Easy for you to say.
It's available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, 3D for everyone.
I hope you see that.
I'm excited because we're going to be talking about what was an absolutely thrilling World
Baseball Classic finale, including dramatic homeruns from Lillia Rebrae, and an incredibly
dramatic homerun by Bryce Harper, which are now footnotes in this wonderful game and
the future.
And we'll also look at the future of the WBC, what this means.
But to start things off, we're going to be talking about the finale, the ninth inning,
the greatness of this fantastic game.
I'm not flying solo.
The man loves his World Baseball Classic almost as much as he loves his guardians.
That's just melodic.
Come on back, buddy.
Woo!
I am ready.
Although I'm sad because now we have to get back to baseball.
It doesn't matter as much tomorrow, at least until opening day, but I'm going to live
on the high of this.
This was a lot of fun.
Yeah.
Look at you are a Cleveland fan.
You have to cover right out and bring the depression.
We just had an absolutely thrilling game.
Now, look at I, you know, American, American citizen, I was hoping Team USA would make it
a ball game.
And for the first 7-2-3 inning's boy, where their bats dead couldn't really get anything
going.
But they made a ball game.
I said, I just, I was talking to some of you know, I'm a teacher, a special ed teacher.
And I have a student who we just called D, kind of want to talk about mentioned kids
names.
He's a rabid baseball fan.
And D and I were talking about this game.
And I'll do a little impersonation.
You're going to watch the game tonight?
Yeah, D.
I'm going to watch the game.
I said, I hope USA wins, but I hope it's a good game.
Well, D, you got half of it.
We got it.
I wanted a thriller.
That was the main thing I wanted was a thriller.
At this point in my life as a baseball fan, I want thrillers.
And boy, let's just talk about the excitement of that ninth inning and half years to know
Ha.
And just a ton of credit to team Venezuela who had their, you know, their, their heart ripped
out.
Circa, Indiana Jones of the Temple of Doom.
And they're able to dust themselves off right away and get right back into it.
Yeah, one of the ninth inning.
And I know Snow Ha had the big stolen base because he pinned tram for Louisa rise.
Can we talk about Louisa rise by the way who walked to start that rally?
The guy who had 34 walks all of last season, a 5% walk rate, one of the lowest in the
majors walked to start that inning off and then gets country and poor by Snow Ha, who was
kind of a part-time player.
But in this series, we played a huge role.
But what a, what a start though.
Lisa Roja or Louisa rise is a world baseball classic menace like he is not known for power.
And he's, he had some of his biggest home runs in the world baseball class at the last
couple of years around.
And man, that guy really, really shows up when this tournament shows up.
Yeah.
And by the way, I know it's not cool to be a Louisa rise fan.
I'm a Louisa rise fan.
I think he's a pain in the neck hitter.
I like hitters who get a lot of hits.
He's a pain in the neck, but he showed power and he showed patience and came through in
a big huge way today.
And man, that ninth inning, which included, let's, let's not forget.
So no, how did a gutsy steal?
And he doesn't, he doesn't exactly have the greatest stolen base for sentage as a, excuse
me, scratch my nose there.
As a member of the Miami Marlins, he was in his home park today.
That was a gutsy steal.
And the, the slide he did in the second base to get around the tag there was really terrific.
And, you know, that was for Venezuela.
I don't know how the air Sonoa translates literally into English, but I think it translates,
I'm guessing it translates as Dave Roberts to coming in and getting that stolen base
and setting up what was the, what was the go ahead run?
That was really important because, you know, I do think Team USA made a mistake and not
using Mason Miller later in the end of the game and they never used them.
I, I think if this game had gone to extra ratings, I don't know that Venezuela would have
lasted much longer.
They were, no, they were tapped out and Mason Miller will go on the wait.
And then, you know, after the Bryce Harper home run, it felt like USA had some momentum
right there.
So, yeah, it was really important for them to get that run and take the lead going to
the ninth inning.
I know the USA didn't have the best offense all night long, but like after they tied the
game and Venezuela was running short on relievers at this point, it might have gone
the wrong directions.
That was a very important time to get that run.
Yeah, I mean, that's why, I mean, we'll talk a little bit in segment two.
We're going to be talking about the, some of the maybe missed, get called mistakes.
There's a, there's a listener who is doing a live feed day and someone has instantly put
a comment on there.
We're going to address that sub O for a rule, excuse me, I got a little bit of an itchy
nose today here.
But we're going in live.
We're doing live.
We're doing it below Riley style.
We're going live.
