Will Mark Carney call an election?

0:00well it is time to check in with a sandy white our political commentator here on the show in this week it's all about the liberals in auto and in kibak good morning to you sandy good morning to and thanks for having me okay let's start things off in auto a more floor crossings at talk of a possible election all eyes on mark carney what can you tell us a lot of things are happening right now do i know they're all pretty fascinating so lori it loud is now the first person and as many months to cross the liberals at the end he continues to fly all around like a drunk hippie at a grateful bed concert and opportunistic parliamentarians are looking for a better future so this now puts the liberals a few seats away from a majority but there are some nuances around that there are three seats open and vacant in the house of commons right now so three bi-elections are being called for April 13th tour in the GTA one is in kibak if the liberals win all three they finally have a solid majority but if they only win two of them they have a technical majority because the speaker of the house a liberal is not allowed to vote along party lines now i think they actually do win all three of them

1:03we'll talk about that in a moment but what does this mean for an election i guess is a big question so i expect mark carney is not going to call an election now there really won't be a need anymore if they win all three of these seats parties on the cusp of a majority and carney has been a ruthlessly brilliant tactician in courting people to his party it shows in a or better for worse he's willing to use all these low-hanging tools that is disposal to get the government's power and i think no party wants an election right now the ndp is broken leader list with now one fewer mp the conservatives are hemorrhaging support the block is seeing their fortunes decline too generally this would be a great time for the liberals to secure a majority but i think they don't need it and carney is in the middle of all these substantial projects an election would make a lot of Canadians angry and make him look like an unserious opportunitist which i think would hurt his brand so i don't think so despite all the the the the rumors and the hoopla around everyone saying this is the time for him to call it you're just saying he doesn't need it well exactly what's the point there are so many things happening in kind of the right now and around the world this would be

2:04a terrible time for an election we are threatened as a country by so many angles we just saw 90 thousand jobs shed last month the country is being plunged into uncertainty in an election for months because there's a campaign period then there's the new government getting into place house doesn't sit for a long time let's remember join in 2025 was the fewest number of days at the house of common sat in 50 years things have to get done bills have to get fast and i think carney is a bit of a man on a mission right now and whether you love him or hate him he is getting his mission done so i don't think he's a person who's going to deviate from that course interesting and and he is a man on a mission people say well he doesn't spend any time in auto he's out there brokering deals left right and center he is a man on a mission okay let's talk back now the Quebec liberals jump in polls they are seeing jubber polls i'm going to try to very quickly back to the terabund by election because there's an interesting correlation here right now the liberals lost that seat federally or one that seat rather by one vote there's a lot of back and forth last election courts courts overturned the election result but terabund like a lot of

3:06Quebec is changing it's becoming more cosmopolitan and deaths less demographically aligned with the block and with the pq so i think this is going to be one of the most interesting of these bi-elections and it completely ties into what is about to happen here provincially in Quebec we are seeing the wind in shallow milleoves sales recent leje polls have put the pq in a statistic tie with the pq and you look at these areas like terabund which used to be block and pq strongholds that might start to shift now as we have a liberal party that is looking more serious that is looking more attractive so i think the chances of a pq majority are slipping we're seeing the pq start to panic chances of the pq winning are growing they're still not there yet but this has been a trend for the past three months and if it continues we might be talking about premier chauvin media in seven months the one wild card here remains the cacu there about to have a new leader soon it is likely to be just interested she is quite popular among the party she's again a little bit more center

4:08right a little bit less of a sobrentest so i think that may pull a few voters back to the cacu but their brand is so tarnished right now joanne that i think the battle remains between the pq and the plq and chauvin yow is bringing a pretty good fight today well if Pablo Rodriguez taught us anything you never know what can happen so we're gonna have to keep following all of this very closely because it it's there's so many changes all the time uh send you white it's so interesting as always to get your perspective thank you so much for taking the time and we will speak again next Sunday thank you very much so
