About this episode

Chris Micieli and Zach Pearson dissect the persistent snubs faced by Bednar, question the award voting dynamics, and spotlight why star-studded rosters shouldn’t disqualify highly effective coaches. The hosts break down FanDuel’s latest Jack Adams odds, debate the cases for Peter DeBoer, Paul Maurice, and Marty St-Louis, and share dark horse picks. With another NHL season right around the corner, one thing is for sure when it's all set and done, Jared Bed and I will probably get screwed out of another Jack Adams. Let's talk about it. We're going to lock down Abouance coming out.

Your Lockdown Avalanche, your daily podcast on the Colorado Avalanche, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. All right, everybody. Welcome to another episode of Lockdown Avalanche, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. I'm your host, Chris, Micelli, joining me as always, Mr. Zach Pearson on today's episode. We're going to say some nice things. We'll continue that series today. It is the New York Rangers. We are also right at the end. We're just going to throw out our Super Bowl predictions because I have a feeling you are not going home or whatsoever. No chance at that. So we'll just do that right at the end button to show up. But where we're going to start is like we've been doing all week, taking one NHL award and kind of throwing out our thoughts on who's in the running for this upcoming season and predict who we think will win it. We have done the heart and we have done the Norris today.

We're doing the Jack Adams for best coach in the league, which has been a point of contention for the Colorado Avalanche and they're faithful because Jared Bednar, it's just an annual current. It's like a birthday party. It's like Christmas. It's name your holiday. It is an annual event to see where Jared Bednar is as the season progresses and then just to get shut out usually at the end. So let's start there. I hate getting my hopes up on this every year. But I don't know if I even should bother. I don't know what else he could do to even be nominated. But then again, John Cooper last year, we'll talk about that, but give me your overall thoughts. There's such a difficult chance for him to win this.

I want him to so bad. You cannot use the argument this year. Oh, well, he has Nathan McKinnon and he has amazing goal tenders and he has Kale McCarr and look at all the things they went right for him. Okay, John Cooper literally had the Hartrofie winner, the Vezna trophy winner and he won the award. So you can kick rocks with that argument. That's just that's got to go right out the window. Unfortunately, I think there's probably going to be some other people that will push for this award. And Jared Bednar might just get overlooked. Colorado's a flyover sports town to like everybody national anyway. They like the coast and then the coast and then anything in this region doesn't really seem to exist. I've noticed. I mean, we'll get to the Super Bowl later, but the Broncos even too. Like people are actually talking about him this year, but as the are the Broncos, the

most overlooked team in the NFL. And yeah, yeah, they could be. So I think it's going to happen to bed. See again, I think he deserves it. I think he's deserved it for. To be a finalist at least for nine out of his 10 years, but yeah, it's like it's an uphill battle. Last year, I remember seeing because the regular season the abs had, I remember seeing at certain times, like maybe two or three times during the season. The coach will put up, oh, like I think even the NHL account put up things are like, oh, who's the favorite? If voting were held today, you know, just kind of ranking like awards, basically. And they do the Jack Adams. And I remember last year, Bednar was at the top because because of the season. Yeah, yeah. And then it's just like the first sign of a little bit of dissension, not dissentions,

the wrong word, just a little bit of like coming back down to earth. And it's like done. He's done. Nope, not putting him in there. They're the best team in the league, but only by a small margin. So if Jared Bednar gets no credit, so that he literally has to be flawless. Like, I just have the feeling that he, they have to go like 80, well, now 84 now, they have to go like 84. And like he needs to do something. No other coach has ever done in the history of the league, which I don't know what that is anymore, because he's done everything. And I think it like these are and rightly so, like all of these awards are regular season awards. And I think that hurts Jared Bednar. I really do. Because if it was going to into the post season and you wait till the season is over and after, you know, everything that's happened with the avalanche since their Stanley Cup win and then things that happen last year, if they were to win it, I think people would use that as part of their vote, but because they can't and the voting needs to be in before

the playoffs even start, he's done it all in the regular season. So there's nothing he can do in the regular season for people to be like, wow, this is the season that I'm going to vote for Jared Bednar. Everything he did in the past, I'm not going to vote. I shouldn't say not vote for him. He has got votes in the past and he has been a finalist in the past. What is there for him to do for people to put him over the top and say, yes, this year he's going to win it. I say that knowing full well, that's what happened to John Cooper last year. Yeah. Cooper do. And if you listen to the show, we, I think you're on board with me like it's sacrilegious that John Cooper had not won one either. 100%. So, but what did Cooper do last year to get that award? I don't know. That's the, I wanted to go into this season being like, there's no way that Jared Bednar gets it.

