Hey there, from CNN, I'm David Rind with the five things you need to know for Friday,
0:06
Let's start with a major update in the war with Iran.
0:10
Three U.S. sources say a U.S. fighter jet has been shot down over Iran, and that search
0:14
and rescue efforts are underway.
0:16
It's not exactly clear where this plane went down, but that video verified by CNN shows
0:23
an apparent U.S. military refuel operation over central Iran, possibly as part of a search
0:29
Your photos had been circulating online of wreckage that one expert told CNN, appeared
0:33
to show remnants of an F-15 fighter jet that had partial logo for U.S. air forces in
0:38
Europe, which appear on such jets.
0:40
CNN's Jim Shudo is in Tel Aviv.
0:43
Those pilots, they are trained to do a number of things in the event that they go down.
0:48
The first is to evade, and if they're captured to escape, but also they have means of signaling
0:55
U.S. forces so that they could zero in on their location and take them to safety.
1:01
We know that Iranian authorities appear to be looking for the pilots as well, because
1:06
on Iranian state TV, we heard the state TV anchor exhorting residents in the area to
1:12
if they find pilots to turn them in.
1:15
Meanwhile, as part of its 2027 budget request, a largely symbolic wish list out just this
1:20
morning, the White House is seeking roughly $1.5 trillion in defense spending.
1:25
That would boost military spending to its highest point since World War II.
1:29
Alright, we have a lot more coming up, including some good-looking jobs numbers.
1:39
More jobs were added to the U.S. economy in March the next person predicted.
1:42
That's the headline from the latest report out from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
1:46
These are the strongest job growth numbers we've seen since December 2024, and it's
1:50
a big shift from February when hiring slowed and job losses ticked up.
1:54
CNN's Alicia Wallace from our business team is here, Alicia, what's behind the bounce
1:59
Where's this growth happening?
2:01
So the latest jobs report showed that the economy likely added 178,000 jobs last month.
2:07
That was nearly triple expectations.
2:10
Healthcare once again was the workhorse adding about half the gains, however, job growth
2:15
was some of the most widespread across industries that we've seen in a while.
2:21
Having said, there are some caveats that go alongside these numbers.
2:25
They were likely boosted in part by the end of big labor strikes as well as factors such
2:29
as favorable weather and tweaks in how the data is measured.
2:34
But still, 178,000 is certainly a reassuring number to see at a time when an ongoing war
2:41
has stoked uncertainty and cost prices to rise.
2:45
Political parties rarely win popularity contests, but a new poll from CNN is revealing how
2:50
voters who are mad at both parties are approaching the midterms.
2:54
CNN political director and Washington Bureau chief David Chalian has more on these so-called
3:00
There are about a quarter of Americans in our poll who say they do not like either party.
3:06
Now here's the thing though, among that group, they overwhelmingly plan to vote for the
3:11
Democrat anyway in the fall, right now anyway, by like 31 points.
3:15
So the way I sort of describe this is, the Democratic Party has a brand problem, there's
3:19
no doubt about that, but it may not be an electoral problem when it comes to the midterms.
3:26
Federal officials have arrested eight people of running health care fraud schemes in Southern
3:31
Thoroughly say those alleged schemes brought in $50 million, five of the cases involved
3:36
hospice care centers in and around the Los Angeles area.
3:39
The U.S. Attorney's Office alleges the suspects built Medicare patients who were not terminally
3:44
ill and did not qualify for hospice services.
3:47
The Trump administration has focused its latest anti-fraud efforts on California, particularly
3:51
the LA area, says the Democratic-led state is failing to crack down on improper spending.
3:56
Governor Gavin Newsom's office said the state has already aggressively cracked down on
4:00
hospice fraud, noting the state stopped issuing new hospice licenses in 2022 over fraud
4:06
It has also revoked more than 280 licenses in two years with 300 other providers under investigation.
4:14
One more break when we come back, how AI could supercharge cyber attacks stick around.
4:20
I'm Dr. Sanjay Gupta, host of the Chasing Life Podcast.
4:25
In his new documentary called 50 Years of Apple, my colleague and friend Bill Weir, he's
4:30
going to look at how these devices we carry every day didn't just transform technology,
4:36
but they helped reshape our entire culture.
4:39
I actually met some researchers and met a woman Emma Durden who has been studying the
4:45
screen time effects on young brains for the last few years now and it comes down just
4:51
to the power of these things.
4:52
I see to my own kids the addictive qualities in it at very young age especially and when
4:58
that young brain is you know better than most is not equipped to process these things there's
5:04
Listen to Chasing Life, streaming now, wherever you get your podcasts.
5:11
If you find yourself worried about artificial intelligence, let me add another concern
5:16
AI assisted cyber attacks.
5:18
Those fears were amplified this week after Fortune magazine reported on an internal blog post
5:23
from the AI company Anthropic.
5:25
In it, Anthropic warned that its upcoming AI model called Mythos and others like it
5:30
will be able to exploit vulnerabilities quote in ways that far outpaste the efforts of defenders.
5:36
Open AI warned in December that its upcoming models posed a high cybersecurity risk.
5:41
Experts say agents that can carry out tasks autonomously will empower bad actors to take
5:45
their hacks to the next level.
5:47
Just think about it, the single AI agent could scan for vulnerabilities and potentially
5:51
take advantage of them way faster than hundreds of human hackers could.
5:56
The company told Fortune the blog post leak was the result of human error within its
5:59
content management system, it did not respond to CNN's request for comment.
6:04
All right, that's all we've got for right now.
6:06
You can find the very latest on that fighter jet shot down over Iran over at CNN.com and
6:11
we'll be back with another update later today.
6:18
So have I got news for your ears, the podcast.
6:23
I am your host, Michael Ian Black, big episode of how I got news for your ears fan favorite
6:32
We're going to be talking about what we're talking about the war, obviously a little bit
6:35
of Cuba and also a little bit of Cuba good in junior, not as much.
6:41
Also the ballroom, the library Tony's going to break out is Robert De Niro, which is
