It's another mailbag Friday, so let's get to our questions from the listeners.
You are Locked-On Royals.
Your daily Kansas City Royals podcast.
Part of the Locked-On podcast network, your team, every day.
You are tuned into another edition of Locked-On Royals and the Locked-On podcast network,
as always I'm your host, Jack Johnson, and you can follow me on Twitter at JohnnyJUnterscore
15, that is at J-O-H-N-Y-J UNterscore, one five.
We're also now the number one sports podcasting network, so if you're looking for the best
way to listen to us, that can be Spotify, Apple Podcast, Amazon Music, Google Podcast,
Odyssey, and YouTube, just be sure to hit that follow button and subscribe.
For you first time listeners, wondering what to expect from this channel?
We bring you episodes Monday through Friday, 30-minute episodes in length.
Next week I'll be on vacation all week long, but I'm planning to pre-record two episodes
a day over this weekend so that we'll have all five episodes.
They're all going to be interviews, so as I've said throughout the week, if any news breaks,
unfortunately those interviews will not be talking about that because I'll be on vacation,
but fingers crossed that nothing breaks and those interviews will all be up to date.
Before we dive into question number one, I want to tell you that this episode is brought
to you by MLB, the show 26.
MLB, the show, slash locked on and use code locked on to unlock a pack for use in diamond dynasty.
Pre-order now available March 17 on PlayStation 5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch,
rated E for everyone.
A reminder that if I miss anybody's question, nothing personal, clearly the notification
didn't come through, all you'll need to do is just leave your question again below on
this video, and before I hop on a plane on Monday morning, I'll be sure to give you
that personal answer that you were looking for in this episode.
Let's get to question number one from Salvador Perez, Enjoyer.
Do you think Massey has a chance to take over the starting second base job from Jonathan
India?
Not right off the bat, later on in the year, absolutely.
Jonathan, India won't have as long of a leash as he did last year.
If he's not looking good defensively and the numbers aren't there, the royals have a
better defensive second basement, a younger second basement, that might provide them a
better option.
Now, in that same breath, we need to talk about how Michael Massey doesn't have that long
of a leash either.
He's coming off a very poor season, he wasn't very durable.
If those things continue in 2026, then they're going to have to look for another option
outside of India and Michael Massey.
But breaking camp, I don't see Michael Massey getting that start over Jonathan India.
This one is from QT Enjoyer, favorite roller grill item from Quick Trip.
I love Quick Trip just about as much as anybody on my way to work every single day.
I would say four out of the five days of the week, I'm stopping a Quick Trip.
You can't really go wrong there.
The egg rolls have slowly grown on me.
I'd never really looked at them when I would go to get any one of the rollers, the steak
and cheese, of course, has always been my favorite.
I would say then probably just the little corn dogs I would call them.
Those are great too.
And then I would say, you know, I'm just going to stick with the steak and cheese.
The steak and cheese, to me, has always been number one.
And then an honorable mention would be the egg rolls.
They are slowly starting to creep up my list.
Never thought I'd get there either because when I see egg rolls on a roller, I just doesn't
sound that appetizing to me or looked at appetizing.
But Quick Trip can always change my mind with that.
This one's from Johnny baseball's burner.
The two burner accounts who's more influential between them.
I love seeing the March madness tournament for the Royals burners.
I'm very invested, by the way, because I love the content that comes from all the burners.
I think it's hilarious.
And I'm not going to pick somebody that that's something I've promised a lot of people.
I wouldn't do.
I'm not going to pick my favorite burner.
I might vote behind the scenes, but I love all the content that comes from it.
Because I would say as a podcaster, the fan bases out of the most passionate have a bunch
of burners out there.
And the Royals have a ton of them.
That's for sure.
And I always think the content's pretty funny for the most part.
But I can't, I'm sorry.
I can't pick between one of the other when I've been voting.
It's been on those Twitter polls.
So I guess you'll never know.
I got to keep my identity pretty, pretty hidden, pretty invisible when it comes to picking
my favorite burner.