But how they awarded it to John Cooper last year. Now my, I'm like, there's a chance. There's a chance if John Cooper did it with not even winning the division, not even, you know, crawling into the playoffs. I mean, that's an exaggeration. But you know what I mean? Then Jared Bednar has got a chance and I am back on board and I hate myself for it. We talked about this in the last episode or the episode before, but sometime this week. And I said, take the avalanche season last year and reverse kind of how it went. Have a good, but not almost flawless. Start to the season and then have an almost flawless back half of the season. And then I think bedsy wins it because that's essentially what Tampa did. Like they were slow to start and then they caught lightning in a bottle. They were absolutely lightning in a bottle.

So, but they went just on a tear and were ripping it up to get their way into the playoffs and get back up to the top of their division. He was impressive and I think that that is what voters were seeing in order to put because I do wonder if you're not sitting there. And last year you go, man, there's coaches that really deserve this award who have never won it. Jared Bednar and John Cooper. And then you look at like what both teams are doing. Oh, well, the avalanche are still in first, but they like the gaps, not that wide anymore. And they look kind of more human than, you know, robotic machines. And Tampa Bay looks crazy. I think that helped him out. So man, there is a chance, but I just, to me, it feels like the dumb and dumb are a chance. I don't feel great about him being able to pull off this award. I wonder if voters, the ones that voted for Cooper last year, and you can't tell me that

wasn't just to give him one. It felt like it really did. And I'm kind of fine with it. And I'm kind of not right. Not that he's on deserving. Like the guy needed one. It's just frustrating that it happens in a season where Bednar had once again, another masterclass behind the bench and maybe there's going in order of longevity because Cooper has been coaching a lot of the year longer than Bednar. So maybe they got his out of the way first and this year they'll hand it to Jared Bednar. I don't know if this is like their plan, but it seems like it's a good plan. I like the plan. And then you can get the two coaches that are most deserving out of the way and then you can go back to giving it to undeserving coaches. New coaches. New, yes, new coaches with a new team. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. But I feel like I'm just fooling myself. I do. I feel like I do. Because I want this for him. And the same reason you want it for John Cooper, it fills out their resume.

Yeah, it's meaningful. So we've been doing this. I wanted to bring up the voting from last year. So there's Cooper. Lindy Ruff, who I think just got host like that. That should have been his all day. I think he had Dan News. Right? And I liked that Dan News was in there. I thought he did a great job. There's Bednar in a distant fourth. So I don't know. I see. And that's the thing is I'm not angry about those top three. I do think Lindy Ruff should have won it over John Cooper. You took the Buffalo Sabers that far, the Buffalo Sabers that far. That should have been his over Cooper if bedsy can't even be in the top three. But I'm not mad about those three. I was pretty impressed with Dan News as well. So it's like infuriating, but it's I think it's even more so angry because of the fact

that I'm like, man, those guys all deserve the award. I remember saying when we were going over finalists and stuff like that, I remember saying if you were to tell me which one is the slam dunk, it was Lindy Ruff getting. That was my five. Yep. I don't know what that was in the bag. No doubt about it. It should have been. That's why I don't gamble. Buffalo the Sabers, man. Yep. So let's get a break in on the other side. You're going to bring up the the fan duel favorites for the Jack Adams and we'll give our picks. This should be fun. We'll do it next. All right. So you're from fan duel. Welcome to your most rewarding NFL season ever only on fan duel and how rewarding are we talking about here? Make this your most rewarding season ever with Fandall visit Fandall.com right now to get started. All right. So the Jack Adams, I feel like the Jack Adams is the easiest one to predict preseason. Yeah.

