Welcome to this day in history.
At 4 a.m. on March 28th, 1979,
one of the worst accidents in U.S. nuclear power history began when a pressure valve
in the units to reactor at three mile island in Pennsylvania failed to close.
Cooling water contaminated with radiation drained from the open valve into nearby buildings,
causing the core to dangerously overheat.
Although no one outside the plant was harmed,
the crisis significantly eroded the American public's confidence in nuclear power safety.
In fact, no new nuclear reactors were approved in the U.S. for decades after the accident.
Surprising fact, President Jimmy Carter visited three mile island several days later to help calm fears.
In addition to farming peanuts,
Carter was a trained nuclear engineer who had helped dismantle a damaged Canadian reactor while serving in the U.S. Navy.
Also on this day in history, in 1939, the Spanish Civil War ended.
In 1969, the 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower died.
And in 1984, the Baltimore Colts famously packed up and moved to Indianapolis in the middle of the night.
