Undrafted Edge Rusher Shines | NFL News

About this episode

The Detroit Lions didn’t just make splashy moves this offseason—they quietly unearthed a hidden gem. After drafting Derrick Moore and signing veteran DJ Wonnum to bolster their pass rush, they snatched undrafted rookie Eric ONeill from Rutgers, now one of five edge rushers on the roster. And here’s the twist: head coach Dan Campbell has been publicly raving about him—rare praise for an undrafted player before the season even starts. With big names getting headlines, ONeill’s early confidence boost could be the spark that turns him into an unexpected breakout star.

It's September 7th. Welcome in. This is NFL News Today, where the league meets AI. I'm Cory with the story. The Detroit Lions made some serious moves this offseason to beef up their defensive line. They brought in veteran DJ Oneum and then snagged Eric Moore in the second round of the draft. Those were big plays no doubt, aiming to get more pressure on the quarterback. But it looks like they might have stumbled upon some hidden talent too. They signed an undrafted rookie named Erich O'Neill after the draft wrapped up. He's out of Rutgers and is now one of five edge rushers on the team's main roster heading into the season. Now here's the kicker. Head coach Dan Campbell himself has been giving O'Neill some serious praise. He's been singling him out, which is pretty rare for an undrafted guy, especially before the season even kicks off. It shows they see something special in him. This kind of attention from the head coach can really boost the young player's confidence. And Neil is competing for snaps against guys who were drafted much higher. So getting that nod from Campbell is a huge vote of confidence and could.

Mean he's got a real shot to make an impact early on. So while the big draft picks and free agent signings are getting the headlines, keep an eye on Erich O'Neill. Sometimes the guys you don't expect are the ones who end up surprising everyone and making a name for themselves in this league.
