2:03Good show for you today. Let me tell you exactly where we're going and where we're going to end up. Many parts, one team, I'll explain that in the third segment. Back in the middle of the show, we're going to have a word with Senior Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Tony Bacellin, Big Bowl, join us. I'll tell you why it starts at the top with leadership. Being a leader is different because you have to take a micro and macro view of the franchise. Where I'm going with that is a lot of fans want to change and even some members of the media. And I'm the same way, especially when it comes to things that I'm passionate about. You want to do everything really, really fast. It seems like when the Jaguars went 13 and 4 last year, after going 4 and 13 a year before that had happened quickly because it did happen quickly. But we have to caution ourselves. And the reason why you have to caution ourselves because the Jaguars have been in the playoffs before and they've had great seasons before and then all of a sudden the very next year, they don't have it. So I'm going to tell you today why it's important that leadership at the top is extremely valuable.

3:06Without talking too much about the past, I've had some major criticism of when organizations weren't aligned. And that's just not here in Jacksonville. That's many sports organizations. When there is no alignment, when it seems like the back end doesn't work with the front end and everybody has their own agenda and everyone has this idea that they are the reason why everything needs to be moving forward. So breath of fresh air last year happened with this team. Tony Beccilli took over as EVP. They brought in James Glassstone of course and they hired Liam Cohen. And though you hear from Liam Moore than anyone nationally and maybe even here locally, and that's the way it's supposed to be, there's still one voice that sounds like it permeates and it resonates with everyone. And it sounds like that's all three of those guys talking. And I think that happens when you get the proper leadership. This starts at the top. Big Bo is a hall of fame. They're the only one in Jaguars history. And he actually did that stuff on the field. And now he's leading this franchise off the field. And I think he's done a really, really good job. It does not surprise me.

4:07Anybody who listens to this show 17, 18 months ago, I said that that was a good idea. Tony knows football. He knows the organization. He knows the city. And I think sometimes people think that you have to, like you always have to sound like the smartest guy in the room. No, you just have to be smart enough to understand that you need to use the people around you. And that's what they've done with James Glassstone. That's what they've done with Liam Cohen. It doesn't seem like to me that anyone ever steps on anyone's toes. So what you have now is Jacksonville Jaguars front office that is kind of emblematic of the way I talk about the team also. And that's why I always mention that. I always mention alignment. And I always mention how important it is to have guys that are kind of yoke the same way, very, very competitive. And I told anybody who would listen, like, I'm going to give you an example. Trayvon Walker is a nice guy. Boy, you'll become a nice guy. But they played viciously on the field. But Sally was that same way as a player.

5:08And one of the things that I told people when I first met Liam Cohen and I first met James Glassstone and they were young and they had these fresh faces and they sounded all nice in the way that they did everything. And I'm thinking like, don't let them people fool you. And it's not like they were trying to fool or trick anybody. I said, these guys are tough. So the example that I'm using when I talk about all of these different people is you can be a nice guy off the field and be a tough guy on the field. And I think sometimes people equate being a tough guy on the field with also walking around acting like a tough guy. And it's not the exact same thing. This team plays just like those guys manage. And I believe that that is part of why they had so much success. Now, demonstrated performance is important. And it tells you one thing that history with the Jaguars tells you is that. What does it matter about last year? You have to do it again this year. At the end of last season, Liam Cohen came in and he looked like he was ready to go start calling plays again. He said, weren't good enough.

6:09Period. Making no excuses. We are going to own that. We are going to attack last year. And I think what he said was he described it in training camp this year. He said last year they were trying to find the edge this year. They are attacking those edges. How did they do that? How did we get here? They have been very transparent with behind the scenes stuff. Things that you have seen. The social media team does a great job of actually taking the transparency off and taking behind taking you, the fan behind the veil. And giving you an opportunity to see exactly what goes on. And I think that vulnerability in that exposure is a good thing because it shows me that they are not doing it for validation. They are doing it because they breed confidence. They want you to know exactly what they were thinking in hindsight. And then you can judge how it turns out. So this off season what they did and what I said is when the season ends, when they are 13 or 4, they lose the buffalo.

7:11And then they come back out and we start getting ready for draft season. And then we started to get ready for not just draft season but free agency. You do free agency first and then you do the draft. They didn't do a whole bunch but they did something. Adding Chris Rodriguez, a bigger back, then going out in the draft and then first they traded for Rukororo, someone in the trenches. And though he's 13, I think he'll still have an impact on this team. A lot of people believe that the Jaguar is kind of state the same and I vehemently disagree with that because when you add Rodriguez and you go with the manual pregnant and you continue to develop the offensive lineman that you had from last year. And then you draft Nate Borkerture who's known as a linebacker buster if you will. He goes and he gets to that second level. And then you go get Tannock Cosio, Redstone threat who is also someone else. And then you fix the road, you fix the infrastructure. It told me that the Jaguar said they needed some sandbags on their pocket.

