About this episode
Louie and Russ come together to debate what this year's song of the summer was. Was it Ella Langley's chart topper "Choosin' Texas"? What about Taylor Swift's latest mega-single, "I Knew It, I Knew You" or Ariana Grande's "Hate That I Made You Love Me"? Maybe Olivia Rodrigo? Drake?! Or something not even on the top of the charts, like Slayyyter or Madonna. They discuss the summer in pop and then reveal the winners of the 2026 Pop Pantheon Song of the Summer Draft.

This past week, Russ and I celebrated 10 years of Britney Spears' glory by going track by track on her last released album. It was really interesting. I actually listened to it yesterday. We recorded it a while ago. I thought it was a great conversation and I think you will too. Also, if you are in New York, gorgeous gorgeous is this Friday night at the Sultan Room in Bushwick. We're going to be celebrating three years of the rise and fall of a Midwest princess plus
playing all your favorite pop girlies all night and you can grab tickets for that in the show notes of this episode or by going to gorgeous gorgeous party on Instagram. Okay, I'm here with Russ. Russ the leaves are turning brown and falling off the trees. There's a light brisk feeling in the air. Some people are starting to carve their pumpkins, break out their sweaters. So that means it's time for us to wrap up the summer season, a yes, it sure is and I have a Pinterest board with all of my fall outfit inspiration on it. I am ready to go with the changing of the seasons, but it has been a summer. I have had one of the best summers of my life. I've been swimming almost every day. I traditionally a person who hates the summer has really embraced it and it has made things all the better. You are just back from vacation as well where you we should say put some version of final
touches on your book. Congratulations. Thank you so much. I'm actually going to be submitting that at some point today. I think. Please forgive my general groginess. I'm also recovering from a pretty wicked bout of food poisoning that actually delayed this recording by the day. So I'm I'm powering through. But yeah, I don't know if this was the best summer of my life. It was definitely a really stressful summer, but it was an expansive experience. And actually, I'm really a fall girl at heart. It is my favorite season. I'm with you in the sense that like historically, although I'm hearing that you are maybe shifting this. But historically, I'm not one of those people that lives for summer. I think summer has its things to recommend. I mostly like everybody else's vibe during the summer. Like I enjoy people's happiness and like the sort of like collective joy of the summer. But I don't love being hot and I never have. So for me, fall is everything. I think it's perfect temperature wise.
I think there's like a feeling of rejuvenation of starting again. I just like love that like during the day, sometimes you can wear sweatshirt or you can wear a t-shirt and then at night, it's kind of chilly. Beautiful. I think the sun should set around 645 or 7. I think that's kind of like when it should set 830 is like a crazy time for the sun to set at night. You know what I mean? I also don't want to set it at 430. This is the season I live for. A brisk afternoon walk. I know there's something with the back to schoolness of the whole thing. So anyway, also this fall is going to be particularly special for me because it's going to be the first time in two years and I don't have to be writing my book. So I'm really looking forward to that too. I would like to say pophampiyampaw.com. There is a book tab. Louis has sent out a series of updates, but in general, if you go there, you will get updates about the book. If you are interested in it, which you should be. I have got a little bit of a sneak peek and I am so excited to read it from cover to cover.
You will be too. If you like this show, you will absolutely love the book. Make sure that you are signed up for it. It's going to be coming out next year. I have been what Louis was away doing a couple of things on my list of two do. And so if you go to pophampiyampaw.com, you will also find a brand new tab that says A-Sides and there is an alphabetical list of every A-Side that we have ever done. And Louis posts his clues. People are always, always, always guessing episodes that we have already done and Louis sent them links. And it's a whole thing. And I said, what if there was a place where we could go because Google searches kind of useless. It's really hard to scroll all the way back. We've been a show for a very long time now. So if there is an artist that you love and you're wondering, have we ever done an episode on the go to pophampiyampaw.com, dig into the archives, send it to a friend to binge. And yeah, that was one of my summertime activities. Yeah, that was great. Yeah, and also I'm going to do an update for the book newsletter people soon.
