Hey, the folks, it is Friday, April 17th at Robock and I.
Just got back in the house.
We haven't been here 20 minutes from the theater,
where we just saw one of the highly anticipated horror movies of the year.
The Mummy.
With that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ,
the Mummy Robes.
I was almost nervous going in because of the reviews talking about just how scary,
how gory and even disgusting in ways that it was.
Do you want to go with first quick impressions?
I thought it would be scarier.
Nice, okay?
And yours is?
Underwhelming.
Damn, here's the thing.
I think we watched two damn mini horror movies.
Sweetheart, I think our bar is really, really high,
not just for an original screenplay.
Everything doesn't have to be centers and weapons.
That's not what we're saying.
But I think we have such a high bar for what is scary,
even gross scenes.
We have seen so much that we, I think we are, we are, we have a different bar.
I think that's true, but I also think that expectations
play such a role in your impressions of a movie.
And when you've got critics using or dropping F-bombs and saying how
F-ing scary it is and how, you know, you can't eat before or after watching this movie.
I had an idea of what it was supposed to be.
So I think my expectations created a more of a negative viewing experience
than it would have had I not read anything.
If I had just gone on their blind,
had no idea what this movie was about.
And then I just sat down and watched it.
I think I would have enjoyed it, enjoyed the movie a lot more.
And we are, we do this all the time, Rob.
We say, we're saying the same thing.
Yes.
Yes, to your point, I saw a lot of reviews.
And then I thought, this is what you'll find that terrifying.
I really do think, yeah, Rob, it's possible.
It's possible that we have a different bar,
even when it comes to something that's supposed to be gross.
Like even, but there was some rough stuff in here at times.
And quite frankly, Rob, I was okay.
I didn't really have to look away.
That's always kind of my list test.
You see me when I have to look away.
And I still enjoy the movie, but most really scary movies,
there is a moment where I have to close my eyes
or I have to put my hands in for my head.
I didn't have to do it once.
Wow, okay, so let's set this up.
Now, this has been highly promoted, Rob.
Yes.
A lot of the advertisements out there for Lee Kronin's The Mummy.
Now, Lee Kronin was known most recently, 2023.
I think it was Evil Dead Rise with that franchise.
It did gangbusters and that is a hell of a movie.
There are some similarities we can talk about here in a second.
But Rob, this is a highly anticipated movie
from a very much horror genius,
so it would even say.
A well-respected, he knows the horror genre well.
And I have to say the Evil Dead Rise,
oh my goodness, that movie.
So my daughters have grown up watching horror movies
because yes, I'm their mother.
And I actually saw them turn it off.
We were on a plane.
It was available.
I was like, oh guys, you have to watch the Evil Dead Rise.
It's so scary.
They got excited.
They turned it on.
Both of them, after the first five minutes said,
nope, I would like to sleep tonight.
I am not watching this anymore.
That, to me, showed just how scary Lee Kronin
can be when he puts something together.
And so that's where my expectations were.
And you know what, that's probably
the first 10 minutes of Evil Dead Rise
are how most people should measure
whether or not they're going to be a
what kind of horror movie fan.
If you watch the first 10 minutes
and keep watching, we can hang.
Yes, or if you're like my daughters,
you're like, okay, I get it.
You have boundaries.
There are things you will not enter into
if it is too scary.
They love a good conjuring movie.
All of that.
But actually, this takes that to a whole other level.
Okay, so the mummy.
So that guy is doing the mummy.
We are crazy excited about it in roles.
He takes a spin on it in that the mummy
is how old was she supposed to be?
Well, she was eight initially.
She was missing for eight years.
So she was eight.
So we were talking about a mummy, a monster.
No, no, we say mummy.
She became a full-fledged monster in this movie.
Did she not?
Yes.
And so it was kind of even interesting
to see a child.
And she was adorable, that little actress.
I think that's their first movie.
Yes.
Adorable.
And she becomes the monster.
And roles, there was something about seeing
all this come out of an eight-year-old.
That was pretty fascinating to watch.
I thought the acting was really, really good.
I thought.
Yeah, the parents are great.
I thought the dialogue was great.
Yes, I mean, so the movie was well done.
I just think I had a bar set too high
about how scary it was going to be,
how gross it was going to be.
And I will say, I don't know, necessarily,
how folks like their horror movies to end.
But this one was wrapped up in a bow
in a way that I didn't love.
Was it wrapped up in such a way
that you think they're setting up
the possibility of a franchise or a sequel?
Of course they are.
Okay, that's what we're talking about.
Okay, I see that.
