Thanks so much for joining us on this Labor Day Monday morning. I'm Laura Jared alongside Halley Jackson, Savannah and Craig are enjoying the holiday. Off could be with you this holiday. Good to be with you too. We want to start right with that frightening scene in South Florida today. Officials now say five people are dead. Three others are in critical condition after a cargo plane working for Amazon over a runaway at Miami International Airport. Yeah, the plane striking multiple vehicles before coming to a stop near a parking lot that crash, prompting a ground stop at the airport causing widespread flight delays and cancellations. It comes during a busy holiday weekend with millions of people expected to be on the move today, heading home amid spiking gas prices and those long airport lines.

4:13Even bright spots though for travelers and anyone throwing a Labor Day get together. Weather wise, things are looking relatively quiet today. We have it all covered for you, including your full forecast from Angie last member. We do begin here with that crash in Miami and NBC's George Solese. George, good morning. Laura, good morning to you. There's still an active scene here where five people tragically lost their lines. If you look behind me, you can actually see part of that cargo plane where it came to rest on its belly. Now this morning, two of four of the runways are still closed here at Miami International this as the FAA and NTSB work together to figure out what went wrong here. An investigation is underway this morning after this stunning scene at Miami International Airport. Looks like we have an aircraft over and around the runway. An Amazon branded cargo plane fearing off the runway and smashing into cars before bursting into flames Sunday afternoon. The plane coming to rest on its belly near a roadway and warehouses.

5:15Guys, the plane's on fire, the plane's on fire. Put your gamefaces on. First responders surrounding the aircraft. Authorities say at least five people were killed and a handful of others were seriously injured. It's not clear yet if the victims were on the plane or on the ground. The airplane did strike a couple of vehicles that required a couple of victims that were actually trapped in the vehicles. Here you can see the plane landing moments before impact. Nearby truck driver witnessed the crash. The first order of business for investigators get the aircraft's flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. The NTSB is going to look at why this airplane overran the runway it was landing on. The FAA says the Boeing 767 cargo plane operated by 21 air departed from San Juan Puerto Rico

6:20before landing in Miami. Officials say more than 200 first responders arrived to begin rescue operations, including attempting to reach the pilot and co-pilot in the cockpit. We got a little bit closer so you can see the cargo plane here. You can see the primary on the side, the number of fire personnel you might be able to see even the bird marks there on the side of the plane. In a statement, Amazon saying in part, we are heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss. As you can imagine that crash sparking an hour's long ground stop here at MIA during the busy holiday weekend now, Amazon also saying that they will be cooperating with the investigation. The NTSB chair will be on the ground here today to provide an update to hopefully shed some light on this tragedy. Laura? George Lee is leading us off here. Thank you, George, for more on the crash and the investigation. We want to turn to NBC's Tom Castello who covers aviation for us.

7:20Tom, good morning. What are some of the key questions officials are going to be asking in this early stage of the investigation? I think that George touched on some highlights right there. How fast? But the priorities are going to be on recovering the black boxes that we talked so much about, right? The cockpit voice and the flight data recorder. They will send those recorders to the NTSB lab here in Washington for a full readout. And they're going to be interviewing the crew as quickly as possible. They want to hear from them how and why did this accident happen the way it did. The data so far suggests they were coming in very high and very fast. In fact, flight radar 24 shows the plane was flying in more than 180 knots, more than 200 miles per hour, when it flew over the threshold for the runway. But it was too high at that point. It didn't touch down until it was well down the runway already. At which point it was going at about 180 miles per hour. And the data shows the plane then simply couldn't stop in time. They run out of runway. Investigators will surely ask the crew why they didn't simply wave off the landing and

8:22go around, right? Now Miami does not have the E-Mass or Restorbeds at the end of its runways like many airports do. Those are crushable concrete blocks meant to stop planes if they overrun the runway and stop them very fast. This plane went off the runway at about 120 miles per hour very fast. And the 767 cargo plane really a workhorse for big cargo carriers. It's got a very good reputation. Investigators will also be looking very closely at the plane's maintenance records. Sure, some questions and a lot to unpack there. Tom, thank you. Appreciate it. Also this morning, millions of people are on the move today, hitting the skies and the roads as travel for Labor Day picks up. NBC's Ryan Chandler is in Dallas with what you need to know if you're heading out. As Labor Day travelers get ready to make their way home, a weekend of severe storms threaten to slow their trips down. The dangerous storm surge.

