The NFL is making moves this week.
1:10
But what I really want to know is whether or not more moves are coming out of linebacker
1:14
or in the interior of the offensive line.
1:18
You are locked on commanders.
1:20
Your daily podcast on the Washington commanders.

Your team every day.
1:29
Welcome inside today's episode of lots on commanders.
1:32
I am your host, your guy on the ground, David Harrison.
1:35
And on today's episode.
1:37
We are here in Phoenix, Arizona as the league wide moves are going to be made.
1:42
They're going to be discussed by owners, coaches and GMs.
1:45
And ultimately voted on in the way that we watch football.
1:48
Potentially going to change beginning in 2026.
1:51
Just like it potentially changes every single season.
1:53
But before we get to the big picture.
1:55
I do want to focus in on Washington.
1:57
Of course, because that's why you come through lots on commanders, right?
2:00
Is the Washington focus.
2:01
And certainly the big picture stuff.
2:03
Is absolutely going to impact the Washington commanders.
2:05
But there is more minute things that are going to impact the watch commanders.
2:09
So you've got a list here of seven, eight items.
2:11
Or so I have encountered them.
2:12
But items that I want to learn more about possibly.
2:14
Or just share with you that we're not going to learn more about here.
2:17
In Phoenix during the annual league meetings.
2:20
But one of the first things that I'd like to hear.
2:22
Dan Quinn and Adam Peters both.
2:24
Discuss here in Phoenix as we will get time with both men here on the record.
2:29
Is the future of the linebacker position.
2:31
Future of the interior offensive linebacker.
2:34
I did see a report shortly after I landed here in Phoenix.
2:37
John Conn of ESPN was a little bit of information at a Dan Quinn.
2:40
Saying that the door is open for a Bobby Wagner to return.
2:43
Which of course is something that we have asserted and discussed.
2:46
You know, multiple times during the offseason here on the program.
2:49
That if he wants to come back.
2:51
It's really kind of up to him.
2:53
And then they'll kind of just go from there.
2:55
But Dan Quinn did tell John that apparently they do feel comfortable.
2:58
With the talent they have in the room, which of course.
3:01
It's one it's something that he's got to say because what is he going to do?
3:04
Whether by not do Jordan McGee ain't it.
3:06
Man, Leo Chanel ain't it.
3:09
But they do also believe that the Quinn actually does have confidence in the.
3:13
In the depth in the room where we guys in the room right now.
3:16
If they have to move forward without Bobby.
3:18
But also the interior offensive line.
3:20
Like what is going on.
3:21
The interior offensive line group.
3:24
You know, going to be expected to be just kind of the slam dunk starter.
3:26
And I wouldn't expect to get any true defendant of answers.
3:29
Like yeah, Nick is our guy rolling into the summer in and all that kind of stuff.
3:33
But just kind of get some insight, get some thoughts.
3:35
From Dan Quinn, Adam Peters into the future.
3:37
And the current state of both those positions also want to talk to Dan Quinn.
3:42
About kind of risk assessment, kind of forming a risk assessment.
3:46
And scheming safety for Jayden Daniel, right?
3:48
I've talked about this plenty of times here a lot of time commanders.
3:50
Protecting the quarterback.
3:51
Is really a multi tiered operation, right?
3:53
A lot of times we put it kind of solely on the offensive line.
3:56
I know some people have put it solely on Jayden Daniels himself making smart decisions.
4:00
Not taking unnecessary hits.
4:02
But there is an element to the scheme as well.
4:05
And we have heard Dan Quinn kind of talk about scheme.
4:07
And then we have the next one.
4:08
And then we have the next one.
4:09
And then we have the next one.
4:10
And then we have the next one.
4:11
And then we have the next one.
4:12
And then we have the next one.
4:13
And then we have the next one.
4:14
And then we have the next one.
4:15
Oh, well, we don't want to talk about scheme and safety before with Cliff Kingsbury.