But the fact that he would lift Luis Arise in the ninth inning for a pinch runner, that
to me told me everything that team Venezuela felt about their chances in going deep into
the game because they're like, we got to win now.
We got to win right here right now.
I do believe if they were more confident in their bullpen and in their bats, they would
not have pinched run for Arise.
And I mean, I absolutely believe that because they would say, well, if we're going to actually
we don't want to, we don't want to lose his bat.
No, we have to score right now.
We have to take this lead right freaking now.
And give Suarez credit too.
He hit with a weight.
He hit that one into the gap and immediately put them on there.
He goes, I really thought Torres was going to bottom to third and he had the little bit
of the the yakening sacks going back and forth three second and third.
He tried to steal third on his own and the best thing that happened was that pop up.
I'm still not convinced it's come down.
It actually went through the roof and just sort of came right back down.
Good for Suarez for getting the big, big hit.
He did not have a great world baseball classic, but he got the hit when they needed it.
Yeah.
He was definitely emotionally.
You can see after the game, how excited he was.
I just love watching the reaction from Team Venezuela after this game.
They're all crying.
You can tell how much this means to them.
They're manager Omar Lopez who's not coming back as the next time around like a lot
of their big guys didn't have a great world baseball classic like Salvador Perez who probably
for all intents and purposes is their team player captain, like they're a star studed
bench.
Their bench of coaches included Victor Martinez, Michele Cabrera and Johan Santana, but
Salvador Perez is their team captain on the field.
This is probably his last WBC didn't play all that great.
Jackson Churrio didn't play all that great, but yeah, they had stars come through.
They had, you know, a rise was great.
Suarez came through.
Why Lord Bray was fantastic in New York.
Yes.
So far had so many big hits for them in this series.
Michele Garcia who emerged last year as a breakout player for Kansas City.
He was great.
So they had so many guys up and down, you know, to make up for the fact that some of
their bigger names like Perez and Churrio didn't come through it.
And around Acunia was an electric factory all WBC long.
Like how many lead off home runs?
How many electric home runs that he had?
Like, this thing has so much emotion.
They capture all of it.
So I'm glad they're done.
And Tomar got, you know, was a pain in the neck, hit after hit in big moments.
And the two, two of the biggest home runs by Venezuela were hit by Willier Brayou, the
game turner against Japan and the one that made it, it made it to nothing, I believe,
when he hit the home run.
Yeah, that's right.
It made it to nothing.
But that was, that's huge.
I mean, make that, that two runs are the difference.
Now, when we come back, we're going to talk a little bit about Team USA who, yes, I
give him a lot of credit for dusting themselves off after the embarrassment against team Italy.
But they are, they are probably going to have a little bit to answer for after this disappointing
game.
All right, hey, it's college basketball.
Time and the games, they're, they're just the excitement is nonstop.

So I just really, you know what?
Sometimes you got to, you got to risk it all.
You got to risk it all.
Take it.
Okay.
Exactly.
And speaking of that, I'm hosting locked on days for a few more days.
So check that out.
All right.
I'm going to post this here because it's, uh, it's, uh, it was, it was kind of funny
here.
Uh, sub, it's like Subaru, but I know four in the middle.
U.S. couldn't get bailed out again.
Is this an embarrassment for this all star U.S. team?
It's tough to call an embarrassment when you're tied going to the ninth inning of the
final game.
You know, that's, that's tough crowd territory for me.
You know, you're, it's, you know, embarrassment is if they lost, if they didn't get out
of the pool and they almost didn't, that would have been an embarrassment.
I think they played well against a team Dominican Republic.
They played well against Team Canada, uh, and they showed some heart coming back and
tying this game, but I do see how someone could say, Hey, wait a minute.
Shouldn't it all start team like this beat up a team like, uh, team Venezuela?
And before I get your response, I'll just say, I give credit to team Venezuela.
They may not have had all the superstars the team USA had, but they had the right hitters
doing the right job and maybe you give credit to that and maybe you give credit to the
manager.
What do you think about all this, Justin?
I think they did redeem themselves with the win over the Dominican Republic.
Like yes, it's embarrassing that they needed help to get out of pool play.
They, you know, they put themselves in a position to at least, uh, get out of it because
like it would have been a very complex way for like Mexico to win that game where we're
talking about that.
How Mexico had to score X amount of runs to eliminate them and have Italy and Mexico move
on and that didn't happen.
So they were in a position where like a lot of things had to happen to eliminate them.
So they just had a chance to get out on their own merits, so to speak.
