Despite their success, the past two seasons, the BYU football program will have to climb
0:45
a pretty steep hill once again if they want to live their playoff dreams this fall.
0:55
You are Lockdown Cougars, your daily podcast on the BYU Cougars, part of the Lockdown Podcast
1:02
Network, your team every day.
1:05
What's up everybody, I'm Jake Hatch.
1:08
Coming up on today's show, we dig into where BYU is currently slated in terms of the
1:11
college football playoff odds for this coming season.
1:14
And yet again, it looks like the Cougars have to climb up the hill if they want to live
1:18
We'll talk about that.
1:19
They won't talk about what Kevin Young could potentially do with a talent like Colin
1:25
According to the athletic, there is a lot, a lot to like about the fit between the both
1:30
We'll get into that.
1:31
And we'll finish up today's show with yet another big man BYU is in the mix for Julius
1:36
Who is he and what is he offered to BYU potentially?
1:39
We'll get into all of that ahead on today's show and do want to thank you guys as always
1:43
for making us over here at Lockdown, the number one sports podcast network.
1:48
So if you didn't see it, Fandall, who's a proud sponsor of ours here on the Lockdown
1:52
podcast network, put out their college football playoff odds.
1:56
And if you want me to spoil a surprise, I won't bear the lead BYU is picked 19th in terms
2:01
of their overall best odds of making the college football playoff.
2:05
For comparison's sake, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, who obviously are the class of the big
2:10
12 and most people's eyes, are picked to be the second most likely team to make the college
2:14
football playoff behind, another than then the Notre Dame fighting Irish.
2:20
In theory, if things work out the way the BYU football hopes they work out this season,
2:25
they could see Texas Tech in the big 12 title game because both programs are not scheduled
2:29
to face one another in the regular season.
2:32
And then oh, by the way, yeah, there's that mid October home date, maybe the biggest
2:36
game in quite literally years in Provo, Utah Notre Dame fighting Irish coming to Provo
2:42
could be for playoff birth for lack of a better term when it comes to BYU.
2:48
Now, being 19th in these playoff odds is not a death knell for BYU, but if you look
2:53
at the teams in and around BYU in these rankings, well, you're going up against the who's
2:58
who of college football.
2:59
For example, Michigan, where, you know, Jay Hill and General Guilford formerly of BYU are
3:04
now coaching, they are plus 270 odds as compared to BYU's plus 430 odds.
3:09
And Michigan is just a Paltry four slot, four slots, six slots ahead of BYU in these
3:16
USC plus 280, Penn State plus 370, a program that Klannis Taka was potentially going to
3:22
go and coach has better odds according to Fandall than BYU making the college football
3:28
Now while that may sound kind of doom and gloom about BYU, I don't think this is anything
3:33
out of the ordinary for BYU's experience to the past two seasons.
3:37
They have found themselves on the outside looking in when it comes to the preseason rankings
3:41
and have had to fight their way in to those college football playoff rankings and there's
3:46
a discussion coming up later this week, according to reports out there that those shows with
3:51
the rankings could go the way the dinosaurs.
3:54
I don't think they're going to, but beyond beside the point, BYU's had to fight an uphill
3:58
climb both of the last two seasons and found themselves right there on the proverbial doorstep
4:04
of being in the college football playoff.
4:06
They were two teams out this past year.
4:08
They were essentially a team out the year before that.
4:11
So the thought is BYU is knocking on the door and very likely ready to break down that
4:19
But these playoff odds indicate that they don't think BYU has it this year for whatever
4:24
Now could it be that they think there's a regression to the mean for BYU?
4:27
Maybe so, but I look at this BYU roster this year and I'm more juiced and more amped than
4:33
I have been the past two years and I've been pretty excited about the last two seasons
4:36
of BYU football, considering what they have accomplished.
4:39
This year's roster, in my opinion, is almost the payoff for what the last two years have
4:45
And that, if you want to talk about a, quote, payoff, to me, that would be making the
4:50
college football playoff.
4:51
But looking at these fan dual odds, it indicates that yet again, as Clionys and Tauke is talked
4:57
about, it'll be an uphill climb.
4:59
They're going to have to climb a pretty steep hill.
5:00
They're going to have to battle against the national perception of a number of other programs
5:04
who, in my opinion, don't hold a candle to BYU.
