Adults and a child perished in those flames, an EMS official with the bad news.
We had a total of nine victims from this assignment.
Like the commissioner stated, three of them were deceased.
We also had two that were critical condition removed to area hospitals.
It was a four alarm official say which got no help from the wind in the area whipping up the
flames and at one point we thought we had some firefighters trapped.
Ten10Win's newsman MacRill Zimburg rushed to the scene for us.
He is speaking with fire officials and he'll join us live later in the broadcast with more reporting.
This is on every avenue near college point.
At least eight fire trucks still on the scene.
They'll be careful if you're traveling in that area and stay with Ten10Win's
for the very latest developments.
No word on what started that fire.
Well, watch out for those kids.
That is the mantra right now for the mayor's office, the city lowering the speed
limit around school zones invoking a law that has not been used much since it was passed.
Mayor Mamdani is slowing down traffic for child and school safety.
We are going to reduce the speed limit to 15 miles per hour outside all eligible 2300 school zones.
A total of 1300 zones will see the reduction by the end of the year.
The others will be completed by 2029.
Fabiola Mendieta Quapio has been advocating since she lost her five-year-old son,
Brian, to traffic violence.
This is not just about my child.
This is not about our kids.
This is also about your kids, your nephews, your grandkids.
Officials say this is not about generating fines but moving drivers into compliance.
Julia Papa, Ten10Wins on 92.3 FM.
Yeah, Mamdani, if he has it his way,
we'll have all of the school zones down to 15 miles per hour by the year 2029.
That's the game plan at least.
Well, the city streets have been a mess this winter.
No doubt.
Thanks to all the snow and that long string of days with temperatures
which fell well below freezing.
That's why the DOT lost the weekend.
Blitz, where they feel more than 7,000 potholes it says here.
Mamdani says since he took office more than 50,000 potholes have been fixed
with an average response time of about two days.
He says this is about more than simply ensuring a smooth ride for New Yorkers.
He says it's about making sure our streets are safe and accessible for everyone.
A man who served 19 years in prison after being convicted of robbery
about to be a free man again.
Brooklyn, D.A. Eric Gonzalez,
moving to vacate Kenneth Wendley's conviction
after an investigation identified two other suspects who then confessed
and testified that Wendley had nothing to do with that crime.
Wendley became a suspect after using a money order that was stolen from an elderly victim.
Said he bought the money order from two men he knew from the neighborhood,
but that was the extent of his involvement.
Many always maintained he had nothing to do with robbing the guy.
Prosecutors say a new investigation confirmed Wendley's claims that he was not guilty.
19 years he's been in there.
19 years of a 20-year sentence.
Well, boy.
March Madness taking over the Big Apple, especially out in Queens,
where St. Joe just captured the biggest title for a second straight year.
Their crushing win over Yukon has fans dreaming big
about their chances in this year's NCAA tournament.
Amazing, like my dad was telling me I was just like the 80s again,
like a right back at top.
There's a lot of energy and like a lot of crowds at noise and good vibes.
This is a title, but right now we all crazy about St. John's.
Hope they go all the way.
Yeah, hope so.
Red storm, five seed in the east region.
Everybody they take on Northern Iowa,
Friday night in San Diego,
two other schools from our area also in the big tourney.
Hofstra, of course, which is making its first appearance since 2001.
And L.I.U.
Go, fellas, go, go, go.
Sports betting has become a huge business,
but some fans are taking things too far,
harassing and even threatening players and coaches.
Now there's a push to put an end to that.
With March Madness underway,
many people are placing big bets and doubling down.
Assemblymember Charles Levine is introducing a bill
that would bend anyone from placing its sports bet.
If they're caught harassing athletes, coaches, or even officials.
We have seen truly dramatic and troubling increase
in the instances of people involved in athletics being threatened.
He says the crackdown is to protect athletes
and anyone working in the sports industry.
A lot of my governmental colleagues sound more like
so-called professional wrestlers than they sound like legislators.
And that sets a tone.
Athletes across the country are speaking out,
saying the bets are causing them to receive threats.
Mary Limbuckley, 10-10 wins on 92,
3 FM in Hudson Square.
Yeah, that's not good.
And we are watching things in Queens right now.
Two people heard critically,
three others killed after a big apartment fire there.
10-10 wins, newsman John Mac Rosenberg joining us live now
with the story from Flushing.
Hey, John, the latest.
Keep calling it John, Mac.
Larry, the smell of smoke took over college point boulevard today
because of how strong the wind was.
It made things more difficult for firefighters.
Two adults, one child, are dead in this fire.
It was on all three floors of the building.
The top two floors are apartments.
At one point, a staircase collapsed,
trapping two firefighters,
chief of operations, Kevin Woods.
Those two firefighters fell through the stairs.
They were extricated with the help of our other firefighters.
230 fire and EMS personnel were here.
There are a total of nine victims
among the six that lived.
Three of them jumped out of the building.
Another was rescued with a portable ladder.
Mac Rosenberg, 10-10 wins on 92, 3 FM live in Flushing.
That is so, so sad.
Three people killed one of them a child
and the others had to jump out the window.
We'll continue monitoring developments out there.
Thank you, Mac.