This one is from Jacob.
What's your go-to breakfast?
I know it's not baseball, but I wanted to shake things up a bit.
Depending if I'm working out or not, if I'm working out, I just go with the typical scrambled
eggs in the morning.
If it's my preferred choice, and I'm not dieting whatsoever, oh man, I'd say like waffles
and bacon would be my go-to donuts.
Just a really sugary and bad diet for you.
But if I had my choice and I wasn't caring about anything else, so you're on a trip
or you're, you know, with your buddies, yeah, anybody brings home a box of crispy cream
donuts or Dunkin' donuts or Lamar's here in Kansas City.
That would be my go-to.
And then I'm more of a waffle guy over pancakes.
So those would be my two picks there.
This is coming from Yerke.
We're getting another episode for Wednesday, right?
You know, as much as I would love to make up for not having the episode on Wednesday,
because I always try to do that, with the time that I have left before I go on vacation,
I don't think this week I'm going to be able to get that in because I'm doing two to
three episodes over the next three days.
I'm just not going to have the time to get that extra episode in.
I will say this, if news breaks over the weekend, and even if I've already done the
two episodes, I will try to find a way to squeeze in, even if it's just a 15 minute
episode, something on that breaking news.
So I'm not planning on making up for that episode this week, but as I said to open up the
show throughout next week, you will have all five episodes with five different interview
guests.
This one is coming from GG, so newroyals.tv, will this be on Direct TV still?
If so, I'm assuming on the 600 set of channels here.
I believe it is on Direct TV.
I don't have Direct TV, but I would say that from everything I've read, everything I've
heard, if you had the Valley channel last year, it's no change.
Like, it's just Royals TV now on Valley, replacing Valley.
So my guess would be, yeah, it's the exact same channel that you had last year.
This one's from KCG.
Who do you think will win the MJ Melinda's Royals burner bracket sponsored by Quick Trip?
Okay, so even though this is not me picking my favorite, I'm not going to reveal that
in that Quick Trip bracket, I got to go with one of the top dogs in there in Cole Reagan's
enjoyer because he's a one seed.
Last time I checked it, I know that in all these polls I've seen from either burners or other
baseball accounts that look at the top burners in the community, I always see him pop up.
And I know he's a very loyal listener, so I'm sure he's going to like this, but he's a one seed
in that tournament bracket.
So if I'm going to go with a easy pick here, probably the best dogs to win it, I'll go with
him there.
This next one is coming from Drew.
Could Brandon Jury get a bench spot?
I will say, no, I don't see Brandon Jury getting a bench spot.
It's going to come down to Nick Loft and Josh Rojas or Tyler Tolbert when it's all said and done.
Next one is coming from slugger and big J noises.
Why does no one hold JJ Bacolo accountable?
Yes, he got Marta, but he still refused to fire Alex Zumold after he single-handedly cost us
a postseason run.
If I was to look back at 2025, I don't believe Alex Zumold, now Zumold alone cost him a postseason run.
There were a variety of things that happened really along with the offense struggling and not
really having that consistency.
They were never healthy pitching wise.
They lost Cole Reagan's for a chunk of the season.
They lost Chris Buwitch for a chunk of the season.
They didn't have Seth Lugo for the tail end of the season.
Noah Cameron had to miss a few starts here and there.
They were starting Rich Hill.
They were using openers.
To me, I know there's going to be people out there that are against JJ Bacolo
in being a fan of this team my entire life and seeing the very low lows, the very high highs.
To see an 82 and 80 season, certainly disappointing based on what the circumstances were,
what the expectations were, and you shouldn't be settling for 82 and 80.
I get that vibe from the players.
I get that vibe from JJ Bacolo.
The royals aren't going to fire JJ Bacolo or clean house for going 86 and 76 and getting
to the postseason, winning a postseason series and the next year following it up with 82 and 80.
Like, I'm not even sure if the Red Sox made the post it like this year,
then they go 82 and 80.
They're cleaning house with guys and their organization.