9:24Flooding homes and roadways in Southern California. And Louisiana creating tough travel conditions. But for drivers, that's not the only bump in the road. Gas prices are still at record highs. The national average, now around 415, a gallon. The highest prices at the pump have ever been on Labor Day. And about a dollar more than they were this time last year. I just filled up and it was almost $80. To save, experts say avoid filling up at gas stations near major highways where prices tend to be higher and try to avoid peak traffic, which can slow you down. Roads are expected to be busiest today between 2 and 5 pm with I-90 into Seattle and I-93 between Boston and Manchester expected to see the most return congestion. And the skies will be crowded too. This thing crazy. The USA officers preparing to screen more than 2.6 million passengers today alone. Some travelers prolonging the already extended weekend to avoid the crowds.

10:26We don't want to be in the rush on Monday with everybody else, so we just extended to an extra day. And while weather impacts on flight schedules are expected to be minimal, experts advise delays and cancellations for any reason can have major ripple effects during the busy holiday. Like the Amazon cargo plane crash in Miami. There are some sort of issue could occur at an airport that you're flying through or even to. That could cause some delays. We always want travelers to be on the offense, having that fallback flight in mind, giving them some extra time to get to the airport. All to ensure a smooth return from summers on official send-off. And Halle as we race toward fall, I always feel like this last half of the year just flies by. The next busy travel season with the holidays right around the corner, the expert tip you can act on today. Make sure you're staying nimble, get a flexible or refundable ticket. You can also set up price alerts with an airline if you're trying to fly over the holidays. So if a price goes down, you can get it readjusted.

11:27All right. A lot to watch today and in the weeks ahead. Thank you, Ryan. For more on the weather piece of this holiday puzzle, let's bring in the Saturday's today's Angie Lastman. She's in firm. Mr. Roker this morning has a first check of the weather. What you looking at? You know, it's not too shabby for a holiday, I think across the country. We've got a couple minor trouble spots that could cause some, again, minor delays, but mostly we're looking to parts of the Northern Plains for that and parts of the Southeast. I-95, I-10, I-20 all could be a little bumpy, maybe I-90 and I-35 as well. Otherwise when we're looking to the airports in those locations, possible delays, but it's not a whole lot of them. Just a handful. Places like Minneapolis and Boise at Atlanta, New Orleans, all locations I would watch. And specifically Orlando and Miami airports likely to see some travel delays with those afternoon thunderstorms. The other thing you'll have to watch today, temperatures. We've got, really, those heat alerts stretched across parts of the Southern to Central Plains. This is leaving us once again, you guessed it, with warmer than normal temperatures well into the 90s, if not triple digits in some spots. We've got, feels like temperatures 103 to 104 in Little Rock and Dallas today.

12:28And we keep it kind of staying above normal and warmer than normal. We're not letting summer go just yet, even as we get into tomorrow. 100 degrees in Tulsa, 92 in Tuscaloosa, but feeling like 98. Heat continues all the way into the late week with temperatures well into the 90s for places like Lexington guys. Not a bad holiday Monday, Angie. Thank you. Turning it out, it would appear as to be a chilling case of political violence. Officials say an armed man lunged at a candidate running for governor in Ohio as she spoke at a local fair, hurting several people before he was arrested. Our Maggie Vespa has the details for us. Maggie, good morning. Howly good morning, the local sheriff now IDing the man who they say lunged a doctor, Amy Acton, a Democrat running against former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswami, the attack drawing condemnation from across the political spectrum and what appears to be just the latest example in a growing pattern of violence. Concern growing this morning after a frightening attack on Ohio, gubernatorial candidate Dr. Amy

13:28Acton. She was speaking at a fair near Youngstown Sunday when authorities say 38-year-old Patrick Havas began pushing his way through the crowd before lunging toward Dr. Acton. Her campaign says security stopped him from reaching the candidate, but several bystanders were injured. The extent of those injuries unclear. Authorities say Havas, whose motive is unknown, was carrying two handguns, a set of brass knuckles and a taser, although none of the weapons were brandished during the incident. An armed individual came barreling through the crowd, pushing people out of the way, actually knocked down a couple senior citizens and elderly people in the crowd right in front of Dr. Acton. Acton's campaign, writing in a statement, they're praying for the recovery of those injured. This kind of violence has no place in Ohio. Her opponent, former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswami, also blasted the thwarted attack, adding candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence. It's just the latest and a frightening pattern of political violence, up more than 30 percent

