Here are the five things you need to know to start your day.

1.

The Iran Deadline

President Trump is now backing off and ultimatum he issued over the weekend, saying

that he would obliterate Iran's power plants if they refused to open, re-open the

straight of her moves.

Iran had said it would retaliate by completely closing the waterway and hitting U.S. interests

in the region.

Now, President Trump posting to social media, the U.S. had quote, very good and productive

conversations over the weekend, saying he's instructed the Defense Department to postpone

any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for

a five-day period subject to the success of the ongoing meetings.

Deadly Tarmac

Collision New York LaGuardia Airport will be closed until at least 2 p.m. Eastern today.

After an air-Canada plane ran into a fire truck on the Tarmac during landing, both pilots

were killed.

2 people in the truck were injured.

The Port Authority says they're among the more than 40 people who were transported to

the hospital.

Just before that fatal collision, air traffic control had granted permission for the truck

to cross the runway.

It was responding to another flight that had asked for help with an unknown odor in the

cockpit.

A second later, the controller tried to get the truck to stop.

According to the airline, there were 72 passengers and four crew members on that plane.

One passenger described what it was like inside the cabin after the accident.

Air would do its hunker down and everything screaming pretty quickly.

We didn't have any directions because the pilot's cabin had been kind of destroyed, so somebody

said let's get the emergency exit and get the door and that's all jump out and that's

exactly what we do.

An NTSB team is expected to arrive today to investigate.

Ice at the airport

With the wait for security lines at many airports and now stretching up to three hours

because of TSA staffing shortages, federal officials are sending in ICE agents to help.

Atlanta's mayor confirming the federal government notified him that Hartzfield Jackson International

will be one of those locations.

Borders are Tom Homan is in charge of the effort, but there are mixed messages from the administration,

and that's reason questions about what exactly these ICE agents will be doing and whether

their presence will actually help.

Homan says ICE will be assisting in guarding exits, for example, so that TSA officers

can focus on screenings.

But the Transportation Secretary said something different.

We're simply there to help TSA do their job in areas that don't need their specialized

expertise such as, you know, screening through the X-ray machine, not training that.

We won't do that.

They run those same type of security machines at the southern border, right, packages come

through or people come through, they run similar assets.

More than 400 TSA agents have quit since the partial government shutdown began a month

ago, and tens of thousands are working without pay.

Their union pushing back against this ICE deployment, calling it a, quote, dangerous escalation.

And in terms of this, partial government shutdown, and when it might end, Senate negotiations,

not making much headway over the weekend, overnight President Trump adding a new complication,

posting that Republicans should not make a deal, unless Democrats agreed to pass the

save act.

That, of course, would, in part, require proof of citizenship to vote.

It is basically a non-starter on the Democratic side.