4:21
So I just kind of want to ask the included possible kind of where the risk assessment.
4:28
ance comes in on David Blau.
4:30
When how much of that.
4:32
You're really kind of trying to integrate into the scheme.
4:34
That David importage more getting my stance isn't pretty much can always stay that it's a little bit of.
4:35
each, it might even be like 33%, 33%, 33%,
4:39
online Jaden and the scheme designed
4:42
on protecting Jaden Daniels.
4:44
And then that gets you to 99% and on any given play,
4:47
that 1% goes to one of those other three areas
4:51
depending on the play.
4:51
So getting to Adam Peters, Adafee Ohway,
4:54
the crown jewel of his for agency class here,
4:57
this offseason, the biggest name that he was able to land.
5:00
You know, we know that he went after some other,
5:01
the bigger names that were out there on the market,
5:04
but what compelled Adam Peters?
5:05
I know what I liked, I know what a lot of you liked
5:08
or even some of you don't like about Adafee Ohway,
5:10
but I wanna hear from Adam Peters himself,
5:12
what is it that sparked him giving or agreeing
5:15
to that $100 million contract with Adafee Ohway,
5:18
$68 million of a guarantee over the next four years
5:21
and sticking with AP, how his initial assessment of where,
5:25
they may not be as top-heavy, right?
5:27
Or as top-level secured as kind of the way,
5:29
thinking about worrying where the talent
5:31
at the top of the depth chart in specific positions,
5:33
I'm not gonna ask him to necessarily identify those positions,
5:36
but I'm sure we'll get into like,
5:37
hey, are there any groups that you really still want
5:40
to kind of approach as you move deeper into the offseason?
5:43
But just in the internal assessment,
5:45
when you look at each individual position group
5:47
or position itself, how your vision
5:50
or how your view of where that top-level talent sits,
5:53
really impacts your approach in the draft
5:55
and that kind of goes back to the best player available
5:57
versus team needs type of conversation.
6:00
And then really, as you get deeper into kind
6:03
of the draft room, dynamics and the war rooms,
6:05
you know, we know Adan Peters is a big teamwork type of guy.
6:08
He likes to hear from his coaches,
6:10
likes to hear from his coordinators, things like that.
6:12
But I wonder if the amount of feedback
6:15
or maybe the specificity of the feedback he's receiving,
6:17
the level of the specificity he's getting from his coaches
6:20
has maybe evolved since 2024 when he did it for the first time.
6:24
roster and stadium updates from Josh Harris,
6:27
obviously a role roster updates from Adan Peters and Dan Quinn,
6:30
uniform and stadium updates from, yeah,
6:33
I mean, I'm sure both those guys will get asked
6:35
Adan Peter to think what probably get asked
6:36
about the uniform changes.
6:38
Maybe they'll get asked himself about the stadium,
6:40
but really Josh is kind of the guy for the stadium updates,
6:43
the branding updates, things like that,
6:46
including any plans to use natural grass in the new stadiums.
6:49
Northwest stadium uses natural grass.
6:51
Players last year were kind of making a push
6:54
to try to get the NFL owners to commit to using natural grass
6:59
So I'm curious as the washmairs move indoors in 2030,
7:02
is the plan to use natural grass?
7:04
Is the plan to use turf or how they even gotten that far?
7:07
Yeah, of course, new uniforms will get talked
7:08
about training camp plans could potentially come up.
7:11
2018 was the last time the washmairs hosted
7:13
a joint training camp session successfully.
7:16
Last year they had plans to bring the Baltimore Ravens in,
7:18
but the Baltimore Ravens backed out not the last minutes
7:21
or are there any plans this year to try to run that back
7:24
as the washmairs get to home playoff
7:26
or preseason games versus having the one preseason game
7:30
because they had the additional away game
7:32
in the regular season this year.
7:34
And then international game updates, I would love them.
