It's a series of discussions with the historian Andrew Hartman, whose new book Marks in America examines how Karl Marks and the philosophy and politics he created shaped and reshaped the United States. In the process, we answer some of the most vexing questions that have confronted and it continued to confront the American left. There's never been a socialist or labor party in the U.S. the way there was in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. We examine Mark's life in all its contradictions. And I should say one of the reasons he was paying close attention to it is because translations of capital were selling better in Russia than anywhere else. Socialists always make the best capitalists because we have no illusions about the system.