8:14That they were self aware that what they needed to do was be bigger, stronger, faster and tougher. And it sounds a lot to me like they accomplished that. And then they got some guys healthy in their secondary. And I've been arguing with people for three or four weeks that this won't be the same team. They may not win 13 games, but they will, I think, be a very, very competitive team. So there's a difference and there's a balance between looking at the big picture, which is what Tony has to do in his role, I believe. But then being where you feed our every single day, James Glaston has to keep watching the roster along with Tony. Liam Cohen has to be that every day leader and to do that. I think this is really an organizational lead team. They are coach centric because the team does have the personality of Liam. And Liam kind of reminds me of Trevor a little bit when you hear him talk and grant you Densky and all that. The one wildcard is anything, he's a little different from everybody else, but I think it

9:18works. Like last year when Liam was asking him something, camp says, man, calm down, I got this. I got this. There's just this quiet confidence with this team. I'm going to ask Tony Bacelli a few questions about that confidence. Like, does it come from or does it stem from or is it connected to the fact that they go out and get competitors, guys that are super, super competitive that have traits that you lead with the competitiveness? I always say that competitors don't suck when things don't go their way. They're able to biopically focus on the next thing. They don't complain and they don't suck. They just get after and take those challenges and try to move forward. I talked to Tony a thousand times, but for some reason this feels a little bit different. Oh, T Wig love it. Love what you do. Love your podcast and I appreciate it. Beyond. All right. Thank you. First just a real quick of reflection. We're all look too far back because everybody's focused. Everybody's eyes are forward. 13 wins last year. I'm going to be honest with you man. I didn't expect it. I know you don't put a ceiling on yourself, but did that catch you a little bit by surprise? And if so, did it speed you up in your process a little bit when it comes to micro or well, the macro version of building this team? No, it's a fair question. I don't think I was surprised because I never put a number on it.

13:25And I don't think lamb or James did either. We've never talked about a number. I think from the first day we got this job is it was more about who do we want to be? What does it mean to be a Jaguar? What's the standard that's going to be in this organization of how we want to put football? And I think Liam did a great job of communicating that, leading the way and then holding that line throughout the season for the whole building, our players, our coaches, our support staff. And so I think what we talked about a lot and I think this is about the process. And you know, how do we operate day in and day out? And whatever the outcome is, that's going to be the outcome. Obviously we want to win games. That's why we're brought here is the Winf a ball games, but never put a number on it. And I think if I if the overall theme of last year that I think back on is disappointment because I think all three of us, I think everyone in this organization, our players, our coaches, support staff, we felt like things were left undone. Wait, and here at home against Buffalo.

14:25So I think more than anything coming in this year, there's a bunch of hungry people looking forward to the next opportunity. And with the same mindset, like, hey, going into week one, Cleveland, you know, new staff, doing a lot of, you know, a lot of new people coming in trying to figure out what they want to be. Yep. 30s to us last year. So we're looking forward to the opportunity to come out and find out what the 2026 jacks are all about. Yeah, man. So with that, not one first down can help you from last year, not one touchdown. And it none of that stuff, but you still can learn a lot. It's what sounds like what you learned is you don't like that feeling against Buffalo. I saw it at the exit interviews. Liam says, we weren't good enough. I mean, it was one of the first things that came out of his mouth. And I liked that part of it because that means, okay, we own it. This is where our feet are, but just like Liam says, when there's a good or bad play, you have to move forward. And that seems like what you guys have been able to do this off season. Yeah. I mean, I think you have to. I mean, I think you learn from the good and bad of the past.

15:25I think also at the same time, a little bit of pain remaining, reminding you of that feeling that you don't want to have. I think the whole buildings experience that. But at the same time, regardless of what happened, isn't going to help hurt or anything. Now, the only thing that can't hurt us is we don't learn. And so I think taking lessons from last year of how we can be better, how I can be better, how James can be better, how Liam better. We spent a lot of time with that. And again, Liam doesn't now stay in the job of keeping the main thing to main thing. And that's what happens in the grass. That's what we're trying to do. Get our players ready to be at their best. And that's what we got to go do because everyone was excited about last year. It was, that's great. You said it, T-Wig, it gets us nothing this year. You think the Cleveland Browns give one rip about us winning football game last year. And now they're coming in because they think they can beat us. And all right, let's go find out because at one o'clock on Sunday, all the talk, all the nonsense of the offseason and what move worked or didn't work or

