UNC Parts Ways with Coach Davis After Tournament Loss

On March 25th, University of North Carolina has parted ways with men's basketball coach

Hubert Davis after five years on the job.

The move comes right after a stunning first round NCAA tournament upset loss to Virginia

Commonwealth University.

Athletic leaders announced the decision Tuesday ahead of the 2026-2027 season and they're

already searching for his replacement.

Davis' tenure kicked off strong with a run to the National Championship Game in his first

year.

The Tar Heels hit rough patches, missing the tournament entirely the next season, and

bowing out in the sweet 16 the year after that.

This latest exit followed them squandering a 19-point lead against VCU.

Both sides spoke appreciatively about the split.

The athletic director highlighted Davis' character, his roots as a player and assistant and

the lasting memories he created.

Davis himself expressed gratitude for the opportunity and said he's ready to lead another

program soon.

A former Tar Heel from the late 1980s into the early 1990s, Davis spent nearly a decade

as an assistant before stepping up, head coach.

His teens consistently landed top recruiting classes and finished with 179 wins against

125 losses.

Now, UNC turns its focus to hiring someone who can harness that talent pipeline and steer

the program back to consistent elite contention in the tournament.