I don't see teams making that knee jerk reaction.
It's going to take a true bottoming out season in 2026 for any sort of front office personnel
to change or anybody on the coaching staff to change.
But if the offense struggles this year,
yeah, they're probably going to have to have some tough discussions and tough decisions.
But now with Conrad Austin and Marcus Tim's there, it adds a different element to the coaching staff.
So I'm viewing that part of the team differently than I did last year.
Let's get to one more before our first break.
Matt's question, do you have any idea what spectrum channel the new royals.tv is supposed to be on?
They said it wouldn't affect cable watchers yet.
The March 5th game is nowhere on any schedule.
Again, I don't have what was you don't have direct TV.
You have looks like spectrum here.
From everything that I've read, everything I've been told.
So I don't know why last night wouldn't have been on TV because I know it was put out there
that it was free to watch for everybody, whether you would pay for the subscription or not.
It should be on the same channel that you had last year.
Like, Bali just took over what Fandall or Bali and then it was Fandall Sports Network.
They just took over the branding of it.
It was still the same channel.
I would need to do some more digging on that.
So I apologize.
I don't have the exact channel number for you because I don't have that.
I have to watch through the app because I have YouTube TV.
But I would imagine as long as they are on cable and they are still on spectrum,
they would be on the exact same channels last year.
So I'm not sure why they wouldn't have been on it last night and they're lost to the rangers.
Okay, let's take our first break at the show.

Going back over to Twitter, let's get to Justin's question.
Which of the following outcomes, if only one possible,
would lead to the highest chance of the Royals making a postseason run?
Bobby MVP, Reagan Sae Young, Carter Jensen Rookie of the Year,
Cags 30 plus home runs.
I'm going to go with either Carter or Cags having that type of outbreak
and if I really had to pick, I'd go with Carter winning Rookie of the Year
because to have that type of ward to be the best Rookie out there.
I mean, even if Cags is hitting 205, 210, he probably has the power
to get really close to 30 home runs or over 30 home runs.
Carter being a Rookie of the Year means everything's well-rounded about his game.
And even if Cole Reagan is not the Sae Young, I expect the numbers to be good.
Same goes for Bobby with Jr. He does win MVP and he still puts together
to eight to nine more season. They're going to have a phenomenal year.
If Carter Jensen can be what some people are expecting him to be,
which would be either Rookie of the Year candidate or the outright Rookie of the Year winner,
comedic gambles over under Jensen Games played in Outfield on a line of 0.5.
I'm taking the under. I don't think there will ever be a need for Carter Jensen to play the
Outfield. There's just really no need to over the course of his career.
I mean, he needs to be the catcher after Salvador Perez.
And unless you were down by a lot and Carter wanted to play the Outfield and wanted to move around,
which I'm not sure he ever would. He'd always want to stay behind the plate.
That would give him one game in the Outfield or one inning in the Outfield.
But I'm going to put the under there. He's never had any experience out there.
Maybe he did in Peewee. I'm pretty sure we did talk to him in one of the spring trains
last couple of years. He said that he'd had experience like at third base before when he was
growing up and and probably at some point in the Outfield. But this guy's a catcher. He needs to
stay at a catcher. Stay at the catcher's spot. And I don't want him risking any injury chasing
down fly balls in the Outfield. This one is coming from Janney. Explain the Royals.tv thing,
especially for those of us with cable and had access to the Royals game. Yeah, I'll just refer
back to my previous couple of answers. It is not going to have any change for the channel.
From what I've heard, from what I've read that where you watched it on Fandall last year,
it's just going to be there again. If you're like me who watched on the app,
you're going to have to pay for the subscription and go through that route.
This one's from Hall of Fame, Sally. Jack, you get 100 bats against Cole Riggins. Are you putting a
ball in play? So I have always loved this question. I feel very strongly on this question.
I, the highest level I ever played baseball is high school. Never got to college.
