Welcome back everyone.
This is Randy Dick on the Return on Life podcast.
Hey, I always say this, but it really is not always
about the ROI.
Like I thought for so many years,
but it's really about the Return on Life, the ROL.
So I am thrilled that you're here.

Hey, hit that link.
Let's see you as a subscriber.
Anyways, today we're gonna talk a little bit more
about personal growth, about leadership,
about who we are and what makes us unique.
What makes you unique?
What makes you special?
What makes me Randy?
Like, listen here, I've got a twin brother.
His name is Gerald.
And yes, we are identical twins in so many ways,
but we're still unique.
We're so unique in our own ways,
yet we have so many things in common.
In fact, if you met us, if you met us, you'd say,
hey, you must be Randy and is actually my brother, Gerald.
And vice versa.
And the way we talk and the way we walk
and the way we do things, there's just so many things
that are so, so similar.
Yet, yet, yet, we're so unique in so many ways.
And so today, I wanna talk a little bit about
some things that really make you who you are.
And what makes you unique to you?
And it's called the 555 exercise.
Yes, triple five, five dash, five dash, five exercise.
And it's about things about you.
So five key events in your life, five key people
who have influenced your life.
And five choices that you've made throughout your life.
The 555 exercise.
And so first off, the five key events in your life,
what are those events that have happened to you?
Think about that, go back in time,
go back in that mindset, the hard drive,
go way, way, way back.
And think about what are the things that impacted you?
What are the key events?
What are the crucible events that made you who you are today
because every one of those events,
whether they're tragic or exceptionally great events,
they all impact you, they all shape form
and make you who you are today.
What are those five events?
What are those five events that shaped you?
And made you who you are today.
And an event can literally change who you are.
It can.
I mean, we see this all the time.
People have some sort of crucible event,
some major event that happens in their life
and therefore ever changed.
Forever changed.
So what are those events?
And I want you to get out a notepad
and write down those five.
Get a notepad out.
We're gonna do a little bit of work
and write down the five events in your life
that you can remember that really have impacted you.
Now, here's the thing.
Some of them are so big, so momentous,
so tragic possibly that you maybe don't even remember them.
You may have wiped them out of your memory, deleted them.
And it may take some work to actually bring those out.
For me, I didn't find this that challenging.
I knew them right away.
So I've always talked about crucible events.
So crucible events for myself
are being born a twin.
I've already shared that.
So being born a twin is a pretty big deal.
It's a crucible event and I would never ever want
to change that for a million years.
I just absolutely love being a twin.
I love my twin brother.
In fact, it's so crazy.
We know what's going on in each other's lives
without even talking.
Something happens to him and I go, hmm, something's up.
I should maybe give Jericho.
And lo and behold, something did happen.
Something did happen in his life that was major
in a lot of events.
We've had so many of those crazy events throughout our life,
whether it be being thousands and thousands of miles apart,
yet, yet we know that something happened
to the other individual.
And I got some crazy stories.
I won't be labor them here.
If you'd like to know what the crazy stories are,
please reach out to me and I'd love to share them with you.
But so many medical stories, so many exciting stories
that we both have had, that we both know
that something's happened in each other's lives.
So being born a twin, number one, key event.
That was day one.
We were born twins.
That was my number one key event in my life.
My number two key event in my life was actually something
very, very tragic.
At least it was tragic in the moment.
It was 14.
I was 14 years old and I broke my neck in a motorcycle accident.
And I was paralyzed from the neck down at 14 years of age.
Now, in the moment, that was crazy.
It was horrible.
It was like, oh my goodness.
Am I going to be paralyzed for the rest of my life?
Those were the thoughts going through my head.
And am I even going to live?
Because I mean, people break their necks and pass away.
Yet, today I see that as one of the great things
that did happen to me.
And yes, I do have neck pain today.
Yes, I do not have the mobility.
In my neck that most people do.
However, it shaped, formed and made me who I am today.
And I would give it up for the world.
I would not give it up for the world.
Think about that.
Kind of crazy even to think about that.
And so many people that do have these very tragic things
that happen, look back on them later and go, oh my goodness.
That's what made me who I am today.
That's what took me to this place, or to that place,
or open up this door, or close that door
that I never want to go into.
So tragic events can be key events in your life.
And that was one of mine.
My next key event, again, kind of a tragic event,
I flunk grade 12.
I watched my twin brother Gerald walk across the stage.
I sat in the back row of the auditorium,
the gymnasium sobbing, just distraught, like, oh my goodness.
And yet, yet, it was one of the best things that happened
to me later as I progressed through life.
And what it did is it allowed me to take another run
at something that I was actually capable of,
but I just didn't execute.