And I think there's going to be a lot of announcements in the near future about release dates and all of that. Because of Plus, we're going to be planning a lot of fun stuff related to the book for the podcast and extension of the podcast, all this kind of stuff. So I'm really excited to be getting into that phase of it and not in the phase of writing it, which is less fun than this is going to be, I think. So we are gathered here to talk about what the song of the summer was, whether there was a song of the summer and to follow up on the bets that we made for the pophampiy on 2026 song of the summer draft, which for the first time ever listeners of this show have participated in. So we will find out towards the end of this episode how Louis and I did against each other and also how Louis and I did against the listeners of this show who are just as plugged into pop music as we are. So song of the summer, Lou, every single year we have this debate, is this a thing anymore?
What have we learned from this summer? How are you feeling about the existential and eternal question of does a song of the summer still exist within a non-monoculture? Yeah, I mean, my first reaction is that like I feel just more of the same in the sense that like I think we all have our songs of the summer and I think our like friend groups have our songs of the summer and our little world, there are songs of the summer. But I looking at this chart, this Billboard Top 20 song of the summer's chart, it just like means almost nothing to me personally and I think that's both because of the monocultural conversation and also because these songs stay on these charts for so long that it just doesn't feel like there's this representative snapshot of like what felt like this summer. So like we're going to talk about what the crowning song of the summer was this summer, like this is a song that's been floating around now for a really, really long time.
It's been number one for a really long time, even beyond when the summer first started. So when I see that, I've always kind of rallied against this Billboard chart, no offense to our friends at Billboard, but I just don't think this is the right way to measure this, to be honest with you. And I think that's more true than ever. A song of the summer should also feel like it reminds you of a time or reminds you of that specific moment. I think to the extent that like we have songs that almost never depart the hot 100 top 10 anymore, the turnover so, so slight. And you know, again, as you were getting at this kind of monocultural thing, like none of these were my song of summer or even close. And I don't remember the last time that like the chart, maybe espresso is like the one thing that I can think of where like the chart and my particular experience of music during the summer had any sort of alignment. But when I look at this chart, I listen to some of these songs, you know, I like the Taylor Swift song, I like the Ariana Grande song fine. But like those were not my songs of summer, not even close in ubiquity or taste. Well, let's talk about that before we dig into exactly what is on the chart.
Let's talk about our personal songs of the summer. What did you listen to this summer? And maybe also was there a song of the summer at Gorgeous Gorgeous? Well, for me, Confessions 2 was like the entire vibe of the summer. And I know our listeners agree, like, talk about dissolving monoculture. It was like in my and your corner of the world, this album was just like everything everybody was talking about. And then you look one tiptoe outside of it and like nobody cared. It didn't do that great commercially. None of these songs really hit anybody. In fact, sometimes I'd even play some of them at Gorgeous Gorgeous and half the room would be going up, half the room didn't quite know what they were. So that's a good example of it for me. I think the most exciting thing, and again, this is like a little two sides of my mouth, are that like two songs that feel like they were songs of summer in different ways in
my world, our older songs, one of which was Midnight Sun by Zarlarsson, which wasn't my particular song of summer because it was my song of summer kind of last summer. But watching that song become like a wedding song, you know what I mean? That's always my judge who like hasn't broken through was crazy. And it definitely like became the biggest moments Zarlarsson has ever had. And like is to me what this Billboard chart doesn't capture, it is a song about summer. It is a song about like the experience of living in summer. I think that's why some of this like chart stuff is just like not a really good gauge of what a song of summer feels like to me. Like Midnight Sun is a great song of summer because it's a great song. It was big this summer and because it's a song that captures the spirit of summer, you know, of a never ending day of the sort of like a femoral sexiness and romance of the
season, the colors, etc. Dancing. So that's one that comes to mind. And then of course, and I know everyone's going to fucking laugh at me, but like sue me by Audrey Holbert. Like, I mean, another song that's been around for a while, but like is definitely having a big breakthrough moment and like seeing that song begin to break through to Normie's and like seeing her performing that song kind of reminds me a little bit of like when again, Chapel Rhone had her big breakthrough moment during all these festivals a couple years ago. So like those are two songs that again, like I've been aware of and don't like necessarily feel like this summer for me personally, but like feel like songs of summer in my world, I guess, or like that I would be excited about. But really, it's been confessions to summer for me. There's a couple others that come to mind like the Dolly Babe song Pink Blush, which is like this big meme that everybody's like obsessed with. That's like a really fun song that I like as well. Melatonin by Tonache also seems like a kind of like big thing that Gays are obsessed with
and that is a really cool song. So like there's a couple others that have like been around in my orbit this summer. Obviously, all the Olivia Rod Rico songs are pretty big for me. I'm really into that album. But yeah, that's been like what's defined my summer as I've observed it. What about you? I mean, I think kind of like everybody now, I'm having my own summer disconnected from the world outside of my immediate community in silo, which is, you know, and altogether existential problem with the current political moment that we are in. But I went and actually fact checked myself to see what I have been listening to on my Spotify and almost everything as per usual is stuff I've listened to for this show. But there is a couple of tracks, the two that were in my top 10 that aren't that are Rebby Wolf's Cinderella off of her last album, which is sort of a comfort album that I'm often playing in the background. And then my number one song of this summer is Insane and Troubling.
