He had stayed at his sister’s house plenty of times without ever thinking twice about it. The basement wasn’t exactly comfortable, but it was usable—and the first night there was completely normal.
The second night was different.
As soon as he tried to settle in, something felt off. Then the mattress dipped beside his legs, not subtly, but in a way that felt unmistakably real—like someone had just sat down next to him. When he moved, it reacted.
That’s when he knew it wasn’t in his head.
What he saw moments later, just before running upstairs, was enough to make him never spend another night in that house again. What made it worse… his sister didn’t seem surprised when he told her.

I'm Carol Hughes and Kathy Gordon is here today.
I am.
Hey, you know, the other day, we did an episode.
And somebody was talking about the low hum.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And it was and there and this is kind of a phenomenon that people are talking about that they
just hear this low hum and they're we kind of talked about some of the different theories
about it that some people, you know, it might be the hearing, your own hearing is having
troubles.
It might be, you know, several many different things.
Some people think it's the earth itself.
And once he brought that up in the story, you know, I got to thinking about that I'm hearing
a low hum too and it usually happens in the evening when I notice it.
I don't really notice it during the day, not so much late at night, but more kind of
like between say six and 10, I notice it.
And it's I think and it's kind of a low, almost a I don't want to say a rumble either,
but I keep thinking somebody is parked a semi outside somewhere and I go outside and
I can't hear it at all and I look around, but I can hear it in my house.
I haven't figured it out yet.
So I think we, we've got a, I've got a mystery that I'm working on.
Do you hear it just at night or during the day?
I do not hear it during the day, but I will be, I'll be paying more attention.
I'll be I'll be paying more attention.
I don't have an air conditioner or heater.
I just have a little one of those little window unit things that hangs on the wall.
I forget that you have different weather than we have.
It's all different here.
I'm like heating and air conditioning.
What you have to have that we don't even have such things here, but I just have a little
wall unit that's very quiet, but I'm kind of like watching.
I'm with you.
Like I'm going out, like I went outside and thought maybe it's this little outdoor unit
here, but I don't hear anything.
And I come back in and then I kind of hear it rumbling again.
I don't know.
So I have a mystery, keep, I'll keep you all posted as I keep chalking down, you know,
going through and checking off possibilities to get to it, but I do think there's something
to this earth thing or there is some sort of weird hum that people hear.
And they can't put their finger on it.
And I think a lot of times people say, well, it's my HVAC system or something.
But is it always yeah, or are we just chalking it up to that?
I do have like a fan or something that you leave on at night that might be sitting weird
and it's creating some kind of sound like that.
The answer is no.
Okay.
I do not.
And it's completely when I, like I said, after I go to bed, I really don't hear it.
And in the middle and late at night, it's just so, it's just so quiet.
It's crazy.
If like where I live is so out of the way for anybody to come that if a car drives by,
I wake up and I'm like, whoa, what's that?
Oh, it's a car, you know, because it's nobody comes down here.
It's just very quiet.
I'm kind of right across the street from a wetlands preserve area.
Sounds so beautiful.
It really is beautiful people, but you can't, like you can't go that way.
And so people don't drive down here because you can't go into the wetlands.
But it's so strange, I don't, I, I, but I, and I didn't really think that much about
it till we had that discussion the other day.
And then the more I thought about it, I thought that, you know, that is weird because I've been
having that.
And I've been trying to figure out where it comes from because it, like I said, almost
exactly.
If a semi truck was parked in front of your house and it was on, and it was just that kind
of low rumble thing, you think it's electrical lines outside your house?
I don't know.
I don't, I don't think so, but I don't know.
So anyway, keep us posted, I'll keep you posted as I go through it.
House has been so mysteriously strange since you moved in.
It has been, but I do like it here.
I have to say I like it, but it, but it is quirky.
It has had several things.
It's quirky.
Well, let's talk about this little odd house that has a weird basement.
It says I've had a few weird things happen over the years.
And this happened when I was in my early 20s.
My sister had a house at the time and they would have people over regularly on weekends
just hanging out, having a few drinks, sitting outside that kind of thing.
I'd stay there a bunch of times, never really thought much of it.
The downstairs is where this happened.
It wasn't a finished space, more like one of those basements that's usable, but not
really meant to be lived in kind of open, a little damp, not great lighting.
This one of those places where you don't spend time unless you have to, we both figured
out.
Yeah, we did it in that way before, because then anything down there smells musty, but you
don't smell it because you're down there, and then you bring it upstairs, it's like,
oh, you're closing.
Yeah, let's see.
One weekend, I was over there with a few people hanging out late.
One was to stay a couple days, so I wasn't going anywhere that night.
The first night was completely normal.
I slept fine, nothing weird, no bad feeling, nothing at all.
The second night was when this happened, but then it was just me there with them.
They had gone to bed pretty early.
The house was quiet.
I went back down to the same spot I slept in the night before.
I remember laying there for a minute with my hands behind my head.
The room wasn't completely dark.
There was a little bit of light coming in from a small window.
As soon as I closed my eyes, I got this feeling that something wasn't right.
