The Houston Texans added another offensive lineman to the roster, signing Evan Brown, but what does this move really mean for Houston heading into the NFL Draft?
On today’s episode of Locked On Texans, we break down Brown’s true value to the Texans offensive line. Brown has logged a ton of snaps at left guard and center, giving Houston flexibility in the trenches. He’s not a Pro Bowl player, but he’s been solid, reliable, and part of several strong rushing attacks throughout his career. You could even call him a mercenary for productive run games.
Brown moves his feet well in 1-on-1 blocking situations, but there are still things to clean up — including penalties (13 over the last three seasons) and a slower get-off at the snap. Still, his versatility could be exactly what GM Nick Caserio wants as the Texans continue building their offensive line.
We also break down the Texans’ first week of NFL free agency and why we’re giving Houston a solid B grade. The Texans didn’t land a lot of flashy difference-makers, but Caserio locked in team-friendly contracts that protect the salary cap and keep the roster flexible.
So what’s next?
The 2026 NFL Draft could be where the Texans finally get over the hump — especially on offense.

Why his LG/C versatility matters for Houston
Texans free agency grade: B — fair or too generous?

Hey, guys, what's next for Houston?
What is next for the Houston Texans?
What will the rest of free agency possibly bring for Houston or should all of us be on
the 2026 draft for the Texans?
And listen, we got to grade the first week of free agency, right?
ABCD, what do you give to the Houston Texans that are really trying to kind of figure
out some things that are offensively bringing some guys in, letting some guys walk.
I think in many ways, it's just a fair week, so we'll dive into my grade and I want
to hear your grade as well.
But the Texans add Evan Brawling to the offensive line, I actually like to move a lot.
But when we look at Evan Brawling, will he be a Depth Peace for Houston or is he going
to be a transitional player for the Houston Texans?
What am I talking about?
You're going to make sure he's tick around.
But shout out to my every day is from the Himalayas making the Lockdown Texans podcast,

I know it's been a couple of days, but the Houston Texans have a tendency to make some
deals shake right after recording.
So I want to give it a couple of days before I got back to you guys and that's exactly
what happened.
Evan Brawling being added to the roster.

a college football basketball, college basketball, I part-layed profit boost, excuse me.
Head over to fandole.com to get started before we dive into Evan Brown.
I wanted to touch on the Wyatt Teller to Houston situation.
As I've said before, staying away from those Brown's offensive, I'm a specifically
Wyatt Teller is the best move for the Houston Texans, plus the Evan Brown pivot takes us
inside the mind of Nick Cicero and I think where he is right now.
Brown is a one year deal for $3.5 million, right, a life changing money for a lot of us,
those guys in the field players.
Which I'm going to make it to the lead, however, based on this alone, the 3.5 mil one year
based on that alone, it screams we're looking to grow in the draft and does it make sense
to commit to a vet online with real injury concerns long-term.
I mean, I think that's where we're looking at the situation.
Wyatt Teller, if this was three seasons ago, Houston probably would be all on it, right?
Maybe, maybe not.
There are free agency decisions that our first one has been skeptical since Nick Cicero
has arrived at Houston.
But three years ago, it would have made a lot of sense to bring in Wyatt Teller.
Over the last two seasons, we've seen someone up with a client last year.
We've seen that slippery slope really drop off in terms of performance.
And I think right now in his career, Wyatt Teller is looking for a long term commitment
for the Houston Texans.
They were not willing to give that.
At least that's my thoughts as of right now.
Things could change next week.
We'll talk about the first week of free agency and a lot of you guys have Wyatt Teller
highlighting the list based on just doing research and talking with people in circles around the league.
It was in Houston's best favor to best, it's in Houston's best interest, excuse me,
to not look at Wyatt Teller.
Now, to Evan Brown, this guy has seen a ton of snaps and left garden center, right?
You love that.
You're going to love that.
And he's played some good position, a good ball at both positions.
Not in a pro-bow level or anything like that.
But he's been extremely solid over the years.
And also what you like is, he's been a part of some really good Russian teams.
And I mean, he's really been a mercenary for good Russian teams.
2021 with the Detroit Lions, 4.4 yards per carry.
22 with the Lions, 4.5 yards per carry.
That also with a tie-five office in the league.
23 with the Seattle Seahawks, 4.1 yards per carry.
2024 with the Arizona Cardinals, 5.5 yards per carry.
Even this past year, a bad Cardinals team, 4.3 yards per carry.
So like I said, he's a mercenary wherever he can go and help an offensive line out,
be better in terms of rushing the ball, that he's going to make his impact feel.