Should they have been the top team from their pool, probably, but you know, team Italy
also had a really good pool players too, especially considering most of them are US born,
which is a topic for another show, I think, but I think they redeem themselves against
team Dominican Republic like Paul Schienz pitched, uh, pretty good against a very good line
of a map.
I'm surprised the DR didn't win the whole thing.
I had them beating Venezuela in this round and my initial picks on surprise.
They won that game in the first place.
Um, I think what you have to answer for is some of the decisions as the games went
along, like, you didn't see Gunnar Henderson play in this game and Bryce Harper struggled
throughout the series.
He obviously hit the big home run to tie the game in this one, but he struggled a lot
in this series.
They didn't use Mason Miller in this game, who is one of the best relief is the best
relief in baseball.
In my opinion, at this point, and something like teams have, or hit, they have like five
hits against him since September of last year or August, like it's crazy.
You didn't get to your best reliever there.
You went to get it went locked, saving it for the 10th inning that never happened.
But that's the worst crime you can commit, I think, as a manager.
So, um, team Venezuela was just better.
I don't think the, I don't think U.S. should be embarrassed by losing this game.
Um, did they make some mistakes in their, in their personnel in terms of how they
use the roster, sure, but, you know, they didn't hit.
And team Venezuela came through in the clutch.
And I also think team Venezuela, you have to give them credit too, but because their
roster is not bad.
It's not like they were, right.
I don't think people didn't get, I don't think people gave them enough credit.
Like you're saying they're underdogs.
And yes, they don't have a width.
They don't have swarber and judge and all these like big names.
But I don't know who he is at MVP.
Mike Elker, I see it was an all star.
At least the rise is one of the best hitters in baseball.
I know things have been weird with him.
You know, Salvador Perez didn't have a great classic, but he is one of the best
catchers in baseball.
He might be a hollow favor.
And Jackson, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And Jackson, sure, he was one of the best young players in baseball.
I know he didn't have a great tournament.
But like, this is still a really good roster.
I said, I think earlier we started talking about the classic.
I think Venezuela and years past is underperformed.
They found it underperformed this year.
And it was also clear what it meant to this team.
Like, look, I don't think that if team USA had won, I'm not saying that they
would have just been stoic.
And, you know, that this is like, oh, we don't, they don't care.
Of course, they would have.
And you saw when Harper hit that home run straight away center, you saw what
it meant to him because he knew he was, he was wetting the bed this year.
He knew he didn't look good.
And you know, and I know that if team USA won this game, the only, no one would
have remembered any slumping bright, you know, a Bryce Harper.
I was called a Brian Harper, who used to be the catcher for the twins of the early
1990.
No one would have remembered Bryce Harper slump.
They just would have remembered that, you know, because that's all people
will remember.
People remember the late magic, you know, Rojas, you know, in the world series
last year.
Do you think anyone's going to remember you got a hit for like, you know, four
weeks before that?
No, they got to remember the home run, you know?
And so that was that was one of those moments.
By the way, that was the moment when it was too nothing.
And the Fox answer was just gushing over the, you know, team Venezuela's
coaching staff and this and that and the other thing.
And and and and rightfully so.
And I was like, okay, I was sitting there going, okay, this game's fine.
But the story at that point, I knew you and I were going to be doing this
podcast tonight.
The story at that point was, wow, the, the, the USA bats are absolutely
to, you know, dead.
And with one swing of the bat, I sat up and they're like, okay, this is a
terrific game.
And so, you know, in that way, Bryce Harper redeemed the final, because if
that ended as a two nothing game, if that ended as a two nothing game, then
sub oh for a rule saying an embarrassment, I think that would have been
kind of embarrassing if they got shut out, you know, in the, in the final,
yeah, you've got to give the credit to team Venezuela.
But this is swarmer, followed by Harper, followed by judge, you know,
no, no, Harper was actually after, uh, uh, swarmer was actually after judge.
I'm sorry, but, but you know what I'm saying?
It's like great hitter after great hitter.
But, you know, and that would be shut out.
And I was surprised at gunner hen, you know, when he came up at the end,
and it was pinch hitters and like, yeah, that's right.
Gunner Henderson has been eating sunflower seeds and reading bazooka
joke comics this whole game.
You know, you, and a winner take all game, you have to play all your best
players, and you can't hold off on your relievers in an elimination,
winner take all game, you, you have to have your best picture,
whatever your best picture available has to be pitching.
And if you, and it made some little pictures, one or two innings,
then you go to Whitlock, then there's no problem.