It's hard to explain, but it hit me all at once, the kind of feeling in your chest and
up the back of your neck, where your body reacts.
It made me open my eyes right away.
I looked around, everything looked the same, nothing out of place, nothing moving, no
sound.
I lay there for a second, telling myself it was nothing and trying to relax again.
I closed my eyes, and right after I did that, I felt the edge of the bed move next to
my legs.
Not a small shift or anything subtle.
It felt exactly like when someone sits down on the edge of a bed.
That specific kind of way where the mattress dips and you can feel it pull.
I didn't move.
I was trying to convince myself I had imagined it, but at the same time I knew I hadn't.
It was a very specific feeling.
After a second, I opened my eyes and looked.
The edge of the bed was pushed down, not a lot, but enough you could clearly see it.
My legs were crossed at the time.
After a few seconds, I slowly uncrossed them without really thinking about it as soon as
I moved the bed went back up.
And that's when it really hit me that something wasn't right.
Before that, I was still trying to explain it, but that didn't make sense.
It reacted when I moved.
I set there for a second, trying to figure out what to do.
I remember thinking about how I was going to leave, like what path I would take to get
to the stairs and how fast I could get there.
After a few seconds, I just got up and went forward.
I made it to the bottom of the stairs and stopped.
And I don't know why I stopped.
I think part of me still wanted to believe it was nothing.
And I didn't want to go upstairs to try to explain it.
I turned around and I saw a figure.
It was more like part of one, just the outline of a shoulder and part of a head near the
far side of the room, dark but not completely solid, just enough shape that it didn't match
anything else down there.
I didn't stand there long enough to really look at it as soon as I realized what I was
seeing.
I turned back around and went up the stairs as fast as I could.
I went straight into the living room, turned on the lights, sat there.
I didn't sleep at all.
I stayed there watching the stairs until it started getting light out.
When my sister's husband got up for work, he could tell something was off right away.
I told him I didn't sleep and that something happened downstairs, but I didn't really
get into it right then.
After he left, I told my sister everything.
What got me was she didn't seem surprised.
She wasn't laughing it off, reacting like I imagined it, but she also didn't react
like it was the first time she'd heard something like that.
She kind of hesitated and then said they'd had things happen in the house too, not the
same thing exactly, but enough that they didn't love being there at night.
I remember asking her why she never said anything before and she just shrugged it off like
it wasn't a big deal.
I left not long after that and I never stayed there again.
I'd still go over during the day once in a while, but I was done being in that house
at night.
They didn't live there too much longer after that.
I don't remember exactly how long, but it wasn't years.
I never asked for details on why they left and they never offered much more about what
they had experienced.
I've had other weird things happen since then, but nothing like that.
And I've definitely never had anything where something actually felt like it was right
there next to me.
Anyway, that's the one story I always share when we talk about paranormal stories.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
You know, I think I've never really had where it feels like someone sits down on the
bed.
Definitely more than once felt like a cat jumped up on the bed, but not the sitting on
the bed.
And that is a specific feeling.
And I've had people tell me they felt like somebody was getting into the bed with them.
Would that find out even more?
That's pretty awful, but I have not had that happen.
I have had something touch me more than once, but I have not felt anybody sit on the bed.
And sitting on the bed is very specific.
You know when somebody sits down on a bed.
There's a, you know, there's a counterweight to what happens.
And so if somebody sits over here, it affects what happens on your side of the bed and so
forth and so on.
So you know if somebody did, if somebody sat down there.
One of the things in this story that I could so relate to was kind of trying to plan
your escape.
You're laying in bed thinking, okay, it's about 10 steps over there.
Do I jump up?
Do I go slow?
What do you, you know, when you're thinking about how you're going to get past this?
And around it.
I was impressed that he did.
I'm assuming he, I don't know, could be a she, so I'm, but I'm saying it's a he.
I'm, I am impressed that he got up and did it.
That would have taken all the nerve you had.
Well, what, what, what, what are your options here?
Stay with it or just try to get out, right?
It's basically those two, right?
I'm going to run as fast as I can try to get there or I'm going to stay here.
And they were scared enough that they're like, I'm getting out.
Yeah.
I've got to get past this thing.
And then go upstairs, it's just like, I just, I'm just staying here.
I can't sleep.
I'm, I'm so scared of whatever this was and that, but stopped and turned around and
saw something, kind of a partial figure.
Oh, I don't know.
That sounds intimidating, but I am telling you, I mean, that's a sister.
I think you could sit down and have a conversation with your sister.
Well, it sounds like they did, but now because you, I get it when you're still in the
house, maybe you don't want to talk about it because you think you might stir some shit
up, you know?
Yeah.
And you might just go, yeah.
But now they've moved.
Why not circle back and be like, never happened.
Like what happened to you?
Did anything like that happen to you?
You're safe now, you know, I get why you don't talk about it.
No, I think that's a good idea.
I think I would do that because she definitely acknowledged, yeah, weird things have happened
here.
Like what?
Yeah.
You're sitting on your bed at night because that's like, it could go two ways.
That could be kind of a maternal or paternal spirit that like sits on your bed to talk to
you before you fall asleep or it could be someone intimidating you, trying to scare you.
