone. Well number one, no one gives a toss about the life you expect to be yourself being gone. Yamage your choices, you do the crime, you do the time. But don't you have the audacity to spend time in court suggesting that you feel guilty for what you did and believe me you did fail God and you ain't going to be meeting God because there is somebody altogether more fiery who's going to be collecting you when you take your last breath. Erica's biological mother Caroline Parsons, she actually was in court and she made it pretty clear that she believed Casey 100% deserved life in prison and she did feel fortunately that that was some kind of final

1:03:51measure of justice although it just didn't bring her daughter back and after the hearing she also expressed relief that Casey would never again have freedom with children or grand children in the way she once would have been able to and after Casey's guilty plea we obviously then have to look at Sandy Parsons trial. So that was set for April the 6th 2020. Now his attorney actually said can we have a change of venue and that would have moved the trial out of Rowan County because of the intense local publicity and also just the emotional weight of the case people were very angry with him and rightly so and it did make sense from to request that as Erica's case had genuinely been very heavily covered in Rowan County for years and so because of the fact they'd both appeared in national media and during those periods of time they were on Dr Phil etc it had just drawn extensive attention so it was pretty unlikely because of all those things that Sandy would have received a fair trial before a local jury but having said that in the end on December the 17th

1:04:522019 that's eight years to the day from the date marked as Erica's death on her grave. Sandy Parsons did actually plead guilty to second-degree murder to child abuse to concealment of death and also to obstruction of justice so he actually got sentenced to a term of 33 to 43.5 years in prison which means he's not going to get out alive is he that's to be served after his federal sentence as well he ain't walking free at any point and the difference of course in sentencing just reflect the state's assessment of the relative culpability and they know without his cooperation they might never have got those kind of verdicts anyway because they hadn't actually found a body it would have been very difficult and on top of that they're allowed into plead guilty and get that particular time frame because with respect otherwise if they tried it in court the people who were affected and impacted such as the kids growing up in that home in that hellhole witnessing what happened to Erica they would have been dragged into court and they would have had to relive their trauma as well

1:05:55now the defense they tried to go for mitigation where Sandy was concerned they used somebody called Dr. Claudia Coleman who's a psychologist and she basically examined Sandy several times after his arrest and she said he was mentally and physically abused as a child by his stepfather she also said that Sandy suffered from dependent personality disorder and that Katie controlled him because of that he'd also tried to take his own lives several times apparently a subord PTSD had nightmares and also visions about burying Erica and to be fair I don't care sorry I don't care dependent personality disorder work through it stop being dependent you're an adult secondly PTSD get help for it there'd be a lot of people listening to this right now who have PTSD and you know what you don't do you don't hurt kids it's a disgrace that these kind of terms have thrown in to these kind of cases which are

1:06:55completely separate from the condition people have PTSD are traumatized and they also know their impact and they don't like sometimes the impact that they have on people that they love because sometimes they can get angry because of the triggers that they deal with and they do the absolute opposite of try to hurt people and also the fact that he has nightmares and visions about burying Erica good yeah I hope she affects every single moment of every single day for the rest of his natural life because he did what he did and his defense attorney actually said that there was no evidence Sunday intended Erica to die I didn't intend to die but you kept beating us so hard as a man that she got brutalized and tortured and couldn't breathe in the end but I didn't actually intend for her to die because I enjoyed beating her that's the reality and that's chain of causation your major decisions you beat this child to a pulp you starved her to death on top of that and you're surprised at the result Sunday just like Casey thought why not speaking court and he apologized

1:09:03searched and prayed for Erica yeah okay we all believe you now Caroline Parsons Erica's biological she was devastated with a sentence she said that she wanted him to just have a life sentence and she felt his punishment was a slap on the wrist but with respect I don't think he's ever going to get out after completing his federal fraud sentence Sandy Parsons was actually released from federal custody that was on January the 14th 2022 he then began serving his very hefty long north Carolina state sentence like I said I think he's genuinely gonna die there he was admitted to central prison later he was transferred to another state prison facility interestingly he's actually had two infractions while the north Carolina prison system so one was for possession of a weapon and one was for possession of non-authorciting contraband when it comes down to Casey Parsons well she completed her federal fraud sentence in November 2023 and then she was transferred out of federal custody where she then began serving her state sentence for the rest of her natural life