But yes, it was a little bit bullish.
I know what you're saying.
Yes, it wasn't a whole lot of mystery or anything.
I know what you're saying.
I get it.
It was a gift I already knew when I unwrapped it.
What was inside?
Okay, I'm with you.
That's fine.
I think this is where we made a mistake, Robes.
You are very good about this.
You don't want to read reviews ahead of a movie.
Sometimes we'll check at least a writing tomato score
for shits and giggles, but you know, for the most part,
we don't want to see what everybody else has to say
because going in, then you'll have an expectation.
Yes.
We have been told for a long time.
This was going to be the scariest damn thing
and you can't stomach it.
And it's just, and I think for us, Robes,
and we hear stuff like that,
given the horror movie fans we are,
it did set an expectation.
Now, I hope we don't sound like we are saying
this is not a good movie.
There was one point in the theater.
I was squeezing you and like, oh, it's about to be fun now.
Yes.
And it is a, if you like a horror movie,
this is a fun movie.
Wanted to point out the critic score has dropped.
When we went funny enough to the theaters earlier today,
the critic score was at 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It dropped to 47% critic score.
The audience scores at 79%, so a big disparity
between what the critics say and what the audience felt.
And so that was, I do usually like that disparity.
I prefer the audience score higher than the critic score.
That usually, to me, means I'm going to have a good time.
Okay, so what did you, let's do the likes and the dislikes.
What's in the positive column for you?
I thought the acting, just the visuals.
All of that was really good.
I would have liked more jump scares.
I love jump scares.
I'm going to stick with what you would like.
Oh, sorry.
I thought, you know, the visual effects were great.
And I liked the concept of the missing girl.
Like it was compelling.
I was, I was definitely drawn into the storyline.
The acting, I love the parents.
The grandma, I cannot remember what else she's been in, but I love her.
And a lot of people, when you see her, you'll recognize the grandma.
And she played very prominently in this movie in a fun way.
Yes.
Later, I say fun.
It was terrifying, but it was kind of cool.
To yes, the acting and the little girl was fantastic.
I think that house was a good setting.
And I love the mummy movies with Brendan Prasier and Rachel vice.
Am I saying her name?
Yes.
I love those movies.
Now, this isn't a reimagining necessarily, but the idea, the,
I guess the Egypt connection of the mummy, they make that mythology.
They make that connection.
And so I like that idea and that concept, but robes the difference
with those movies and that mummy actually did it all for love.
There was nothing about this monster that was any connection to why it's happening.
It's just a monster.
There was no, I don't, I don't need humanity, but I needed a backstory.
So yes, some of the, um, the critics who didn't like the movie said it was too much like the
exorcist and it wasn't enough about a mummy.
It was possession.
It was more about demonic possession and it was less about actually the whole mummy genre.
Because I love a good mummy story.
I love a good mummy mummy backstory.
And I didn't really think as I'm watching, I was hoping for that.
They didn't get a lot into why this group was even maintaining this mummy.
Like there was, there was just so much intrigue and Egyptian mythology.
When it comes to this stuff that I find interesting that wasn't present here.
Yeah, it ended up feeling more like a family was protecting their,
their offspring and future generations from demonic possession by having to pass
on this evil spirit to another family.
So it was less about the mummy story that we're used to.
And Robert, I know I leaned over to you certainly once, but maybe several times and said to
you, the detective is awesome.
Okay, there was, I don't know who she is, but she brought so much rope to this
movie. I just love that.
I guess she was kind of the moral base for the movie in some way.
I loved her.
That, yeah, that's a good way to put it.
That's exactly what her role was and she was great.
All of the acting was phenomenal.
So it was overall an enjoyable movie.
I would absolutely recommend it, but it didn't live up to the hype.
And even I say the negative hype because look, we love a movie that critics hate
because we are all in.
We're like, therefore, and so the hype either way, it didn't rise.
I didn't feel strongly in either direction enough for me to even feel like I
would write a passionate review either way.
That's a very good point.
I, do I have it right?
Rob, there were, there weren't there a couple of times.
What was the first one?
Oh, yeah.
It's some stuff seemed to be a logical person for most
that the girl was at home, right?
There were some parts of the movie that just did not make sense.
And we're used to horror movies, right?
I mean, really, you have to suspend logic a lot often,
but Rose, they, this girl is in pretty terrible shape.
And they just send her home with her parents.
Do like she's physically perfectly fine.
And we've run all the tests and there's nothing wrong with her.
Meantime, she's like purple gray.
She's vomiting and foaming at the mouth.
And like, and like can't breathe without like a rattling in her chest.