7:37
Typically we don't get them this week,
7:39
but it is kind of out there on the horizon.
7:41
So you know, something that maybe just be aware of,
7:44
I doubt we're gonna get updates there to heavily.
7:47
So those are some of the things
7:48
that are more kind of micro lens,
7:50
washing the commanders focus.
7:52
Now let's turn the page over to lead wide things
7:55
that are gonna be happening here in Phoenix,
7:56
during the NFL's annual league meeting
7:58
and how they impact the wash some commanders,
8:00
potentially if they go through.
8:01

10:34
Continuing our conversation about the annual lead meetings
10:37
here in Phoenix, Arizona.
10:38
We are once again on the road.
10:40
Last week, Columbus, Ohio, this week's Phoenix, Arizona,
10:43
annual the meeting.
10:44
Obviously, we get some time with the commander's brass.
10:47
It's a really big opportunity for us
10:48
general manager, Adam Peters, head coach, Dan Quinn,
10:51
owner, Josh Harris.
10:52
But the NFL isn't here just so that we can talk to Adam
10:54
Peters, Dan Quinn and Josh Harris.
10:56
The NFL is also here to make league wide sweeping moves.
11:00
In fact, the NFL will probably tell you that's actually
11:01
why they're here and the part that we just talked about first,
11:04
which is the priority for us.
11:05
It's actually not the priority.
11:06
So again, it just kind of depends on the the fox while you're
11:09
standing in the the lens you're looking at it through, right?
11:12
So some of the things in the league is considering that
11:15
the owners and GM's and coaches are going to talk about
11:17
and vote on and all that kind of stuff here this week are
11:20
going to have absolute obviously ramifications for the
11:22
watchmakers specifically starting with the replacement
11:25
ref contingency plan.
11:26
So if you don't know already, the National Football League
11:29
referees Association, NFL R.A. is potentially going to go
11:34
on strike, they're going to lock out or hold out or whatever
11:36
they want to call whatever it is, potentially not going to
11:38
work and potentially what you're looking at is replacement
11:40
refs. And if you don't remember the replacement refs from
11:43
the last time that happened, the most popular cliff going
11:46
around is Seattle Seahawks versus the Green Bay Packers pass
11:49
goes into the end zone.
11:50
Two guys basically come down fighting for the ball.
11:53
One of the replacement ref signals touched down.
11:55
One of the replacement ref signals interception and touch
11:58
back and it's just crazy.
11:59
And you know, at that very moment, one team is about to get
12:03
No matter how that turns out, if you're a packers fan and it
12:06
goes your way, you're like, yeah, they got it right.
12:09
Everything was good.
12:10
And that Seahawks fans say we got screwed.
12:12
If you're a Seahawks fan there, then they and you goes
12:15
your way, then you got it right.
12:16
And the other team is going to say they got screwed.
12:18
There's no winning.
12:19
Once that happens, there's no winning.
12:21
So that is most popular replacement ref clip from the last
12:24
time we went through this.
12:25
But the Washington committee or the Washington area, the
12:27
National Football League is trying to do something to try to
12:30
kind of curb the drop off in, I don't know if you want to
12:34
call it talent, call it whatever you want, but they're
12:36
instituting or presenting a proposal here to allow the
12:39
officiating command center with the ability to assist on
12:43
field officials, which right now is limited strictly to
12:46
objective rulings like align the gain or clock issues, things
12:50
like that, they can't nullify penalties, they can't call
12:52
a penalty that wasn't called things like that in review, but
12:55
the proposed change for one year only, just 2026, during the
12:59
referee strike would give the command center the ability to
13:03
correct clear and obvious misses is the quote unquote from
13:06
the proposal by the replacement ref.
13:08
So this would be obviously a big expansion by the quote, unquote
13:12
sky judge, the eye of the sky, and all those things, the
13:14
league office would basically temporarily have the power to
13:18
fix miss calls like roughing the pastures, groundings,
13:21
flagrant penalties, things like that, like that while also
13:24
nullifying calls that are made that maybe aren't made, right?
