The In Harry Potter, the fate of the Wizarding World essentially rests on the destruction of Voldemort's whor-crucksers. With his whor-crucksers intact, Voldemort is essentially tethered to the mortal realm, no matter what the outcome, which obviously makes ending his tyrannical regime a tool order. But instead of the most powerful wizard of all time, leading the charge, the task is left to a 17-year-old.

2:02By the time we reach Half-Budd prints, Dumbledore has figured out the secret behind Voldemort's immortality. He knows that Voldemort has split his soul into multiple pieces, he has a pretty good idea of the kinds of objects Voldemort would have chosen, and he has even successfully tracked down and destroyed one of the whor-crucksers himself. My valor gaunt's ring lay on the desk before Dumbledore. It was cracked, the sort of Gryffindor lay beside it. But when Dumbledore dies, the job is nowhere near finished. And instead, the responsibility for locating and destroying the remaining whor-crucksers falls almost entirely on Harry, Ron and Hermione. Suddenly three teenagers who haven't even completed their education are expected to find some of the most carefully concealed dark objects in existence, while simultaneously avoiding Voldemort, the Datheters and a ministry that has effectively been taken. So how did this happen? And why if Dumbledore knew the whor-crucksers were the key to defeating Voldemort, didn't he act sooner or accomplish more?

3:03Dumbledore was the most powerful wizard in existence, even Voldemort feared him. So, someone's there, there was much stopping him. Adding to that, why didn't the order of the Phoenix help? And perhaps most importantly, how could he've entrusted such an enormous task to three students? Today we're gonna be discussing all of that and more as we take a closer look at what Dumbledore was actually doing during the years leading up to his death. How much he really knew about Voldemort's whor-crucksers and why the hunt ultimately had to continue without him? Now, before we continue any further, the first thing I want to establish is that Dumbledore actually was hunting whor-crucksers. Sometimes the story gives the impression that Dumbledore spent years sitting on information while waiting for Harry to become all-enough to deal with everything himself. But that isn't really what happens. The problem is that Dumbledore didn't start with a convenient list of seven objects and seven locations. And before anyone could physically start searching whor-crucksers, someone first had to establish that Voldemort had created them at all,

4:06determine how many he had made, figure out what kinds of objects he would have selected, and then somehow work out whether those objects might have been hidden. This was not an immediate process. Of course, Dumbledore had suspected for a long time that Voldemort had gone further than most dark wizards in attempting to avoid death. But one of the biggest breakthroughs actually came when Harry destroyed Dumbledore's diary in the Chamber of Secrets. The diary, of course, contained a fragment of Voldemort's soul. And the way Voldemort had treated it immediately struck Dumbledore as unusual. You would think that most people who create a whor-crucks would hide it somewhere incredibly secure and never allow it to leave that hiding place. Voldemort, however, had turned the diary into a weapon. He had intended for it to be used to reopen the Chamber of Secrets, which meant he was willing to risk the destruction of a piece of his own soul. And that actually told Dumbledore something very important. If Voldemort was willing to treat one of his whor-crucksers this casually, then perhaps it wasn't his only one. The careless way in which Voldemort regarded this whor-cruck

5:07seemed to most ominous to me. It suggested that he must have made, or been planning to make, more whor-crucksers, so that the loss of his first would not be so detrimental. I did not wish to believe it, but nothing else seemed to make sense. Then you told me two years later that on the night that Voldemort returned to his body, he made a most illuminating and alarming statement to his death-eaters. I, who have gone further than anybody along the path that leads to immortality, that was what you told me he said, further than anybody. And I thought I knew what that meant that the death-eaters did not. He was referring to his whor-crucksers, whor-crucksers in the plural, Harry, which I do not believe any other wizard has ever had. Yet it fitted. Lord Voldemort has seemed to grow less human with the passing years, and the transformation he has undergone seemed to me to be only explicable if his soul was mutilated beyond the realms of what we might call usual evil. And so he's made himself impossible to kill by murdering other people, said Harry, why couldn't he make a source of stone, or steal one if he was so interested in immortality?