It is Shoot to Kill, Comma Kill Your Darlings, which is a underscores song from her 2023 album Wall Socket about how the military industrial complex plays on poor kids, but also how it is kind of exhilarating to shoot again. Oh my God. There's always going to be a fire. Let's fly. Well, honestly, underscores is a good example of something that feels really relevant to this particular moment. I mean, the other thing that I was going to bring up is Slater's Dance is like, you know, a huge song like everywhere you go in my universe and on the internet and yet like is never going to be on this chart. So I chose 10 songs for the poll on Patreon and in the comments, they were complaining that I didn't choose Slater. And I guess I was a little bit Midnight Sunny and that Slater was like my winter into my spring. It wasn't my summer, but it's undeniably having a moment particularly on the festival circuit.
Yeah. And the meme, the meme, right? Yes, definitely the meme. And so I guess that would be the song, but I feel like the people who are really plugged into Slater are now moved on to like brand new Chanel's and like there's new Slater songs coming out. I wasn't sure what Slater song to pick. This is why this whole exercise is so difficult now because it's like none of us are on the same page. And it's depressing because at the same time, like what made Song of Summer so fun in the past was because it was something that we all like coalesced around and shared and it just doesn't feel like that exists. Have you been following all the discourse around like people beyond us, not just like music commentators talking about like I've never heard this LL Langley song. Yes. Well, Dosea Cat. Yeah, like Dosea Cat. And insert Dosea Cat here. And like she is representative of a lot of people who are like what the fuck is this song that is now the longest running number one song in history. Like history. Like more than any other song you've ever heard, this LL Langley song is now the crown champion.
So like, what are we supposed to make of that? It's just so strange. Yeah, a few things about that. I think there is still this stagnation at the top of the charts, even after Billboard has made some changes to try to stop that. But I think what is happening in the background, the machine that is going on here is that we're stuck in a feedback loop with popular music. And the way that we're stuck in a feedback loop with much of popular culture, with IP with Hollywood only making safe bets. What's happening is like TikTok is making these random hits. That funnels into streaming, streaming dictates radio. And when something hits all of those marks, when something passes through all of those hoops, it sticks around because it is really hard to go through all of those. Yeah. But the gatekeepers, the radio programmers, the people who hold the purse strings at the label for marketing budgets, all of those people are more conservative than the
whenever they're only placing bets on sure things. Whereas in the past, A&R's job was to find interesting things happening and place bets on a whole bunch of stuff. And then things would filter up. So what you're saying is we need more gatekeepers. Kind of bluey. I actually do think that. I'm joking, but I'm not even joking. I actually think we're seeing, like, sort of like some of the results of like what it's like when there are no gatekeepers. Well, here is what I will say to that, because that is not what I was thinking when I was saying it, even though you quite like correctly pointed out that is what I was saying. It's not so bad to have people that have institutional knowledge and taste like helping. At least in the past, they were culture people versus algorithms. You know, algorithms and marketing people and business people. Yeah, it's exactly. I'd rather have a human being than a fucking algorithm, even the worst human being helping dictate some of this stuff than fucking AI algorithmic bullshit, if I'm being honest.