It could have been a demon.
It could have been.
So I would have a conversation with the sister.
That is a really scary story though.
Let's go to the story.
You know, one time I was hanging out with my friends and we decided that we wanted
to go to do the old urban legend that was around in North Carolina, supposedly.
There was a plantation where a guy lived beside an all white Christmas Eve, I believe.
He supposedly killed his whole family and then killed himself.
Well, after doing that, they demolished his house after a few years or so and then they
supposedly put the floorboards of his house up underneath the bridge that led to his
house.
Me and my friends decided to go down to the bridge and supposedly the myth of the bridge
is that you pull onto the bridge and you're supposed to go into the middle of it and
for some odd reason your car, you turn your car off and for some odd reason, you try
and turn the ignition back on and it wouldn't turn on at all.
Well, we go down there and we get on the bridge and we sit directly in the middle of it.
Well, there's pretty much probably 50 yards front to back between both sides of the bridge
which are going to start the car up while we're in the middle of it.
The ignition won't turn on, the engine won't turn over or anything.
So at this point, we're freaked out like crazy, we don't know what's going on.
I was just saying get out of the car and go push it off the bridge and everybody
is scared and not wanting to move anywhere.
Well, a few of us can get out of the car and start pushing the car off the bridge and
once we get the car off the bridge, we get back in and we try and start it up.
Well, we get it started up and everything and we wonder why would the bridge not allow
the car to start up but as soon as we get off the bridge, it does.
We go up the road a little ways to where the house was, tour down and the plantation
is and all of a sudden we pull into the driveway and it, we hear a sound like we just hit
something.
Well, one of the driver gets out of the car, goes up to the front of the bumper and looks
at it and he's looking to see if there's any animal or any damage or anything and there's
nothing on the front of the bumper at all.
All of a sudden everybody, I start hearing in the car, old classical carnival music playing
in the background.
I mean, we're in the middle of the woods, I mean, there's nothing around us, old country
town and everything.
I mean, there's no way to be playing in the woods from some house and we would be here
in that.
Well, at that point, everybody else, I tell them and ask them if they hear the music
well.
A few other people hear the music and a few people don't hear the music.
We get back in the car and just hop out of there and get back to our house and after
that night, we probably, I think we didn't even sleep for two days straight, but I appreciate
it.
You know what I mean?
See, that to me is so interesting because if I was to read that story myself, I would
be like, yeah, this is someone sharing some folklore story and acting like it really happened
to them.
You know what I mean?
Uh-huh.
But then he shares it and I really believe him like, I don't even know if I would read
that story on the program just because I think I would call, you know, this could be just
BS or something.
Right.
But then because it's that same story that happens all across a country, different bridges.
And if you park right here and you do this, and then like the whole thing with hearing
like the kind of weird circusy kind of music, that was strange.
That was a twist I did not see coming.
You know, I have questions.
Is there some buddy driving an ice cream truck or something?
You know, I mean, I, I'm guessing it was late at night and that's probably not a possibility.
But there could be weird carnival music coming from some vehicle somewhere.
And the odds of that happening right then, yeah, is a little strange to just, yeah, there's
nothing creepier than carnival music.
Is there, well, not when your car is stuck on a bridge, yeah, yeah, I'm just thinking
back story about as creepy as it can get because there's the boards of the house underneath
the bridge.
And if you do this and everything they did happened.
And then that starts, you know, even in the middle of the day when the ice cream truck
goes around the neighborhood and it's playing this weird carnival music, that's creepy.
Well, it's creepy that you let your kids go up and be like, run after that creepy music.
They will stop and sell you ice cream.
Right.
I, I just think it is so, you know, as kids, we would be like, oh, the ice cream truck
or whatever and we'd run out and get something.
Now it's like, oh, that's just weird.
Well, then they're in white vans and it's like, I don't know that I'd feel real comfortable
having my kid run out there to get ice cream from the guy in the white van.
No, it's, I just don't think so.
It's just real creepy.
So, you know, you're right in listening to him tell the story, I agree, you know,
when you started out, I thought, well, this is, and he said it was one of those urban
myth-type stories that he goes, even around us, this was kind of a legend thing.
But it apparently did happen.
Now, could you have a friend that's acting like the car won't start and it's just he's pulling this?
I don't think so because I think, you know, when a car's being, well, it's different
if it's going won't, that's hard to fake that.
Yeah, like you could maybe like, oh, look, I'm turning the ignition
and you're really not.
You're just putting it by his voice.
He sounds like a practical sort of guy that probably knows about machines and engines and stuff.
You know, I mean, he really does sound like that kind of guy that's like, oh, yeah,
you know, I can fix that or whatever.
So I, I just feel like he would know if someone was trying to prank him.
It was just strange.
So I don't know, I just find that so weird whenever you hear one of those stories
and then people are like, yeah, it really happened.
That's what he sounded like.
It really did sound like it really happened.
So I have a hard time like arguing with him on that because that sounded a hundred percent legit.
And if it wasn't, that guy really should go into voice acting because he's very good at it.
Yes, he is.
So yeah, well, if you have a real ghost story, share it with us.
