It's March 12, and on this day, 23 years ago, a story that captivated the nation's attention for nearly a year came to an end.
On this day in 2003, 15-year-old Elizabeth Smart was finally found in Sandy, Utah, nine months after being abducted from her family's home.
When found, Smart, who called herself Augustine, initially denied to the police that she was Elizabeth.
Undeterred, police tooker and her captors in separate cars to the Salt Lake City Police Department, where she was reunited with her family.
Her kidnappers, Brian David Mitchell, a drifter whom the smarts had briefly employed at their house, and his wife, Wanda Barzi, were charged with kidnapping, as well as burglary and sexual assault.
Surprising fact, police later discovered that Mitchell had also tried to kidnap smarts cousin several weeks after taking Elizabeth, and added that crime to the list of charges against him.
Also on this day in history in 1894, Coca-Cola was sold in glass bottles for the first time.
In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt held his first fireside chat.
