Welcome to your daily dose of hope, I'm Phyllis Nichols and I'm glad you're here.

You know when we face big problems, we think small actions or the actions of just an individual
0:11
like me, like you, can feel really meaningless, it can feel like we don't make a difference,
0:19
What does the action of one person really accomplish?
0:22
You know right now there are really significant things happening in the world, things that
0:26
feel really big and they are big and they can make us feel powerless.
0:30
You know, how can one person stop a war or a military action?
0:34
How can one person try and feed people who are going hungry or get medical care to people
0:41
What can one person really do?
0:44
And you know the answer and I'm reminding myself of this every day is more than we think.
0:50
A lot of big challenges are rarely solved all at once, they're solved piece by piece
0:55
through conversations, by making decisions to speak up, by looking at new ideas or new
1:02
Sometimes it's just the action to step forward and say, hey, I want to be part of a solution.
1:08
Small actions change the relationship we have with the problem to it, no longer feels
1:12
like something overwhelming, it feels like something where we can contribute.
1:19
But each time we do something, it reminds us that progress is possible and this reminds
1:26
me of the quote by Margaret Mead as an anthropologist and you probably heard this before but I'm
1:32
going to just read it because I think it's really appropriate for these times.
1:38
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world.
1:43
Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
1:46
You know, this reminds us the significant change, almost always comes from dedicated
1:51
local actions rather than some massive immediate consensus.
1:57
Hope isn't always loud, it's not always pushy.
2:01
Sometimes it's the quiet and steady showing up as the next small step.
2:07
Big problems can make small steps feel insignificant but real progress happens one step at a time.