But this is like show alter in the wild card game between Baltimore
and, um, uh, uh, Toronto or Toronto.
And he didn't know exactly why am I liking on, on the, the picture.
Exactly.
Exactly.
Thank you.
I almost said that year by the way.
What is that?
He got say young votes that year.
Yeah, I know, I know.
And, and, um, uh, and he was, and they brought in, you'll bother
him and us to let up the home run.
And I remember when that happened, I said, if you're going to go down,
go down with your fifth best picture.
Um, I mean, that's just craziness.
And in an elimination game, you can't manage it like your, your,
you're managing a game in, in the middle of August or the middle of July.
And you, if you have a pitch like Mason Miller and you know,
holding team Ben as well to zero runs in the ninth inning can mean one swing
of swarvers bat wins the whole kit and also the caboodle.
You can't have them sitting in the, in the ball pen.
Can't have it.
That was, that was, that was a big mistake.
I mean, I don't know if they would have gotten the hit.
Like, remember, they only scored two runs against the Dominican Republic.
And by the way, Gunner Henderson hit the home run against the Dominican public
to get him on the board.
So I don't know if they're scoring enough runs, but you put Mason Miller in there
and you go down, then, you know, so be it.
But he's pretty hard to hit.
So the fact that he had to watch the bullpen, I'm sure, did not sit well.
If Zach Britain led up the home run to, uh,
and Carnace on in 2016, you say they did, they, they, they beat their best.
If, you know, if a rise gets the, the, the walk and then, um, you know,
they drive in the run off of Mason Miller, then you tip your cat.
What you can't say is we didn't use them because we were holding them off for a
phantom 10th inning.
There is no 10th inning.
There is no 10th inning.
But I'm glad, Mason Miller is nice and rested for his next appearance with San Diego.
When we come back, let's talk a little bit about, uh, the best moments and also,
uh, the future of the WBC and what some of the success of this year might mean.
Hey, let's hear from our good friends over at game time.

I have some listeners from Venezuela.
So there you go.
I'd have to go.
Lance Oh, and Luis Torres is coming right in coming in hot pride was the biggest
killer.
Isn't that a quote from Dune for team USA.
Why schemes wasn't pitching is beyond me.
But every loss of the US has come when they thought it would be easy.
I would say that would team.
I can know loss against team Italy.
I don't think they took I honestly don't think they took Venezuela easy
today. I honestly don't.
I, you know, skiing's not pitching now.
It's not like they that they let up 40 runs or so.
It's not like they got clobbered.
It was two one.
It was two nothing in the bottom of the eighth.
It was two two going to the ninth by I don't I don't care who's pitching.
If it was Bob Gibson versus Sandy Colfax, you take two two going to the going
to the ninth inning.
Yeah, I meant to say bottom of the news to bottom of the eighth.
What was that?
Yeah, it's keen to pitch there.
No, you wasn't.
It's keen to pitch something.
Yeah.
So it's not I'm sure Pittsburgh would have loved that.
Yeah, we're going to keep riding them.
You know, we're going to keep that.
That is the difference.
By the way, Luis, but Luis Torres, this is the difference right now.
And I hate to say this.
That is the difference between the World Baseball Classical World Series at this point.
Is that you would have Yamamoto pitching a no-days rest.
You would have, you know, Randy Johnson coming out of the bullpen a day
after he threw seven innings.
You would have Madison Bumgarner coming out on like one or two days rest to in
game seven against Kansas City.
So, but let's not mince words.
The WBC is a lot of fun.
And it's a fun way to kind of break up spring training.
And everyone, you know, people get into it.
I say the other day, I love seeing the stadium in Miami packed and excited.
We haven't seen that and this is going to mean a ton for Venice, Wella.
I think it's going to mean a ton for Italy granted.
Most of the players were born in T-neck, New Jersey.
But that's not the point that Italy was represented there.
And maybe that would get some momentum.
What do you think is going to happen moving forward?
I do think for Italy, like they're going to cultivate more baseball fans over there.
They were, I mean, I heard a lot of good things about people in Italy,
staying up to all hours a night to watch those games.
And for Venezuela, this is huge too.
They also qualify for the Olympics in LA.
This is the only chance they had to qualify.
So the fact they got to the fire, I hear what it was.
They got a pool play, they needed something to qualify for the Olympics.
This is the only chance they had.
So they're, they're going to be the Olympics now too, which is great for them in
a couple of years.
That's big for them as well.
So I think it's going to be good.
I hope Travis was on and sparked a lot of people in Australia as well.
Yeah, I think for Italy, it's going to be great.