Outside, I do because I just feel like there's a mode for how people vote on this. And you could say that for the heart. You could just go to it, Mick David. I get that part of it. Like that's easy. But I'm like, there's, there's just like some, there's a designed differently for the Jack Adams. And it's usually a brand new coach with a new team. That's usually where it goes. Oh, boys. So what it feels like almost always. I haven't looked at the Fandall odds. So it's usually like the only one that it would not be if it's not a new coach is like the coach of the defending Santa Cokes champions. So it's either Rod Brindamore at the top or a brand new coach with, I should say, a new coach with a new team. If you're looking at the bullet points over on YouTube, I have old Nemesis has the best chance.

I think it's Peter DeBore. Okay. See, that was one that I was, I was interested. I thought he might be a pretty good one too. Yeah. Peter DeBore and Rob Brindamore both are middle-ish of the pack. Really? Yep. That surprises me. Brindamore at plus 1 to 500 DeBore at plus 27. So I'll give you one other before he tell me who it is. But I thought DeBore is a slam dunk. It's just like the meat it just seems to love that guy. And if I'll go to the playoffs, like he's going to get so many votes. He's going to get it. No, no down about it. And the other one I'll say because it's the team he went to, Jim Hiller with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Okay. He is, he was also, he's a lot higher. I think he's, he's top 10, but he's plus 2000. Okay. All right. He's still, he's still, is it a new coach? I should say, he's a new coach. Like new, I don't think he's on a new team. I'm pretty sure.

I mean, the coach that we're talking now, yeah, the guy with the best odds right now, I'm pretty sure he coached this team last year. Okay, because the third one I was going to throw out was Mike Babcock. Okay. Okay. That's what white layers, not Mike Babcock either. Who is he? Let me validate this. Let me validate. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It looks like he's been a couple of years. Okay. Ryan Warsawwski. The San Jose Sharks. Oh, the Sharks. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. I get it. That makes sense. I was really, really hard to understand. So hype. You see, and that's exactly what my reaction was is when I'm like, oh, I know it's going to be like Pete DeBourre, move into the aisle or I thought Hitler as well. I also was all over Brindamore. Like these are all names that I thought would be at the top. And then I saw San Jose Sharks. And I'm like, oh, everybody's hyped on them. Well, we're on the hype and then because of the players, not because of the coach.

Well, but so, you know, that doesn't matter. Hence John Cooper winning last year. Right. That is a, that is a solid. Yeah. And that's what's happening. Makes sense. Right. Yep. So then in second right now, you have Paul Maurice with Florida at plus 1100. He's always up there. And a bounce back season from them would, would definitely put him in the conversation. We'll boost him. Yep. Peter Lovie let with the LAKings. He was another one I was going to bring because he's brand new to that team. Yeah. Sheldon Keith with the New Jersey Devils. He was the hot ticket. His first year with the Devils when he left Toronto. And, and that first year with the Devils, he was number one. Yeah. Number one, and it made sense because that's, that was the, the, the perfect scenario for what voters love in this award. Yep. Good coach, leaving a good team. He leaves that team a good team and goes to a little bit of a lesser team and he can turn them around. Yep. And it has so far hasn't happened, but yeah, okay.

You can see that. And then that leaves us to fifth with Jared Bednar and the Colorado. Really? Yep. Fifth plus 1700. I kind of want to take that right now and be okay with it. I wouldn't mind. I mean, it's not bad. And then to round out the next few, you got John Hines with Minnesota, Rick bonus with the Blue Jackets, Jim Hiller with Toronto, Spencer Carberry with Washington and then Ryan Craig with the Vegas Golden Knights. He, I don't think he's, I don't know. We'll see what happens with that. I don't think. They he might not last a season. Well, the way Vegas drinks there. And I will say that about every single coach that coaches for a Vegas is he might not last the season. It could be. Yeah. Greatest coach in the league. Yeah. Look what. Oh, my gosh. Why am I blanking on his name? But the guy that took over at the end of the season, EJ's coach from Philadelphia, Torrella, Torrella.