13:27
You've seen times where a defender reaches up and grabs like
13:30
the shoulder pad and tries to pull a player and the player's
13:32
head goes with it and they call a face mask.
13:34
Well, the command center of the eye in the sky, what
13:37
everyone call it would have the ability to fix that if the
13:42
replacement refs are put in place.
13:43
My understanding is this is only a replacement ref thing.
13:45
So if this say this rule passes and I might be able to
13:48
get clarification on that, but if this rule passes to my
13:51
understanding, it's going to be completely clear here to my
13:53
understanding, if the rule passes, but then the rest don't
13:56
strike and we don't need to replace the refs, then it's not
13:59
it's not necessary, although I would like for it to be a
14:04
saying anyway, personally, I think they can do it pretty
14:06
quickly, but that's just topic for another day.
14:09
But so my understanding is this is just a replacement
14:11
refs thing. Again, I can clarification on that. It need
14:14
be, but interesting item there. The second topic we were
14:17
talking about special teams. So the team, the NFL is continuing
14:20
to kind of tinker with the kickoff rule, I think, honestly,
14:23
the new kickoff, which was a little bit weird at first, I
14:26
think, special teams coordinators have done a really good job
14:28
of scheming it up and it's been pretty effective. The new
14:31
onsite kick proposal is that teams can attempt it on side
14:34
kick anytime when they're trailing not just in the fourth
14:37
quarter, currently, you can only do it in the fourth quarter
14:39
and you have to be trailing. They want it to be any time
14:42
that a team is trailing, digging the tempted onsite kick. I
14:45
do believe they would still have to announce it, which kind of
14:48
takes a little bit of the fun out of it kickoff set up the
14:50
current rule. You have to have at least six players on the
14:52
receding team with their front foot on the restraining line,
14:56
quote unquote, the new rule change would require that at least
14:59
five players have one foot on the restraining line. So you
15:02
would have one more player that you can kind of move, give
15:04
the coordinators a little bit more to work with when scheming. And
15:08
then the final kickoff rule proposal touchbacks from the 50
15:13
yard line currently kicking out of bounds gives the receiving
15:15
team great field position, but a touchback heavily penalizes
15:18
the kicking team under the current kickoff rules, the trade
15:22
proposal, if a kickoff from the 50 results in a touchback, the
15:25
ball is then placed at the 20 yard line. So obviously, there
15:28
would be a penalty on the extra point or something on the
15:31
field goal, try that resulted in the kickoff being from the
15:33
50. And then if the team just boots it out of the out of the
15:36
field play, they would come back to the 20 yard line. Again,
15:39
it would restore the advantage of the kicking team when
15:41
kicking from the 50, removing the kind of mathematical incentive
15:45
that the defense really has to to allow these penalties to
15:49
happen. Third topic, roster building and trade proposals, there
15:52
is a proposal on the board for teams to be able to trade
15:55
picks up to five seasons in the future. Currently, you can
15:58
only trade up to three seasons in the future and would open up
16:02
a lot of flexibility for general managers and not surprisingly
16:06
to me, the Cleveland Browns are the team that recommended this.
16:08
So, you know, whatever, personally, if I was an owner, I don't
16:12
know how this would sit with me because, and this is something
16:15
on my NASH Josh Harris about because of my GM, you know, this
16:18
year's on the hot seat and trades, three number one picks in
16:21
the future for Max Crosby or something crazy. And I end up
16:25
firing this guy, then the next GM, as I go, they're trying to
16:28
track the next top GM on the open market. I'm trying to hire
16:32
dude, telling them like, Hey, you don't have three first
16:34
Trump picks your first three years. That's a little bit weird.
16:37
But again, owners kind of always hold the the ability to kind
16:41
of veto that and say, like, now we're not doing that anyway.