I think they're seeing how baseball can be played and how fun it can be.
And for instance, Costa Velli moved to Italy, their manager, and tried to do
a lot of work cultivating talent and hopefully
across the globe were fantastic.
Yeah.
And I got it.
You know why I really also feel really good for right now is Silvia Armitano.
Silvia Armitano, you know who Silvia Armitano is?
Silvia Armitano was the exchange, the exchange student from my high school
from Venezuela, who I took to the prom.
I took the, in forward exchange student from Venezuela to the prom.
And she was from Caracas, Venezuela.
She's a Facebook friend of mine.
She's now a doctor and I'm going to say, go, Venezuela.
And she's probably not going to care because she's a huge soccer fan.
But who knows?
Silvia Armitano, my prom date, my junior year in high school, the
foreign exchange student from Venezuela, I'm thinking of you, Silvia.
And hopefully you're watching this right now.
Larry, I, to I, says, where was Cal Raleigh?
Also a good question.
I mean, he didn't play in that one this game either.
Yeah, he played on, actually, he didn't play against it.
And then again, Republic.
So two days later, I wonder if he, I wonder if he's not feeling well.
Yeah, that, that is the thing you run into in this, right?
Like there might be restrictions that, there's something to be going on.
And you've run into the roster being conflicted as far as requirements from the
team. So, yeah, and Seattle fan of the, oh my God, he's, I'm feeling a little
tightness. Get him the heck out of there.
Seattle does not care about team USA, not even one lick.
By the way, Penn three R lab is the codame for a
Nostradamus, actually, his, is been watching us who said, uh, as soon as
we tied it up, I knew Whitlock was going to choke it.
It's very, it's a very easy thing to say in hindsight there.
I need to see.
It's been so good.
Time stamp time stamp.
I didn't feel that.
I didn't feel that at all.
But it should have made some Miller to be fair.
It should have, yes, yes.
But, uh, but Penn, uh, three R lab, uh, with your ability to see the
future and that sort of, uh, Biff Tannen and back to the future, um, way, I
recommend for you, you, what I recommend you do, buddy.
And this is, I mean this in the, from the bottom of my heart.
I need you to visit fan duel and, uh, just, uh, completely just hang out at
fan duel and, uh, you know, there it is.
There's our, there's our, um, there's our, and use, uh, was it code, uh,
code locked on and you'll, and you'll, you'll get your, you'll get what you
didn't need there.
Uh, all right.
Well, look at, I hope that, uh, this was the most fun I've had at the World
Baseball Classic.
I was, I was, I was tremendously cynical when it started back in 2006.
I thought it was something silly.
I did not get into it at all.
I didn't get into the first couple of times.
Uh, last, the last World Baseball Classic I did get into.
I did, I did think it was exciting.
And I think you kind of sought, um, taking a turn, especially with that
great finale, when it was trout versus Otani.
Um, this one just was, I, I've learned to accept it for what it is.
It isn't the World Cup.
It isn't the Olympics.
It's the World Baseball Classic.
And it's something fun that happens every few years.
And I'm not against fun.
So, uh, I, I had a blast watching it.
How about you?
I always had a blast.
This is, I think the tournament has gotten better every single year.
I think this is like, I think if you go back to 2017, when US one, that was good.
I asked time around.
It was really good.
This one was, was really good.
I hope, I hope we have the ABS challenge next time solely because, uh, it was a
little bit embarrassing with the DR law.
I'm not saying that's the reason they lost, but, you know, they said, but it stinks.
That's how it ended.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I would just let the other not have to talk about that.
Like I think the US deserved a way that those calls were not good.
So I hope next time around, we have the ABS challenge system in here.
And look, you're always going to have restrictions, right?
You're not going to be able to pitch guys certain amounts and certain guys will
leave and won't play the whole tournament.
That's always how it's going to be like you said, you got accepted for what it is.
But we had baseball all hours of the day during pool play, right?
You're watching baseball in Japan at 6 a.m.
at 10 p.m.
You're watching it in Puerto Rico.
You're watching it in Florida.
You're watching it in Houston.
And then you have single elimination drama in the spring where March Madness is
killing it, right?
So like you get a little bit of everything.
I think it's perfect.
It's not in the middle of the season.
Like you said, it's not the World Cup, but it's pretty good.
One game playoffs in March, we've usually spring training.
I'll take that.
I'm going to have a hard time going back to spring training baseball tomorrow.
I think we all are.
But then we're going to have the regular season right around the corner.
And that's going to be a lot of fun.
