More airport disruptions are expected as TSA agents quit. Will the price of plane tickets go up due to the war in Iran? The fantasy of a comfy retirement has always been a mirage.

This is booming.
That's why I'm working on a Saturday.
Want to be like Jim and Sarah?
It's easy.

That's the magic of Xfinity.
It's seamlessly in tune with you.
Xfinity.
Imagine that.
Restrictions apply.
You're listening to Bill Handel on demand from KFI AM640.
KFI AM640 Bill Handel is a Monday morning March 16th.
We're halfway through March.
Just seemed like yesterday was March 15th.
It's going very, very quickly.
Also, I want to remind you that every Friday we do ask Handel anything.
When you do your help to do that, can't do it without you.
And it's all about asking, handle anything.
And I'm pretty good about answering 99% of the questions.
And the way it works is during the show, you go to the iHeartRadio app.
And the show is streaming and just go to the microphone in the upper right hand corner
and record a question.
And it's all about embarrassing me.
So Neil chooses the questions and they're always great, great fun.
And you'll also, you can podcast any part of this show at any time.
All right.
What's going on with TSA?
Now I was joking prior to the segment before I ended the hour about.
It used to be that the TSA agents were, for the most part, very heavy set women and tight black capri pants.
And of course, all of you on the show looked at me and questioned me.
Well, I got to tell you, it's true.
And if you don't think we still have some vestiges of that, go to a TSA checkpoint any time over the next week
as you try to fly and tell me how much sweating of the TSA agents are doing.
They're shfitzing like crazy.
I don't want to connect the two premises, but just want to let you know.
Now, on the not so fun part, TSA agents are just now getting their full no paycheck.
And some of them have quit.
You know why?
That people live paycheck to paycheck.
It's not as if TSA agents make a whole lot of money.
You know, these are not people that are paid high salaries.
So it's not easy living, particularly here in Southern California, but all over the country.
So they missed their first full paycheck since the shutdown, partial shutdown began in mid February.
And then you know, the fight for DHS funds that the Democrats are holding up because they want restrictions on ice
and the administration does not want to put in restrictions and they're fighting back and forth.
And so DHS has been affected.
Interestingly enough, funding for ice itself has not been touched.
And that's because of the way that these programs, these laws have been written into determining which agencies get money and don't.
And so the CEO is a major corporation, major airlines, American Delta, Southwest, JetBlue, have urged Congress, please restore DHS funding, please.
And here's what's happening at the TSA agents.
And this is part of this letter.
It's difficult if not impossible to put food on the table, put gas in the car, pay rent when you're not getting paid.
Now, relatively few TSA agents have outright quit.
And that's 300 out of, I don't know how many tens of thousands, but a lot are calling in sick.
And as every day passes, I'm willing to bet a lot of them are looking for work right now.
No surprise, hundreds of TSA employees have quit this time around.
That's Edward Kelly, national president of the American Federation of Government Employees.
Most Americans would quit their jobs if they didn't get a paycheck on pay day.
Last year about 1100 officers separated separated quit TSA in October and November because of the shutdown then.
TSA agents are supposed to work without pay.
That's one of the other parts of the law is that there are certain members of the government that get paid no matter what.
They're, for example, the military, they're paid, they have to buy law.
And certain agencies, certain employees have to work and have to wait to get paid.
There was a moment that the president during the shutdown said that they're not going to get paid, they did.
And there's never been a shutdown where workers were not paid retroactively never in the history of the United States.
But this one is a much tougher one because this one, well, maybe not because it was 38 days and we're well already into a couple of weeks.
That TSA agents since the government shutdown happened.
And so if you're a TSA agent, you're going to get a lot of grief because oh my God, look what you're doing stopping me from flying.
Now, combine the TSA, the agents not getting paid, combine that with the storms that are happening.
The East Coast is going through yet another huge snowstorm and another one behind that that has shut down airports.
I mean, the last one was the worst storm and I think in 30, 40 years.
And that just shut down airports all over the East Coast.
So it's going to be, it's going to be tough flying.
If you plan on flying, first of all, be prepared for hours and hours to wait.
