0:00
Oh my gosh, they view my profile.
0:02
I can't wait for that recruiter to reach out to me
0:05
with a job opportunity.
0:09
See, if somebody viewed your profile,
0:12
maybe a recruiter or a hiring leader and then didn't reach out,
0:15
then you might be wondering what exactly happened.
0:19
See, when people create their own LinkedIn profile,
0:21
they think from their own perspective.
0:23
And that is why it doesn't resonate with hiring leaders.
0:26
But not you, my friend.
0:28
Today, we're going to change the way you think about LinkedIn.
0:31
We'll help you to understand the flow,
0:34
evaluate your own profile,
0:35
and see the exact point when you may have lost them.
0:40
And while we're talking,
0:41
you might want to open up your LinkedIn account
0:43
because you're going to have a couple of lightbulb
0:45
aha moments as you're checking it out
0:47
and listening to this podcast.
0:49
And of course, since you're there,
0:51
go ahead and connect with me,
0:52
send me a quick message,
0:53
let me know you're listening to this episode,
0:55
and I'll send you our three-step LinkedIn profile.
1:02
Hey there, you're listening to The Uncoming Career Podcast,
1:05
and I'm here with you every single week
1:07
to help you stand out in a sea of applications.
1:10
My name is Patricia, and my job is to help you get noticed
1:13
in a system that might feel like human versus robot.
1:17
Now, I'm going to start first with a little bit of a story
1:20
because this very same thing we're talking about today
1:24
happened to me when I first started this podcast,
1:27
and really over the last couple of years,
1:29
if you've been sticking around with me
1:31
and you and I have been having conversations for a while now,
1:34
you've probably seen the evolution.
1:36
When I first started,
1:37
I would talk a lot about terms like emotional intelligence
1:41
and patterns and overcoming barriers
1:43
and transformational coaching.
1:46
And all of these words made sense to me
1:48
as someone who's in the profession of coaching,
1:51
but they didn't resonate with someone who's thinking,
1:54
like, give me what I actually need to get to the job offer
1:57
and see, here's the thing.
1:59
It took me years to realize how to do this.
2:03
At first, I started to DIY it thinking,
2:05
okay, well, I just changed the words.
2:07
And no matter how much I try to change the words,
2:09
my perspective remained.
2:11
So my words were different yet from the same perspective.
2:15
And so eventually I got a coach,
2:17
thank you, Jen, a virtual podcasting school, Jen Rogers.
2:20
By the way, if you need a podcast coach, she is amazing.
2:23
And she helped me how to evolve this in terms of the podcasting
2:27
and being able to understand how to get into someone else's shoes,
2:32
how to think from someone else's perspective.
2:34
Then of course, how to iterate a little bit.
2:37
And now I'm like, oh, that's what you mean.
2:41
And now the words that I think of are more from your perspective
2:46
instead of coming from mine.
2:48
Otherwise, it's like a coach talking to another coach.
2:51
They're like, yeah, yeah, you're preaching to the choir, right?
2:54
But the people who actually need the information
2:56
aren't receiving the message.
2:59
I'm happy to report now that our retention numbers
3:01
are over 100% consistently.
3:04
And what I'm understanding from that
3:06
is that what I'm sharing here,
3:07
it's much more helpful for you now than it was before.
3:10
And that's a great thing.
3:12
That's exactly where we want to be.
3:14
So today what we're gonna do is help you
3:16
to put on the perspective of the hiring leader
3:17
so you can communicate with them
3:19
through your LinkedIn profile.
3:21
Now before we get started,
3:23
I want you to think about these three goals,
3:25
the entire time that we're talking.
3:27
The first goal is attention.
3:29
As soon as someone lands a recruiter or hiring leader
3:33
lands on your profile, you want to grab their attention
3:36
so that they realize I'm in the right place,
3:39
I do want to learn a little bit more about this person.
3:42
Now the second goal is retention.
3:45
That means that as they learn more,
3:47
they are getting more and more interested
3:50
in sticking around to learn even more about your experience.
3:55
The final goal is decision.
3:57
Now we might think of decision as contact me,
4:02
tell me you want to bring me in for a screening.
4:06
But sometimes that decision is not visible.
4:09
So maybe someone looked at your profile
4:11
but decided not to connect,
4:12
but they're gonna forward your information
4:14
to their hiring leader,
4:15
or they're gonna send your information over to a recruiter,
4:18
or they've decided to have a conversation
4:21
with a decision maker.
4:23
So you may not see the action take place and that's okay,
4:26
but the point is that your profile should be optimized
4:30
for three goals, attention, retention and decision.
4:35
Okay, so now heading into your LinkedIn profile,
4:38
we're gonna look at micro decisions within the profile
4:42
just so you can start to get a sense of like, okay,
4:44
how are these decisions being made?
4:46
Now each hiring leader is gonna have their own way
4:50
of making decisions when they look at profiles.
4:52
One hiring leader, Michael, straight to the about section.
4:55
Another maybe a recruiter will go straight
4:57
to the experience section.
4:58
That's all they really care about.
4:59
They just wanna see your titles.
5:01
But what I'm talking about here is different points
5:04
at which someone going from top to bottom in your profile
5:07
will be met with those decision points.
5:10
So really quickly here, going through the top of your profile,
5:13
the initial decision point is, should I scroll?
5:17
Should I hit that connect button?
5:18
Should I hit that message button?
