佛祖在竹园精舍时，国中有位长者，财富多得数不清，找了一个名门望族的女子做妻子。后来妻子生了一个男孩，非常端正，世上罕见。长者夫妇非常欢喜，取名为优多罗。
优多罗渐渐长大，父亲去世了。优多罗心想：父亲靠做买卖起家，但我对做生意不感兴趣。我对佛法心生敬信，我想出家。
于是优多罗请求母亲让他出家。