Not so much on the West Coast, but certainly if you're flying to the East Coast and coming back,
you may be waiting days before you get on an airplane.
No fun right now.
It's not fun at all.
But that's just the disruptions.
Now I'm going to give you a little bit of good news about the price of airplane tickets.
Good news.
Oh no, not good news.
I misread that because ticket prices are going through the roof.
Okay.
Now let's move on to ticket prices on airplanes.
Because oil is increased by what 30% or more since the start of the war, gas prices are up 24%.
The airlines, those airplanes use a lot of aviation fuel.
And that is the number two cost of running an airline.
Number one being the cost of pilots being personnel.
Now the airlines could do something about that and they have.
You know, for example, it used to be, this is I'm going back years and technology has taken care of this.
But it used to be going across an ocean.
You needed four, the plane needed four engines in case one went out and needed three people in the cockpit.
Originally there was four people in the cockpit, but three people in the cockpit, pilot, co-pilot,
and a navigation slice engineer guy who dealt with fuel, also dealt with a fuel load.
And so what ended up happening is technology got better.
It went down to three, three engines and then went down to two engines, which is what everybody flies across the world.
The two engine planes except for a few, the A30, the 747, which nobody flies anymore.
And very few A380s are going around.
So technology was able to go from four engines to three engines to two engines.
Pilots went from four to three people in the cockpit to two.
That is technology.
How about the price of fuel?
That when the airlines can't do much about and the volatility is insane as the airlines try to deal with this.
Southwest Airlines, and I'm sure you didn't know this a little bit of history, for 50 years bought fuel using a hedging model.
In other words, every year they would hedge by saying they'll be in a contract with a fuel producer and say,
we will give you X dollars for every gallon or every pound of fuel they do pounds in that industry, for every pound of fuel.
And we guarantee that we're going to buy it at this price and the provider's supplier say, okay, we're going to make sure you provided it at this price.
Well, if the price of fuel goes up, the airlines do great because they're paying a lower price than what the market is because the market for fuel changes every day.
It's a world commodity.
And if the price drops though and the airline is guaranteed must spend X number of dollars per pound of fuel, it loses money because the price of fuel goes down.
And they're paying more than they should.
So that got to be so volatile that Southwest Airlines, which did this for 50 years, has said no more.
Southwest Airlines also has stopped flying to two of its destinations. That was kind of a shocker yesterday.
And the war going on on top of it has really affected the profitability of the airlines, not only the fuel, but let's say from here to Dubai, which I'm going to fly at in October.
Well, a drone just hit the Dubai airport and the authorities have shut down the airport.
No airplanes going into the airport and why is a big deal for the airlines because the flights into Dubai international flights is where they make the money.
Those are the most profitable routes that the airlines have.
So it is going to affect everybody and it happens very quickly.
I have not looked at the price of a flight from here to Las Vegas.
And if we take a look at that and let me know at some point in life, spirit airline is coming out of bankruptcy for the second time.
And the creditors have taken equity positions on spirit airline. In other words, spirit owes a pile of money.
It's borrowed pile of money. And so the creditors that have loaned spirit money, instead of getting money back, they take a piece of the company.
Well, they have just said they're going out of business because the color me go out of business because the cost of fuel is so great that the company simply can't function.
Pilots cost the most money, but the airlines can do something about that.
The airlines can furlough pilots, the airlines can reduce the number of flights.
I mean, there's a lot of control except for the price of fuel.
That one you can't do anything about and we are going to get hit.
And I always play around with the whenever I fly, I go to Las Vegas quite often.
And as you know, I, you know, every year, my disposable income goes to vacations. That's it.
You know, I certainly don't spend that on clothing. Just bought another shirt at Costco.
I talked to my best friend yesterday and I said, I'm in line at Costco.
Can't talk to you right now. He goes, of course, you're in line at Costco.
And was it, was it Friday? You guys made fun of me or Neil did that I go to Costco four to five times a week and I was so offended because it's three to four, not four to five.
So, you know, don't come up with figures that you're just making up by the whole cloth.
We're done guys so much for that.