6:10From the point of the diary onward, Dumbledore's job became less like a treasure hunt, and more like an investigation into Tom Riddle himself. He started collecting memories from people who had encountered Voldemort at different stages of his life, not because he was simply interested in giving Harry a history lesson, but because those memories contained clues. The orphanage, the gaunt family, heps of a smith, sly corn, borg and bucks, each piece helped Dumbledore reconstruct Voldemort's psychology, and gradually work out what kinds of objects would appeal to him. And that was essential because a whor-crucks could technically be almost anything. If Voldemort had chosen random objects and buried them in random places, finding them would have been almost impossible. But fortunately, Voldemort wasn't random. He was sentimental in his own strange way. He cared deeply about proving that he was exceptional. Dumbledore understood that if Voldemort was going to place pieces of his soul and scientific objects, he wouldn't be satisfied with ordinary containers. He would choose trophies and relics

7:10that reflected the identity he had constructed for himself. That is ultimately why the memories Dumbledore shows Harry in half-plug prints are so important. He isn't simply telling Harry what the whor-crucks is are. He is teaching him how to recognize them. Now, said Dumbledore, if you don't mind Harry, I want to pause once more to draw your attention to certain parts of our story. Voldemort had committed another murder, whether it was his first since he killed the riddles, I do not know, but I think it was. This time, as you will have seen, he killed not for revenge, but for gain. He wanted the two fabulous trophies that poor, besotted old woman showed him. Just as he had once robbed the other children at his orphanage, just as he had stolen his uncle Morphin's ring. So he ran off now with Hebserbuss' cup and a locket. And eventually this investigation paid off. The first whor-crucks at Dumbledore managed to locate was Marvolo Gantz' ring, which Voldemort had turned into a whor-crucks and hidden in the ruins of the Gantz family home. What's immediately worth mentioning here,

8:12given the nature of the video, is that Dumbledore didn't ask Harry or anyone else to destroy it. He did it himself using the sword of Gryffindor, which had absorbed Baselis Kvenum after Harry used it in the chamber of secrets. So run away, this answers part of the question. In fact, when he knew our whole crux was and possessed the means to destroy it, he went after it personally. But unfortunately, the ring whole crux also changed everything because it contained something Dumbledle had spent most of his life thinking about

10:13the resurrection stone. Of course, Dumbledle undoubtedly knew the ring to be cursed as he knew that it had been turned into a whole crux by Voldemort. However, he claims it in his excitement of recovering the stone at long last. He quite forgot that it was a most dangerous item indeed as he explains to Harry after his death while the two catch up in them though. After another short pause, Harry said, he tried to use the resurrection stone, Dumbledle nodded. When I discovered it, after all those years, buried in the abandoned home of the Gaunts, the hollow I'd craved most of all, though in my youth I'd wanted it for very different reasons. I lost my head, Harry. I quite forgot that it was now a whole crux that the ring was sure to carry a curse. I picked it up and I put it on. And for a second, I imagined that I was about to see Ariana and my mother and my father and to tell them how very, very sorry I was. From that point to the curse, it immediately began spreading through Dumbledle's body. Snape was able to contain it within his hand, but he couldn't remove it completely, which means Dumbledle had effectively been given a death sentence.

11:16Why, said Snape, without preamble. Why did you put on that ring? It carries a curse. I'm sure you realize that. Why even touch it? This highlights the single most important reason Dumbledle didn't personally finish the horcrux hunt. He ran out of time. Once Dumbledle knew he was dying, the entire problem changed. It was no longer enough for him to keep investigating Voldemort and hope that eventually he would locate every horcrux himself. He now had to assume that he would be dead before the job was finished, which meant someone else needed to understand everything he had learned well enough to continue without him. And that person was Harry. This helps explain why so much of Half-Plood Prince is devoted to Dumbledle or showing Harry memories rather than simply handing him a list and telling him what to look for. And Dumbledle himself didn't have a complete list. He had theories. He believed Voldemort had intended to divide his soul into seven pieces, meaning six horcruxes plus the fragment remaining within Voldemort himself. He had identified several likely objects

12:17and already knew that the diary and ring had been destroyed. But much of the puzzle was still incomplete. Harry therefore needed more than instructions. He needed to understand the logic that had led Dumbledle to those conclusions in the first place. Because once Dumbledle was gone, Harry would have to make similar deductions himself. This becomes especially clear when Dumbledle discusses Voldemort's attachment to Hogwarts. Voldemort regarded Hogwarts as his first real home and attached enormous importance to the school and his history. That gave Dumbledle reason to suspect that Voldemort might have sought objects belonging to the four founders, which in turn pointed toward things like Hufflepuff's cup and southern slocket. Harry couldn't just be told to find the remaining horcruxes, because without understanding why Voldemort chose particular objects and places, the search would have been hopeless. There was also another big problem. Dumbledle still didn't know where most of them were. Of course, this is easy to overlook because by the end of the series, we know exactly where every horcrux ended up.