14:30between 2024 and 2025, according to one analysis from Princeton. Among other instances, multiple assassination attempts on President Trump's life, a gunman's attempt to storm this year's White House Correspondence Dinner, the near bombing of New York Mayor Zoran Mamdami's home back in March, and last year's fatal shooting of two Democratic state lawmakers in Minnesota. Now, in Ohio, fair, the latest apparent target of political violence in America. So again, Acton herself, a medical doctor, was not hurt and photos actually show her helping victims in the moments after the attack. As far as the suspect, it's not clear if he has an attorney, but jail record show he's been held on two counts of assault and one of disorderly conduct with official charges expected soon. Haley, Maggie, thank you very much. There is much more to get to, including the long-awaited return of college football fans, packing stadiums, coast to coast for the first big weekend of games. 15:34of the sport, NBC's Sam Brock joins us with all of the action. Hey, Sam. Laura, good morning. Wild is the perfect word for this. Let's start with that Michigan, Western Michigan thriller. Had all the makings of a classic David Goliath upset until it was not. The review of a failed last second, Hail Mary showed the game in broadcast clocks were off by one second, giving Michigan another chance to pull off a miracle which they did. The Lane Kiffin's LSU Tigers pummeling Clemson without two former NFL players that he kept off the roster amidst a growing controversy. The college football season kicked off this weekend with plenty of action on the field, including this late night thriller. Ole Miss defeating Louisville with a 48 yard field goal in the final moments. But it wasn't the only dramatic finish of the weekend. On Saturday, the 16th ranked Michigan Wolverines appearing to lose at home to heavy underdog Western Michigan after a last second Hail Mary fell incomplete. But the Wolverines granted a second chance, and quarterback Bryce Underwood launched

16:34another pass, and this one was caught for the win. The Big Ten defending the decision to add a second back to the clock, posting this video, appearing to show the initial pass touched by a Western Michigan player with one second remaining, even though the broadcast clock showed zero. In Baton Rouge, an all-timeer showdown quickly turning into an LSU blowout after they stomped Clemson by 41 points. But new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin's debut was already under the spotlight for trying to put former pro players on his college team, with LSU in the middle of a legal battle over whether some X NFL players can return to college. A Louisiana judge recently ruling the players could compete in this college season, though the SEC passed rules banning it, and the NCAA has also slammed the idea. You shouldn't be allowed to come back and take places and spaces away from kids who want to be playing at the college collegiate level. Also overnight, a blowout at historic Lambo Field with Notre Dame crushing Wisconsin,

17:37and one of the high notes during the weekend, not during play. The University of Tennessee paying tribute to the Queen of Country, Dolly Parton. The vols, of course, are showing out for Dolly there. If that is not enough football for you guys, guess what? The NFL kickoff is just two days away. The pros are going to be back in action this Wednesday night with a rematch of last year's Super Bowl showdown between the champion Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. You can catch that game right here on NBC and on Peacock. These two franchises have played each other lifetime, 21 times postseason and regular season. The Seahawks have scored 437 points. The Patriots have scored 436. How do you just rattle that off the top of your head? Because I just have numbers floating around up here and I have really good people helping out with another one. We have a busy half hour ahead though for you starting with this closely watched Lindsey Clancy case. The case everyone's talking about so many questions about what comes next after a Miss trial was declared, including the biggest of all. Will she be retried in the deaths of her children? Our Valerie Castro is joining us now with the latest on that Valerie. Good morning. Yeah, guys. Good morning. This trial was full of drama and emotion and then a bombshell outcome. The jury deadlocked again after being sent back twice to reach a consensus. Now Lindsey Clancy could potentially be tried all over again in a case that's riveted the nation and put postpartum depression and psychosis in the spotlight. This morning Lindsey Clancy's future is still a question mark after the deadlocked jury