Don't really believe I had much of a chance to play in college either. I was more basketball
than baseball, funny enough. I respect the heck out of what big league pitchers are in the same
way that in basketball, sometimes I would work out and practice with guys that played overseas,
and though they weren't in the NBA, they were incredibly dominant. I could never score on them.
I could never stop them from scoring. Baseball, my opinion, is even harder if you're not prepared
for that. Right now, after not playing baseball and seeing even 85 to 90 miles an hour, I mean,
the hardest I ever saw was 93, 94. So to catch up to 97, 98 with command,
then I got to worry about his change up and his slider and cutter. I'll be honest with you. I'd
put it at zero. I don't think I would get a single well-struck ball in play. I might be able to
foul tip a few of them, but I don't think of myself that highly when it comes to hitting a guy who
can pump 96 to 98 from the left side. I know there's some people including my buddies that would
think in a big league game they could put a ball in play. I'm not going that far. My brother is a
high school coach in San Francisco and there's a machine that you can run up to 100 miles an hour
and I tried to hit off of it and not one time that I square up a ball and it was in the exact same
spot every single time. Used a wood bat, used an aluminum bat. No, wasn't even close to catching up
to it. So I would give myself a zero percent chance of actually putting a ball in play. If I did,
it would be out of pure luck. This one's from Luke. Is there any news on Ace of AC? Not to my knowledge.
When we got this question last week, I would say that I spent 15 to 20 minutes asking around,
looking at articles, nothing really came up about it. I don't believe that he's with the
royals right now. I don't believe he's pitching anywhere. It's pretty radio silent. Like I said,
last week, I just hope all is well with him. I hope that he's finding peace with not really having
that chance to break through with the royals due to injuries and wish him nothing but the best.
But to my knowledge, I do not think that he is with the royals organization. I'm hoping I'm wrong,
though, because I would still love to see a bounce back year. I would love to see this
reclamation project four years after he last pitched it in a professional game.
This one's coming from definitely not Bobby. Jack, have you observed how closely royals fans are
coming together on certain platforms recently? Your thoughts on that. So I'm assuming this is about
the burner, the burner bracket out there. I love it. I absolutely love it. I think that any time
you can grow a fan base, yes, it's podcasters, yes, it's beat reporters, it's broadcasters.
But when you have die hard fans too that are constantly talking about the game posting videos
about the royals, it only grows the outreach. And I can say that when I did start this podcast or
take over this podcast two and a half years ago, wasn't as large as it is now. So it warms my heart
to see this many people care this much about royals baseball. So if you want my thoughts on it,
I absolutely love it. I can't get enough of it. I think it's hilarious. I think it's funny. A lot
of the content on there is top tier. Not all of it. Not all of it. I can't condone everything that I
see on there. But I would say that anytime when I'm scrolling through Twitter and I see a lot of it,
hey, I want royals content on my timeline. And I know the burners provide a lot of that throughout
the day. This one's from Leo. Are you concerned about India's early spring struggles?
Not overly concerned. Last year, he had really well in spring training and it didn't translate.
And he had told me last time I was down and surprised that he was coming off of surgery. I believe
that off season. So he was just kind of slowly working his way back, but yet the numbers were good.
Spring training makes no sense when it comes to numbers. They might correlate. They might not correlate.
Last night, he had a good start to the game, had a ground rule double to begin the game, then walked
in his second at bat. I'm going to get a pretty good gauge on Jonathan India for the first month.
Just how much his swing has changed, how much defense is coming in has helped him. And I'll go
from there. But as of right now, no, I'm not overly concerned that his spring training performance
is going to impact what he did in the regular season. Get through these next couple of weeks healthy
and we're going to go from there. Okay, let's take our final break of the show. When we come back,
still a lot of questions get to next unlocked on royals.
This week's MLB top 100 highlight is brought to you by MLB the show 26, the latest from the
beloved video game franchise. Each week we're highlighting the stars of MLB's top 100 player list.
The elite names you'll be controlling, building around and going head to head with MLB the show.
