佛陀带领一千二百五十位大比丘弟子来到舍卫国给孤独园。当时城里有位长者家财万贯，拥有无量的金银珠宝。可是，他虽然很富有，但却非常悭贪吝惜。他不赡养自己的父母亲，也不愿意布施穷人，就连他的妻子、奴仆也常常跟着他吃不饱、穿不暖，对待亲戚邻居，更是一毛不拔！长者命终之后，因为没有子女继承遗产，他辛辛苦苦挣了数不清的钱财都被充公，归国家所有。