Yeah, a few days ago Spotify put out their songs of the summer list, which of course Spotify is a tech company. Of course, these are songs that are streaming in some capacity largely, but they are human chosen as well. The press release sort of makes a big deal out of that. They put out content explaining some of the list. And I think if you compare and contrast billboard song of the summer with Spotify's songs of the summer, you will see that there are to me much more interesting stuff happening on the Spotify list. Don't you think? Well, yeah, way cooler stuff. There's no hip hop on the hot one under it. At least like they have the young Miami song on here. They have Casey Musgraves on here. They have like things that feel like in conversation with true culture, with kids. Like I don't know what this list is. Like who is the audience for this billboard list? I don't understand who's listening to these songs.
It just feels like Starbucks, like background Starbucks music. Right? Yeah. Yeah, the Spotify list has sadness and it has the stuff that you were talking about earlier. I believe that Anne Powers once said to me that a song of the summer should have Fizz. And there are songs on this list that have Fizz. There's stuff that you would actually want to play at a party. There are beats that make your body move. That is so vital for songs in the summer. And that is missing from the charts. BB Rex, of course. BB Rex is on there. Who had a BB Rex summer. Yeah. In the sky right here. We should say spend that, I think, is the song the summer for some folks? Just the flip it pops some tape. Her girl going that go y'all bad. Spin it, she. Spin it, she. Friend of the Pod Lourishapal wrote a really great piece in Rolling Stone talking to different DJs about what the songs of the summer were in clubs versus on the charts. Right. And it had obviously much more interesting answers and much more to me compelling sounds.
But in some alternate reality, spend that should be a chart hit of the summer. Like it has some of that bodak yellow juice to it. You know what I mean? And this also reminds me like what I meant to say when I brought up Slater earlier, like the songs of summer, gorgeous gorgeous are definitely the Slater songs. Dance and grand. Yeah. Like those are the songs that like really grabbed hold in the club this summer from my perspective. So like this chart, I don't know. We've had a lot of episodes this year that are calling the Billboard Hot 100 into question. And at this point, the song of summer chart is just the Hot 100 of the summer. So it's like all of the problems with the Billboard chart are the same as the Hot 100, which is like pretty big, I think. Like there seems to be some pretty fundamental problems here if you ask me. So how this chart is working, I should explain the mechanisms behind it. And we are working off of the Billboard songs of the summer chart dated the week of September 5th. We're recording this just after Labor Day. This is a cumulative chart. That means that the data from each week on the Hot 100 has been pulled in and it rolls
over. So this is also a snapshot into the rolling problem, maybe some of the stagnation. Let's tackle the song at the top of the chart. The data chosen undisputed song of the summer according to the Billboard methodology. Ella Langley's Choosing Texas. We've talked about this song before. It is now breaking all sorts of records. You and I have both gone on record. I like it a little bit more than you do. You think this is a totally fine song. Yeah. I think it's totally fine. It reminds me so much of Miley Cyrus' Flowers, where I'm just kind of like, this is a totally serviceable song, but I cannot understand. Except actually based on the metrics that you just laid out, what makes this the biggest song of all time? Like the number two song is all I want for Christmas as you is the number two most long
running number one hit. I understand why that song has that longevity. Why Choosing Texas is the longest running number one hit of all time? I even understand something like Old Town Road. You know, you love it or hate it. It's got a singular point of view. It captured a really specific moment of TikTok virality. There's something there there. Like to me, I'm just like, this just feels like the epitome of serviceable. Again, I don't think it's bad at all. I think it's a totally lovely fine song aside from everything that you just said. And the way Billboard methodology works is there's like what makes this song exceptional in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 is just something I don't understand. This song, I think, strong bones, you know, it harkens back to a time when country music radio actually played women. It has been a really long time since that was the case. And representational speaking, I do like that about it. I don't think it's worthy of the number oneness it has garnered certainly the record breaking all of that.