And I'm going to go with Cole Reagan's in the top 100. He didn't look good last night, but I will
tell you this that in the game, he's very smooth to play with. The mechanics are good. It's easy to
time up everything. And he's been the best pitcher on the royals over the last couple of years.
And this year he should be pretty dang good again. So if you're going to do a franchise with the
royals or you're doing diamond dynasty with our code, Cole Reagan's who also is in the top 100
is a good pitcher to build around. So don't completely count him out because of what he did last night
in his spring training start, which wasn't very good at all. Hey, a video game is still a video game.
The numbers are there. And I'm sure they will be for him in MLB the show 26.
We are wrapping up this mailbag Friday edition of Lockdown Royals and the Lockdown podcast network. I'm
your host, Jack Johnson. And you can find me on Twitter at Johnny J underscore 15. Next question is
going to be coming from J Hawks Royals Steelers country. Who at this point would be your pick for
the final bench spot? I'm going with Josh Rojas over Nick Lofton. Nothing I saw last night really
changed that. Nothing I saw this week really changed that his numbers have been about the same
as Nick Lofton, but I also can't say that's going to dictate everything. I'm going over longevity
at the big league level. The type of number she's put up before where is Nick Lofton. He's never
really done it before the big league level. So I'm going to go with experience over the unknown
for a guy like Nick Lofton. This one's from Isaac. If all areas of this team are performing at an
acceptable rate or accept or better rate, how deep of a run do you think they'll make? I can see
them as of right now getting to the ALDS. They are going to need to make some noise at the trade
deadline for me to get them to the ALCS or the World Series. And it's going to have to be a pretty
noisy one unless just everybody is just overachieving, which I know that is a part of your question here.
I don't see everybody overachieving. You're going to have to expect some regression, but even with
that regression mixed in with the guys that are overperforming, trade deadline acquisitions can
push them over the top when it comes to being a true contender in the American league.
This one's from Travis. Why can't we draft and develop a 2020 guy for centerfield? Last guy
was Beltron. That's a big conundrum. That's for sure. I always thought that the Royals would be
able at some point to get a centerfielder for the future. They have in the last couple of years.
Lorenzo came was their last true great centerfielder. Maybe a guy like Gamble can be their centerfielder
the future. I know he's a centerfielder second base first round pick from last year. He would be
my pick of being a 2020 guy down the road. Ronnie's question, say Vinny plays good for the next two
seasons. Can you run through some scenarios where Vinny would be dealt before his two-year contract
ends like one bad royal seasons average season like last year? Would it take one and a half seasons
for it to happen if at all? I don't see it ever happening to be honest with you. He'll either
play through this contract and sign elsewhere or he would for whatever reason be let go because
the numbers were that bad but I don't see that happening. There's just no scenario where I could
see the Royals trading Vinny pass Quintino regardless of the numbers. Dev's question using current
zip projections who are some teams that will be selling at the deadline that have players we
could realistically look at given were in the hunt for the postseason. I'd say the angels would be a
team. I would say the Rockies would be a team because of Brent and Doyle. I would say the
Nationals would be a team because of their interest in CJ Abrams in the offseason. I'll go with
those three teams for now with the angels it'd be a guy like Joe Adele if they were to go after
somebody that could really impact their lineup. Caleb's question, Hey Jack loved the show. Insert
as always thanks for the kind words. Yes, I was planning on doing that. What do you think of Sally's
Hall of Fame case? I recently wrote about it for my blog but wanted to know your thoughts. I think
you should be in even if not on first ballot. He's going to have to have two or three more really
good seasons for me to to put him in the Hall of Fame. I know he's a Royals Hall of Fame or
no doubt about it. I just think it will take probably closer to two more season. If he has two more
solid seasons, then yeah, he's absolutely going to be a shoe in for the Hall of Fame. But I know
that my opinion might be a little bit biased because he does play for the Royals. Alex's question,
what do you think would make this season acceptable and what would make it a failure? Acceptable
making the postseason missing would be a failure. That's where I'm at with this team. They got to
make it for it to be a success. A really big success. They got to get to the ALCS. But anything
short of the postseason would be a failure this year in my opinion. Next one is coming from Chipper.