So that's to me, like, that was funny.
They're like, she's perfectly healthy.
You can take her home.
You shouldn't need a nurse or anything.
Meanwhile, they get to the point.
They literally have two padlocks on the door of her bedroom, Rose.
And they have her tied up at one point and they still won't call help or take her to the doctor.
Like, I think I'd probably call 911 before I chain my daughter to a bed.
So again, you have to, I love what the way you always put it with horror movies.
You have to suspend some logic and there was a certain degree we always give.
But at some point, we're like, we can solve this problem.
Guys, get her to an institution tonight.
Well, at one point, the father of him says, you know what?
I think maybe we should get some full time care for her.
I was like, you think like a week later, after she's chained and has levitated.
I mean, come on.
That's right.
I feel like we knew that a long, long time ago.
And also, we have to, and then we can be, look, there were some questionable parenting in this movie, right?
Parents didn't realize that their child had been hanging out with a stranger in the back,
being groomed for how long and then it has been going on a while while the moms at home.
And then the one time the girl gets abducted, the dads at home, right?
I was like, Oh, this is not going to go over well in the marriage.
She's like, of course, she gets abducted on your watch.
And that literally happened to play that fight happened.
Then Rob, it was hilarious that one of the girl, well, the monster is crawling out of the ceiling
during a funeral and nobody notices the other girls pulling her teeth out,
throwing them on the floor in the middle of a car.
Nobody notices there was something they were really focused on their grief.
I like, come on, y'all.
So some of that stuff, again, just spend some logic, but they were moments in there.
We can't have scratched our heads.
Yes, I think the idea is to go into a movie like this with just an open mind
and know that you can laugh a lot while you're trying to get a little scared.
But it's more, I think if you look at it more from a comedic horror standpoint,
I know that's not what they were going for.
But that to me is the best way to view this movie.
You know what, Rob, this is, thank you.
This is one that it's hard to find the balance, but to find a
fun, scary movie that's not meant to be a comedy.
This was a fun movie experience.
I enjoyed it.
It took a moment to get going, but you know when it got going, I said, baby,
oh, it's a guy to get fun now because you could just tell something was ramping up.
And the other thing I felt about the movie, Rob's almost the entire time it never let you go.
That's true.
You were anticipating something weird, some moment.
What's about to happen?
That was intent.
I didn't even get up and go through the bathroom a single time during this movie.
And I needed to.
I did too.
And I did neither because I didn't want to miss the thing.
And it was two hours long plus it didn't feel like it to me.
I agree.
I agree.
But stay here.
After all this, I think Rob's at one point you said you probably would recommend it.
However, we do need to tell you who this movie is not for stay here.
We'll explain who we would and wouldn't recommend this one too.

Welcome back, everyone, to this episode of Amy and TJ,
where we just saw Lee Cronin's The Mummy literally just walked out of the theater,
and came and sat down to talk about our thoughts on this.
Widely reviewed, and passionately reviewed movie,
because it seemed like either you loved it or you hated it,
and funny enough, I feel like I'm somewhere in between.
How about you? I liked it.
I was prepared for this to be an all-timer for me,
right, the way it was being talked about.
But I end again, Roaks, we love,
I'm gonna, we had it on this morning,
crazy as it sounds when we do,
we're recording our morning run in our early morning episodes.
I had this movie playing this morning,
just an anticipation of watching his new movie.
So I had really high expectations of him,
evil dead rice, we're talking about.
Yeah, I'm sorry, I never made a name in the movie.
Yes, I was watching that.
So I think we set our expectations too high,
based on a lot of what we were seeing,
and that had an impact on what we actually saw in the theater,
but it was good, it was fun, it was fine, it was cool,
it was, I mean, it was all those things,
and it was quite enjoyable.
I mean, sometimes it's just a good movie experience.
Yeah, I don't regret going,
and I actually enjoyed watching it,
it just didn't necessarily jive with what I was reading,
but I had a few favorite critic reviews I saw.
I thought you would love this one from the Los Angeles Times,
this one just came in.
All these moments are good for audience groans,
and there's an enjoyable bad movie here for the season.
So he gave it a bad review,
but he acknowledged that it's an enjoyable bad movie.
That's how he put it.
I liked this one too, Dan Scully,
as much as I would have liked to see a new take on the Mummy,
I'm pleased as Punch to see a new take on A Mummy,
even if it really is just Egypt Dead Rise.