I just didn't focus.
I was way more interested in doing other things
like playing hockey, and tennis, and basketball,
and volleyball, and I just didn't even put any effort
into the school, scholastics that is anyways.
And I didn't pass one course.
And they said, you don't pass this course,
which was social studies.
You don't get to graduate.
Well, I could have taken a summer school class,
but my father, again, in the wisdom of my father,
my way, I have so much respect for my father.
He said, Randy,
what do you want to do?
He didn't tell me what to do.
He said, tell me what you'd like to do.
And in that moment, it was just so clear for me,
I said, I'd really like to do a repeat.
I'd like to show these teachers
that I'm capable of everything they don't think
I'm capable of.
And so, between my broken neck and this,
the competitive nature in me just continue to grow
and grow.
And, you know, I'm in the process of writing
a book about the underdog.
And that is where my underdog was born.
The underdog DNA within me was just like teeming inside,
just like ready to leap out of my skin.
And so, that was another great moment.
By the way, I did go back for a full year,
had an amazing year, an amazing year.
And again, as I said, I was a twin,
but now I got to be Randy,
not one of the twins that was going through grade 12.
And so, again, it was just a great way,
whether the universe, God, whatever you believe in,
I believe it was God's thoughts,
it was a God moment that said, Randy,
I think you should be held back so you can then,
you know, go and do this again
to really find out who you are
and be that individual rather than a twin.
I love being a twin, but gosh,
I also like being an individual.
So, that was another moment for me.
And all of these, I believe are God moments in my life.
What are the God moments in your life?
What are the key moments in your life?
Number four was meeting my beautiful wife, Jolene,
way, way back.
We've been now married 38 years this year.
And it was love at first sight,
when you know, you know.
And I saw Jolene across the parking lot
at a college that we both attended,
and it was love at first sight.
And here we are 38 years married.
And so, that was another key moment.
And Jolene taught me so much early on,
and they're still teaching me so much.
So, there's just this incredible moment of Jolene and I
as we were married in 1987.
And then my fifth key event in my life
is really when I got my real estate license,
I really got to take everything that was within me.
I grew up at a farm.
My dad was an entrepreneur.
He was a great farmer.
And I got to take all of that
and what I've learned over the years.
And also, what I was doing prior to real estate
was working at a sports shop.
So, I was in a retail business, a high-end sports shop.
And I got to take all that and just meld it
into what I call an amazing business.
An amazing real estate career
where as of today, I've sold over 7,000 properties.
Get that, 7,000 properties
because of all of these life lessons,
these key moments in my life that made me who I am.
And I'm still growing, still learning,
still being part of that process.
And I know God has many, many more moments in my life
to teach me more things about how to be better in life.
So, that's the key, that's my life.
How about the key people who influenced my life?
That's another question you need to ask her.
Who are the key people that influenced your life?
And before I move on with that,
I wanna make sure that you need to subscribe.
If you like what you're hearing now
and you think this is bringing you great value,
I need you to hit that subscribe button.
Now, we're on all the channels.
Please, please hit the subscribe button.
We'd appreciate that very, very much.
So, what are the five key people who influenced your life?
Who are the people that really came alongside,
that mentored, that held, that supported,
that gave you that encouragement
when you really, really needed it?
And so, for me, gosh, my parents, incredible parents,
grew up on a grain farm in Southern Alberta.
We had cattle and grain and, oh, my goodness.
What did I lock into?
I won the lotto with my parents.
I absolutely won the lotto with my parents.
Incredible.
And my dad was especially a strong influencer.
He did it in such a way that he wasn't telling me
and jamming it down my throat,
but just in watching how he conducted himself in business,
in building the farm, in farming, in our church,
and how he handled himself and led.
Oh, my goodness, just so, so much there
that he could share and go on and on and on.
But my dad was such an incredible influencer in my life
and still is today.
He's passed on, blessed his soul,
but he was such an influencer.
I mean, secondly, my twin brother,
gosh, I wouldn't be who I am
with a my twin brother, Gerald.
He was such a powerful force.
And together, we would just be so competitive,
trying to beat each other, whether it was running
to the bus stop or playing a game of basketball
or motocross racing, whatever it was.
And together, we were a real force to reckon with.
We were so, so incredible together.
And still are.
And so, Gerald is one of those influencers in my life.
A fellow that I just thought of doing this exercise,
I thought, gosh, there was a fellow
that was in the dormitory.
I went to a private high school in a small town
in Saskatchewan.
And we had dorms.
And there was the dorm leader, his name was David Conan.
And David, I don't know, he just,
he kind of took me under his wing, encouraged me,
helped me along, especially as I was struggling with,
you know, going through that course, that class,
wasn't getting it, he came alongside, said,
Randy, I got you back.