13:17But we have to remember that Dumbledle was working backwards from scraps of information. One could have been hidden in the cave, another in a vault, another somewhere inside Hogwarts, another with Voldemort himself. And even if Dumbledle correctly guess the identity of an object, that didn't tell him where Voldemort had hidden it, which is exactly why assembling more people wouldn't necessarily solve the problem. Ten Aura's searching Britain wouldn't be especially useful if nobody knew what they were searching for or where to begin. And in fact, bringing more people into the investigation could have created an entirely different problem, because Voldemort could not be allowed to know that his horcruxes had been discovered. This is something Dumbledle takes extremely seriously. When Harry asks whether he can tell Ron and Hermione what he's learned, Dumbledle allows it. But specifically warned him that nobody else should know how much they understand about Voldemort's secrets. Dumbledle considered him for a moment, then said, yes, I think Mr. Weasley and Miss Granger have proved themselves trustworthy. But Harry, I'm going to ask you to ask them not to repeat any of this to anybody else.

14:19It would not be a good idea if word got around how much I know or suspect about Lord Voldemort's secrets. And this actually explains another question that naturally follows the first. Why not get help from the order of the Phoenix? The order included extremely capable witches and wizards. But the simple answer is that most of them didn't know horcruxes were involved at all. Dumbledle deliberately kept that information restricted to an extraordinarily small group. We see exactly how seriously Harry takes its instruction after Dumbledle dies. McGonagall asks Harry where he and Dumbledle had gone on the night of Dumbledle's death, and Harry refuses to tell her. Even with Dumbledle dead, Harry believes the instruction still stands. After glancing once at this portrait, Professor McGonagall made an odd movement as though stealing herself, then rounded the desk to look at Harry, her face taught and lined. Harry, she said, I'd like to know what you and Professor Dumbledle were doing this evening when you left the school. I can't tell you that professor, said Harry. He had expected the question and had his answer ready.

15:19It had been here in this very room that Dumbledle had told him that he was to confide the contents of their lessons to nobody, but Ron and Hermione. Harry, it might be important, said Professor McGonagall. It is, said Harry, very. But he didn't want me to tell anyone. Professor McGonagall glared at him. Potter, Harry registered the renewed use of his surname. In the light of Professor Dumbledle's death, I think you must see that the situation has changed somewhat. I don't think so, said Harry, shrugging. Professor Dumbledle never told me to stop following his orders if he died. The same thing happens later when Lupin suspects that Dumbledle left Harry some kind of mission. Lupin even offers to accompany Harry and provide protection without even knowing exactly what Harry is trying to do, but Harry realizes that it would be almost impossible to hunt hall cruxers alongside Lupin without eventually revealing what they were doing. Can you confide in me what the mission is? Harry looked into the prematurely lined face, framed in thick but graying hair, and to wish that he could return a different answer. I can't read, Miss, I'm sorry.

16:21If Dumbledle didn't tell you, I don't think I can. Every additional person who knew about the hall cruxers created another opportunity for Voldemort to learn that this secret had been discovered. And the moment Voldemort realized his hall cruxers were being hunted, the advantage disappeared. At the end of Deathly Hallows, when Voldemort finally clues into what Harry's doing, he panics and begins mentally checking the locations of the hall cruxers, which actually inadvertently gives Harry crucial information through their connection. But if Voldemort had discovered Dumbledle's investigation years earlier, he could have strengthened their protections or created entirely new hiding places. Whole crutches can't be destroyed through ordinary magical damage. The container has to be destroyed beyond magical repair, which severely limits the methods available. Bacillus venom works, fentifier works, the sort of griffened or works because it had absorbed bacillus venom. These are hardly convenient options, particularly when the whole crutch itself may also be protected by curses and traps. The locket, it's perhaps the best example of just how difficult one successful whole crutch hunt could be. Dumbledore eventually finds the seaside cave because he's studied Voldemort's childhood and remembers the story of young Tom Riddle taking two children from his orphanage there. He realizes that location had personal significance to Voldemort and eventually works out that something important has been hidden inside. But finding the cave was just step one. From there, Dumbledore had to locate a magically concealed entrance, open it using blood,