And I think of all of the things that Tex and fans want to hear, that should be number one.
That should be number one.
They did back to his time with Detroit.
Brown has been pretty good in space, understanding where the ball is going on the ground
and getting the hand on the second level defender, Azalee Blocker out in front, leading that way.
Moves his feet very well while engaged.
I think that's an extremely great trait, especially in one-on-one situations.
Pilates have been a problem that he used to clean up 13 in the last three years.
I saw a little slow to get off the snap based on some of the things that I saw last year
and then it back to a couple of seasons before.
But the question is, is Brown a dead player or a transitional piece?
Brown is going to give Houston a ton of flexibility in this year's draft.
With him having the ability to play left guard and center, starting at both positions in this league.
And being again, like I said, pretty good at it.
Not in the pro-bow player, not in the pro-player, but he's one of those guys where you look
and run an offensive line, IE, let's take a look at what he did in Detroit.
Those two seasons, 4.4, 4.5, that was a great offensive line, right?
But you're looking in the middle saying, wow, even Brown, he had a good game.
The guys around him are much better, right?
But it hasn't been like he's been a weaker link, especially when the talent across the offensive line,
across the board has been pretty good.
So he's not a weaker link.
He's just not the guy at the center spot.
And we know centers in the league can kind of get overlooked.
And let's you have a big name.
A lot of people across 32 teams may not know who their starting center is.
So been really good in the league.
I think for Houston, his true upside for the Texans will be at the center.
We found out towards the end of the year that Andrews was dealing with an injury,
and it's obvious Houston likes him.
But it's also obvious that Houston really wants the best option for center
without overpaying or crippling their cap down the line.
So that's so, you know, hey, any one K-Mays, let me just take that back.
They didn't want K-Mays.
Maybe Linda Ball was their guy, but they were extremely priced out.
And that was going to hurt them down the line in terms of making sure that
Will, CJ, and Extension for Niko, all of those, you know,
the money that they want to have in place for those players are intact.
And so you look at Houston, don't they did an upgrading in that center position,
possibly center or maybe left guard depending on what happens next
for Houston or the next, let's say, two months, but half.
A little seed, but down the line, the cap is still intact for Houston.
Brown is perfect in that sense.
And he is a legitimate upgrade at this point in his career at center
and also left guard for Houston.
Right now, I'm starting to love guard as Jerry Paterson.
Right now, I'm starting to center is Jake Andrews.
He's an upgrade over both of those players as of right now in each of their careers.
Plus, this gives Houston the option to take another shot in my opinion,
because I feel like he's best at center.
This allows for Houston to take a shot at finding their next franchise,
left guard in the draft without having to rush to get him on the field.
Right.
In many ways, we look at the failure of King and Green.
And some of that is on King and Green.
I mean, when he was here, he owned a lot of it.
But was he ever really ready to start week one day one?
I don't think he was.
Not from a physical standpoint, maybe not from a mental standpoint.
And then in when we're looking at a guy that's out the league,
Houston wants to maybe rewrite their wrongs,
and make sure that if they find the guy that they extremely high on,
if he's not ready, we got a guy that can go out there.
And that's that center of all guard.
So I think we're looking at a transitional player that will provide Houston,
I'm gonna say the ton of flexibility and versatility,
which all signs point to the draft to finalize their roster.
He puts Houston in a position to not have to chase
an interior offensive lineman throughout the draft, right?
And over draft, the player just simply because of desperation.
I think when we look at why Brown is in Houston now,
the center spot is the spot that we can point to being an upgrade.
Even at left guard, he's an upgrade there for Houston,
right, his versatility, what he brings in terms of IQ,
out of space, he's been good.
And every team he's been at, he's been an upgrade.
And it's been good in terms of being able to be in a run blocker
at that center or left guard, left guard spot.
And everything he's played on, those are all great attributes to have.
But his addition simply allows for Houston to not be in desperation.
And maybe with those picks that I suspected,
and many of you suspected Houston would use on an online,
maybe now it can go towards a skill player
that can ask him explosiveness to this offense
or that could put Houston in a position
whether it be between the first or second round pick
to go best player available.
And also with two second round picks,
Houston could very well pass some of these picks together
to make a move, to move up, make a splash
while still drafting a good offensive line talent in that second round.
So I think Houston is in a good spot right now
in terms of what they can do on the offensive line
with the addition of Evan Brown.
And in many ways, like I said, he's not a name,
he's not a sexy player, but in many ways,
he is a needle mover for the Houston Texans now.
Let's dive into the grades for the first week of free agency
for the Houston Texans.
On the other side, we have more locked on Texans talk.

