Welcome to this day in history. It's April 1st, and if you are a person prone to pulling
practical jokes and pranks on your friends, well then, today is the most popular day to
do it.
Today is, of course, April Fool's Day, a tradition that dates back to the early 1700s when
the English started an annual custom of playing jokes on one another. The exact origins of
April Fool's remain unclear, but some historians trace it back to 1582 when parts of Europe transitioned
from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, marking the new year on January 1st instead of
late March. People who were slow to make this change were regarded as Fool's and became
frequent targets of jokes during this time of year.
The surprising fact, on April Fool's Day in 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers
were experiencing a record spaghetti crop, an aired footage of people harvesting noodles
from trees.
Also on this day, in 1945, U.S. troops landed on Okinawa. In 1970, President Richard Nixon
signed legislation banning cigarette ads from TV and radio, and in 1984, musician Marvin
Gay passed away.
That's all for today. Come back tomorrow to learn a little bit more about the world around
you, be kind to yourself and others, and enjoy the rest of your day.