21:52and her triple murder trial stunned the courtroom Friday with no verdict. And I'm going to declare a Miss trial. Her attorney determined to keep fighting for an acquittal petitioning the state Supreme Court in Massachusetts to intervene and remove the one juror believed to be the single holdout. That's all for his time to file a single justice appeal for this travesty. But the state's high court denying the defense's request. And now the district attorney left to contemplate a retrial while many question if an impartial jury pool is even possible. The week's long televised trial was watched around the entire country and got huge attention on social media and in person too. At the news of a Miss trial, her ex-husband Patrick Clancy who'd testified in the case, calling the prospect of a retrial extraordinarily painful. President Trump also weighing in. She did a horrible, horrible thing. It can't be a price. It's going to be mental institution or jail or something. Clancy admitted to killing her three children in 2023 before trying to take her own life.

22:55The jury tasked with deciding if she was criminally responsible despite the defense arguing she had postpartum psychosis. The stalemate coming after nearly six weeks of heart-wrenching testimony at times leaving Clancy sobbing. For the time being, Clancy will continue her life under psychiatric care at the state hospital, the dramatic case continuing to highlight postpartum mental health and the lives of those at impacts, honored with a butterfly release outside the courthouse. The district attorney remaining non-committal Friday as to whether he intends to push ahead with a retrial. But if that is the next step, the judge says he'd like to see a trial take place as soon as this fall. A status hearing is set for later this month. Guys, Valerie, thank you very much. All right, let's bring in NBC News, legal analyst Danny Savales. Danny, good morning to you. Let's talk strategy for a second.

23:56If they actually go through with a retrial, they can obviously change the charges, they can change things up however they want. Do you think we will see a difference now that they've had this focus group of you? There will be no difference in charging. I believe they will retry her. I believe they will keep all the counts. And I believe that in order to retry her, if they change their theory now, I think that would be very damaging to them. The other reason I think they will retry her is that this is an unusual case in that, no matter what happens, even if she's not guilty by reason of insanity, she will be placed in a secure facility. So in a way, the prosecution can't lose. They can lose in the sense that she could get a not guilty by reason of insanity. But no matter what, she will be sequestered either in prison or in a secure facility where she is monitored. What about the idea of a fair trial? You heard some of the questions raised about that, finding impartial jurors, but you and I have talked before. The question is not finding jurors who have never heard of a case, right? That's not the bar. Exactly right. And that's not likely to happen anyway.

24:57A lot of people have heard of this case, but we have high profile trials all the time. A couple of reasons why I don't think this is going to be an issue. Number one, she had a trial. Yes, it ended in a mistrial, but that happens all the time, even in cases that are not infamous. And secondly, so the fact that they couldn't reach an agreement doesn't really mean that she didn't have a fair trial. And secondly, it could be argued that if anything, Lindsey Clancy had supporters outside that courthouse. And the Massachusetts rule really speaks only to a finding of prejudice against the defendant. And again, as you already know, it's not whether a juror has ever heard of the case. It's whether or not they can set everything aside and decide it on the facts in that courtroom. Danny, very quickly, how does the family factor in here? We actually haven't heard much from the grandparents, but we have heard from Patrick talking about our retroud being extraordinarily painful. What if they don't want to go through with this? The difficult reality for victims and their families is that prosecutors are not their lawyers. And the victims are not the government's clients. So it often is, unfortunately, for them that the prosecutors make a decision to continue,

26:01to charge a case, to prosecute a case, sometimes even without the family's blessing. All right, Danny, we'll see where it goes. Thank you, appreciate it. Thanks, Danny. 31:12You can see we've got Hurricane Lowell, Category 3, 115 mile per hour winds. It's weakened a little bit over the past two days. But it's still going to remain kind of at least a cat two or three as it passes to the west of the Hawaiian island chain. Notice we've got these hurricane warnings up for those most western islands. That likely is where we'll see those impacts that come in the form of some heavy rain, potentially up to even more than a foot of rain in some of these spots. You can see Honolulu included in that, Hannah Lay as well up to 14 inches of rain will be watching for the rough surf as well. Meanwhile, we've also got tropical stormy reefs sitting basically west of Mexico. This is still hanging onto those winds at 65 miles per hour. It is not going to impact Southern California directly, but it will bring some heavy surf. We'll see maybe six to 10 foot waves in this area as well as the potential for some coastal erosion as this system sits offshore. And that's look at your forecast, guys. Angie, look who's joined us.
