UK Plan: Deport Failed Asylum Seekers from Safe Countries

On March 23rd, UK Home Secretary Shabbana Mahmoud is pushing a plan to deport thousands

of failed asylum seekers right after their claims get rejected.

This targets people from 25 countries officials called SAFE, like India, Brazil, Nigeria,

Kenya, Ghana, Albania and Ukraine.

The goal is to stop them from appealing while still in the UK and send them home first.

The policy revives powers from a 2002 law under Tony Blair's Labour Government.

And lets the Home Office remove migrants quickly if there's no real risk of serious harm

back home.

Fail claimants lose access to taxpayer-funded hotels and support, and they can choose

voluntary flights or forced removal.

Critics are speaking out, including Labour's Angela Reiner, who called it un-British and

harmful to families.

Nearly 50 MPs threaten to rebel last month over the tougher immigration stance.

Meanwhile, border minister Alex Norris defends it as fair, saying taxpayers shouldn't

foot the bill for refused claims, especially from criminals.

Number show a huge backlog with over 100,000 appeals from rejected asylum seekers by the end

of 2025, nearly double.

The year before.

Last year, 14,000 failed claims came from those SAFE countries, including 4,000 from India

and 2,700 from.

Nigeria, removals without end country appeals rose 50% to 8,476, but still only covered

10.6% of, 80,000 rejections.

This crackdown aims to clear the log jam and cut costs, with more deportations expected

soon to reshape how the UK handles asylum.