Since MLB is now in charge of the TV this year, do they have any say or pull and who gets hired
and who is on TV? Don't know if Joel didn't want to do on field reporting, but this point he is
only doing pre and post, hoping the best with Bridget. Yeah, and Bridget's going to do a phenomenal
job. I talked with her down and spring trading and she's absolutely suited to have a job like that.
For Joel, I'm not sure if he just was done doing that and wanted to stick to pre and post, but
I'm not sure MLB has any say in who they should be hiring and who should be moved where I think
that was a Royals decision and whether it be a Joel decision or not, I think it's going to better
the broadcast moving forward. This one's from Travis. Tell me about Annabelle Gomez. Yeah, really
good young prospect that I think still needs to fill out a little bit more. The bats going to need
to really mature over the next couple of levels, but the upside is there. Absolutely. He would be one
of the position players. I'm really focusing in on going in the 2026. Still a ways away, but the ceiling
is through the roof for this guy. RB Karr's question could burger pitch well enough to spring to
overtake Cameron in the rotation. I don't think so. I believe Noah Cameron's locked into the rotation
and that's not going to change anytime soon. Let's get over to YouTube here to wrap up the show.
This one's coming from Stormy. Hey, Jack was curious on who you think the top two options are
for the lead-off spot in the lineup. I'm going to go with Michael Garcia and Isaac Collins.
Beave's question. Yes, I get this as a Royals podcast and a diehard KC fam, but I'm curious
outside of the Royals prospects who are you eager to watch. This is just a cross baseball.
I mean, it's always going to be guys like Paul Skins, Tarrick Scoobal,
Shoei Otani. Some guys that I'm very interested in seeing. Connor Griffin, once he gets up with the
pirates, I can't wait to follow that storyline. I would say I'm really curious if a guy like
Ellie Dale and Cruz can take the next lead to. Lastly, I would say just from a fun aspect. I
love watching Fernando Tatee's Jr. Play. Those are a couple of names that I love watching.
If you're meeting prospects, Connor Griffin, number one, Kevin McGonicle, number two,
Weatherhold, number three, and I'll stop there. I'll say those are my top three guys going into
the season to watch from other teams. John's question, who is truly the best prospect in the
organization? I'm going to go with... I'm going to go with David Shields for now. I think that he
has a really good chance of being a frontline guy. His numbers were incredible last year. I expect
it to be good this year. And if you listen to me long enough, you would know that there's nobody
I'm higher on in the organization than David Shields. Next one is coming. I believe we just have
two more. I know I'm stalling a little bit more here. This one's from overhead storage. What are
the odds of John Rave making the opening day roster? Less than 10% at this point. I'm just not sure
the fit is truly there. My buddy Blake's question, Jack, you're the man. What made you so
infatuated baseball as a kid, slash young adult, and what makes this world's team under this
ownership different than previous regimes? The ownership question, I think they're just more
willing to be aggressive, whether it be adding within the lines, adding between the margins or
going big. They're more transactional. They're more aggressive. And JJ Bacol and John Sherman
are absolutely locked step of what they want to do. How I got into baseball played it for a really
long time. And I just always went to the games with my dad and brother growing up. And that's
what I gravitated toward. I just every time I watched it, I got more of an investment to it than
any other sport. And that hasn't changed all these years later. I think the last one here,
or if I have anymore. Okay, I think that is all of our questions here on YouTube. So that's
going to do it for another edition of Lockdown Royals and the Lockdown podcast network. I'm your
host, Jack Johnson. If I missed anybody's question, nothing personal just respond below to this YouTube
video. It's clear I did not get the notification whether it be on Twitter or on YouTube. But I'll
have it answered before I get on a plane Monday morning. So next week, you can expect five
different interviews with five different guests. I'll have them all lined up to post around 9 a.m.
9 a.m. each and every day. But hope you enjoyed the episode. We'll talk to you a few weeks down
the line, Kansas City.