Yeah, yeah, and it's okay,
I hope this is rare that I am the one
who wants more of a backstory,
but there was, I am, I am very,
some of my favorite movies, I love those Mummy movies,
but the Mummy, it all happened because he was in love,
and then he ended up being condemned,
and he came back because he was trying to bring his love back.
That's a story.
I think a lot of people went into it,
hoping there was going to be a nod to that, and there wasn't.
Audience sample, I love this review.
I really liked the movie,
The Gore and the Visual Moments were crazy.
I would have just renamed the movie,
The Exorcism of Katie Cannon,
after the Evil Mummy Rises.
Too much, it's the point being.
It was absolutely a borrowed concept from the Mummy,
from the Exorcist, and from Evil Dead Rise.
It was, it was a demonic possession movie more
so than anything else.
It was, but I still liked it.
I did too.
And it's enjoyable.
Now, who would you say this one is not for you?
Because some of the stuff was,
I think we've seen a lot, but Robes,
I didn't find any of this more uncomfortable
than the stuff.
It's funny, people keep talking about the toenail scene.
Okay, but I didn't need to look away.
Wasn't that bad?
Robes, I give it.
I'm with you.
I thought it was going to be so much worse.
I thought that scene was kind of fun, because the mom
had to put so much of her weight in effort
to clipping the toenails.
The girl's thick, demonic toenails.
It was kind of fun.
I like that scene.
Yeah, I did too.
Did mind it at all.
I mean, I do think though, if you do get kind of squeamish,
or you don't like anything that's got Gore in it,
do not go see this movie, it probably is not for you.
If there's some liquid transfer at times,
that's no good.
Yes, but there's some every demonic possession
you have liquid, you know, and not the biting scenes,
I actually appreciated.
It wasn't that bad.
I thought it was funny.
Wow, Robes, it wasn't that, I guess we see too much.
We need to know.
I think maybe if I went back and watched now
that I don't expect it to be so scary,
I think I could laugh more, because there actually
were some darkly comedic scenes,
but maybe I was, yeah, there was.
But I thought I was, I think I was just waiting for it
to be scarier.
That was my biggest let down.
So I think if you're looking for something
that you think is going to make you jump,
whether it's really going to scare you,
if you just go, that's, this is not a movie for you,
but if you go into a movie just to be entertained,
to see a twist on the mummy and the exorcist,
and recognize you're probably not going to be scared,
and you might be a little grossed out,
but if you can look at it with some of the,
I think some of the funny dialogue that was in there,
you can really enjoy this movie.
It was a fun movie.
Yeah.
It was, the more you talk about it now,
it really was a fun movie.
By the way, it did $1.5 million on its preview night,
which began at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
So that means that they're eyeing
an opening weekend of around 12 million.
And the expectations were 10 to 15,
so that would be right in line.
Okay.
The picture cost 22 million.
Okay.
So it's likely that it should,
it probably won't do gangbusters,
but it will probably do well enough.
But this is one, this is one you need a good word about.
You need to folks to run out and say,
holy hell, and maybe some will.
And we recommend, we absolutely recommend this movie
and go see it and you're going to have a good time.
Yes.
But this is, Rob, do you do something I notice?
You do a lot in movies and sometimes you get embarrassed.
It's fine.
You jump a lot.
Yes.
I think jump one.
Little things, like it doesn't matter what movie.
It could be a B movie from 1975.
It doesn't matter.
You will, it something happens, you're jumpy
and it's a thing you do no matter what.
How great that that you are.
Because I'm in it, like I'm in it, I'm watching.
No matter how many horror movies you watch.
I jump, never jump once.
Not one time.
Did you one time?
And I would have thought this would have had jump scares,
but it did not.
So just go into it with those expectations
and you should be able to enjoy yourself.
Well folks, good luck.
Let us know how you enjoy the movie.
We appreciate you spending some time with us.
It's always up to you.

I personally love the peaches and cream,
but maybe you're a root beer floater,
cinnamon roll kind of person.
Premiere Protein powers me to say yes to more.
Find your favorite flavor at premierprotein.com.
That's P-R-E-M-I-E-R, protein.com,
or at Amazon, Walmart, and other major retailers.
We have all been duped by the so-called
better-for-you ice cream options.
They claim to be just as delicious as regular ice cream,
but it's really more like a mouthful of chalk.
But don't despair, I have good news.
Yasuo is the real deal.
They took everything you crave about ice cream
and upgraded it with creamy frozen Greek yogurt.
Their new Spoonables are around 400 calories per container,
19 grams of protein and five ridiculous flavors.
And because they know how many of us have been burned
by better-for-you ice cream,
Yasuo is giving away 40,000 and one Spoonables.