And as we continue looking at the Houston Texans free agency,
we'll grade it.
First week, all right, I give it a solid B.
I'm looking at the total moves, it's extensions aside, right?
Trains aside, because when I'm talking about free agency,
let's keep in mind the Texans traded for David Montgomery
for free agency weekend thought.
So, Houston retains Trent Brown and Eddie Gromoneo line,
along with Sheldon Rankins.
The new faces are, as we just talked about,
Evan Brown, re-blackenship, Dominique Robinson.
The biggest name of the bunch may be Braden Smith
and my personal favorite signing of the new faces,
Foster Moreau, Houston did, did not go after no big names.
No big names, right?
This is a team that isn't, did their big names,
maybe a side from the Neil Hunter.
Houston's big names have come through the draft.
Stinley drafted, Kamari the drafted, Kaelin drafted,
Will drafted, Aziz, I wouldn't call him a big name,
but I would call him, why would I label Aziz?
An important name, an impactful name.
That's how I would label Aziz.
So, Houston typically builds their big names
through the draft, so no big names, right?
But schematic and personnel fits.
That's what the Houston Texas went after.
Guys, hit me out before overreacting.
We're reacting in general because some of you may agree
with me when I give it a B.
And in some ways, this is C plus,
but I'm going to say, what I'm going to say isn't our bad.
In fact, I think there's some good to it.
Do I feel like Houston now has some difference makers?
Some might say that Houston got Braden Smith
and to that point, I would say that he's not going
to raise the floor of this team in right tackle,
similar to Titus Howard.
I don't think that they, I think Braden Smith
is a Titus Howard replacement.
I'm trying to force him to lift guard.
He's the center, I mean, he's the right tackle.
I'm forcing them over, guys.
But on the right side of the ball,
we look at Ingram and Brown,
two guys that are returning back to the offensive line
in the previous year, the offensive line rush
for 3.9 yards per carry.
So, I don't consider them to be different makers
and with the addition of Smith,
I am not sure how much of Trent Brown will see this year.
Now, maybe you'll look at the margin of success
between Brown and Smith.
Smith having the ability to maybe be a little bit more
healthier for 17 games compared to Brown,
who only played in seven games, nine games last season.
Now, Braden Smith didn't play in all games last season.
So, you know, you'll look at that,
maybe that's the concern for some people.
However, I do think that,
or you could compare the two,
maybe 3.9 is four point flat,
which Smith, or maybe 4.1 yards per carry.
So, we'll see.
And I say that because again,
I think that Braden Smith will take over
at ranked tackle for the Houston Texans.
Now, Evan Brown, being a replacement for Duke Scruggs
is not fair to Brown,
because again, he is much better in much better player
at this stage of his career.
So, the thought now is at the very least,
his addition could be a difference maker
in the interior part of the offensive line.
Scruggs only started one games last season,
was featured in several games,
but Brown has been a starter in this league
for the past 45 seasons.
And honestly, I think a B is simply based
on the contracts Cacereo worked out.
I mean, these additions are good additions.
Like, I think of all of the players,
foster more row, more row, excuse me,
maybe the biggest needle mover for this offense.
And a lot of you guys may look at that and say,
how is he a needle mover?
How can you describe him to be a needle mover?
Beat, listen, this is why.
Braden Jordan K,
Braden Jordan was out last year.
K, Stover didn't provide much of anything
in the passing game,
or as a blocker for the tiny and group at tiny and two.
The rest of the tiny is that we're featured last year.
I think for the Houston Texans, no.
I think the number for Houston was around
120 tiny and yards, not from Don Shoes.
So like he's a damn good blocker in line.
He's a guy that you can trust out there
and open field and make a play.
He's also a guy that, again, like I mentioned last week,
the best version, not the best version of himself,
but the best two seasons we've seen from him,
he played a ton of snaps at the slot.
So you're looking at his flexibility to move around
in offense, and I'm looking at how Houston
could absolutely use that compared to this past year
where they didn't have any of that.
So he's so much of an upgrade over the two options
that they've had before, and really three options
because they had Harrison out there
that he moves the needle in that way.
Is he a stud, all-star type of guy?
No, he's not.
Not a household name,
but he's a damn good player,
and a much better player than those other guys.
So I think Murrow is a need of mover.
I think Evan Brown can be viewed
as a need of mover as well
because of his flexibility as one,
but more so because, I mean,
he's just a better player at this point.
And before his arrival,
we were looking at Houston and left guard
and sent him to being Jake Andrews and Jared Patterson.
He's better than both at this point of his career.
So now it's like, okay, no matter where Houston puts him,
puts him, he's going to be an upgrade over those players.