5:07
No, it's nothing against, for example, Penn State.
5:10
Matt Campbell is one of my favorite coaches in all of college football.
5:13
He worked incredible miracles with the Iowa State cyclones, but in year one of his 10-year
5:19
and happy value out there in state college, Pennsylvania, they have better odds of making
5:23
it over BYU in the college football playoff.
5:26
That reached to me a big 10 and SEC elitism favoring that program versus a BYU program
5:34
under Clionys and Tauke has been a pillar of success and a pillar of consistency the
5:40
So it's, like I said, it's nothing against Penn State.
5:42
It's nothing against these programs, but the name brands yet again are getting the off-season
5:47
love, the BYU for whatever reason does not get.
5:50
And quite honestly, in my opinion, it will take BYU knocking down the door, like literally
5:56
going undefeated, knocking down the door and advancing in the college football playoff,
6:00
which no big 12 team in this new era of the big 12 has done quite yet.
6:03
Not even the vaunted Texas Tech Red Raiders, remember, they got just smacked by Oregon this
6:10
It feels like to me BYU will not only have to make it into the playoff field, but advance
6:15
in said playoff if they want to garner the respect, the prestige, whatever you want
6:21
to call it, the BYU football program I believe deserves and for whatever reason continues
6:27
to have to fight scratch and claw for any little part that they can muster.
6:32
There are a number of national media out there who are fans of BYU, at least our fans
6:37
of clients to talk a and root on the cougars, but trust me, there are more that are ready
6:41
just to dismiss BYU at every turn it feels like.
6:45
And the hope is that this year, once again, that payoff comes in the form of BYU making
6:50
that run we all hope for and that would hopefully include a major home upset win over what,
6:56
man, I think it be top five, what was Notre Dame going to be ranked when BYU plays
7:01
And for that matter, what's BYU going to be ranked because BYU will be ranked in
7:04
the preseason polls, unless the cronies out there when it comes to the national media
7:09
for whatever reason, downgrade BYU to some significant degree, but that game speaking
7:15
of Notre Dame and BYU, if it's as close as some think it might be and heck, if BYU pulls
7:20
off the upset, that could be the ticket to BYU playing in the college football playoff
7:26
because that would be maybe the single best resume building win in all of college football.
7:32
So there is a lot, a lot for you as a cougar fan to look forward to about this football season.
7:38
There is a lot for the football program itself to look forward to, but yet again, they
7:42
are battling against national perception, national prestige, whatever.
7:47
The stuages on the national media stage seem to have an extra grand about BYU.
7:52
They're going to have to fight uphill once again, and I don't think clonies to talk in
7:57
his football program and I can play in one bit.
7:59
Yeah, maybe if you got them off the record and put some truths to your name, they'd be
8:03
like, yeah, we're a little disappointed that after what we've done the past few years,
8:06
piling up a 23 and four record that we maybe deserve a little more of the gravitas or
8:12
the, the, yeah, I guess just overall respect that a program the caliber or BYU is seeking,
8:19
but I think that only comes with proven success at the highest levels and once again, that
8:25
means you got to climb uphill, you got to fight against the national perception of the
8:30
big 12 and also the perception of BYU and break down that door.
8:35
And I hope they do it.
8:36
I would love nothing more than to cover a team that after two seasons of being one of
8:40
the bridesmaids when it comes to the college football playoff, they knock down that door
8:44
and they're one of the brides that makes it in and heaven forbid they advance in the
8:49
college football playoff.
8:50
That, that would put BYU on the national stage, unlike they have been for 40 plus years.
8:58
Maybe on that 40, but 30 plus years since they went 14 and one in 1996 and we're one
9:03
of the bridesmaids that year.
9:07
The nice part is the doors open in theory for BYU to go through and play for a national
9:13
Let's hope they go out and seize it.
9:15
All right, let's look over to BYU basketball coming up next.
9:18
The athletic has put out an article talking about what they consider to be ideal fits in
9:22
the transfer portal between players who have left a program and landed with a new program
9:26
and one of those guys is Colin Chandler and they've got a lot, a lot to say about why
9:32
he fits so well with Kevin Young.
9:34
They show brought to you by Fandall, the NBA playoff store here every possession matters.