Okay, let me talk to you about something that I've been talking to you about very long time and something that I have been very concerned about since I was in my 30s.
And that is retiring.
That is retiring. I did not want to live on virtually no money and I did not want to live only on social security.
It became obvious to me decades ago that if people are only going to live on social security, it's going to be a rough go.
When you go to Walmart, for example, you have a Walmart greeter where you go to various jobs and these people in their 70s and 80s are working.
Oh, that's sweet. They're trying to keep busy.
They've retired. They have nothing to do. No, in many cases. I'm going to even argue in most cases.
They need the income. Lindsey was sharing an Instagram post or a video of a guy delivering for DoorDash.
And it was being videoed by the homeowner.
And there he is. He was in his 80s.
And he's bringing up the bags, two bags, one in each arm, going up the porch steps.
And he was having a hard time making it up the steps.
And was asked, why are you doing this? Because I need the money.
Well, she started a GoFundMe campaign and he doesn't need the money anymore.
$500,000 were raised for him so he could actually retire.
But he is not alone. He is just incredibly lucky.
We just don't plan for retirement.
Now, other cultures don't really have to worry about it because in other cultures, grandparents just hang out with the kids.
You know, until they die, well, we don't do that. That is not the American culture.
So, a story in the New York Times was written about this.
And it starts with a woman from Minnesota calling into C-SPAN.
They have an open forum and she's talking about her despair, the cost of living.
She said, I'm 65 years old. I'm legally blind. I'm on disability.
I went to my doctor. I lost 28 pounds in this last year.
I did not need to lose 28 pounds. I did not try to lose 28 pounds.
I lost 28 pounds because I can't afford to eat anymore.
Wow. So, this woman is sharing and she is why this happened.
Well, one of the reasons is the administration cut the snap money, supplemental nutrition assistance program.
That has been decimated food stamps.
And then you have the high cost of grocery and gas and electricity.
Sharon allows herself $65 a month for food. That's all she can afford.
Now, imagine that.
And she's at an age when Americans, well, we want to be comfortably retired, but she can't even afford basics.
Relying on dwindling government support doesn't help. She can't make ends meet.
And a lot of young people are in fear that that is their future.
And people who aren't in fear are delusional.
And this is the tough one. Now, as much as I make fun of everybody, I have a hard time with people in this country not eating.
One of the wealthiest countries on the planet where we produce more food than we would ever need.
We export food. We throw away insane amounts of food.
I think Neil, you and I have talked about what 30, 40% of the food that is consumed or of that at 30% is thrown out.
No, 40 Europe. You're right on the second time.
You know, I was talking to Saturday night, I had dinner with the CEO of of my God that I just don't fire grill.
Don't fire grill. What are my favorite restaurants? I can't believe I did that.
So I was talking to him and talking about, you know, all the food that's left over that a restaurant has used to be thrown away.
You couldn't even donate it because of the, because of the laws that, you know, you have the FDA and you've got temperature controls.
You have to keep a below 40 or above 160 or whatever the figure is.
I didn't know they changed a lot. Neil, now restaurants, caterers can donate food.
And the rules about keeping it under temperature is there's a four hour window.
Now, it used to be no window. So we're moving in the right direction.
And Dave, I apologize for forgetting the name of your restaurant, whatever it is.
You were going to get it.
Eventually, you know, eventually, I didn't do, I didn't want to do the wrong one.
By the way, there is an app and we've talked about this on the show before too good to go.
And you can find out local, your local restaurants and donut shops bakeries.
You can buy stuff before it's thrown out.
Now we're moving in the right direction, but that's the drop in the bucket compared to what we're looking at.
And it's getting worse every day. And it's a, it's a heart breaker.
It really does affect me, not much affects me, but this one does.
All right, back we go to retirement and some figures just came out.
And there's a story in the New York Times about this woman who called into Seasman open forum and said,
I'm 65. I'm legally blind. I'm on disability.
I lost 28 pounds the last year and I didn't need to and I didn't want to.
I didn't have enough to eat.
And so one of the things about America and as we often say, and I believe it also,
this is the greatest country in the world, but which category?
I am not an exceptionalist. There are places where we're not the greatest country in the world.