But Cesario, for me, where he really stole the show,
may not be in terms of the names,
but is definitely in terms of very team-friendly deals
to an end-ingroom, to Trent Brown,
who's going to make up to a certain number, right?
So he may not reach that deal,
which is good for Houston.
And if he does, he reached that number,
and that's good for Trent Brown,
but it's not going to break Houston's pocket.
Evan Brown, foster Murrow,
none of the contracts that Houston Texans signed over
this first week is going to hurt their pockets
in any way, shape or form.
But if I were to judge Houston,
based on what's needed,
it will probably sit at a C-plus deal
between Logan Hall, Dominique Robinson, Re-Blankership,
that's nearly $20 million.
Houston still has some holes across this office.
I mean, I'm not satisfied with that wine receiver unit.
Some of you guys are.
Some of you guys are.
I'm not satisfied with that unit.
I still feel like between the 20 million dollars
that were handed out to Logan Hall,
Robinson and Blakeership,
that money, at least half of that money,
could have been used to pair along
with some of the other money that the Houston Texans have
to go after a name with a proven background, right?
But overall, and I said that because, listen,
we look at the center spot,
left guard spot,
Houston still has to replace one of those spots
or upgraded one of those spots.
And the backslash here for Houston,
they worked for 2.8 yards behind the left guard spot
in 2025 per PFF.
I think Brown is going to be better suited
for Houston and Center.
They got to upgrade there.
There are options out there for the Houston Texans.
But again, down the line,
Houston is worried about their cap.
And they want to make sure that they're not going
through financial hula hoops
to make sure that we'll understand
as these days drown in any future extensions will be hindered.
So I understand it.
The contract is what really makes me excited
for the Houston Texans moving forward between 26, 27 and 28.
I guess we have to wait and see what happens in the draft.
But as of right now,
the line, how the line is currently in construction,
I don't think it's enough.
Adding Brown to the mix is definitely a kick
in the right direction.
But it's not enough.
And I don't want you guys to be satisfied with not enough.
So what's next for the Texans?
Down the line, April can't come fast enough.
Let's talk about what's next for Houston
over the next month and a half to get ready
for the 2026 NFL season.

Arby's we have the meat.
And participating Arby's for a limited time.
So before we close out today,
show let's talk about what's next for Houston.
Couple of things to keep in mind.
The updated draft slides for the Houston Texans in 2026.
First round pick at 28, second round pick 38,
second round pick 59, third round pick 69.
You can get a little freaky with that pick.
I don't know, fourth round pick,
106, fifth round picks 141 and 167
and the seventh round pick at 243.
Also, Houston still has a good amount of cap space to work
with.
Looks like the numbers which could, honestly,
the numbers could be flexing soon,
but it looks like Houston still hovering around
over 20 million dollars.
And so what's next for the Houston Texans?
Let's not forget that for Houston,
the Texans signed two players last year
during the month of April.
So, I mean, they're not done.
This is a team that will continue
and they've done this under Nicosirio a lot.
They'll allow the market to kind of fill out itself
for players, right?
Once we see this first week going through
and then the next week and the following weeks,
really about a week out of the draft,
I think we'll see Houston maybe sign a couple of more players.
But the fact is, one of the characteristics
of a Nicosirio team is we're not going to put ourself
in a position, he's not going to put himself
in a position where he's going to overdo anything,
overpay, overdraft, the whole night.
And I think that this first week was really
about filling out holes.
Maybe some of the holes that were filled out,
glass half empty glass half full,
type of thing, because for the offensive line,
I think we've still viewed as a work in progress,
even with the additions of Bringsmith
and having Brown, even with retaining guys
and starters like Trent Brown and Dan Ingram,
like this still is a unit that can be better,
the tight end spot is still in a unit that can be better.
And hey, by the way, David and Junk was still available.
Our guys are going to be available through free agency.
Now, through the draft and after the draft,
I think for a few years, we've seen the Houston Texans
dating back to last year, Nick Chubb was signed extremely late.
So like the Texans are still going to look at players
that are available that are there right now.
Those guys, some of those guys will continue to be available.
That's just the fact of it.
Some of those guys will become available.
Then for Houston, you got to look at,
they got to have money for when players become available
after training camp.
Before the Texans talk about what's next, right?
We talked about how Houston can make sure that
their process of being better offensively,
having a better functional team offensively.
For Houston, if they won the draft offensively,
this could be a totally different team.
And I think this is where our eyes need to be set on.
I've been being on, hey, let's trade
up for offensive weapon.
And for me, it's been King of Sadiq, right?