9:39
Every matchup is magnified and every game swings a series it feels like every single
9:43

10:08
players and key moments to take advantage of.
10:10
It just makes the entire playoff experience that much more engaging from start to finish
10:13
in the nice part is whether you want to bet on LeBron James leading the Los Angeles Lakers
10:18
past the KD less Houston Rockets.
10:21
You think that Nicola Yochich and the Denver Nuggets are ready to make a run.
10:23

11:24
The athletic wrote a great piece and they have written about a transfer portal fits ideal
11:31
I think it's the best term to say when it comes to players, they think are better suited
11:36
They're about to call home.
11:38
And one of those names is I was reading through this popped up and it says call and Chandler
11:43
Now as they point out at Kentucky, he had 9.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.2
11:48
steals per game while shooting 41% from three and 83.3% from the free throw line.
11:53
There's athletic transfer portal rank was number 43 overall.
11:56
And this is what they have to say about calling Chandler BYU where Chandler began his career.
12:00
Now, didn't begin his career BYU, only signed with BYU, didn't want an omission, but
12:05
that's beside the point before falling Mark Pope to Kentucky.
12:08
It's a safe bet to it's safe to bet on the six foot five guard, at least becoming the
12:12
best version of himself.
12:14
Now that sounds enticing.
12:16
Well, here's what they also had to say about this.
12:18
The cats mostly as Chandler to be a three point shooter and he thrived in that role, making
12:21
41% of his 4.9 trades per game, a top 150 rate nationally per Kenpom.
12:28
He also rated the 91st percentile nationally as a spot up shooter percentage.
12:31
But Chandler's statistical profile also shows he's actually more than capable of getting
12:35
his shot off in other ways, like in transition.
12:39
More than half of his transition, Phil Gold attempts to came from three percentage where
12:42
he shot 46.4% from three, nearly 50% in transition from three.
12:47
He's a natural pulling up all defenses retreat and his NBA range means he can't, he doesn't
12:51
have to get far past mid court to fire.
12:54
They mentioned this, Kevin Young is one of those creative offensive coaches in the sport
12:58
and will ensure that Chandler thrives alongside point guard Rob Wright and five star recruit
13:04
But can Young push Chandler to become more than a three point marksman?
13:08
That's the question.
13:09
I will just also give a surprise and say, yes, he can.
13:12
Any of you who watch Colin Chandler in high school at Farmington High School saw a three
13:16
level score that looked the part of a young budding superstar that I think has NBA potential
13:23
I think Phil still think that's there.
13:25
Kevin Young has the ability to pull out of guys the best of their ability because I've
13:30
mentioned this on the podcast before, for those of you who are every dayers and it's something
13:34
Coems has pointed out is that that's from the sophomore years of a guy like Richie Saunders
13:40
and Colin Chandler are eerily similar.
13:43
Now Colin Chandler comes to BYU for his junior season for his first season playing with
13:49
The parallel to Richie Saunders is that Richie Saunders finishes sophomore.
13:53
You're playing for Mark Pope of BYU.
13:56
Then his junior year was his first year and the first year for Kevin Young in Provo.
14:01
Well, what did Richie Saunders career play out like?
14:03
Well that junior year all he did was become the most improved player in the big 12 conference.
14:08
The first team all big 12 conference player and became the heart and soul of the BYU basketball
14:14
While this past season ended in disappointing fashion with him tearing that ACL, which
14:18
is just a downer note, you can expect I think in my mind that Colin Chandler, if Richie
14:25
Saunders can take a leap that he took as a junior under Kevin Young, why can't Colin Chandler
14:30
do that very same thing?
14:32
And in fact, I would bet pretty decent money that that's going to play out.
14:37
I watched Colin Chandler in high school and I remember when BYU was recruiting my man,
14:41
this kid, the best comparison I could think of in my mind was a young, not young, but
14:48
a Travis Hanson look alike.
14:50
And any of you who remember Travis Hanson, you have to be of a certain age because Travis
14:54
played for BYU in the early 2000s.
14:56
But Travis, man, if there was one thing he brought, it brought an ability to score from
15:02
anywhere on the court.