16:43
So, you know, again, I don't know how much of a worry that would
16:46
really be. I think if I asked Josh Harris that, he might get like,
16:48
yeah, you know, it's not really concerned now that I always just
16:50
tell him, no, we're not doing the trade. But we'd like to hear
16:53
from Josh himself on that topic. I mean, that was not an
16:57
imitation, by the way, that was just my like, if I was known, that's kind
17:00
of how I would look at it is like, Hey, dude, I can veto this.
17:02
Anyway, like, it's not like I'm just going to tell my GM, Hey, go do
17:05
whatever you want, buddy. And I'm just going to sit here and suck my
17:07
thumb, like, no, like before you make a trade, we're going to talk
17:10
about it. And if I need to tell you, no, you're not doing it, I'll
17:12
tell you know, you're not doing it. If you want to go to the media
17:14
and say if I'm intervening or interfering or whatever, then,
17:18
Hey, so be a free agency tweaks prior to the 2025 year.
17:22
NFL teams could not have direct video or phone conversation
17:26
with pending unrestricted free agents during the two day
17:29
open negotiating window. This year, they tested out teams were allowed to have
17:33
up to five video or phone calls with players instead of just their agents
17:38
before they can only talk to their agents. So up to five players that were
17:41
unrestricted free agents, they have an up to one hour phone or video
17:45
call with those players. I asked Lee O'Shamel if he took part, if that was
17:49
kind of part of his process, he said it was, he said it was pretty
17:51
effective. I didn't get to ask everybody because truthfully, I didn't know
17:54
who all they use those calls on. And I wanted to ask every single player,
17:57
mom, but I might be able to get more clarification on that.
18:00
This year's or this week, but they are talking about making that a
18:03
permanent shift, which I think, yeah, that's that's, I mean, it makes a lot of
18:06
sense, right? Let guys, let the team have the security of talking to the
18:10
player, let the player have some security of talking, especially where
18:13
you're probably talking more like mid-level players to try to get that
18:18
done. So injections and injury rules, the command center currently, the
18:22
officiating command center, the iron sky, big brother, where everyone
18:25
want to call it, right now can only instruct an on-field crew to
18:28
disqualify a player if a penalty was actually called on the field.
18:32
If this rule change goes through, then that command center, the iron sky,
18:35
would actually be able to eject a player for a, say, flagrant foul or
18:39
something ridiculous, even if a flag wasn't thrown because the
18:42
official didn't see it. And obviously, those would be kind of extreme
18:45
situations. There's a pop list edition alteration on the board as well
18:49
right now. Players that are on the result reserve pop list physically
18:53
unable to perform. Pop list can't begin their 21 day return window for
18:58
practice until after the team's fourth game of the year. The
19:01
proposal currently on the table is to shift that to the second game of the
19:04
year. So if a player starts the year on the reserve pop list, they wouldn't
19:07
have to automatically miss the first four games. They would have to automatically
19:10
miss the first two games, but then could potentially start their 21 day
19:14
window to return. And then finally, some, some reserve, some event
19:19
logistics just for your own personal knowledge. I don't think a lot of the
19:21
stuff seems streamed and things like that. But the meetings do start Sunday,
19:25
March 29th. That is the day. The morning that we're recording this, I'm
19:28
going to record this, get it posted on YouTube into your audio streams and
19:32
head over to the event center to start seeing what we find out this week.
19:36
And then Monday and Tuesday, it runs Monday through Tuesday.
19:41
And then we will be back home Wednesday morning as it were. So
19:46
here in Phoenix, Arizona, NFC coaches Monday morning, 745,
19:50
bright and early, we will be talking to Dan Quinn, ASC coaches will come up
19:54
after that. Certainly, some things potentially green from those
19:57
conversations as well. Next time on Lockdown Commanders,
20:01
mock draft Monday, I have hosts of Lockdown Commanders,
20:05