5:20
Those are the main ones there.
5:22
If they decide to scroll, now they're looking
5:24
at your about section, but they can't see everything.
5:28
All they see is four lines.
5:30
And whether or not they decide to learn more about you
5:33
is highly dependent on those four lines.
5:35
Because if you don't open the email, it doesn't matter.
5:39
How good the information is in that email.
5:41
That means that the title of the email,
5:44
the subject line is the most important part of that email.
5:47
So for your about section, the first three to four lines,
5:51
the lines that are visible before that see more link
5:54
are the most important parts.
5:56
So if they decide, yes, I'm gonna go ahead and click see more.
6:00
Then there's multiple micro decisions
6:02
even in this about section.
6:04
Is it a wall of text that already presents
6:07
some friction we're in reading?
6:09
More importantly is the content,
6:11
not the content they're looking for.
6:13
Keep in mind at this point, recruiters, hiring leaders,
6:16
anyone looking to make a hiring decision
6:18
is not so much interested in your passion, your drive.
6:24
They're more interested in can you do the job
6:27
and what have similar accomplishments look like before?
6:30
So this is where leading with your passion and your drive
6:34
is really going to work against you.
6:36
It's just another example of the way these decisions
6:39
get made along the way.
6:41
Now at the very end, if the about section
6:45
just kind of ends without a call to action,
6:48
it feels like, hey, learn more about my experience.
6:54
And what you really wanted to say instead
6:56
is a very clear, now that you've learned my experience,
6:59
here is the next step.
7:01
And that might look like, hey, if you're looking for
7:04
X kind of professional to bring X outcome,
7:07
go ahead and contact me here on LinkedIn
7:08
or send me an email.
7:10
Now does that mean that everyone who comes on your profile
7:12
is going to take one of those two actions?
7:15
Probably not, but you're creating the space
7:18
for those people who want to reach out to you
7:21
to go ahead and make that decision to say,
7:23
oh, right, it's time to reach out to this person.
7:26
Okay, so then we're going to go into your experience
7:28
but to get there, we've got to go through your activity.
7:32
And if you haven't had any activity in a year,
7:35
two years, then what that tells the hiring leader,
7:38
it communicates to them that you might not be active
7:42
And so now they're thinking, well,
7:43
maybe I shouldn't reach out to them
7:45
because it's going to take time to draft up a message
7:49
and hit that connect button, send the message
7:52
and I'm not going to hear anything back.
7:54
Let me go on someone else's profile
7:55
who's active on LinkedIn, who I know
7:57
is going to respond to me right away.
8:00
Quick heads up on being active on LinkedIn.
8:03
It's not going to make a break your search,
8:06
Anyhow, you'll see a lot more decision points
8:09
or micro decisions along the way
8:10
when you pop into your experience.
8:12
Specifically, all those see more links
8:15
and whether or not they continue on
8:17
to see your full experience
8:19
or if it's available all at once.
8:21
And there's multiple other sections here, right?
8:24
Education, licenses, volunteering, skills, et cetera.
8:27
I won't really spend too much there
8:29
because the bulk of hiring leader recruiters time
8:32
is probably going to be spent on the top portion,
8:35
the about section and your experience.
8:37
And in a perfect world, they would take action from there.
8:41
So as you look at your LinkedIn profile,
8:44
just holistically, whether you're at the header
8:47
in the about section or in the experience section,
8:50
keep in mind there's a difference
8:52
between the information you want to share
8:55
and the information they need to see.
8:58
So always be leaning toward what is it
9:01
that the hiring leader needs to see at this point.
9:05
Now, at the end of all this,
9:06
maybe you're in your car or maybe you're cleaning house,
9:10
maybe you're walking around, just remember this.
9:14
To create a profile that gets noticed
9:16
by recruiters and hiring leaders,
9:18
you need to think from their perspective.
9:22
And the goal today is that you had a light bulb moment
9:24
because that one light bulb moment
9:27
is much more important than any one small decision
9:30
that we talked about.
9:31
Your next step now is to look at your LinkedIn
9:34
and ask yourself, what micro-decision
9:37
is my LinkedIn profile leading them to make?
9:40
And by the way, if while you're looking at your profile,
9:43
you're wondering whether or not you need a total overhaul,
9:45
then you might want to head over to
9:47
the uncommoncareer.com slash intensive.
9:50
Because in that intensive, you're going to get clear
9:53
on what's strong within your LinkedIn profile,
9:55
but more broadly within your messaging.
9:58
What needs an overhaul and what really doesn't?
10:02
It's a solid space for you and I to get clarity
10:04
and for you to achieve those aha moments
10:07
that are more meaningful than any individual hack.
10:10
The moments that are going to turn your search around
10:12
and help you to really start seeing traction.
10:14
So again, if you're curious to learn more
10:16
or if you want to grab a time,
10:17
that's the uncommoncareer.com slash intensive.
10:22
I am so glad that we got a chance to chat a little bit more
10:25
about LinkedIn today.
10:27
I know we haven't talked about it in a minute
10:29
and I know last time you and I talked about LinkedIn,
10:32
it was more tactical, like very specific things to do.
10:36
But today was really more about perspectives,
10:39
the big picture aha moment.
10:41
And so I hope it was helpful for you.
10:43
Come back next week because we're going to keep talking
10:45
about all things job search.
10:47
But for now, I'll let Denise and I are praying for you