15:03
And that's kind of the point that was made here by the athletic is that yes, he is thriving
15:08
And if he can shoot yet 46 plus percent from three in transition, man, that makes him a weapon
15:14
everywhere on the court.
15:15
And by the way, it doesn't mean he always has to pull up and shoot shoot a three because
15:19
all he's got to do is pump fake drive to the rim and he should in theory be able to get
15:23
right there on the rim.
15:24
And any of you who watch Colin Chandler in high school, I'll remind you that dude could
15:28
yam it with the best of them.
15:30
Some of the best dunks I have seen in Utah prep history came during Colin Chandler's run
15:34
at Farmington High School.
15:35
This is a kid that he can play.
15:38
He's got a lot, a lot of skill in him.
15:41
And I am super, super excited to see what he can do in a Cougar uniform.
15:47
Now, that will obviously entail, like I said, him getting, as they mentioned, alongside
15:51
working alongside Rob Wright, the third and also Bruce Branch, the third.
15:55
But the expectation is I think that Kevin Young learned a very important, if not hard
16:00
lesson this past year, about making sure that you don't have too many cooks in the kitchen.
16:05
And I think that's a lot of what I think curtailed BYU's effectiveness line up wise is you
16:11
had three guys in Rob Wright, A.J.D. Bonza and Richie Saunders who were thinking, hey, I'm
16:20
No, it's that it's the Spider-Man meme where they all kind of point at each other.
16:23
That's kind of the way it felt with this BYU basketball squad.
16:26
Now while I expect Rob Wright to third to be a guy that is going to handle the ball most
16:31
most of the time, it feels like this year, the nice part about Bruce Branch the third and
16:35
Colin Chandler is both of their skill sets don't require heavy, unball presence.
16:41
They don't have to have the ball in their hand constantly to succeed.
16:45
And that in theory should, I think, solve that cooks in the kitchen problem that I perceive
16:50
to be the issue with this BYU basketball squad this past year.
16:54
I hope it comes to fruition and I hope that Colin Chandler takes the leap as a junior
16:58
that we saw Richie Saunders take under Kevin Young.
17:01
Because if that happens, you're talking about a guy who's going to flirt with 20 points
17:05
Can he add five assists, five rebounds and become just a statistical nightmare every single
17:10
night for opposing teams?
17:11
And you have to get Rob Wright scored near 20 and Bruce Branch, like you could have another
17:16
big three here, but it could be the best version of a big three that BYU wanted this past
17:22
That is the exciting part about what a guy that Colin Chandler could offer here.
17:26
And as they mentioned, can they pull more out of him than what they got at Kentucky
17:31
out of Colin Chandler?
17:32
Yeah, I think they can because as they mentioned, Colin Chandler was relegated to essentially
17:37
a three point specialist role.
17:39
And that's what Kentucky required of him because Mark Pope's teams, Mark's Pope team this
17:45
They outside of him didn't really have a consistent three point presence.
17:49
Now, you may also may argue that BYU didn't have that and you'd be well within your rights
17:53
to argue said argument.
17:58
But the nice part is BYU has got, I think, a good mix right now.
18:02
Now, it is going to require, you know, having a center who can protect the rim and offer
18:08
And we talked yesterday about a guy with Luigi Swigo who could be that option and we'll
18:12
talk about Julius Halifanua in just a minute.
18:15
But I think that the makings of this BYU roster at the top end right now, they're enticing
18:21
because I think a guy that Colin Chandler's ability, like he said, on or off the ball, shows
18:26
a lot of potential to still take another leap or two, it feels like in his career.
18:33
And he made the comment to BYU sports nation when he appeared was the last week.
18:38
He mentioned I got two years with Kevin Young.
18:40
So he's not necessarily intent on making this just like a one year stop off of BYU and
18:44
then jump into the NBA.
18:46
Now, could he have, I guess, a statistical explosion and decide, you know what, being a
18:50
return missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and being an older
18:55
Maybe I take the leap.
18:56
Now, you can't rule that out.
18:57
But the fact that he is approaching this is having two years to get it right under Kevin
19:02
Man, that is enticing in a very, very tantalizing proposition to consider what a guy like
19:09
Colin Chandler could offer if he does end up playing two years for the BYU basketball
19:15
So really appreciated what the athletic had to write about this, but I agree with him.
