Washington State lawmakers just approved a new millionaires tax that could change things

The tax targets household incomes over $1 million a year with a 9.9% rate.

It is set to start on January 1st, 2028, pending the governor's signature, which everyone

expects to happen.

This ends Washington's status as a no-state income tax state for high earners.

The Kraken have played their first five seasons without much edge from that perk, but now they

lose a key selling point when recruiting players.

Free agents often weigh taxes heavily in contract talks.

Teams in places like Florida have used their tax-free status to lure talent, helping the panthers

in lightning build winners.

Seattle can no longer pitch that advantage.

The move levels the playing field across the league, but it might make it tougher for

the Kraken to attract and keep stars.

Players making big league salaries will feel the hit on their take home pay.

League officials are unlikely to step in with any fixes for tax differences between states.