Thank you. Yeah. I was just, I think it, uh, truck it and I couldn't get that out of my head. But Torrella comes in, doesn't amazing job getting that team into the playoffs when they were looking like they were going to miss and then getting them all the way to the stand and cup final, including a sweep over our avalanche. And then is just like, oops, see you later. You didn't have a contract and we don't feel like bringing you on. So, so out the door. You go. Yeah, you have. They don't have no loyalty to anybody. Player. No. Um, over on subtext, then we'll throw out our prediction for it. Adam says I'd love to see Jared Bednar in the conversation with Jack Adams, but it will most likely be Marty St. Louis. Okay. Yeah, that's just a couple further down plus 2,200. Uh, Paul Maurice or Rod Brindamore. I think those are three good picks for him. Um, excuse me, Nick says the, the joke Adams award will go to whichever new coach takes a non-playoff team from last year back to the playoffs this year, unless Bednar wears some kind of pimp suit to the outdoor game.

That worked for Cooper last year. I love that. That is a fantastic comment from start to finish the obsession with Cooper's outfit at that outdoor game was a little ridiculous. I mean, it was a fun outfit, but yeah, there was a little too much on it. I liked it. Yeah. I mean, if you're voting for him as best coach because of a suit, then yeah, you should probably have your credential. We got a problem. Examined. Uh, bear says obviously Bednar should be a finalist, but we all know that won't happen. I expect Maurice to be there with all of the Panther hype dark horse. If Utah shows more improvement would be Alex turniggy to get some attention. I've thrown him out there in the past. Um, yeah, I think he maybe has an outside shot. If Utah takes one of the top three spots in the central. Well, and he's at the same odds as Martin St. Louis and does it.

Talk it. Yep. Okay. And Lindy Ruff, all of them, 2200. So. And then Joey says, uh, rod the bod for the Jack Adams. I don't know. I like. I think that's the easy answer just to go give it to the, uh, the reigning champ, but usually doesn't happen that way. It usually doesn't. If they go out and have a season like they did last year. And like in the regular season included, because they were really good through the whole regular season, then it's possible. I think his odds should be better than they are on fan rule, but I do think it's going to be. It's the same thing. He's got an uphill battle just like Jared Bednar does. So then who do you think? Throughout your, throughout your prediction. If not Jared Bednar, I mean, I know we're both going to say Bednar, but outside. I really want Bednar to win it, but Marty St. Louis was kind of my thought for who I might go with.

I really like what Montreal has been doing. If they can continue on the climb upwards right now, then I like that a lot. All right. I think he could be a great one. If he can get the islanders to sniff a playoffs, but he's got it racked up. Which it's going to be a tall task. But if he can somehow, some way get them into the playoffs, he's got it locked up. I think he's going to be a great player. He's going to be a great player. I think he's going to be a great player. Now, some way get them into the playoffs. He's got it locked up. If not, I'm going to say Paul Maurice. And I don't think that's going to be very deserving. He has an all start team there. But people are going to look at it like, Oh, he had a massive turnaround. All right. Yeah, but the roster turned around too.

Yeah. So I could coach that team. And again, be fine. with that argument. Yeah. Because you cannot give it to John Cooper after Kucharov and Vasilevsky both win the heart and the Vezno respectively. And then tell me like, oh, well, you know, he doesn't deserve it because of the team, whatever. That's not that's clearly not how the voting goes. Get the heck out of here. Give Jared Bednar his Jack Adams. Yeah. Totally agree. We riot this year. We riot at dawn. All right. Let's get to last break in and we're going to say some nice things about the New York Rangers and then throw out our style. I was going to say Stanley Cup hockey's on the brain. Super whole predictions will do that. All right. This one's easy for me. If you listen to this show at all, you know, the East Coast team of mine is the New York Rangers. So it's very easy for me to say nice things about them. So I will hold off and I will turn it over to