So I just want to have a shout out to David Conan.
I haven't talked to him in about 20 years,
but I just, you know, he came to my mind
as soon as I did this exercise, David Conan.
So thanks, thanks, thanks to Dave.
Then my fourth would be Jolene, of course.
Jolene, I'm getting this incredible order.
This is kind of the people in my life
as I moved along in life. Jolene, which I've shared already,
just such a powerful, confident,
and just really, really supporting me and everything I did.
And without her, of course, I would never be the man I am.
I would never be the business man I am,
the personal, you know, business man that I am.
And so Jolene, I got to give her just so, so much kudos.
So, Lord, thank you for giving me Jolene.
Number five would be Ron Funk,
what are my business partners?
And Ron and I connected gosh, 30 some years ago.
And so we've been working together, developing together,
buying property together.
And I just really love the guy.
He's just such a solid, solid dude.
So that's number five.
And I've got a number six this while,
which would be Ray and Kenna,
which was the owner broker of the Remax office
that I was part of.
And I was a part of a brokerage
that we joined hands together, came together.
And so Ray really was inspirational to me.
He led me, he gave me some great tips
on how to grow as a leader because he's a leader.
I got to see him lead.
So just, I have to say a lot of good things about Ray as well.
So those are the five people
that really, really influenced my life.
And then the key choices I made in my life,
what are the key choices that you're making?
Because you've got the events that happen in your life.
You've got the people in your life.
What about the key choices you've made?
What about the key choices you've made?
And so these key choices that I put down was,
number one, I'm leashing the underdog within.
Everybody's got an underdog in them.
We're all underdogs.
But whether you unleash it or not,
and for me, I had to unleash it.
Remember, I'm a twin.
I was the smallest kid on every team, it seemed like.
And then I broke my neck at 14.
I had to learn to walk, talk and not talk.
But walk, walk and everything to do with physicality.
I had to learn to do again.
Think about that.
I had to learn to do it all over again.
So I had to really unleash the underdog within.
Mm-hmm.
The underdog DNA came out alive and well.
Number two, kiwet.
The choices I made going back and redoing grade 12 again.
Another life changing event, redoing grade 12 again.
What have you failed at and said,
I'm going to do that again.
What is that?
What is this one thing that you've failed at and said,
I'm going to do it.
Maybe you haven't done it yet.
Maybe this podcast will bring that out and say,
ah, I didn't do that so well.
I failed at that.
I'm going to encourage you, go back and do a redo on that.
Do a redo on what you've failed and prove to yourself
prove to yourself that you are worthy,
that you can do it, that you can accomplish it.
Number three, decision that I made my life.
I went to a Bible school and I went to a Bible school,
not to become a pastor, but just to learn more about my faith.
Learn more about who I am and find out the true Randy.
But in turn, I met Jolene.
I met Jolene the love of my life.
And so that would be another key choice I made in my life.
Number four, birthing, parenting,
and raising three incredible kids.
We all have that choice.
Some of us choose to, some of us not, which is fine.
We all have that choice.
But for me, that is one of the great, great choices
I've made in my life.
And I've got three amazing children
that have got amazing spouses and now grandkids are on their way.
So I'm so excited about the grandkids.
It's just so awesome, awesome, awesome.
Okay, number five, getting my real estate license.
That was a life changing event in my business life
that just changed everything.
And really, everything that I have financially
is because of that thing called that license.
Now, everybody can get a license.
A license isn't hard to do,
but it's executing on that license and making it a value.
That license is worth nothing.
It's a piece of paper, but it can be worth a dollar
or it can be worth millions and millions and millions of dollars.
And so that was a key choice I made in my life,
getting that license.
And I'm gonna add number six
because they really are kind of tied together.
It's being intentional about being a leader.
Intentional about being a leader.
Are you intentional about being a leader?
So that's that choice I've made.
And I still am diving deeper and deeper
and deeper into this lane of being intentional to become a leader.
So the five, five, five exercise, it's really valuable.
It's really great to look back and see where you're at.
So number five would be five key events in your life.
What are the five key events in your life as a summary?
What are those five key events in your life?
What are the five key people that influenced your life?
Who are they?
What do they mean to you?
Have you reached out and said, gosh,
thanks for being such an incredible influence on my life.
I'm gonna encourage you to do that right now, right now,
because this is what happened to me when I did this exercise.
I went and reached out to some people
that I hadn't talked to in years, years.
And then last but not least,
five key choices that you made in your life.
Where are the five big choices that you made in your life?
The five, five, five exercise.
I hope you enjoyed this.