16:30consensus boards or non-consensus board. Whatever you want to talk about, it doesn't mean anything. All that means is what happens between the white lines. And that's what we're preparing for. It's a great test against Cleveland. And I'm looking forward to see what our guys go do. Yeah, man, you can leave that consensus board stuff up to me. You ain't got to even address it. I've been slap boxing those people all offseason, man, because I know that you guys have about 50 people over there that you develop your own consensus. So as much as we like to sound smart on these podcasts, we're not smarter than the people that are doing it every day. When James talked about being nothing more than yourself, so I sat back and observed and I'm looking and I'm thinking like, you know, everybody that comes in here has a high floor, regard people pay attention to the ceiling with new acquisitions. But I pay attention to the high floor and I pay attention to all of the guys that you guys go and get. They seem like for lack of a better term football junkies like they love it. You got to kick these people out of that building, BJ Green and everyone that constantly works hard. Do you think that one characteristic or trait is something that is good for you guys

17:33because you won't have complacency after 13 and four. And I bring complacency up because of this. Think back to you guys when you played 97 and 99 made that big run the next year you didn't. I go to 2017 2018 you in the broadcast booth. It was a big disappointment. And then a few years back, you know, first year with Doug Peterson and then things go, go sour after that. Jaguar fans have a little bit of stock on syndrome. So I'm here every day trying to tell them, no, this is a little bit different. And I think that competitive advantage that all of these kids that you bring in and the proof of concept that a guy like Parker Washington and the rest of these guys have exhibited. I think that helps Liam. He has an easier job because now you don't have to motivate people. Well, I think a couple of things there. It's hard to win in this league. And I think one of the things you got to do is respect the journey and what's in front of us. And you can't be complacent because that's the quickest way to go loose football games. And nobody in this building is complacent. Now, does that guarantee you're going to win however many games?

18:35No, because we got to go play them. We got a lot of things happen across, you know, along the journey of this long season. But as far as the type of person that we want in this building, and this by the way, to wait, doesn't go just for our players. It's our coaches, it's our staff. I mean, there's a standard of how we operate and what we're looking for. And and the way I'd sum it up real simply, go find guys who care. Go find guys who care where this is important. Their jobs important. How they represent themselves is important. Their work ethic, the toughness, those are the type of individuals we're looking for. Where it comes to our players looking for football players. Hey, we're trying to build a football team. James says the best. You know, we're here to engineer the best football team we can and go find that. Go find guys that fit what our coaches want to do. How Liam wants to call it. But the underlying foundation of everybody in this organization needs to be better care. You better love football and you better care. Better be important. Because it's too hard otherwise.

19:36This is a hard game. It's not for everybody. And being a Jaguar is not for everybody. And so and that's okay. And so we're looking for those guys that understand what it means, the care. And then let's go play football because we have a lot of confidence in the process and what we're doing. As long as we stick true to who we are, we'll live with whatever comes. I got a big game coming up Sunday. It's game one. We want overreacting. Of course, I will overreacting. You'll see it on social. I got to overreact if things don't go the way that we want them to go. But I noticed in the off season, this is my last question for you. I noticed in the off season, the moves they make will tell you what they want to do. You add Chris Rodd-Rieger's. You get him annual pregnant. You add a big blocking tight end and then another big red zone target at tight end and not a whole bunch of that tells me that you all needed some more sandbags. You felt like you needed to be a little bit tougher, not necessarily in here, but physically stronger in order to impose your will on people. I think if you look at Liam wants to call the game all the way back to what he was off its coordinator at Tampa, balance the attack.

20:40What puts the most stress on the defense? Be able to control the line of scrimmage, run the ball, protect, take shots down the field. We want to be able to play all phases in a physical manner. I thought our team was very physical last year, but you're always trying to get better and trying to understand where you can improve. I think if you look at the decisions that were made, obviously we want to be more efficient in the run game. We want to continue to be that tough, hard-nosed team. If you look at the guys we've resigned and brought back guy Travon, that's what it means to be a Jaguar right there. Those are the type of guys on Terra Ground. These are guys that love ball that are tough, that are physical. That's just the mindset of how we want to play. I think that's, it mirrors how Liam sees the game. He's one of the great head coaches in my opinion, obviously I'm biased, but he's proven that over a long stretch now, both at the college level and the pro level, the guy can call plays. He sees the game and wants to call it, and our job is to make sure the way we build this team and engineer it.