you right now for anything that you have nice to say about my East Coast team. I am going to start it off with Henry Bluntquist. He is probably my all time favorite gold tender that didn't win a Stanley Cup. I absolutely phenomenal watching him play. Loved every second of it. I think he's great on the broadcast. He's smart. He's insightful. He's great at breaking down what's happening in the game. He's so good. He did the interview with 32 thoughts with Elliott Friedman. Excellent, excellent interview. His heart issue is the same one that I have. So fun fact there. So I found that. Yep. There you go. So that's just another added piece. Guys are best friends. Yeah. Right. I wish. Give me into one of those games there. But no, I've always been a big fan of Hank. I thought he's the one guy that I would. I definitely wanted to win the Stanley Cup probably above anybody else

who in their career had not yet won one. Yeah. So there, but a lot of credit to him for sticking with the Rangers through the whole career, even though he did kind of try to go to another team and then all the other stuff. But yeah, yep. It was weird. I mean, he never played for him, but it was going to be weird to see him in a different. It would not have looked good. No, it would have been weird. But I mean, you, you, the way you said that, like, you know, he's your favorite goalie that never want to stand the cup. For me, it's removing that part of the sentence that said that never want to stand the cup. He's just one of my favorite players ever. Oh, he, yeah, he's out there. Yeah. But I got to put wall above him. Yeah. I can see that. Yeah. I got it. But for me, like, Rangers were kind of like who I rooted for as a kid because before the avalanche came into existence, that was my father's team. He was a Ranger fan. My dad was all New York stuff. So he was Nick's Rangers, Jets and Metz. I went to Colorado for my teams because of John L. Wade, but that's a whole

another story. But I watched Ranger games. And that's where I, you know, that's who I watched all those guys. And, you know, Rangers golees, I compare it to like the Terrell Davis and the years after for the Denver Broncos with running backs. Like, yeah, remember the Broncos just put any running back in there and they'd run for, you know, 1500 yards and just, you know, be incredible. Like a hand system. Yeah. And this was over the course of several decades with the Rangers, but they just had golees. Longfist, John Van Beesbrook, John Richter, Eddie Jackeman, now Igor Shastirken, the list just goes on and on and on the history of golees for the Rangers. It's like you play golees for the Rangers and you're going to be okay. Well, and it does seem that when you leave playing golees for the Rangers, your career sort of does not derail. Yeah. Looking at you, Alexander, you're give what in the world happened there

because there was discussion about are you the guy taking over permanently until Shastirken just blew everybody's minds? And even if you go there, like look, look what Jonathan Quik did in his last few years of his career. Yeah, just retired. Yeah. Yeah, good. And his career as a backup is pretty decent. The team sure did, but he was okay. He looks good in that. Yep. We always throw out players that we like from from these teams. I could go on forever. One of my favorites as a kid is because of the name, but he's a really good player, Jeff Bukabou. One of the greatest names ever. Mike Gartner. Mike Gartner. I played Mike Gartner on NHL 94. Was it 94? Yeah. Like fastest guy in the game. Yeah. Love that guy. Adam Gray is Brian Leach. Obviously, Messier, obviously, Greski loved Ace of Tickenin. And then step on Motto, Motto, Motto, when they won the game in the Stanley Cup fight like just and then the history of the

Rangers obviously original six team. The Jersey itself is just an iconic Jersey. I was going to bring that one up. It always looks good. They don't differ greatly from it with any of their designs, but it always looks good. They'll change it up when they have like an outdoor game, obviously. And the outdoor ones have been hit or miss, but when they hit, they're awesome. Yeah, that's true. And when they miss, and they're not, I don't like them. But I mean, like any of the redesigns for like their regular everyday days, they're kind of they, they keep pretty much the same theme. And that's because that that works really well. Yeah. I have a fun goal effect for the Rangers that I only found out about today when making sure I had extra nice things to say. Okay. Did you know in game two of the 1928 Stanley Cup final, their coach Lester Patrick had to step in and play goalie for two periods. When was this 1928? I remember, I think I remember Ellie Friedman talking about that on 32

thoughts. I remember that happening. Lauren Shabbat was got a serious eye injury in the game. And so their 44 year old coach had to step in to play goalie. And he only led in one goal. Right. The Rangers win the game and over time. Look at that. I remember hearing that. I think it was at 32 thoughts. Yeah. That's awesome. That feels like maybe the start to the excellent goal to like the universe. They injured the goalie. And so the universe kind of went, oh man, these guys have to always have a good goalie from now. Right. This has to balance out. Yeah. That's awesome. That's so cool. Awesome. And I only have two other things. But again, I could go on forever. My opinion, the best play by play guys, Sam Rosen called games for years on MSG retired a couple years ago. But he was the best, the absolute best bar none to listen to. And then where they play Madison Squaregood.