Totally good. Not going to complain about it. Dunk on it. Good country song. Also can kind of see it as a song of the summer. You know, this is a type of song that plays well at a certain type of party. You know, this is a song that I think would play well at a state fair. It's breezy. It's easy listening. Yeah. The rest of the top 10, let's discuss Taylor song. Good to me, not super sticky. I really like it when I first listened to it. Maybe even a little bit more than you do if I recall, but I haven't been going back to it necessarily as obviously millions and millions of people have. It's the same to me as Shuse and Texas. It's perfectly fine. It's a solid song. I don't know, it just doesn't feel exceptional to me in her canon. I say that it's swifty. It also sounds a lot like Shuse and Texas.
I mean, we talked about it. I don't remember what the episode was, but a lot of these songs sound the same. Like literally sound the same to me. Like they're all very similar. There's a very consistent mid tempo country nodding thing that goes on on the top 100 right now on the top of the top 100. Yeah. Well, one of the reasons that they sound the same is that some of them are by the same artist, so the adean. Yeah. The adean and all the language. The all the language is in three of the six top spots for the song of summer, which is again, pretty depressing. Mm-hmm. If I had to pick a song of the summer out of the top 10 based on taste, I would say, I would probably actually go with Dracula. People coalesced around it on social media. It was a bit of a cultural moment, but it has something a little bit odd. It stands out certainly amongst the country.
So it has a singular artist point of view that like isn't just kind of like a nostalgia play. That and hate that I've made you love me are the only two songs in this top 10. I mean, I guess the Drake song we can talk about that, but that also just feels kind of like Drake cosplay of a past era too. Like there's nothing particularly exciting to me about that Drake song. Allowing these here three times, tailors here making a kind of conventional country song. There's two alluvian deansongs that are throwback, you know, soul songs. There are still a lefties like singer, songwriter, mush. You know, so basically Dracula does stand out on this list in that like I guess if you're a Tamin Paula fan, it doesn't sound particularly unique. It sounds very much like Tamin Paula, but like Tamin Paula's sound getting this high on the hot 100 is a unique thing. 100%. The Ariana Grande song really strong again to me sounds similar to the last era of Ariana Grande. I don't like this song that much, but in the context of this list, yeah, it sounds like
2026. It says something about our moment besides just kind of like mushy nostalgia mid tempo easy listening. I guess, but it is kind of easy listening too. I guess maybe the Drake song stands out in the sense that it's not necessarily easy listening, but I'd say every song besides the Drake song is like background music. Yes, we need to almost coin. It's not quite easy listening, but it's streaming listening, you know, it is streaming era easy listening in that it is songs that play list really well because they don't have anything in them that will break up your listening experience across. Nothing challenging, nothing. Nothing. Nothing surprising, nothing that makes you think, nothing that makes you feel that much. It's just like very light unchallenging kind of mid brow smush. That's not to say that any of these individual songs are not worthy on their own, but there is a broader trend that makes me feel like depressed about like this is what all we can
deal with or something at the moment. Maybe because life is so stressful or something, it's like this is all we can take is something that I've been wondering about. Well, and because the streaming ecosystem and the algorithmic choices are preferencing things that have the edges sounded off of them. Right, but I think that what is that responding to, which responding to like what people are going to listen to the most and it seems like what people are gravitating towards are things that don't challenge them. The back half of this numbers 11 through 20, a little bit more interesting here for me anyway. More pop girlies, first of all. At least Olivia, Rodrigo. Again, Olivia, there's a bunch of Olivia on here. We have. I'm shocked that she, I mean with this album being so, so humongous that not one of these songs could get into the top 10 is weird to me. So I was interested by that as well and obviously this is an incredibly successful era for Olivia Rodrigo, but I think it's actually kind of a feather in her cap that she has people listening
to the entirety of her album versus listening to one song, especially as somebody who broke out with one song and could have been associated forever with driver's license. The fact that people are listening to her body of work enough that there's three songs that were really popular all summer is I think there's more longevity in that type of career and she's starting to show that she is building a different type of career. Two songs by Mr. Bruno Mars. I know. So I guess risk at all is a big hit. Crazy, but it's true. There's nothing I won't do. I'd risk it off for you. We debated that at some point, right? In our step up, step down episode, we debated that and I think that it is a slam dunk step up with a little bit more distance from it. This era he had two really big hits, stadium tour, all of that.