One of them being infant mortality.
The other one is being education on the lower level of education, not university level.
And old people, we don't take care of our old people.
And we have people living just on social security.
And I joke about, you're going to live in a dumpster and I do that all the time on Saturday.
Unfortunately, in many cases, that is true.
And so what is going on? And this also want to point something out.
And then the statistics, this article is the New York Times article.
And I don't know how much I want to go into statistics, but I want to give it a general view,
which I've shared with you before. And number one is exactly what I said is we don't take care of our old people.
We throw them away.
Other communities, other cultures, not only admire, but cherish their old people and they stay at home.
And the kids take care of them. We don't do that.
Also, we don't have the retirement plans we used to.
Pensions have, for the most part, disappeared.
Social security, theoretically, keeps up with inflation, theoretically.
Housing is impossible to get.
And this is a generation where the boomers, and I'm a boomer.
And the philosophy is you always do better than your parents.
That has been the American mantra.
You do better than your parents. I was told that growing up.
You're going to do better than us. And I did.
I did. By the way, I'm the last generation that did that.
After that, not even close.
The millennials, the Gen Zers, are not doing as good as their parents.
They're doing worse than previous generations.
Why is that? Pensions have disappeared.
You've got government help basically disappearing.
People thinking they can live on Social Security, which has always been a myth that was never designed for people to live on.
It's supplemental.
Impossible to save money because people live paycheck to paycheck.
You've got couples both have to work.
Except if you have children, where do you park your kids?
With the cost of daycare being so expensive,
it actually can eat up an entire income of one of the parents.
Yeah, things have to change. How do we do that?
There has to be a monumental movement.
And this is really impossible to do on a social level.
There have been monumental movements and technology.
The car changed everything.
The computer changed everything.
The telephone changed everything.
I'm watching a whole series of documentaries about what has changed America monumentally.
But in terms of eating and working,
that has not changed monumentally. It's a heartbreaker.
It is. Is there anything we can do?
I don't know. It depends on priorities.
Are we going to prioritize taking care of old people,
making sure people are fed?
Does it take tax dollars? It does.
Do you know that there's a survey that just came out
that people are willing to pay more taxes
to make sure that social security stays solvent?
Now, we're a very short term people.
We don't want to pay taxes for the long term.
That's not how we live.
In this area, it is absolutely true.
We're willing to pay more taxes
to keep social security solvent.
Why? Because people are realizing
you don't want to be a greeter at Walmart.
That's a tough way to go.
All right. We're done, guys.
I shared my depression with you on that one.
Why don't they just let us keep more of our tax money
and then maybe we'll be better off?
Well, the problem is, well, if you're talking about
during a democratic administration,
that tax money goes to social programs or many of them.
And now, when you have a conservative
or Republican administration is another way of thinking.
That's all. It's a different philosophy
where social programs are not as important
as, well, in this case, immigration,
but in terms of defense, it's who we vote for.
That's all.
That part I love about America
because we vote.
I'm not crazy about the electoral college.
That's kind of dumb.
But all right, we're done. We are done.
Gary and Shannon are up next.
And if you're really depressed, don't be.
Life is going to be wonderful.
Life is really great.
You know, it's wonderful, but you just listen to your friends.
Especially the greeters at Walmart.
They'll tell you how terrific life is.
And then the cat food because they can't afford a real meal.
Okay.
We start again tomorrow morning with.
Oh, it was will here today.
Nice of you to notice.
Nope.
Oh, I did.
You know what?
Because if I don't see him,
if I don't see you, you're not there.
Okay.
It's simple.
Eight fifty eight.
Eight fifty eight.
You noticed.
Well, it's gone.
Okay.
Well, hopefully as we'll back to back on tomorrow.
Is it back?
I don't really know.
He may or may not be.
He'll be back for sure on Wednesday, maybe.
Okay.
Yeah.
There we go.
He may or may not be.
Okay.
Great.
All right.
Amy and Will maybe.
And then Neil and I and then Kono who loves it when I rip into the rest of the crowd.
And Anne who couldn't give me the data for life dependent on it.
