1937年12月13日，日军攻入南京，随之而来的是人类历史上最黑暗的一页——南京大屠杀。在长达六周的时间里，侵华日军对南京城内的手无寸铁的平民和放下武器的战俘，进行了惨绝人寰的大规模屠杀、奸淫、纵火和抢劫。《南京照相馆》的故事也就发生在这个时刻。