19:20
They have gotten a lot out of him already during his time at Kentucky, but as he pointed
19:24
out, he's happy to be back home.
19:25
His wife was ecstatic to come back to Utah.
19:28
And I think the comfort level of being at a place that he originally fell in love with
19:33
speaking of BYU, playing for a coach, as they point out, is about as good as it comes
19:38
when it comes to pulling the best out of his players in Kevin Young.
19:43
Don't bet on Colin, don't not bet on Colin Chandler taking the leap for BYU because I really
19:49
think he has got it within him because I saw that potential in high school and I want to
19:55
And the best part is it could be realized in a BYU uniform rather than a Kentucky uniform.
20:01
We'll finish up today's show coming up next as I mentioned, Julius Halifanua, who is he
20:05
and why would BYU want a guy from New Zealand to man their center spot?
20:10
Well, his name is Stephen Adams, Ring of Bell.
20:13
Thank you once again for making Lockdown Cougars.

20:56
And thank you for making it a part of your day.
20:58
Because as we like to say here on the Lockdown podcast network, it is truly your team
21:02
speaking of BYU every day.
21:06
Julius Halifanua, he is a guy that you're going to want to file a way in terms of a transfer
21:11
portal target for BYU and the reason why is, well, you can't argue that the fact that
21:16
he's seven foot 260 pounds and he has already got proven production at the power five level
21:22
having played for the Georgetown Hoyas.
21:24
Now he is a sophomore and I think you could petition for a year back.
21:29
He only played six games as a freshman for the Hoyas.
21:32
This past year played 32 games at Georgetown in the Big East, averages to shade under 20 minutes
21:38
Shot 60.8% from the field scored nearly 10 points for game, had nearly four and a half
21:43
rebounds and also had 1.3 assists and nearly a block of game.
21:47
Those are all really enticing numbers and oh, by the way, his turnover rate less than
21:52
So this is a big man who has got I think a lot of potential in him and can you get that
21:59
out of him and can he come in to BYU?
22:01
Maybe he's playing with Luigi Swigo, maybe he's not, but he could have come to BYU and
22:05
be their Cougar version of Stephen Adams.
22:09
Now, any of you know the story of Stephen Adams, he was a guy who was a big, just a big
22:15
body who came over from New Zealand and becoming a star for the pit, no, it was a pit panthers
22:22
and then has gone on to have just a pretty incredible career as one of the true just
22:30
And he doesn't do it with any like a plomb, he doesn't do it with big flashy.
22:36
He is one of those quiet giants that you don't mess with.
22:40
There are some stories by him and you can see it in some videos.
22:44
I think I picked up people and just carried them and you're like, man, that is a very,
22:49
Well, the reason why I bring up Julius Halifanua and Link Stephen Adams is both of them
22:54
are New Zealand natives and Halifanua is a guy that is a former top 60 prospect.
23:00
As I said, he's already got proven production to the power five level having played in
23:04
And if BYU were lucky enough to pick him up, he would continue a strong trend this
23:09
offseason for Kevin Young and Company of bringing in players who have played at the level
23:13
the big 12 plays at and that is power five.
23:16
I think they learned a lesson from last year thinking they could bring in mid major
23:20
type talents and expected they would thrive at the big 12 level.
23:23
Some of them throw, throw, thrived, thrived, yes.
23:27
Some of them thrived.
23:28
Other ones flopped.
23:30
I think they have bet on the fact, okay, if these guys have already played at this level,
23:34
the expectation, the physical nature, the, just understanding the night in and night out
23:38
grind of the big 12 is not going to be news to them.
23:42
And that's why I think a guy like Halifanua offers to BYU and ultimately picks the
23:47
Now, any of you who have been paying attention to the transfer portal, it is absolutely
23:52
nuts out there when it comes to big men.
23:54
This year, the most expensive position to add a player in the transfer portal according
23:59
to everybody I have talked to in the reports I've seen out there are true big men.
24:04
They can command four to five million dollars reportedly on the open market.
24:08
Now, as we all know, BYU is a private institution and they will never open up the books to really
24:13
reveal what they're paying NIL wise.