To me, not a lot of juice in that record, but again, this is somebody who at one point had music that had a lot of flash and a lot of excitement, dynamism, etc. But also at one point has had even more easy listening than these songs. But these are pretty easy listening too. They are super easy. Yes. Olivia and Zara are the only songs on here that I guess Drake, I mean, we haven't really addressed Drake having two songs on here. Neither of these Drake songs speak to me. They speak to you. They don't. I will tell you for a minute, I had thrown on the Spotify playlist passively and I was just listening to it as I was washing the dishes and doing stuff and I caught what I thought
was a Drake song, which was Baby Chief Do It's Get a Love Story, which is this really fun party song. And I was like to do it. Maybe I have to take back some things that I had to say about Drake. This beat is really cool. This is really fun. And then I'm like, that's not Drake. That's like, oh, maybe this is some guy on a Drake song. Like, this is the type of music I wish Drake was making. And also the type of music that I wish was on the charts more fun songs that people dance to at parties. Like, we're really missing that in this collection of songs and Drake has made those songs. There's so much Drake music out and a gain story that I keep saying this, but I have been working on our fall and September episodes. And so next week we will be addressing Drake more holistically and I will have more
thoughts than in that. Malcolm Todd's earring good, but take his chart success and give it to a sister. Yeah. I mean, there's our Larson songs, the only song besides the Drake songs here. And I guess Olivia's, but like, our Larson's the only song that's really hit and hard. Like, that's the only song that's really like giving you like a fucking beat. I don't know. It's like so like the like the Dominic Fikesong is so chill. Tell me about this Luke Combs song. What's that about? I don't know. I didn't listen to that. I'm sorry. I didn't do the homework. Oh, I like country music, but Luke Combs has never been my guy. I think he is in offensive values, speaking like he's not like a man that I have beef with as I do some country guys, but he's not for me. He's not sack top. Should we read up this whole top 20? Can we flop her bop everyone? Yeah, sure. One, choose in Texas. Bop. I'll give it a bop. Two, I knew it.
I knew you. That's a bop. Yeah, that's a bop. Three, be her by eloingly. I'm giving that a bop. I hate that I made you love you at number four. Bop. I'll give it a bop. In this context. I mean, honestly, the bar's locked. I'm giving it to Ariana. Thank you for being in the top five and being a pop girl. I appreciate you. Even it's true. It's like the other context of all this stuff. Yeah, thank you for holding it down. Janice shut the fuck up. Soft flop. That's a flop. Six, I can't love you anymore by eloingly and more. Seven, Boston, Bice, L, F, Big flop. Sorry. Double flop. Double flop. Actually, I wrote down a whole bunch of stuff about Stella Lepty and Boston. On a train back to Boston, they were jumping up, Cunning on telling you, baby, this is a part out of hand. That is an entire thing that is going on. No, great. So, it's hefty, right? Yeah. Yeah. There is something particularly insidious about Stella Lepty's rise. At first, I thought she was sort of like Jesse Murph, 2026 model.
No. Jesse Murph was so much cooler than her. But I mean, someone who the label pushed out to meet a market demand. I thought maybe she'd have a minor hit or two, then we would never hear from her again, but she's actually like Gracie Abrams 2.0, like the sion of Groupon, a privileged daughter. Now she has to give way over song credits. She has nothing to do with the city of Boston. She also has a very little grise. I don't know if you've seen her performing. Oh, those stage videos. Yeah. Okay, so we're giving like a quadruple flop to Boston. Hard flop to that. Okay, so easy to fall in love at number eight by Olivia Dean. Like fine to me. I like, I'll give it a pop. I'm flopping it. Okay, great. Nine, man, I need, I'll pop that one. That I'm popping. But again, these songs are not song of summer. Sorry, we've been talking about these songs over a year. Give me a break. Yes. Ten Dracula. I'll give that a pop. Yeah, I just might, by Bruno Mars, I actually will give that one a pop too.