21:44This is where James is elite. James does a great job with our scouting staff and pro staff, both called Jam Pro. Identifying the right type of individual, the right skill set that fits of how we want to play. It's not, you know, again, it's not for everybody. It's a way we want to play. And the coordination between James and Liam is outstanding and the communication between those two's outstanding. And we just got to keep on going because hey, it's hard. And we'll go back to where we started this. Nothing's promised, nothing's guaranteed because what we did last year, as much fun as that was, and in this appointment, we were not a good enough football team last year. We have to get better. And now we have a chance to prove it for the first time on Sunday. And we'll find out, and we'll find out what the reaction is for everybody else in this one. Yeah, we will. Just a little bit behind the veil. You know, just the EVP. You're kind of a friend of mine a little bit too. We done some radio back together back in the day. Back when there was chain link fences over there with daily places and y'all sweating out two times a week.

You heard from Tony Besell at the Senior Executive Vice President of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tony, he sounds so grounded, man. And those are the sort of conversations that we've had, maybe a little bit less organized and structured than that, but we talked over the years and through the years about the Jaguars. And that hasn't changed. The way that he speaks about this team and the way that he speaks about what he thinks should happen has not changed from the time that he was doing the doing radio and was a member of the organization, but wasn't running the organization. Now that he's running the organization, it has not changed. So now you see why I have so much confidence in the Jacksonville Jaguar. The man is, he's similarly sat there and said, look, we got to do it.

25:57And that's another way of saying something. And I say each and every day here on this podcast demonstrated performance. Wanting it, the raw raw, going through all of that, it is what you do. Remember the choreography thing that I bring up all the time. It's showtime. This is Chris Brown and Usher on stage, dancer, man, you got to be in step, man. And if you're not, everybody in that brother's going to see it, right? So that is the pressure that comes along with, with playing in the NFL and for this city, but they're not resting on anything. Liam's fired up too, man. I'm trying to tell you, you can see it in people's faces. And that's why Tony has so much confidence in those guys. And I think one of the biggest things that you can take from what he said is, Liam does a great job of leading this team, saying the right things, doing the right things. You don't have a situation where Tony or James are overbearing. I didn't want to ask questions that I thought Liam should answer. I didn't want to ask questions that I thought James should answer.

26:59No, I looked at it from the view from the top, the leader of men. And sometimes being a leader, you don't say much. I learned that in the military. One of the least talkative people was my like commander, the Colonel, the chief of security. They never said anything. They be disciplined in you with paperwork. You wouldn't even know it. They'd be like, how you doing? Airmen? Because it's not the job to be all over your Liam. It's camp. It's those guys. That's what camp is good at too, man. Camp is like the resident pit bull. He'll jump all over you now. Liam's a little bit different. Liam's the kind of dude that you don't want to disappoint because you have this reverence. It's like a fear of disappointing him. And I think that's a big thing with this team. But we were spot on when we talked about the type of players that the Jaguars get. And this is why I do this the way I do it every day for you and your experiences. So you can hear exactly, and I try to tell you not necessarily what I would want. But I try to tell you exactly the way it's going.

28:01And hopefully for you hearing from Tony Bacelli himself today, it kind of lines up with the things that I've been telling you. And it kind of lines up with how I do this show each and every day. And why I do this show each and every day. It still don't mean a hill of beans that they don't go out here and be Cleveland. It doesn't. And he knows you saw, I say, I'll try to be as nice as a can of things don't go. And he starts laughing because everybody knows me, man. They know, but they also know in anybody that covers his team knows that when he's coming, comes time to defend, do ball. I will do that too. Look, man, the Thursday crossover is a back. I have with Spencer German from Lockdown Brown. Spencer's actually coming to town for the game too. We'll have that tomorrow. In fact, I may do y'all a favor and release that about six in the morning instead of releasing it later. But we're going to give you all of the keys to victory. We're going to do it all season long. And then I may have another special guest for you Friday, but I can't tell you who it is. In fact, I was supposed to interview Tony Laster. I'm going to give you all a little information.

29:01I mean, Tony was supposed to do this last year and I scheduled it on the wrong day on my calendar. So they want to bring that up, but we've been laughing about it a little bit the entire off season. So I'm glad, and I'm very appreciative and grateful that Tony acknowledged the show and wanted to come on and explain the opinion around here locally. We hear from him a lot because he used to work at the flagship station. He was in the media for a long time, but it's still always good to know and hear that they came on to talk to the listeners every day. I gave you a first hand listen into how they're feeling as they're leading up to the game. And I hope you feel better about it. If you were one of the ones that were kind of afraid about what was going on, you ain't got to be scared no more because now you see the confidence and the wide of this organization. They ain't settled. It wasn't good enough. They got to get better and it's each and every day where you feed.