But Houston is now currently picking at 28,
they're picking at 28, 38 and 59.
Between 28, 38 and 59.
The Texans could very well go in some order.
And offensive line, D tackle, skill position weapon.
You guys may have not watched, but it's up now.
So if you need to go check it out,
the Omar Cooper draft special that I did.
What do you make sense for Houston?
All right, Emmanuel Pregnant,
I talked about him out of Oregon, all right?
Grace Harden, the Oklahoma D tackle, Lee Hunter is a name
that's been linked to Houston a lot.
They'd like them a lot, all right, but in some order.
And even if you want to look at the skill spot and say,
okay, Titan, 28 and 59 could possibly be paired together
to a team to move up for next year, maybe a pick
for next year's draft as well.
That's Houston has a first and second,
one third, one fourth and two sixth round picks next year.
So they don't have a fifth next year,
but maybe he's a player that Kaylee Shlipinski
James Rance, who's new to this front to this to his front.
Charles the coach staff, maybe he's a guy that they believe
that can add what the Texas need to get them over the top
offensively.
But we have to keep in mind, like when we look at what's next,
in preparation of this is going to be
Xavier Hutchison's last year under contract
for the Houston, Texas, who's the same they bring them back
in the future and not, but we know as of right now,
the former late round pick is under contract one more year.
This will be Tankdale's fourth year.
Okay.
They have to start looking at the future.
And for the Houston Texans, what does the future look like
with or without Tankdale?
With or without Xavier Hutchison?
This is Tankdale's last year under contract
as a former third round pick.
He's missed an entire season.
And Tom on the back half of two seasons back to back.
His first year in a second year,
missed time on the back half of those season.
So in addition, like an Omar Cooper,
what I think would be great for Houston,
you can add him to the Y receiver room.
But again, just imagine a tiny unit with Shops,
Cedeek, and Moro.
That would be an office of unit at the Titan spot
that can move bodies, that can make plays down the field,
the immediate part of the field, the scenes of the field,
the outskirts of the field, outside the numbers,
outside the hatches.
So like I think for Houston,
how they set themselves up,
they still could be in play for an office of Lana.
Guard our tackle, by the way.
Like Urshree, you said at left tackle,
I think for Houston, we cannot overlook,
it's out of to my boy, Derek Giles,
because he pointed it out,
as much as I pointed out that Lake Fisher
that's pissed some time on the field this year,
I think he's improved his best game of the year
was when he started at left tackle against the charges,
where he played some good football.
So now I'm looking at the room for left tackle,
Urshree Fisher, right tackle, Smith Brown.
Inside Brown, Andrews,
Patterson is also a student that makes right guard
and left guard, they need some depth,
or they need some guys that are truly playmakers.
And obviously I think for Houston,
the best thing to do would be to draft your left guard,
Patterson is on a contract for another year,
he'd be your dead piece,
they figure out what they can do with the lay ground pick,
they got a seventh round pick,
they got two fifth round picks,
maybe they address another guard spot there,
but what's next for Houston is absolutely getting
some playmakers on this offense for your quarterback.
You guys have been very quick to just say,
move on from C.J. Stroud,
they didn't trade him, they didn't trade Stroud
in the row of Davis Mills.
It's not do that, but it is fair to say
he needs more playmakers around him.
And with the addition of Taekwan Underwood,
of the assistant wire receiver coach,
I cannot help but to think
from a player perspective,
and now from a coaching perspective,
he's going to give an added insight
on what the scheme is asking of
from their young receivers.
And that could very much accelerate
the transition in the league.
So I'm excited to see what he does,
what Higgins and Noel,
and Taekwan they're returning it back.
And I think of all of those receivers,
the option of Rouse, and you know,
knowing when to break in and break off of those routes.
Taekdale, when healthy,
and hopefully he's healthy, 100% healthy,
he's going to be a dangerous and key factor.
But he's going to get prepared for life after Taekdale,
and also life after the executive,
you know, just in both of those players
are under contract one more year.
And he will be a mistake for Houston to expect,
they can bring both of those guys back.
One is going to want to go get more opportunity,
and the other may just feel like,
I feel like he had done enough
as a Houston Texan with his opportunities here.
And that's Xavier Hutchinson now for Taekdale.
If he's 100% healthy and they can have one of those seasons,
bring him back.
And he wants to be back in Houston.
Houston's home form.
They got to get ready,
because they're losing out on Kirk,
Justin Washington, they're going to provide you
nothing in the past in game for real.
Braxton Barrios ain't coming back.
Those are three players right there
that Houston needs to provide.
Talent towards making them for losing those guys.
