1:14
Well, once again, the awesome power of nature was on full display last week, unfortunately,
1:20
turning deadly in two cases.
1:23
We start out west where there have been dozens of avalanches in the past seven days to turn
1:29
fatal in Utah within 24 hours, claiming the lives of a young girl and a snowmobile, with
1:36
a third avalanche leaving two men fighting for their lives.
1:39
The Utah avalanche center reports that at least 30 avalanches were recorded on Thursday,
1:45
and more than 30 on Wednesday.
1:47
The first deadly avalanche happened Wednesday near Snake Creek.
1:52
About 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office, said a
1:57
dad and a son were snowmobiling in the area when the avalanche occurred.
2:02
The dad was caught and buried in the slide.
2:04
His son, using an avalanche beacon, located and dug his father out of the snow, only
2:09
defined his father had already died.
2:11
A second avalanche turned fatal the next day in Big Cotton Canyon when an 11-year-old
2:17
girl visiting from Massachusetts was killed in an avalanche in the backcountry near Brighton
2:23
Her brother was able to locate her while using a phone app to zero in on her location
2:28
and then dig her out while she was still alive, despite exhaustive efforts of first responders
2:33
and hospital medical staff, sadly the young girl succumbed to her injuries.
2:39
Yet another avalanche yesterday in the Big Cottonwood Canyon area buried two men, leaving
2:44
one critically wounded and the other seriously injured.
2:47
The two men, a 57-year-old who was listed as critical and a 48-year-old transported
2:53
to a local hospital in serious condition, were both considered to be locals familiar
2:59
They were reportedly doing some backcountry skiing near the Canyon's Butler Fork Trailhead
3:04
mid-morning Saturday when the avalanche was triggered.
3:08
Now the avalanche danger across the west remains high due to recent snowfall.
3:14
So far this year there have been 16 avalanche-related deaths in the U.S., including eight reported
3:20
back on February 17 after a large avalanche near Castle Peak, California.
3:25
Anyone heading into avalanche terrain should check the latest forecast, carry proper rescue
3:31
gear and avoid traveling alone.
3:35
Turning our focus to the Midwest now, suspected tornadoes tore through parts of southern Indiana
3:41
and Illinois on Thursday night as the first significant severe weather event in months swept
3:48
Communities were left with widespread damage after what meteorologists believe were
3:52
multiple tornadoes embedded within powerful thunderstorms.
3:57
According to one storm chaser in the area, several people were trapped and injured inside
4:03
damaged homes before first responders were able to get there.
4:09
The National Weather Service Office, an Indianapolis-deployed storm survey teams on Friday
4:15
to Sullivan and Monroe counties to determine whether tornadoes touched down and to assess
4:21
the strength of any confirmed twisters.
4:24
In Bloomington, damage was reported after a tornado-warned storm moved through the region.
4:30
The Monroe County Humane Association of Campus also sustained significant damage.
4:35
Fortunately, all the animals housed there were un-injured.
4:40
Officials at the Monroe County Airport reported substantial damage to the facility.
4:45
Several outbuildings were destroyed and multiple hangars suffered heavy damage.
4:49
Acquyweather meteorologist Tony Lawvack said a tornadic supercell also produced several
4:54
inches of hail across southern Indiana.
4:57
Video from Sullivan shows rivers of hail covering the ground.
5:02
The satellite imagery captured the powerful storm system as it intensified and raced across
5:07
the Midwest on Thursday evening.
5:10
As of Friday, no deaths had been reported in connection with the severe weather.
5:15
Damage assessments remain ongoing as officials continue surveying affected areas.