19:24cross an underground lake filled with inferry and then drink a potion that leaves him confused, terrified and physically helpless. By the time Harry and Dumbledore escape, Dumbledore is barely capable of defending himself. And after all that, the locket they retrieve isn't even the whole crutch because regular blackhead already taken it. Dumbledore began to cower as though invisible torturous surrounded him. His flailing hand almost knocked the refilled goblet from Harry's trembling hands as he moaned. Don't hurt them, don't hurt them, please, please. It's my fault, hurt me instead. Here, drink this, drink this, you'll be all right said Harry desperately. And once again, Dumbledore obeyed him, opening his mouth, even his he kept his eyes tight shut and shook from head to foot. This is all part of the answer. Even when he correctly identified a hiding place and personally went there, there was no guarantee that he would walk out unscathed. On this occasion, the process nearly killed him and ultimately failed to produce the actual hawkrucks. And by that point, Dumbledore was already dying anyway. This makes this behavior

20:25throughout the Half-Platte Prince much easier to understand. Dumbledore was essentially working against a clock. He knew he had limited time remaining and he had several objectives that all needed to be accomplished before his death. He needed to continue investigating the hawkrucksers. He needed to prepare Harry to continue that investigation. He needed to preserve Stamps' position as a spy. And eventually, he needed to arrange the circumstances of his own death in a way that protected Draco while strengthening Stamps' position with Voldemort. He had a lot on his plate. Dumbledore spent his remaining time trying to give Harry the knowledge he would need to continue a mission. Dumbledore increasingly understood he would not live long enough to finish. There was one more reason Harry specifically had to be at the center of it. Harry possessed something Dumbledore did not, a direct connection to Voldemort. That connection was dangerous and Dumbledore spent much of order of the Phoenix desperately trying to limit it. But it eventually became one of the most useful tools in the entire hawkrucks hunt.

21:25Harry was able to glimpse Voldemort's thoughts and emotions and near the end of the war, this connection helped him understand where Voldemort believed his remaining hawkruxes were hidden. Dumbledore, as wise as he was, could investigate Voldemort from the outside. But Harry, in a strange way, could sometimes see him from within. There is also one darker element related to Dumbledore's decision to place so much responsibility on Harry and Harry himself eventually comes to recognize it. Dumbledore knew that Harry had become connected Voldemort in a way that went beyond their matching one cause or shared mental connection. A fragment of Voldemort's soul was living inside Harry which meant that defeating Voldemort completely would ultimately require that fragment to be destroyed as well. In other words, Harry wasn't just hunting hawkruxes, he was one. And when Harry walks into the forbidden forest, facing death, he begins to see Dumbledore's plan in an extremely bleak light. From Harry's perspective, Dumbledore had handed the dangerous task of destroying Voldemort's hawkruxes

22:25to someone whose own death would eventually be required anyway. Dumbledore's portrayal was almost nothing. Of course, there had been a bigger plan. Harry had simply been too foolish to see it. He realized that now. He had never questioned his own assumption that Dumbledore wanted him alive. Now he saw that his lifespan had always been determined by how long it took to eliminate all the hawkruxes. Dumbledore had passed the job of destroying them to him. And obediently he had continued to chip away at the bonds tying not only Voldemort, but himself to life. How neat, how elegant, not to waste anymore lives, but to give the dangerous task to the boy who had already been marked for slaughter. And his death would not be a calamity, but another blow against Voldemort. And Dumbledore had known that Harry wouldn't duck out, that he would keep going to the end, even though it was his end, because he had taken trouble to get to know him, hadn't he? Dumbledore knew, as Voldemort knew, that Harry wouldn't let anyone else dive for him now that he had discovered it was in his power to stop it.

23:27The images of Fred looping in Tonk's line dead in the great hall forced their way back into his mind's eye. And for a moment he could hardly breathe. Death was impatient. Whether Dumbledore viewed it as coldly as Harry fears in that moment is another discussion entirely, because Dumbledore also appears to have hoped that Voldemort taking Harry's blood would create a path for Harry to survive. But from a strategic standpoint, the reality is that Harry was always going to have been involved in Voldemort's final defeat. Sure, Dumbledore could destroy the ring and search for the others, but he could never complete the entire process without Harry eventually confronting a piece of Voldemort that existed inside himself. So why didn't Dumbledore destroy Voldemort's forcruxes himself? The answer is that he tried. And facing the inevitability of his own death, rather than trying to personally finish everything before he died, Dumbledore devoted his final year to making sure the investigation could survive him. He sent Harry, because by the time he finally understood

24:27enough about Voldemort's secret to have a realistic chance of destroying it, he knew that he wouldn't be around long enough to see the job through. In a perfect world, Dumbledore would have restrained from putting my vlog watch ring on his finger, eliminating the urgency of training Harry on the mission.
