"This Could Expose EVERYONE" – NBA Hits Clippers With $30M Fine and Five Lost Draft Picks

0:00The Clippers lose five first round draft picks. Okay, Tom, I'm only going to this one because only the two of us know about the NBA. The Clippers lose five first round draft picks. They get fined $30 million and they win zero championships. And Charles Barkley stays right because Charles Barkley has the best quote about the Clippers. He says, I've been rich. I've been poor. I've been fat. I've been skinny. The Clippers have sucked all along. Okay, the Clippers have sucked all along. So here's the story about the Clippers that people quietly, it's just kind of almost died off a little bit. I think we need to revive this Clipper scandal a little bit of what happened. The NBA landmark ruling against the Clippers is now a PR headache for ESPN. On August 17, ESPN cited unnamed sources saying the league had no evidence to bomb or fund or money for to Kawaii Leonard, framing that set up in ESPN versus Pablo narrative against Pablo Tori, whose Pulitzer winning reporting on Leonard sponsored ties the NBA findings just validated the NBA find the team.

1:07Clippers, $30 million, find Leonard $700,000 suspended ball more for a year while it might be accurate and awarding. The substance of the story was very misleading. It says PR executive Brian McWilliams NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said the story contains numerous and significant inaccuracies. Tori said ESPN never ran statements standing by is reporting ESPN's shams. Karania was then criticized for saying on TV that Leonard did not have any knowledge while noting the pocket that he pocketed tens of millions of dollars fancy the outcome, which is starkly in contrast and ESPN reporting McWilliams said the audience just needs an explanation added consultant Sam Gossier. Tom thoughts on the story. So I'll tell you what I think about this story. I think there's a couple things going on here and they all stink. Number one, the NBA incredibly created an even bigger distraction to move eyes away from the WNBA and distraction in the summer of embarrassment and incompetence. Number one, I think.

2:08But number two, I think they need to be careful about this. Are they sure that everybody else is clean pat? Are you sure because that was the argument by some of the players that admitted in baseball. What was going on with steroids? Remember that there were some players that admitted it and said, dude, you have no idea how widespread this was and the even these players that were involved were saying, I think the league liked it because it was high scoring and it was excitement and it was home runs and we had come back from the strike. Right now what I think you people at the pay attention you people time like people go. But I mean the audience. The audience needs to understand what you mean you people go ahead continue. I'm with you just. You mean you take me to Bernie and no, no, I'm just telling you traffic under arrest. But 12 years ago, members Steve Bommer got the NBA out of it. That old sterling and sterling had the lawyers and the ability to get that thing clogged in court so that they couldn't force him to sell and they were like crap.

3:09What do we do? Bommer put $2 billion in cash down. He also then remember what else he did. He built a $2 billion stadium without a penny of public money. He supported getting NBA back into Seattle. He thinks the team should be there back as soon as possible. He also supported the Sacramento Kings with what they were doing going through things. So is he guilty or innocent as what they're charging? I don't know. I'll leave that to the allegations of the NBA and to their their own court as they have it. But there were 29 other owners pat that benefited from what Bommer did and have seen their franchises go up by billions and billions of dollars. And I think the timing of this and the public nature of this stinks. That's what I think. I want to know, I mean the NBA knows how to do secret suspensions, don't they? Let's not go there, but they certainly know how to do that. But this whole thing to me really stinks.

4:10There have been when you do enforcement, you're trying to do things in salary cap, the creativity of owners will run faster than enforcement. That's create that's how entrepreneurship works. It'll work faster than you can put guardrails. And what this also says is all argue the other way that the reason that they paid some of the money is because some of these players were worth it. And under the current split and collective bargaining, they couldn't get the dollars they were worth. And it only takes one owner to say, you know what, I want to get you. I'm going to break this, but this is the way you're going to do it. But I think the whole thing stinks. Okay, by the way, so the position the Clippers came out of general counsel wrote out a whole thing saying this is completely unfair because Bomber alone, you know how much legal fees Bomber spent on this 50 million hours of just legal fees on this. Okay, on top of that, if you remember, there was a company that was an LA company that the Clippers came allegedly and said, hey, you give so they did a sponsorship deal with. A quiet Leonard, I don't know what the company's name was inspiration aspiration, something like that aspiration, and they gave a $28 million dollars endorsement deal to quiet.

5:15But guess what happened to this aspiration company? They went bankrupt. So wait a minute. What are you talking about? So they lose this five years of first round draft pick if the Clippers flip and say, oh, really? You're going to do this to us? No problem. The Clippers now go higher investigators. If you don't think they've already done that, they're going to go in indirectly drop stories on three, five, 10 other organizations that have done this with different players. And so if this goes through and this is public humiliation like this to the Clippers. I think what Thomas saying is correct. You could have a few other teams in a next six, 12, 24 months that may be dealing with a similar story like this. If not, how about all the other players? Stay warrior player. Oh, wait, you mean to tell me other people haven't creatively found the way to funnel money to players? Really? You don't remember how magic Johnson got 5% equity in the Lakers 40 years ago. I don't know what the number was, but he got equity in the Lakers. Yeah. This is pre like you couldn't do it anymore. But I think magic got a ton of equity in the Lakers because everybody wanted magic Johnson.

