White Sox Designate Páez, Red Sox Gamble

On April 1st, Chicago White Sox just designated 22-year-old pitcher Jetix and Payez for assignment

after grabbing him in the Rule 5 draft.

From the Boston Red Sox back in December, they swapped him out by calling up veteran

reliever Lucas Sims from Triple A Charlotte to bolster the bullpen.

Payez, a right-hander signed out of Venezuela in 2021, got a shot on opening day, despite

never pitching above High Able.

He struggled big time, giving up six hits, three walks, and six runs over just three

innings with no strikeouts, including a two run homer in there, lost to the Marlins

on Tuesday.

Fans and scouts see the potential though, Payez posted a solid 3.22 ERA in the minors for

Boston, racking up 3.7.

Strikeouts against only 49 walks in over 300 innings.

That jump to the majors was just too steep too soon.

Now he hits waiver since Rule 5 rules keep him off straight to motion, letting other teams

claim him for their roster.

If nobody bites, the Red Sox can buy him back for $50,000 and send him to the minors without

a 40-man spot.

This move shakes up both squads early in the season, highlighting how Rule 5 gambles can

go south fast, but might pay off down the line for someone.