24:14
But we have been told by multiple people that BYU has got a deep bag when it comes
24:19
to NIL and they're unafraid if they have the player or players that they're interested
24:24
in about spending that money on those players is Julius Halifanua, the player that BYU
24:31
Well, what I have understood is the BYU has made contact with him and there's been
24:35
other reports of that and they are intent on seeing what he could offer to BYU.
24:40
I think that this would be a very intriguing pickup because much like we talked about
24:45
if you missed it earlier on in today's podcast, go back and check it out.
24:48
I got it calling Chandler.
24:50
Could the leap he could take as a from a sophomore to junior season at BYU?
24:57
Couldn't you hope that I got like Julius Halifanua comes into BYU and has that same type
25:00
of a leap with Kevin Young as his coach?
25:04
That's what you would hope and that's I think maybe the one of the selling points that
25:07
BYU makes to a young man of his caliber saying, hey, this is what we're all about.
25:13
Obviously I would imagine being that New Zealand is not necessarily the most, it's not the
25:17
biggest country in terms of population.
25:21
I can't say this for certain, but I'd be very surprised if I got like Julius Halifanua
25:26
with a name that sounds Polynesian.
25:28
If he doesn't have some association at some level of members of the Church of Jesus Christ
25:33
of Latter-day State, Stephen Adams, his sister Valerie is a very strong member of the church
25:38
who is a three time gold medalist in the shop putt.
25:41
Now Stephen, I don't know if he's ever been bad type.
25:44
But the connection that Aussies, New Zealanders, Kiwis, they have with the church, by and
25:50
large, they either are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, be
25:55
have family that are members of the church or at their minimum, have association in some
26:00
a former fashion of their life that they know members of the faith.
26:04
So in theory, I think Julius would have a touch point to understand what BYU is the flagship
26:12
university of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would be all about.
26:15
And obviously, he would have an understanding of what standards are at BYU and that's
26:21
another thing that Kevin Young, I think it's underrepresented, is that he is not going
26:25
to hide what BYU is all about.
26:27
He's been very open about, this is the standard we expect to be why you.
26:32
And I think that any player who may be like, I'm not sure about that BYU, all you got
26:37
to do is turn to AJD bonds and AJD bonds had every opportunity to go anywhere in the
26:41
country he wanted to go.
26:43
And he settled on BYU and said, you know what?
26:45
These are the standards they set for.
26:47
I signed up to play here.
26:48
So therefore, I'm going to live by said standards.
26:51
I can respect all of that.
26:52
And it's something that Clion and Satake is echoed forever since he took over at BYU
26:56
is that the standard is the standard of BYU and that is the honor code you've got to abide
27:01
But it is looked at, I think, by both Kevin Young and Clion and Satake as a strength versus
27:07
an impediment in terms of bringing young men into their programs and it just absolves
27:13
them of a lot of the distractions out there.
27:15
A lot of young men deal with in college and allows them to pursue what they are looking
27:21
And I think I got Julius Halifanua.
27:22
He's probably looking to make an MBA future or making a professional basketball future
27:27
Well, BYU can offer that because I've talked about on this podcast, everything that Kevin
27:31
Young has built at BYU, all the personalities added.
27:35
They are MBA level type people, training staff, nutritionist.
27:40
He wants to make it as MBA-esque as he possibly can at the college level.
27:45
And that's got to also be an enticing prospect to anybody, even not even just a guy like Julius
27:52
So I think this would be a very, very nice pickup if BYU can bring in Halifanua.
27:57
And yes, I also don't think it precludes them from bringing a guy like Luigi Swiego in
28:01
and saying, hey, may the best man win.
28:04
The other simple fact of life is that you need two or three legit big men in the big
28:10
I think we saw that very glaringly obvious this past season.
28:14
I will forever love Kebukete and what he offered to BYU.
28:18
But when Kebuk went off the floor, man, it was a black hole.
28:21
It felt like at that center spot.
28:22
And like I said, it's nothing against Xavier on state and it's nothing against Abdullah
28:27
They just weren't it.
28:28
So I think Kevin Young is intent on adding multiple big men in this transfer portal
28:34
And the hope is they, yeah, if it's if it's Luigi Swiego, if it's Julius Halifanua, you
28:40
need to find multiple of those guys.
28:42
If you want to have the success, you hope to have as the BYU football, that football BYU
28:47
basketball program hopes to have this coming season.