Softbop. Drop dead definitely pop. Thirteen risk at all. That's a flop to me. I don't like that song. Slop. The cure by Olivia. I'll give that a pop. Softbop Midnight's Unhuged Pop. Quadruple Bop. Stupid song by Olivia Rodrigo. That's also a pop. Sure. Pop. Magnets for brains for me. Seventeen. Shubang by Drake. Honestly, softbop. What? Softbop on it. Yeah. Fine. I think Bob. Fine. Dominic, Fike, Babydoll, number 20. Definitely a Bob for me. Yeah, that's a boop. Yeah. Also Dominic, Fike, Back Together with Hunter Schaefer. Very hot couple. Woof on the money. Okay. How do you feel about the bets that you made in spring? I don't remember. Do you remember? Yeah. I don't remember. Yeah. I don't remember. I don't remember. I don't remember. I don't remember. I don't remember. Do you remember? I don't. Do you remember?
Do you remember? I don't remember what I did. Okay, wait. I found it. Okay. Oh, actually maybe not so bad. Okay. Oh my god, not the Madonna Sabrina song. I'm looking at it and I don't think I was so so bad. Okay, run down. What you got? This is what I wrote down. A Drake song, drop dead or some Olivia Rodrigo song, choosing Texas. I have Elizabeth Taylor question mark, question mark, question mark, that was wrong. Midnight Sun, Arianna, some Charlie XC X single, nope. Dang, Sun, that didn't happen. Heck three situation, question mark. Hilarious. underscores, no, slater question mark. You chose underscores. I don't know if I chose that officially, but this is like what I'm looking at in terms of like what I brought when I did my list. I'm Madonna Sabrina Song. I spiced question mark Bruno and folded. Oh my god, I spiced.
I don't know what I was thinking with those things, but I do think I got a bunch of those right. You know better than me, you have what I actually put. Well, what I have for the first time, we invited everyone who is a patron to put together their list. And then I had my partner do something with an algorithm or a computer and some numbers and make a spreadsheet that is populated via the forms that everyone filled out, including us. It gains the chart that I don't know how to explain this, I don't know how to explain his job when people ask you what he does either, but I am looking at what has been fed out a list of how we did along with everyone else. So the first question is who do you think one between you
and me? Probably you. You would be incorrect, you one. What? Yes, congratulations. Oh my god, I should have had more confidence. I guess reading off that list, I don't think that I was so far off. Yeah, you made some good bets. And also my fatal mistake was Olivia Rodrigo, which is pretty funny. What, that you didn't bet on her? And then she had a bunch of songs in the backhand. And had I bet on her, you would have won. That's a personal character flaw that I have had historical trouble with Olivia Rodrigo, which I'm in fix. Shout out to Olivia Rodrigo by the way for the Daisy Chain Festival, which we haven't discussed. I thought that that was so cool. The people that you platformed what you did with the Palestinian dress, Latigra on stage, getting all of this discourse about young women and abortion into a really national conversation, hanging out with Sarah McLaughlin, having Do Chi painted pink, like really cool stuff going on there
with Olivia Rodrigo, sounded like it was hot and terrible in terms of what I would like from a concert going experience. Everyone that went that I knew said it was fantastic. And how to greet you? Okay, excellent. So you bet on drop dead, Olivia Rodrigo, specifically the single, choosing Texas Hell of Langley, specifically the single, you bet on Olivia Dean as an artist. So obviously that paid off because as an artist, you're in the top 10 there, you also bet on Drake as an artist. So that paid off, he had two songs on this, Dracula, tame Impala and Jenny. You bet on that as a song, great bet, midnight sun, great bet. Do you know what, this one, you earn nothing for it, but I think is a really great left of center, anything can happen, beauty and beat Justin Bieber. Oh, that's good, yeah. I like that, especially editorially. Pinkie up for Katzai, we thought that would be a thing. I think it was kind of, but it didn't get that.
It was a micro thing. Yeah, yeah. Freakin' out by Dexter in the Moon Rocks. Oh my God, wow, okay. It's somber just as an artist. Okay, so those were my best predictions. All right, I chose Chuse and Texas out of language. Man, I need Olivia Dean. I just might buy Bruno Mars. Oh, a very cynical choice that did not pay off Alex Warren's ordinary. I thought that would stick around. But did that just get kicked off because of the time limitations? No, because I calculated the time limitations in spring. I think it just finally faded. Oh, thank God. Okay. And also, I'm sure some mechanism of he was pushing a new album, so I'm sure the label took all of the support. I don't know, sometimes that has worked in the past for like Shaboosie. Totally. For Shaboos. Drake, I just voted on Drake. I also voted on somber. We really thought that we were gonna have a somber summer and we ended up not. I voted on Zara Larson, but didn't get the single treatment. I also voted on Pinkie up.