It's it's iconic for all the right reasons. Definitely go there once check out a game. It's fantastic. Yeah. I need to get there. I really do. Yeah. It's a great, great place. So yeah, that one was easy for me. So let's see what they got over on subtext. We got Adam. Since Rangers have to be front and center to some of the most iconic line brawls in the game. Also, I like Adam Fox, mainly because of his name. Adam. Adam sent this. Adam sent this here and talk about Adam Fox. Okay. Yeah. By the way, Gil of Lockdown Islanders wrote a book about the rivalry of the Islanders and the Rangers. Oh, he did it. Yes, yes, you're right. Go go check that out. Nick says nice thing about the Rangers. Oh, okay. They're my favorite baseball team.

Is what Nick said. Come on, Nick. No, it's you have to say something nice about the New York Rangers. I know. That's funny. Bear says New York Rangers would be one of my top three East teams. They've just been frustrating past couple seasons. The Benajad is underrated. Really cool history and culture. Some great retro jerseys and mostly MSG is the Mecca for US arenas. Yeah, the Benajad is just a cool dude. He's cool dude. Yeah. Any DJs in the off season. Well, that's cool. Come on. Yeah. And then Joey says for the Rangers, they have one of the best arenas in the NHL. I'm guessing they've never been to any arena other than ball, but MSG does seem pretty cool. Yeah, I go wherever you're. It is absolutely. It is. So all right, fire away in the comment section about anything on that. We're going to wrap things up with our Super Bowl predictions. Years past, we haven't been able to pick the Denver Broncos, but

you can do it this year and people aren't going to look at you sideways. Yeah. So what do you got? I'm going Denver Broncos. You can't tell me like you have who they're going to be or no, you're just going. I don't know who's going to come out in the NFC this year. Because there's plenty of good teams. Seattle could go back. They've got a really good setup the way that they're built. And I would love revenge on the Super Bowl that we pretended didn't happen. So that would be great. But no, I haven't thought about who would come out of the NFC. I just there's no way that Broncos don't make the Super Bowl. If Bonyx does not break his ankle against the bills, you have both Bonyx in that game in the snow against the Patriots, which I was at stayed in the whole thing. And it was awesome except for losing. But you will not convince me that they don't win with Bonyx. And because Bose got that L-way,

I can win from behind. I don't care the situation. I will force this issue until I have come back in one. So I think that carries over. All you did was add weapons for him. Your defense is still topped here. Just having Pat Sartane is going to be huge. I love the Broncos. They're a little bit of a longer shot on Vanduil right now. They're plus 1900 and they're down at like 12. Really? Wow. Yeah. Vanduil has the Detroit Lions above the Denver Broncos. Just one that's again for a moment. I mean, normally you'd be like, wow, that's weird, but isn't Detroit bad? Had they been better the past? Detroit's a little season better, but they still like don't win are still Detroit. Yeah. I'm with you. I'm going full Broncos this year and I will say who they will go up against. One of two teams. And for the same reason. And you already mentioned the reason.

It's either going to be against the Seattle Seahawks or San Francisco 49ers. God, I'd both that too. So they get that you got to knock those out one at a time. You can't do it both in one year. So you don't care who it is. If it's the 49ers, you get rid of that disaster. It was at 1990, 1991. And then obviously the one with Manning against Seattle. And the snubber's head. Yeah. And it was just downhill from there. So it never got better after that. To I'm going to go Broncos against either the 49ers or the Seahawks. And one of those two Super Bowls is the talent for it. It would be kind of fun to be the 49ers and beat a Shanahan for a Super Bowl. Oh, yeah. There you go. That would be quite enjoyable. But yeah, it's Broncos all the way. I do it. I'm getting excited. We're going to have two parades at least this year. Come on. No. All right. You heard it here first.