6:17And Jerry Bus helped them. What was it? Yeah, magic Johnson sold his 4.5% stake in the Lakers October 2020. For roughly 27 to 30 million dollars. By the way, you know what that 4.5% would have been worth today? 500 million dollars. Yeah. Actually, no 600 million dollars today because it's 4.5% on 12 billion dollars. So why sell it? Why do you sell? Because he probably at the time it was a lot of money when he sold it. He didn't know if it was going to get this high. Adam thoughts on the story. Yeah, I mean, look, look, there's what. Then I'll go ahead. Keep going. Look, I think I feel like teams always come up with creative ways to basically for compensation. Did I miss something? You go ahead with your amateur. Listen, you know, you mean that's it. It just went. It went. Oh my God. That's all freaky. Look, you remember when the Mets, they signed I think Bobby Bonilla to like a 20 year contract. Yep. And like they paid him like a million dollars a year. There's still a pain in there's still paying him. There's creative ways to have. Deferred compensation or workarounds or circumvent the situation.

7:20But you know the bottom line is you want to have an ROI on your investment, right? So if you're going to do these things, the shady things, these questionable things, these potentially illegal things, you're actually going to want to have some sort of return on your investment that actually chose. Wow, we want a championship. Wow, we really did well. The Clippers, self-stil perennial losers. The Clippers are the antithetical Achilles heel of the Lakers. And I'm using Achilles heel as a reason, shout out to goby right there. The Clippers have done all this to just become bigger losers. That's a big a problem I have. Now, we're going to find out exactly what happens here. I think still, Balmer is I think banned for a year. It's to pay 30 million dollars. But the challenge that I have is, are you telling me, why is basically getting off Scott free here? He's paying how much? 700,000 dollars. Steven A Smith. 8:2440, 50 million dollars a year, or he can pay, can play and actually make no money this year. But to play an entire year and basically have only get to lose 700,000 dollars to me is absurd. Yeah, because are you telling me the coil runner at no clue was going on? No, no, no, no, no, no. He's innocent. I'm so with you. And then on top of that, the load manager talking about ROI, they got to be in play. Yeah. And so, by the way, this isn't the signature text. This has happened. That was the, so this has happened in the past before. And it happened with, if you remember, with Joe Smith, Minnesota with Kevin Micheal, they had the power for them, three and a half million dollars because they said that we're going to give you 86 million dollars. Hush, hush, take the smaller contract. Kind of like what Otani, they did with the Dodgers, but Dodgers did it in the open. They cheated in the open, which is respectful. They, they say it's probably, yeah, they, they say it openly the way they decide they, they did the contract to win the back to back. And we'll see what happened this year. By the way, both judge and Otani are injured right now. So, judges been hurt since May 31st. Yeah, it's just rewri, rice has done a good job.

9:26She'll shout out to him. But here's what I'll say. The, the Minnesota timber wolves, when they went through this, they lost draft picks, then they lowered it. So they were supposed to lose five, they ended up only losing two. So I do think as they, their lawyers comes back to the NBA, they're, because you know what, five first round draft picks means you don't even have anything to trade for. I mean, you're, you're crushed on what you could do. On what you could do. On what you could do. But we'll see, because your team isn't good and you don't have first round draft. And Balmer was the kind of an owner that actually goes to the games like Cuban. That's right. He sits on the side. So now you're suspicious for one, you can't even go to the games. I don't know. I don't know what happens. So who do you put this on? You put this on Steve Balmer? No, no, no. Because I think Lauren's Frank is, was there a, uh, president of basketball operations? I think he's also suspended for another, everything rises and falls on the owner. I mean, what else do you want to say? Well, the bucks, the bucks, the bucks there. But let me point one thing out. The NBA is kicking a guy is, they just kicked Steve Balmer and the groin. And he's a guy with steel balls who went up against the freaking United States of America

10:30versus Microsoft and let the US government kick him in the balls. And he wasn't wearing a cup and he got through all of it. So this guy, it's great. And by the way, and by the way, I'll take something else. Who's the wealthiest owner in the NBA? Balmer. By what factor? Who's number two? 10X, five X. He's worth almost $150,000,000. Dan Gilbert of the Cleveland Cavaliers, 32. Yeah. He's a hundred billion dollars. He's the, not only is he the alpha, the other owners should be getting behind this guy. Yeah. Can I make one just very, very, because you know me, I'm more of, you know, soccer, baseball, football. I just, because you, you just pointed something out, I have to do this. Like I just want to point out how superior that NBA analysis is over yours. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. Like it's shocking. No matter how. Adam, like it, I love you to death.