I voted Baby Doll Dominic Fike, but that didn't really help me that much. I did vote Dracula, Tayman Palo. So I think totally decent as well. Yeah. But I did not do as well as you. Okay, so how did we do against the listeners? What was the question? Well, I'll tell you, I have a list of the top 10 that I will post on Patreon. Okay. And the names Russ and DJ Louis are not in. Oh, I'm not surprised at all. Whatever people ask us to make predictions, I'm like, are you sure you want us to? Okay. Did she ask when? No. I will read these out at 10 Kaley Porter, nine Diego, eight Carishahel, seven Anna Huffman, six Gen W, five Kalen McDonald, four Ben Cillet, three Nick Fermay, two, just Mo, much like Elvis or Madonna. And number one, Sarah Vidsten.
What did Sarah guess? Do you know what? Let's pull them up. Sarah, how did you know? So Taylor Swift. Yeah. And neither of us got Taylor Swift. Yeah, right. That was Cillie of us. At the time that song didn't exist. I know, but it was Cillie of us to not imagine that Taylor Swift would make a song and have it be huge. Yeah, totally. We should be always thinking that's gonna happen. Alex Warren Ordinary, so another cynic here. Ariana Grande's hate that I made you love me. So slam dunk, Olivia Dean, Manineeds, slam dunk, top 10, Ella Langley, choosing Texas, slam dunk, that's in the top 10. I just might buy Bruno Mars just outside. Be her by Ella Langley. So she really put in money on Ella Langley. I'm an Ella Langley individual song. And Drake and Taymabella and Jenny, Zara Larson, Olivia Rodrigo, just as a back. Shout out to you, Sarah. Those were wise and maybe cynical, but very wild. Or being cynical is a smart move
when you're dealing with billboard charts. And with the Grammys, with most of the stuff that we predict, having like hope, joy, taste, that doesn't help you. Not in the finished games game. All right, that was our bummer somewhere on the charts. What did we learn? How do we feel? Where are we spiritually speaking? I just like want to live in a different summer. Like did in our reader poll put Danceteria at number one on the summer? Sure did. That's the world that I'm happy that we all live. At least in our Patreon, we all live in the same summer where Danceteria was the song of summer. Yes. And in the comments of that, of which there are quite a few, people had stuff to say about this. So many people were like, yeah, it's Ella Langley, but not in my heart. And I was like, do you know what? In our hearts, Danceteria. Danceteria, no, that's a song of summer.
What were the other like ranked songs that they listened to? It was kind of a landslide to be honest. 26% for Madonna. Yeah. This is the world I want to live in. Like I'm like, this has changed since we last looked at it. Oh, it's our lesson spin night sun one. Oh, it's number one. Oh my god. Yeah. Wow. 30%. Yes. Wow, 521 people voted. That's crazy. Yeah, yeah. Thank you for those votes. So it seems like the real obvious top three here was our lesson at number one. Danceteria at number two, choosing Texas at number three. Yeah. And then Olivia Rodrigo at number four with either the Carrar Stupid song and then everything else kind of flopped. Yeah. A lot of people shouting out Slater. I think had I put Slater on here, she would have done very well. No one really seems to think Taylor Swift. I'm kind of shocked. That is at 1%. I guess she's gone over.
Oh, but. Well, I feel so grateful to have had a summer with our patrons. Yes. Not necessarily with everybody else. Yeah, right. That's the world that I want to live in is the world where these songs are the actual songs of summer. Louis, this was a delight. Thank you so much for chatting with me about the song of the summer. See you next summer, hopefully. If the Earth's Silly will be back to do it again. Let us know what you think the song of the summer was. Next summer, ChatGVT chooses song of summer, 2020. Yeah. The Ella Langley bot for another year. Bye. Bye.
